Hello. I am new to the forum, so I hope this particular topic hasn't already been covered before. I did some looking and couldn't find anything.
I am looking to jump into an HTC smart phone (or a PDA phone of some kind), but the one feature I would most like to see addressed is whether the phone can also double as a digital recorder. I know there's a voice record microphone built directly into the phone itself, but I'm after something more along the lines of an external jack.
A bit of background:
I'm a writer and often find myself recording either a) in person interviews or b) telephone interviews. I am currently using a Sony MD to record both by way of a microphone that plugs in directly to the MD or a jack system that allows me to plug into a normal land-line phone. It usually works fine, but my MD is getting to be of age and is, as such, increasingly less reliable.
I don't want to record phone conversations that I'm having on my HTC itself (though that would also be beneficial), but rather as an option to simply plug into it (via a straight microphone or USB jack) and record.
Is this possible? That's the question. I've been doing a lot of research and haven't found anything conclusive and would appreciate some feedback to that end. And if not, why not? Between a smart phone's capacity to write word documents, take pictures and, hopefully, record (from phone, microphone, etc.) this would be the tool many journalists would undoubtedly want to have.

i'd asume that the input for wired headset mic also works with that recorder
if not then i'd guess it is bipassing the pda and goes directly into the gsm part

The question about the headset mics I have seen, though, is whether they'd pick up a telephone conversation. And then it's not a dedicated line-in, but part of a headset attachment, anyway. I just want a dedicated line in specifically for recording from an external source i.e. not any convo on the phone.

I don't really care that it's a mono jack, frankly; I am not trying to reproduce stuff as an audiophile. But which models can I plug a mike into directly to begin recording? I'm actually a little amazed that this issue has required so much digging; I would thought this would have been a natural, easy-to-understand feature included on every smart phone.
i remember in the past... i ve seen some SD card for reporters or so, with in and outs...
but my new tytn has only microSD :-(

and skype being developd as a pda program rather then a pdaphone program

I discovered yesterday the issue with the speaker and went through many forum but did not find any positive answer on how to get the sound directed to the good speaker.when using SIP.
I even did not understood if it is a problem of the touch cruise only or a general issue ...
Is the issue solvable - So I can still hope - or is there any hardware limitation
This issue means that using SIP with the Touch cruise is not possible except if we agree to have everyone in the room listening to the phone call ...

Search for a sip client agenet mobile or something. It's not exactly the name, but I can't dind it again. But this one is the only one that works at least on some of the smartphones with the earspeaker. And they want to add more supported devices in the future.
Generally it's a general problem, not a TC problem. The telcos just don't want a proper SIP integration in WM or they even deactivate it completely. It's a kind of squeeze to Microsoft. But MS won't disrespect them because they all like money.

Yeah, that's it. I've tried it right now as well but no luck. It's quite useless, as long as the ear speaker is not working. But it's not their blame. On the Trinity it's working allegedly.
Maybe we can them them a log. For some models they fix it.

Take care that a trick exist with some SIP softphone which reduces the level on the rear sound speaker, giving the impression that it comes from the normal sound speaker but is is not the case ...

Regarding our SIP softphone - eyeP Communicator for Windows Mobile – we have not yet made any certifications (nor tests) with the HTC Touch series. Until last year, previous HTC devices (HTC TyTN, 9100, etc) exposed a hardware bug which did not allow to handle the back and phone speakers correctly. But we hope this issue has been sorted out by HTC on new devices.
For information, we intend to make a new certification versus an HTC Touch Cruise before the end of the year. If your project has shorter timelines, then I suggest organizing a conf call to a date/time which works fine with you.

I am looking for an upgrade from the Universal. These two devices are looking about the closest (or the touch pro 2).
I use the universal without earphones or bluetooth, as a phone, is that possible with the 75x0? Or must you have an attachment?
(the universal had two dedicated speakers for mono 'phone' mode, and two others for stereo speakerphone).
you need attachment, you can't just use it as a phone (ie hold it to your ear) it gets real annoying for me.
To be honest, practically it can work as a phone even w/o any attachment. It has two stereo louder speakers and one microphone on its front panel. But the thing is that it does not have the speaker like in the regular phone - only louder speaking mode is available, therefore, everybody will hear you during your phone conversations. Or you should find out your "secret" place for talking with people.
BT or cord attachment can solve this problem and let you use this brick as a phone, but, believe me, you will forget about regular use...

Now I'm just trying to test this relation 7510 + cord headset replacing my Nokia E71 (just to test). Finally, I'm sure that I will return to Nokia soon - it's absolutely impossible to use 7510 as a regular working phone for everyday use.
I'm using the X7500 and now X7510 since 3 years as phone and Im happy with. OK, you need a BT headset or BT carkit - but no other phone in the world can offer the features a X75xx has.

Interesting that someone would love to use the x75x0 as a regular phone. The more recent WM phones (Touch HD2, Toshiba TG01) being hailed have screens almost as big as the x75x0. When I read their users' wish list for these modern phones, they seem to be describing something like the x75x0. Something tells me that a re-release of the x7510 with some tweaks could be a winner! Desired improvements: 1GHz processor, WVGA (800x480) resolution, skin cover for the main device (without hardware keyboard).

People think these screens are as big?
I have the universal, which is a 4" screen, and when I look at any phone in a shop at the moment, the size of the screen is much smaller.
I use my X7510 as a phone (and internet browser, agenda, tomtom and mp3 player)
The WM 6.5.3 interface is a huge improvement in the phone usefulness and that makes Windows mobile slowly getting to become a proper phone-software.
The contact images (the faces of your contacts) are of course still microscopic.
I live in one of the no cellphone while driving w/o a headset states, so I take my blueant z9i headset wherever I go anyway, so if youre the same then I'd say yes, it works perfectly and reliably as a phone, as well as an internet tablet, a messenger device, a audio-video player, an ebook reader, a GPS Navigator, an SNES emulator, (haven't tried the playstation emulator yet), as well as whatever else of the boatload of uses you can find for it.
Ok - I've got the Desire, and I'm liking it.
I've also got Spotify, and it's excellent.
But Spotify in the car would be amazing.
So, question is, would the above kit be a useful purchase?
This particular Parrot comes in 3 flavours, the bog standrd MKi9000, but there's another two which also have a small screen accompaniement.
Question is, which should I get?
Or should I get something else entirely?
I like the idea of FM transmitters, but pretty much across the board, they are meant to perform poorly. I also don't like the idea of being restricted by having to instal some of them in the cigarette lighter - I'd rather the stero component was hard wired if possible (and easy to fit myself as I'm on a budget).
So, any advice peeps?
I have a parrot SK4000 and it's terrible.
I've got a Parrot Mki9200 and it's great. It's a Parrot device so you have to expect the occasional oddity but I just get in the car and I have bluetooth handsfree and A2DP streaming from my Desire. I'm even contemplating changing my earlier Parrot 3400GPS in another car.
Haven't tried it with Spotify but I can't see why it wouldn't work. Works fine with Google Maps Navigation, although occasionally the A2DP streaming takes a second to kick in which means you miss the very first part of the voice instruction.
Edited to add that you can plug the Desire into the USB connector which both charges it and allows you full onscreen browsing of the media on your Desire. Select songs by album, artist, playlist, folder, etc.

Thing is, do you need the small screen that comes with the 9200, if you only use it with a Desire? I mean, what exactly would you use the screen for, assuming you've already got your Desire on a dashboard mount anyway?
I'm clueless about in car bluetooth connectivity and suchlike, so any advice is great. You can get the mki9000 quite cheap if you look around, but with the screens, you add a fair bit to the cost.
So - any other advice?
I had a MKi9100 Parrot which had to be returned as it had a fault. However, i was really disppointed with the quality of the music, as it uses its own inbuilt amp, not the car stereo amp. Quality suffers as a result.
With the MKI9200, I believe that there is a way to wire the kit, so the music plays through the car stereo, but you then have to have a separate speaker for phone calls, else you won't hear calls when the stereo is off. A good source of info can be found at the Parrot forums.
The benefit of the Parrot gear is that you can integrate it with your stearing wheel controls (if fitted), although you will need the additional control module.
Given my rather unreliable experience of Parrot gear, I'm looking to ditch my present Parrot CK3000 unit in favour of the Bury cc9060 kit. Not only does this kit have A2DP (music via bluetooth) and the ability I believe to route music via the stereo (please check to confirm), but most impressively it has multipoint - the ability to connect 2 bluetooth phones at the same time. A real bonus for those of us with 2 mobiles....

The Parrot instruction manual is wrong on this. If you have a decent car stereo, you can wire a line-out from the Parrot to the Line-In from the car stereo and use the car hi-fi amp for streaming music. You still connect the speaker bypass which kicks in if you get/make a voice call. I've confirmed this with Parrot tech support.
As for the screen, if you've got (or are getting) the Desire car dock and you only listen to music from the phone, I guess you don't need the screen. However I find that I use the SD card & USB connection to listen to music as well so the screen is pretty essential. The 9200 is only around £20 more than the 9100 so it was a no brainer for me.
However I did look at the Bury devices as well. I do expect the Bury ones are slightly more reliable (although the 9200 is better than expected) but I found them lacking in some features.

I've also got a 3400 (same thing but with GPS, not the most reliable of devices!) and the best way is to delete all contacts, re-pair the phone and then send a multi-contact VCF file to the Parrot. You can create a multi-contact VCF from MS Outlook if you have that.
I've managed to get multi-number contacts (so you can do voice dialling with "Call... Alex... Home"), contact pictures and all features working correctly with the Desire. It did take some fiddling though, especially compared to the 9200 which was pretty seemless.

Just got an MKi9200 and installed in my 2008 Civic. I am loving it so far!!
I have paired my Desire which I plan to use for calls and sat-nav using the bluetooth audio feature.
I also plugged in a 32Gb USB stick which I will be using for playing music.
All this works well so far, except for a few little niggles.... I am hoping someone can help
1. When the phone sync's with the Parrot I get a message "File format not supported" which appears, disappears and appears again during the sync. Its possibly contact related (either pictures or the contact themselves) - can anyone advise??
2. When the sat nav (Copilot) gives directions, the sound comes out of the Desire AND the cars speakers. This is fine but the phone sounds up first, then after a 1/2 second delay the same instruction comes through the cars speakers. Any ideas on how to get them to play at the same time or mute the phones instruction but still hear the car speakers?
Any help gratefully received!

I use the venturi mini on mine and it works flawlessly the only problem is it does plug into the lighter socket, I did end up buying a 3 way extension plug for the socket though off ebay so it is now mounted elsewhere and i still have 2 spare lighter sockets and a usb charging port on it as well as on the bluetooth car kit.
the kit was about £20 off of ebay of £50 in the shops, phonebook dl all ok even transmits it on the head unit if it has RDS on it.

I have the exact same model, had the exact same problems but cured it.
I wrote a post about my experiences http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668042 , but I think the upshot is actually to break all the "links" in your contacts.
My LS3200 works flawlessly now.
advice please
I'd like to get Bluetooth handsfree set up with my Desire in my Toyota Rav4 (2005). Am looking at the following:
1. Brodit active cradle (hardwired to car, avoiding cigarette charger)
2. Parrot BT kit
So, my questions are: which Parrot kit am I best getting (dont want to spend a fortune, but would be nice to stream music from Desire through stereo speakers), & can anyone recommend a company to do the installation professionally in London? (as much as I'd love to do it all myself, probably not a good idea to open up the dashboard etc?)
Its a no brainer to go wth the MKi series, thebosh, but it depends if you want clutter on your dash or keep it clean and minimalistic.
But following the parrot forums loosely, its seems that more and more people are having difficulties with the 9100 and 9200 than the 9000 due to the added screens and with displaying what they wantr and how they want it, especially with software updates, changes to phonebook layouts and intergrations with social feeds etc.
For me, it had to be the 9000 with just the remote, which I mounted on a spring clip and then to a face vent.
I also got a brodit active charger (the one with the hardwired charging lead) for sat nav purposes, so I saw no need for an extra bluetooth screen you have to mount somewhere.
I too am planning to cut the cigar charger plug off and hardwire it, just need to get around to it.
The sound quality from the desire to the parrot 9000/9100/9200 BT is exceptional, and the music bass/treble is well balanced.
As for installation, register on the parrot forums and ask there.
You'll be surprised how many installers are registered for troubleshooting and can give you some sort of price/advice on whos doing it in that area.
I put mine into my 206, and its no sweat.

There are alot of bugs when it comes to the screened versions of the Mki series, hence my recommendation of the 9000.
I have no such problems with any sort of delay in sat nav commands, music quality or phone sync from my desire.
Only niggle I get is blipping when im canning the music at full chat from my desire on fuller vocal songs,
but using the Mix-zing app, and turning up the buffer size does help.

This is exactly the kind of solution I am looking for! I just got my MKI9000 installed and unfortunately the installer routed all 4 speaker output through the cutoff and not through the line-in.
I have a Skoda (part of the VAG family) and I am now trying to cross information so I can come back to the installer and get him to fix the installation (he will learn a thing or two from the infinite internet wisdom )
Any more information you can share on this option?

This topic is pasted all over the net and it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, however I think it should be brought to a better light.
The idea is simple: Enable your Android Phone or Tablet to become a bluetooth reciever(to replace a headset or bluetooth speakers) and broadcast audio to the device and broadcast microphone from the device.
This could be used in several different applications:
1. Using an Android Tablet as a Car Stereo Interface
(Connect Phone to Tablet Via Bluetooth and use it as a hands free speakerphone, or aux out to your stereo)
2. Multiple Android Phones
(Have a business and personal phone? Answer all your calls from one.)
3. Phone or Tablet as Bluetooth Speaker/Mic
(Skype, PS3, Xbox 360, TV, Google Voice)
I would use several of these options on a daily basis, and would most definitely pay good money for an app like this.
So my questions are:
1. Is this possible?
2. If it is, how hard would it be?
3. If it isn't that hard, why hasn't someone done it yet!?

Just wanted to bump this because we need to put our heads together here and get this done. I need this capability for number 1 on your list of potential uses. I also would pay good money for an app that enabled this. Phones and tablet are rooted and ready to modify whatever is needed. Ii've bumped a couple other threads today as well.

I have been looking for this for a while. I use an old LG Eve in my car and my Captivate's Wifi connection for GPS but I would love to have it work for calls and music too.

just wanted to leave an incentive kind of post to say that I've also been looking for exactly the same thing.
My hunting on Google play just stopped after finding this post on XDA.
It's a kind of confirmation that there isn't a solution yet.
Since our rooted androids are more than capable of acting as a Bluetooth receiver, whether they may be based on new or older hardware, this seams like a very logical step in their lifecycle instead of getting forgotten in a drawer full of old and unused electronic waste.
Some doubts:
is a2dp required for this?
Is a2dp hardware related or simply a software feature?
Personally, I could live with a simple one way communication from a phone with mobile network (sender ) to the receiver. The used mic could still be the one on the sender side.
Wouldn't even need to have the receiver in a visible place as I would just connect a stereo cable from its headset output to an aux input on a hifi or a car stereo to hear music or acting as a hands-free system.
Hope this gets some real attention.

I can't beleive there is STILL no progress on this. Maybe I'll try asking a dev that has made similar apps the feasibility of this. There are so many practical uses for this that I cannot beleive no one has capitalized on it.
This would be a killer app if done right. Who here doesn't have an old phone laying around gathering dust? This could start off small; simply enabling the phone/tablet to be essentially a Bluetooth speaker, but then gain features and an interface using A2DP, which would evolve it into a killer way to make any car (with at least a tape deck) able to have full Bluetooth integration and control. I really hope someone can do this!

May be this is not the right way to do.
I know this is a crazy old subject but others have commented so I don't feel so bad.
I want to make my own android system for my car. I have everything I need for it (hardware/software-wise) except for this one thing.
A few years back there used to be an app called Tablet Talk, it's not exactly what we want but I'm still willing to settle for something like that. The way it works is phone->tablet->handsfree Bluetooth speaker. You could make and receive calls (including seeing the contact names/phone numbers on the tablet) from the tablet itself, then the audio/microphone goes to the handsfree device. Another added feature was when a call is happening the app stops all audio coming from the tablet until the call is done.
Like I said before, it's not perfect but at this point, I don't ever see it happening any other way. I found the app a few days ago, it doesn't exist on the app store anymore, unfortunately, I could get it to run. It just kept crashing.
If anyone knows of something then please let us know.
Years later, found just this thread: I want to do similar thing: Use a private phone (for my sake rooted with custom fw) as a hands-free bt device with an unrooted business phone (non-rooted and secure managed with company tool). I also don't want call forwarding or similar. Just do and answer calls, use phone book and call list via bluetooth like my car radio do for years.
Is there still no solution?
Is this even possible with One Plus 7?
I see a lot of YouTube videos that claim it is possible on other devices. It involves use of an app called BT Mono (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bedoig.BTmono) and downloading the Open Camera app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.sourceforge.opencamera). Steps involved are :
1. Using the BTmono app select the on switch and adjust required volume
2. In open camera, select audio input as "external" and record
Clearly, it works in the videos. It doesn't on One Plus 7 probably because
1. BTmono is not updated to Android 10. I couldn't find any alternative to that.
2. I suspect One Plus doesn't support BT recording. I mailed them but no reply despite reminders.
In a separate mail, support said that you can do this by wired headphones or headsets but that doesn't suit me. I want to record videos of classroom as a teacher explaining things on the white board and be able to move around. This rules out other solutions like wired headphones /headsets/ wired lavalier mics. UHF wireless solutions are too expensive
Another reason I want to use BT is that I have an old sound cancelling Bose BT ear phone that is ideal since it minimise noise.
I have spent many many hours reading up, experimenting with different BT pieces /apps
I would love to have a working solution for this ASAP (it involves students learning and I am not charging them for all my efforts because of the Covid 19 situation)
