well, the documentation that comes with your pda says so, with a lot of pictures for those who cannot read.

Does anybody knows if microsoft is working on this issue or simply they want that we pay for Outlook?
I can't belive that they don't let us use the built-in calendar/contact!
Any third-part software?
It is meaningless!

Allmost all PDAs that are being sold on the planet comes with version of Microsoft Outlook so no need to buy it!
And Yes it is very sad that you can't sync with Vista's internal programs! They are wey easier to use!

Mine is Outlook 2002!
I don't think it will run on Vista.. But even if it runs.. I can't understand why i have to install that USELESS (and bloatware..) software!
I would use Vista becuse, as you said, it's much more easy!
So why have i instal Outlook (old version) if there is a "mini" (???) outlook built-in?

i guess they consider people who buy this kind of device would actually not care much for price or for outlook since outlook is standard for evey office out there.. have you ever seen a business rely on whatever comes with windows and not ms office? anyway i agree with all of you, there should be some way or 3rd party app that syncs regular windows stuff..
ms is never money satisfied!

LOL
So, why they make a camera phone? Businessman can buy 10 megapixel camera.
Why they make pocket pc? Businessman can buy UMTC!
So, sorry, but i can not agree on this theory.
We have a good PIM on Vista. What I ask is to USE IT.
So, is there anyone who knows something about this issue?
Any from the betatesters?

The problem is that Vista was released prior to WM6

Yes i know.. but we can read:
Microsoft® Outlook® 2003 and Microsoft® Outlook® 2007 messaging and collaboration clients are required for synchronization of e-mail, contacts, tasks and notes to a Personal Computer.

So we can understand that:
-Microsoft don't care about calendar.. LOL
-"Allmost all PDAs that are being sold on the planet comes with version of Microsoft Outlook" but it is too old, it wold not run on Vista (Microsoft says it, not me).
So, i repeat: anyone knows if Microsoft is working on sync between PDA and Vista PIM?
Is there a mail, a forum, where i could ask this simply question to Microsoft?
Thank you.

Any substitute for Windows Outlook?

Hi,
I want to substitute MS Outlook (desktop version on my PC with Windows XP) with other application due to many annoying bugs in Outlook. It should have calendar, tasks, contacts, ability to import and export VCS (vCalendar) files and work with Outlook databases of course (I still want to synchronize with PDA).
Could your recommend me some programs? I've tried Agendus for Windows Outlook, but it's some sort of Outlook plug-in so it doesn't resolve Outlook problems.
Thanks in advance,
Mozilla Thunderbird..?

What version of Outlook are you using? It's an corporate standard app that's pretty much bug free...

2007, but bugs for example in VCS import exist. I send e-mail to MS support in Jun or July (don't remember exactly) and there reproduced it. I've written them last week and got answer that bug will be fixed in Service Pack (maybe second ).
By the way - I found 2 bugs after 2 weeks of using Outlook 2007...
Ah, so mainly the issue is lesser used functions?
Sorry, but I don't actually think there ARE any alternatives for contact synching in Windows. Outlook is pretty much it. Still, in general usage I certainly don't experience any problems with it.

Thanks for your input, but IMHO Outlook has nothing to do with synchronization - it's ActiveSync work I think.
There are alternative PIMs for XP and I'm testing some of them now, but I'm asking hoping that somebody with more experience with such a software could give me a clue.
I'm glad to hear that you don't have any problems with Outlook, but I have some (and for me not with "lesser used functions"). I don't have time to write application or script converting VCS files I use (about 20-30 files a day) to non-standard format accepted by Outlook, so I want to try another software.
In fact my idea is not to remove Outlook from my PC completely, but use other program writing and reading Outlook's databases so synchronization will be no problem.

Contact manager a la Outlook

Everywhere I see I keep finding references to Outlook when I want to edit contacts through my computer instead of through my PPC (it's a seriously painful job at times... ><).
I have no interest in buying the entire damned Outlook/Office suite for this little thing, and OpenOffice covers everything I need otherwise. Does this exist?
Outlook is an awesome app period. I got '07 version (only one on shelves) for about $70. Not to mention it will also be your main point for calender, tasks, notes, contacts, and if you want mail (kind of pointless if you have the unlimited data plan) Or just find a contact manager app for your PPC that you like, you don't have to purchase the entire office suite.
I'm still not keen on getting Outlook. Costly, unnecessary since I have everything I need in other programs or services. All I need is a way to manage contacts like I can do in Outlook (through Activesync), and that's what I'm looking for, but can't find.
Does it exist?
may try jeyo mobile companion.
its a desktop tool to work with your PPC for SMS and contacts.
Im using Mozilla Thunderbird and Birdiesync, if you install the Lightning-Addon for Thunderbird you can even sync your Calendar.

Synch WM6 with Windows Calendar & Address?

Hi,
I own an HTC Touch, with WM6. Vista includes apps such as Windows Calendar and Windows Address Book.
I was wondering if it was possible to sync automatically (using Mobile Device Center e.g) your windows calendar & address book with the ones used by WM6.
I can't imagine them being so stupid in Redmond not to make it compatible...
I don't want to work with Outlook because for starters, i don't have outlook, and i'm using windows mail, which is as basic as i need.
Anybody a suggestion?
Greetz
not that i know off but if you use hotmail and or gmail you can sync directly to those services
How do you mean? I have a Gmail account...

There are many more stupid decisions being taken in Redmond.. So yes I can imagine them being so stupid not to offer a syning method for 2 of their own products.
The answer is simple - which enterprise clients are going to use those apps? none seems to be the answer, so they are invisible as far as the development team are concerned.

Migrating from WM6 to Symbian...

I'm thinking of trying symbian platform.. Nokia E61i to be specific. Can anyone suggest any painfree way to transfer all my PIM data to the Nokia?
Thanks..

transfer from what?
btw my bet would be maybe through outlook but i'm not sure if symbian supports that
Nokia!?!??
Loll.. well some newer Nokia models have very good .. almost pda like features. Plus they are excellent in multimedia, fast firmware, and nokia e61i is a blackberry-ish device.But the biggest hurdle is all my contacts, appointments, tasks, etc. etc... meaning, how to transfer them from my jamin to a symbian device?
I had a e61 before my i780 - if you use Outlook, forget it - it will drive you nuts - symbian doesn't synch things like categories and is much poorer for PIM.
Yes it will synch with outlook but in a crippled manner.
Use Outlook 2003
Simply sync with Outlook 2003 and then use the Nokia PC Suit to sync again with your symbian. Alternatively you can use Yahoo GO to sync online. Use Yahoo GO on your symbian too...
I Love Symbian Phones....
My Sony Ericsson P990 sync'd with Outlook way quicker and more reliably than any WM device I have used. Sony Ericsson's equivalent to activesync is also much better than Activesync in my opinion because you can turn it off when not using it.

My experience as well. I have never gotten even one duplicate entry using SE's PC Suite. And you can check the report to see exactly what was synced. The only thing missing is the ability to sync notes with jotted drawings.
Thanks a lot for all the help guys.. so synching with outlook would take care of contacts, tasks and appointments?? What about smses.. ? I don't think outlook would do that, would it?

I don't think there's an option for synching SMS; wish there was, I've got a few thousand on my Dual.
I was just searching for something to transfer SMS from WM to Nokia and I found this:
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/PC-and-Mac-Software/Migrating-from-Windows-Mobile-to-Nokia/td-p/747754
For exporting the messages to csv, I used the freeware PIM Backup (http://www.dotfred.net/). This software archives your messages (and lots of other stuff) to a PIB-file on the mobile device. I copied the file to my PC, renamed to .zip and unpacked the contained files. One of them is called msgs_*.csm - this is a csv-file that holds all the messages of the WinMo device. Problem is: the format is totally different from what PC suite expects. Here is a litte Perl-script that does the conversion:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use Encode qw/encode decode/;
@na=(0,"Inbox","Outbox","SentItems","DeletedItems","Drafts");
read STDIN, $i, 2;
while (read(STDIN, $i, 4096)) {$s.=decode("UCS-2LE", $i);}
@a=split(/(?<=\")\r\n/,$s);
@idx=();$i=0;
for(split(/;/,shift(@a))) { $idx{$_}=$i++;}
for (@a) {
$_ or next;
@b=split /(?<!\\);/;
$b[$idx{"Account"}] ne '"SMS"' and next;
($f=$b[$idx{"Folder"}])=~s/^\"\\\\%MDF(\d)\"$/$1/;
($sa=$b[$idx{"Sender Address"}])=~s/^.*?<?([\+0-9]+)>?.*$/"$1"/;
$rc='"'.(split(/\\;/,$b[$idx{"Recipients"}]))[2].'"';
@t=split(/,/,$b[$idx{"Modify Time"}]);
($su=encode("UTF-8", $b[$idx{"Subject"}]))=~s/\r?\n/ /g;
$s="sms;".(($f==1||$f==4)?"deliver":"submit").";".(($f==1||$f==4)?"$sa;\"\"":"\"\";$rc").
";\"\";\"$t[0].$t[1].$t[2] $t[3]:$t[4]\";\"\";$su\r\n";
if (!fileno("FD$f")) {open "FD$f",">",$na[$f].".csv";}
syswrite "FD$f", $s, length($s);
I havent tried it as i dont know how to use pearl script....
Can any one here explain in detail about how to use it.....
It might be helpful to many.......

Any chance of syncing?

Is there a way to sync my WP7 phone like the old WindowsMobile phones?
this phone is not for online purpose (too expensive!!!) so I need to sync it via cable.

Seriously i don't know what this guy is talking about.
SO I have Outlook 2003 with all my contacts and appointments in it. This was easy to sync with my old MDA.
Now with the new WP7 this function is nowhere to find. All what opens is Zune an this does not sync anything from outlook in any way.
It just doesn't sync with Outlook in a normal way.
Zune doesn't do it (still!). Apparently this simpe task was to difficult to implement it on WP7, or rather MS wanted to force you to use cloud.
The only choice you have to Sync PC/Outlook and WP7 phone
is to get Hotmail plugin in the Office,
this way you can sync Calendar and Contacts, via data plan/wifi.

For me, the inability to sync directly with a PC is the one and only deal breaker. My calendar, contacts, etc. are all housed in Outlook at work and my company blocks all access to third-party email systems, making syncing the "Windows Phone" way completely impossible.
I tried extracting the calendar and contacts into data files, importing them into Gmail, and then syncing with the Quantum that I picked up on Ebay, and it was an epic fail! Many contacts were missing their contact names and recurring appointments were converted into individual appointments, which would make rescheduling those appointments a *HUGE* P.I.T.A.!!! They never should have removed that ability to sync with a PC completely.
In less than 2 days, I couldn't wait to switch back to using my Rhodium full time. Sure, I miss the coolness factor of the new bells and whistles in Windows Phone, but I am confident that I can trust that my data is always up to date and complete in my Windows Mobile phone.

that's pretty funny because my company "blocks anything but Blackberry" but all I had to do is put in my credentials for the exchange account and autodiscovery grabbed everything and sync'd it to the phone. Did you even try that? Granted your company needs to be in the modern era and not stuck onsomething like Exchange 2003.

My company will not disclose the Exchange server (yes, we're on 2003) credentials to anyone, because they do not want anyone accessing the server with an unauthorized personal device. If they want you to have access to the servers for business purposes, they will only allow it via a company-provided Blackberry or laptop computer. The only thing I am able to do is sync my calendar, contacts, task list, and notes with my Rhodium via ActiveSync. I do not send/receive company email via my Rhodium.

go android. The conversion from winmo (which I loved) to win phone 7 forced me to android. Which I love now, and you can sync anything (Google or exchange, or whatever else). MS Fd up.

Funny that all the sync features you listed here can as well be synced on WP in the exact same way. The OP was asking for a way to sync his desktop Outlook with his device without using any internet services.

Yes, exactly! It still baffles me as to why MS would remove that option entirely. They rewrote the mobile OS completely to compete with Android and iPhone, but yet they limit you to syncing your data the same way that the competitors do? Why not go the extra step and allow your customers to choose their sync method, so as to not completely alienate your current users?
As it is, my home PC is Vista, while my work PC is XP, so syncing with 2 PCs is impossible. ActiveSync and Device Center conflict with each other so badly, that I can't even sync my data at work, sync it at home, and then sync my home Outlook with the web services, so that I can then sync with a WP7 device. Hell, I'd carry my Rhodium around with me (without the SIM card), just for syncing purposes, if I could do that!
I kind of understand what they were going for, but in doing so they have unwittingly made sure that I have no choice but to continue using my Rhodium... Happily! BTW, did I read correctly that Apollo is rumored to be bringing back PC syncing??? [Psst... Microsoft, if you give consumers more than what the competitors are, you just may gain some additional market share.... Just sayin'. ]

I've read that somewhere too. But it wasn't really specific. Could mean you can only sync media and probably documents like you used to back in the days of Windows Mobile. But I agree that adding cable sync for Outlook for those who can't use cloud services or Exchange or simply don't want to would set Windows Phone a little more apart from its competitors.
