Porting authorisation codes, keeping the same number - General Topics

I'm seeking information in anticipation of my upgrade time in September. I'm on a £20/month contract with O2 and because of this they always want to rape my pockets when I want to upgrade (example: when I got my XDA2i it was £99 on a new £20/month contract but they wanted me to pay £250 for it as an upgrade on a £20/month contract).
This means that to get the phone I want I have to start a new contract. This means that I have to get a new number, which is a pain in the posterior. Does anyone know if I can start a new contract with them, ask for the porting authorisation code for the number of my current contract, then tell them to switch it over? They have told me that I can't keep the same number (WHY? All this does is encourage me to go to another provider because with them I COULD keep my O2 number) but do you know if my just giving them a PAC issues by them would work?
Basically, can anyone think of a way I can get the phone I want, for the price I want (so probably has to be on a new contract), and keep my number?

So you basically want to stay with O2 using the same number, right? I thought you can always start a new contract using the same number.
If I were you I would just tell them that you might as well move to a different network. They'll do anything to keep you (I've just got my PAC from them today, moving to 3 some time this week).
Stupid policies.
PS: I wonder if you can pretend to be moving from a different network using the same number?

I was told by them a couple of years ago that you can't keep the same number if you're staying with them. Which seems absurd if you CAN keep it if you're going to a different provider, as it would only encourage people to change to someone else.

That's what I was thinking. I don't know about PACs though, whether they'd know from the PAC if it was issued by themselves.

New Contract and keeping same phone number

I am looking to buy a touch diamond 2 in the next 3 weeks and have a general question regarding contacts and keeping my current phone number.
In order to get the TD2 for an affordable price I need to take out a new contract with the same provider (t-mobile) am currently with. An upgrade is out of the question as the phone would cost more than the new contract. I would like to keep the same number, so is it possible to transfer my current number to a pay as you go sim then transfer the number from the pay as you go sim to the new contract?
If so can someone give me an idea on the timescales involved and timings to avoid as little phone downtime as possible. Anyone done this? or any advice regarding the procedure is most welcome.

I think I lost my Fuze, should I get another one from ATT insurance...

Hi, wondering if anybody can help me out with ATT policy. I was visiting my grandparents in Toronto when I lost my phone the day before I had to fly home to Los Angeles. Unfortunately I did not have time to look for it since I was busy packing for the trip home. Anyways when I got back I called ATT to tell them my phone was lost and they said they will sendme another phone when I pay my deductable.
Anyways I have two questions
1. Would it be possible to wait until the Touch Pro 2 comes out next month and ask for that as a replacement + cash if needed?
2. What happens if my family manages to find it and mail it back to me? Will ATT know that I found it and force me to return the replacement? Would they even care after i pay the deductable?
they'll probably just send you a refurb fuze and likely refuse the upgrade, especially when the fortress is a new release. i can't see them upgrading you even with cash.
att won't know you found your phone. i had lost a phone and reported it and found it 1 month later and went on to use it fine.
You guyz are lucky, wonder if these giant beast are so nice. :O

Seriously? Do you even know what you're talking about? :| If you report a phone stolen and find it and use it, it's no big deal UNLESS you get a new one via insurance. Then it's called fraud. You have to pay the deductible for your phone if you want it via insurance and they'll send a brand new in box one to you. No, you cannot wait till the TP2 comes out and exchange it for that. That will only happen if you've warranty exchange your fuze a lot and you complain to AT&T a lot. Quite a few people have done this. If you really didn't know, AT&T can track you via IMEI. They know which account is linked to which IMEI. They will know when you're using a blacklisted phone or when suddenly a "stolen" phone is being used on the same sim card. Don't take that risk
1) TP2 isn't comming to AT&T anytime soon, and they will never give you a better phone plus cash
2) I believe they put a status code of a bad or lost ESN id on the databases, so the phone can't be used again on the AT&T network. It may even come up as a stolen status.
That won't stop you from being able to use the phone as a PDA

#2 is not true, but #1 probably is.
I believe Cassetti is right about #2 When you call it stolen, they block the esn id so the thief can't use your phone.

the fact is : its not true. Proven fact.
thx for the info guys, i called up att and told them what happened, paid the deductable and picked up a new fuze. I ask them what happened if i manage to find it and they said most likely they will let me keep it as a back up but i would need to call them to reactivate it or something like that.
guess i;ll just skip the touch pro 2 and wait for a WM7 device or that rumored microsoft "pink" zune phone lol...
It is not blacklisted. If you find it you can use it or sell it. You don't have to "reactivate" or anything, just put a SIM card in and off you go.

[Q] Canceling my contract needs advice

Hi all need your advice.
I've been in contact with Orange for a couple of weeks now and finaly they are alowing me to cancel my contract with them 14 months remaining.
Reason being they are unable to provide me with the service im paying for.
So I'm happy that they are going to cancel my remaining contract but they are telling me that I can not keep my number.
I've had this number for over 10years and been on different providers in that time, Are they within there rights to with hold it from me and if they aren't what do I need to do to keep it
As they are saying I cant have my PUK number to take it with me.
I was under the impression it was my number
Also they want the phone back now this was free with the contract that I took out with carphone warehouse do I have to give it back? If I do then I do its not really a problem but it would of been nice to keep it.
Its just my number I want to keep really.
Most "free" phones are only free if you stay with the company for the duration of the contract. I think a small amount is added to each bill to pay for it. As for not allowing you to keep your number I don't think that should be legal. Try going with a different company and you should get the option to switch and keep the same number, let the companies bicker it out.

If the number is already on another line and there is early termination in the works then you wont be getting it back. A second carrier cannot claim a number in an active contract. You're kinda screwed sadly.

Actually - it is against the law for them NOT to transfer your number. Since they already confirmed you could cancel your contract early, you're all set. If that was not the case, then you would have to pay an early termination fee (or whatever your contractual agreement is). Just make sure you get your current number "ported" to the new carrier before your contract officially ends.
This is directly from about.com:
"Question: Number Portability: Can I Transfer My Cell Phone Number?
Answer: Yes. In the United States, wireless local number portability (WLNP) is a legally mandated service that allows the transfer of a cell phone number from one carrier to another.
History
Number portability for landline phone numbers existed before it did for wireless numbers. In July 2002, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set a Nov. 2003 deadline for WLNP to take effect. Verizon Wireless resisted.
The FCC activated WLNP in Nov. 2003 in the top 100 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), which are the major cities in the U.S. In May 2004, the FCC made the service live in the rest of the U.S.
The FCC also made it so a landline number can be transferred to a cell phone carrier.
Overcoming Hurdles
Wireless local number portability has come a long way in the U.S. Transferring your cell phone number from one carrier to another used to be more complicated than it is today.
The switch also used to take longer than it does now. While the process of transferring (or porting) a number from one carrier to another initially took weeks, the FCC eventually mandated that the transfer take place within four business days.
Some cell phone carriers (such as Verizon Wireless) used this four-day window to attempt to convince customers not to switch. In response, the FCC in May 2009 changed the number portability requirement to one business day.
How to Initiate a Transfer
As of late 2009, the process has become very fast and painless. When you activate new service with a cell phone carrier, they’ll often ask if you’d like to transfer your existing number from another carrier. Transferring your phone number is free.
If they don’t ask and you do want your previous number ported over, make sure to let your new carrier know before you’re assigned a number there. If you request a phone number transfer, they’re required by law to grant it.
It’s very important not to cancel your current cell phone service until you have successfully transferred the old number to your new carrier. If you cancel at your previous carrier before establishing new service elsewhere, the number you’re trying to save will be lost.
To achieve a valid WLNP transfer, the cell phone carrier you’re switching to must offer local service in the same area as your existing phone number. Some carriers have online tools to immediately check your transfer eligibility (such as this AT&T tool).
Before You Transfer, Check Your Contract
While your previous cell phone carrier isn’t legally allowed to refuse a valid transfer request, you may still be bound to a service contract there.
If that’s the case, you’ll either have to wait until your contract expires or pay an early termination fee. If you’re with a prepaid wireless carrier without a contract or if you’re no longer under contract, you’re in the clear to initiate a transfer. "
is this orange uk? i've just posted something myself asking about getting out of a contract with them as the service is not what i pay for (poor signal, slow and non-existent 3g).
Thanks for the replies there some good info there just not sure how much of it is the same here in the UK but it give me somewhere to start.
Guess ill be going in to a phone shop tomorrow and see what they say
And yes I'm on Orange UK
If any one knows any thing else of use please let me know like I said before I'm not bothered about the phone I kinda figured they would want it back.
As for the number it was originaly issued by vodafone
talk to another carrier about it, sure they can help

No they can't.
In the UK, a network cannot transfer a number across without a PAC - Port Authorisation Code.
If the network that currently carries the number refuses to issue the code, there's precisely nothing that any other network can do.
@theOP: if memory serves, the rules about number porting say that a network cannot refuse to issue a PAC if the appropriate fees have been paid but since they are cancelling your contract at a loss to themselves, I think that gives them the right to refuse to issue one.
You could try contacting Ofcom but I'd be surprised if you heard anything back.
Just a quick up date I called Orange retentions yesterday and said I need my PUK number because I'm retuning my phone to them now that I've received the packet to return it.
The guy said yep thats fine ill sort it out now for you I said to him whats the easiest thing to do go but a Orange pay as you go for you to transfer the number to?
He said if I want to do that he will send me a sim in the post and once I rececive it call this number and we can do that for you over the phone
And then put my phone in the post.
So sorted I'm happy I get to keep my number
Ive took 3 years contract with telus, i hope i wont regret it.

[Q] HTC Arrive on Verizon?

Ok - I tried Sprint, and the coverage is just too bad for me to tolerate... But I really want the Arrive. I do not want a phone without a keyboard, so the Trophy won't do it for me.
I'm going to end up going back to Verizon, but I want to know if I buy an Arrive without a plan, can it be made to work with Verizon, and what consequences there would be? Someone suggested on another thread that if I wanted to get my hands dirty, I could change the ESN. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, but I need someone to show me what I need to do. Also, as far as consequences, would an Arrive on Verizon get updates? If no, would I be able to get updates from someone on here doing something similar?
Thanks for any suggestions.

AFAIK, changing the ESN is the only problem. I think you gotta have someone at Sprint/Verizon do it for you though. So hopefully that person owes you a favor
I also need to know if this would prevent me from unlocking the phone using the official dev channels. Thanks.

Grrr... I don't know anyone at either place. Any way around that? I was hoping it would be as simple as unlock it, find the ESN, and change the ESN to match that of my Verizon Touch Pro 2. Not so simple?
While I can't help with the Sprint/Verizon transfer stuff, I can tell you that, no matter who your provider is, you will always be able to officially dev-unlock your phone. Also, you will get WP7 updates, but they will likely appear only when Sprint authorizes them even if you're on Verizon.
Thanks... Since I don't have a lot of money rolling around, I really can't afford to have a phone sitting here that I can't talk on, so I'm really interested in whether I'll be able to get both talk and data working on Verizon with the phone. Someone from Microsoft on the Windows Phone team suggested buying a phone from Zones, the official site for planless WP7 phones, saying that the people at Zones are pretty good about getting the unlock codes for the phones. Would this make a difference in getting it onto Verizon, or am I likely to still have a problem getting my phone onto their network?
I've done this before and in 2008 it was much easier than it was now (posting how to get the tp from sprint on vzw at ppcgeeks)
that said, its not as easy for a variety of reasons. Personally I haven't tried to hit up pst to see if it even works
Verizon did block the hole that was previously used in 2009, so the only way to do it is through esn hacking. And on many places, that can't be discussed.
With windows phone 7 I am unsure if the process is still the same or if sprint still used msl to lock pst on their windows phone devices. Personally I would sell the arrive, wait a few weeks, and then go to the htc mozart on vzw's network. I know it's just me, but I haven't really begun to look at a cdma htc arrive to see if an esn change/hack is even possible on this platform.
I know vzw's stance on adding esn - they won't do it no matter who you are. You can try to send the device to them, but that has a very low rate of acceptance. The vzw handset alliance is a joke imho, which leaves users frustrated and with very little options.
Fooling around with the htc arrive I have to say its quite different but not a bad different. It's a shame you may have to sell it because of verizon being verizon
I know some of the regional carriers will flash/alter the ESN for you, but Verizon is pretty staunchly against it. Good luck getting it to work.

Flashing HTC Arrive
This is what i did to flash HTC Arrive using another CDMA operator (in this case, Smart Telecom Indonesia):
1. get the MSL/SPC of the phone. you can ask Sprint, or buy it from an unlock service provider (i bought it from nick flash cricket dot net)
2. put the phone in diag mode, using ##MFG#. i use winXP 32bit, and use this driver "HTC BMP USB Driver.zip"
3. connect to QPST. you can change the MSL, network code, IMSI, MDN, PRL, and auth HDR setting (evdo parameters)
4. connect to CDMA workshop to enter the AKEY
5. reboot.
now, my HTC arrive is with Smart Telecom. but alas, i can not unlock it to sideload apps

You know how rumors, Windows Phone 7 and Verizon are..... a bunch of bull****... I'll believe it when I see an offical press statement. That phone is just another one of the "Arrive" phones that passed FCC, no other info, it could be going to all the small CDMA carriers for all we know.
To the OP, you said you can't afford to have a phone sitting around and not working. How do you feel about spending $500-600 on a phone off contract ? That would be about what they would want for one.
I'd be interested in getting this working and trash the ESN on my TP2 (with a cracked display) if this was possable (and getting everything working, internet, SMS, etc with no issues) but, I'm not willing to dump $500+ on a phone that I might have problems getting working...If I could get it for $150-200, I'd be all over it though..
Edit: Checked on ebay...brand new, no contract, there is a buyit now for $360, so cheaper than I thought
Latest word on VZW is May 5th...(Next Thursday), I'd wait for that point before even attempting this.

Yeah, I saw the rumor of 7 Pro coming to Verizon (posted a link to it on another thread yesterday), and I have just about as much faith as you do. I'm unemployed, so no, I really don't want to spend $500 on a phone, but if I had to, I could, but only if it is going to actually work. And yes, I've already been looking on ebay. For the moment, I'm waiting on my refund from Sprint for the two Arrives that my wife and I had, and then I'll decide if I'm going to try it, or if it looks like VZW might actually DO something.
I'm growing more disgruntled with Verizon with every passing day, but unfortunately, they may as well be considered a monopoly where I live. I switched to Sprint for the Arrive, but had to switch back. I can look out my window, across the parking lot, and often see my pastor standing outside the church so he can talk on his ATT phone, and I'm just not willing to do that. So I guess I'm stuck with waiting until VZW gets over its grudge against MS for the Kin debacle. It's just ridiculous.

i don't know about verizon's policy. if they won't put a non verizon esn in their system, then HTC arrive on Verizon will never gonna happen, unless you can change the esn (i heard it's illegal in there).
AFAIK, in Indonesia, cdma operators will be happy to insert as many as possible other operator devices, to increase their ARPU. Competition is very tight in here, so flexibility and new technology adoption are very important. We are expecting evdo rev. B available to public in June

Yep and with the Microsoft eployee poster, it's been coming from mid Jan...We are talking almost 5 months of waiting for a phone to be released. You can show me 10,000 pictures of some phone that could of been photoshopped with a VZW logo (I do think its real tho) but, till we have a press release, it does not matter.

I'll tell you what, If we don't have at least a press statement by May 15th, I'll work with you to figure this one out. I'll call and pester tech support to get someone who will activate one (and share it with ya, if possble).
If that won't work, I'll figure out the...ugh...ESN cloning thing and use it from my TP2. I'm serious, you can PM me here or on PPCgeeks under the same user name.
I want this quest to end, if this is what I have to do, I am willing to do it... I'm tired of waiting for VZW to get off their ass and get us paying customers what we want.
I'm so pissed about it, I am seriously looking into going to AT&T and they are ok in my area but, not great. I can always go back within 15 days if I had to

Yeah... We know that at least the poster is official, so the Trophy WILL come to VZW. The question is how long they're going to jerk their paying customers around before it does.
As far as getting an Arrive to work on VZW, it would be so much easier if the new 7 Pro rumor is true AND happens sometime before Jesus comes back. But if you get an Arrive working on VZW, I will definitely be with you. I'm unemployed, so I can't afford to buy a phone if it's going to end up bricked because I did something wrong, and as far as programming, I'm just your basic .NET/SQL programmer without much experience, because at the manufacturing plant I worked at, I was the only IT guy, so I had to do it all, therefore didn't have time to specialize in anything (which is why I'm having so much trouble finding a job). And as far as whether it's legal or not to clone an ESN? Frankly, I don't care. It'd be my phone, so I really don't care what they say I can and cannot do with it.
I really want a phone, though, because I'm planning for this to make me some money, selling in marketplace. I've already paid for my developer account, and had my Sprint phone unlocked the official way, but had to send it back, since I went back to VZW. But that means my dev account is sitting there not making me any money, while the expiration date creeps closer. Also, I signed up for the MS App Garage event in Atlanta next month, so it would be great to have a phone by then. Hopefully we'll know something OFFICIAL soon. I'm so ticked at VZW.....

but again highly illegal considering vzw won't add ESNs of any kind. Heck even if you say that you got your device from HTC themselves, the ESN won't be added

[Q]Help with Porting Number and name change

I have a fun question. Me and my wife have decided that $160 a month and mediocre data speeds aren't worth it anymore, so we're thinking about making the jump to AT&T which seems to have pretty good coverage and speed here in Tampa Bay. I'm out of contract, she still has a year left, but we'll be breaking hers since it'll cost us like a month of service, which we'll get right back. Her parents are on an AT&T family plan and can add us on for like $20 bucks or something insignificant like that. Even with an upgrade in the data limits, it'll still save us like $100 a month.
Now that i've wasted your time with background, here's my question. I want to port my number, but my Sprint acct is in my name and they told me the name has to match the AT&T account (under her dad's name) in order for it to go thru. And in order for me to change the Sprint acct, he would essentially have to have a COFR done (which requires a credit check, which I'm not even going to ask him to do).
Does anyone have a creative idea on how to get my number over to AT&T? Perhaps porting it to some MVNO like Ting and then getting the account changed over to one of their names? Do MVNO's run credit checks? Is a name change simple? Can you port from an MVNO to another carrier without issue? Are these all stupid questions?
Help!
