Problems with HTC S710 - HTC Vox

After reading some forum threads, I couldnt find any answers to my two main problems.
First of all, the battery life is horrible. After a day of medium usage the battery has to be recharged. I was trying many different things, but nothing would do any difference in battery life. I have been reading about 2-3 days of battery life. No way. Not with my device.
Isnt there anyone who has traced the problem? Is there any fix I dont know about?
Second, what is this light sensor supposed to do? There dosnt seem to be any difference having it on or off in the settings tab, nor is there any difference in various light conditions. I could hold the device in perfect dark or under a 100 Watt light, there dosnt change anything. I was wondering if this is some bug, fault or not implemented feature. A light sensor is supposed to control the keypad backlight. Am i wrong?
One last thing. Is there any setting to control the brightness setting of the device?
Thanks for your help and time.

1. battery life is great for me. have you installed any software that is doing stuff all the time ? have you changed any power settings ?
2. light sensor is only for keypad light. keypad light will not come on in bright conditions.
I don't think there is any setting for screen brightness (I have been looking all over the place). Would be a good thing for HTC to get out in the next firmware release.

First of all thank you for your reply. As it appears, the light sensor does
work as intended after doing some cleaning around the area of it.
Cant think of any reason for this as the device was never really used
outside or under heavy conditions. The battery life however still is
nowhere near good. No programs were installed at all. I did a hard
reset and avoided to install anything till I get some hold on this issue.
As for screen brightness, you are right. There are no settings to be
found in the menu and nothing seems to be posted around the web.
Any other suggestions?

I have had many pda phones. the difference is that they are full computers and can do alot more then normal phones but never have the battery life.
I have never got more then 2 days from any pda/phone, inc. nokia s60s which are supposed to have have good battery life.
I am getting around 3 days from the htc s710. This is with a few calls every day and around 30mins wifi. Although I recharge every 2 days otherwise its on 1 bar for the end of the third day which is disconcerting.
If you are getting less then this on moderate usage it might have a fault. Presumably you have it under guarantee.

I really have to recharge it every night, otherwise I am out of luck on the next
days morning. The only two reasons for this i can think of are, either its really
a fault of the device or battery, or Bluetooth is draining more energy on this
device than it did on any other I know of. Prior to this I was using a Nokia N73
with the exact same usage and was able to operate it for at least 2 days
without the need of recharging.
I am somehow disappointed by this device. While its a great smartphone overall,
the battery issue is giving me a hard time here.

How is your reception? Bad reception could be a reason for bad battery life.
Isn't the N73 a 3G phone and maybe you have better 3G reception than GSM?
Just a theory...

...i get 60 hours after the 3rd charging circle with bluetooth on all the time and two push mail accounts (company exchange server and windows live mobile push, push is active between 7 am and midnight), some phone calls and web sessions. thats absolutely acceptable.
cheers, lutz

htc-s710
same here friends
bluetooth and 1 exchange over gprs and wifi open all the time
nice battery life.

I have found a bug in the power settings.
Quick qu. (before I tell you what it is)
- have you ever changed the power settings (i.e. screen shut down)
- does your screen switch off (It will always dim - but does it switch off completely) ?

n73 is known for having an above average battery life, so expecting the s710 to be anywhere close to that is asking for dissapointment

I have an E650 and have bluetooth on all day syncd with my tom tom for handsfree calling. Spend about 3 hours a day on the phone, send about 30 txts. if battery is fully charged before i go out i'll have at least 60% left by the time i go to bed. The battery life beats the old xda exec I used to have hands down, so no complaints from me.

Backlight switches off. I cant see anything on the screen, its going black.
Cant comment if its just the backlight or the screen as well.

The problem you have is well known.
Tomtom is causing this.
You have to change some things in the registry settings.
"\HKCU\Control Panel\Power\ value display"
Make this value 30 and after 30 seconds the display is completly off.
This should solve the problem.
Found this on www.pocketinfo.nl

Dear rademaar, I appreciate you advice and help, but I havent ever installed
or used TomTom. While I think that others programs might as well alter
some registry settings and be the cause of the problem, I have to say that we
are talking about a Hard-Reseted, no software-installed Vox here wich cant do
more than a day without charge.
Someone stated that the GSM coverage might be the cause of the problem.
I am starting to think that this might be possible.

I did however check the value you mentioned, and it appears that I dont have
any values inside "\HKCU\Control Panel\Power\", it goes deeper into
"\HKCU\Control Panel\Power\LockLevel" value display gives key "Locklevel=0".
Do you suggest to alter this value or create a new one?

if you backlight is turning off (after dimming), then its not the cause of any issue.
the backlight issue is comprehensively covered here:

Problem w/Vox Keyboard - Anyone Else?
Hey all...
First I want to qualify this post by saying that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SMARTPHONE! I've finally found the convergence of one-handed use w/a full keyboard that does all my contact/appointment tracking, emails, etc.
Now...my problem: I've had the phone about 30 days now, and just last week have had problems with the backspace, carriage-return, shift, function and space keys on the QWERTY keyboard. They will just stop responding in the middle of typing (doesn't matter if it's a message, email, calendar notes, etc.) The only way I can fix the problem is to slightly close & reopen the keypad with a little flex-pressure on either end of the phone.
Luckily Mobile Planet will exchange the phone for me with no charge, but I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem.

Battery\power issue, please help.

Hi,
I am having an issue with my battery: it drains really really fast, I mean I am loosing 10% per hour. It all started when I flushed my first 128mb compatible rom. I went from Mo3ulla latest to Ivans and back to Mo3ulla and all three had this issue. I also noticed that phone doesn't go to standby, backlight off - works, but turning power off after 2 min setting just doesn't do anything.
Apps I have are:
SPB PocketPlus 4, pBar, A2DPToggle, TCPMP, AEButton and that is pretty much it.
Any ideas and help is very much appreciated.
1. kill resident programs on device such us SPB PocketPlus 4, pBar,
2. check device battery status // they may be in charging status (due hardware bug)
3. execute instructions which i write in theme

did all of the things you mentioned in the thread, problem still exists.
The reason I started a new thread is beause it doesn't seem to be rom related. Could the reason be just old or defective battery?
How old is your device/battery?
If it is older than six-eight months, most likely it is soon going to die. That's how it started for me too. Then it'll get worse, like losing charge when plugged into the mains, and your device suddenly dying at around 50%, which will increase later.
The easiest solution would be to buy a new battery. If that solves the case, then cool. If it doesn't, you'll have a backup battery when your current one dies
Getting worse
I've had the device for about 4-6 month, not sure how long previous owner has had it for. New battery is on the way.
Tried everything. I flushed official rom form i-Mate and then Mo3ulla's latest and radio 1.15 - no luck. On one of the forums here I've read that taking battery out for about 5 min helps with fast draining, I've tried it and think it did help for a bit (I could be wrong) but then all problems came back.
Problems:
1. Registered applications after working properly for few days - now gives an error that the app license data can not be red.
PBar 1.5 top bar indicator moving around on the bar, it starts in the original right position and then moves to the middle of the bar.
2. "Turn device OFF if not used for"... option in power settings doesn't work - the device never turns off. "Turn backlight off" - works fine.
As Mo3ulla suggested I checked the GSM band settings - it is set for PCS1900 which I believe is correct for T-Mobile USA. Is it?
I just hope is is not a hardware issue as I am in USA and there are no UNI repair shops in the area.
If you have any idea on what to do please let me know as I am close to desperate mode and will try anything at this point.
when my battery started dying at 50% within 2 weeks i could only get 1 1/2 minutes of use out of it. i tried different ROMS, followed the instructions in the wiki but none of that worked for me.
Basically it was just the battery, i have used it everyday for about 2 years so i had my use out of it. I would definately buy a new battery for what they cost. i got mine on ebay for about £7 ($14 or so)
Yep

NEw batter is on the way already, I am just affraid that it is something else, like hardware error, and if that's the case - I am screwed.
I've noticed the same thing with my Universe. It started after new ROM upgrade just 3 days ago.
Best way

no its not hardware .. in your case its battery ... when battery arrives you will need to proper start use it ....
Update: It's alive
Well it is all better now. I installed Mo3ullas v1(not 128 MB) and device behaved much better: "Turn off power" setting worked and all in all this was excellent rom except for one thing - no A2DP. Then I went with Ivan's V1 and it all looks good now, no strange behavior from apps, power of works. A2DP works and so on, so I guess it was the issue of compatibility of Rom and Device. For some reason 128MB roms don't agree with my (and only my) device. I am looking to by the 64MB ram chips and do the upgrade will see what happens. Thank you all for you help.

Mo3ulla could you clarify what you mean by proper start use it?
Also if anyone knows where I can order just a couple of those 64MB chips - would be greatly appreciated. So far all distributors I contacted want to sell them by thousands and the site that was mentioned here (don't remember the url) that does sell them individually wants $80 and that is way too steep.

Battery life and self powering on.

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone else has had similar problems with their Rafael or has any suggestions...
I first got my Rafael (a stock O2 (UK) XDA Serra) back in February. At that time the battery was lasting about a day and a half between charges which was comparable with my previous Artemis (XDA Orbit). This is with my normal use.
About 6 weeks later the phone was needing recharged after about 5 hours of my normal use. The location I was using the phone hadn't changed, so this can't be put down to signal strength meaning the phone is using more power to compensate. My usage hadn't changed either, and I had not instaled any software that ran up the GPS in the background or anything that woudl cause extra drain.
One thing I did notice before I sent the phone back to O2 for repair was that occasionally I would take the phone from my pocket and the screen would be on, an app would have launched (like SMS or email or something) and the text entry area would be full of a repeated character. So the phone had obviously woken up from standby in my pocket.
The phone (and bettery) went back for repair and came back with a note saying that the fault had been found and repaired - unfortunately it didn't say what the fault was that had been found.
For a few weeks the phone seemed a bit better, but now about 3 weeks later it's doing it again.
Yesterday the phone was left in standby and not used at all. From full charge and just taken off the charger, the battery was dead within about 5 hours!
The waking up issue is a bit more than just inadvertantly touching the power button. I now have the phone in the supplied case/cover the other way around which protects the power button more meaning that I can't switch it on by accident. But sometimes I take the phone out and its on as before.
Even more odd is that sometimes if I pick the phone up of my desk by the sides (ie fingers nowhere near the power button) it switches on. And if I have used the phone and switch it back to standby and go to put the phone down, sometimes it wakes up again before I have managed to put it down...
A soft reset seesm to cure the waking up problem for a while, but after a few hours it seems to come back.
Obviously the phone waking up will cause extra battery drain, and that would mean the two are related or even the same problem. But does anyone have any idea what it could be and why a soft reset seems to sort the problem? Has anyone else seen this problem?
Obvisouly a battery life of just a few hours means this is not such a mobile device anymore!
Cheers,
FM
Update:
I sent the phone back for repair (to O2 UK) and they apparently found and fixed the fault.
When the phone came back it still seemed to have the same problem, but I tried it for about 6 weeks until I was absolutely convinced - it did!
So, back to o2 again, this time it was returned 'No Fault Found' - having done nothing to the phone.
So once again it was sent back, this time I was demanding a replacement handset as they were obviously unable to fix the fault.
A replacement handset turned up a week later. Note that this was not a new handset, but a refurb from the repair centre and it already had about 9 hours of calls on it and a dirty screen!
After putting all my apps and things back on the phone one at a time just in case it was a particular app causing the power on problem and the battery drain, the phone seemed absolutely fine - no switching itself on and battery life of a few days (estimated over two days). This was without the SIM card in though.
After 4 days when all my apps and things were back on I finally inserted the SIM and made my first call on the new handset...
...arrrggghhh....
This handset had a faulty speaker (earpiece, not handsfree loudspeaker)... sounding like a badly tuned analogue radio. Calls to a few numbers confirmed the handset at fault (the cracking started as soon as the speaker activated before the ringing tone started).
So after another heated call with o2 I eventually learned that they are no longer supplying the Serra (Raphael) and that my only option is repair again.
Oh no. Not going to happen. At this point I am 4 or 5 months into a new contract for which I paid for an upgrade to the Serra and have not yet had a new working handset. So I demand a replacement.
As they are no longer supplying the Serra, I have had to make do with an SE Xperia X1 (HTC made anyway, and just rebadged by Sony Ericsson), but in my opinion an inferior phone despite the widescreen.
The X1 has no accelerometer, no TV out, won't run Ton Tom Navigator 5 (of which I have a legit paid for copy), has a few supplied apps missing compared with the Raphael (RSS Hub, WorldCard Mobile - although they are available elsewhere incl links from these forums), and inferior remote control on the headphones (though better headphones, it must be said), and only a 3 row keyboard.
The loss of TF3D is no problem as I never used it anyway - I don't use the X1's 'Panels' either.
The X1 does seems to 'stick' a bit more often than the Serra did as well, but I'm managing to live with it so far - especially as I now have a battery which isn;t dead by 2pm each day!
-FM
P.S. O2 UK customer services were apalling. It was only after 3 months of grief that one day I eventually got to speak to decent people who genuinly seemed to want to help. One bloke (a supervisor!) I spoke to (called Nathan) was the most utterly rude and unhelpful tosspot I've had to deal with in a long time. Not only was he accusing me of 'trying it on' but he refused to even entertain the thought that I had received less than satisfactory service from O2. His superiors wil be receiving a letter very soon, when I eventually get this completely sorted - which it isn't quite yet.

Please advise. Captivate issues galore...

Hi all. I just got a Captivate after using Mattc on my HD2 and I used an Aria for a couple weeks as well. I used Mattc on the HD2 for a couple months and really liked it. I understood it was running from the SD and lived with the other issues like slow wake up and occasional goofiness.
So when I got my Captivate I was thinking, wow, I'll have one of(if not the) fastest Android phone on it's native hardware. Everything should rock. I should be blown away... Not.
HELP!
The brightness settings. WTF! Why did they implement like 10 ways the brightness screws with your day. On my HD2 w/Mattc I set the brightness in settings to where I wanted and it stayed. Forever. Also when it hits 10% it kicks the brightness all the way down. 10%? Com on maybe 5%. But what is worse is when it does kick it down I kick it back up but it dims again at every percent it goes down. ANNOYING. Please let me control my phone... Oh and don't get me started on the Browser brightness. Huh? Even with the browser brightness set at max it's still dimmer than my regular brightness setting. Noticably. I only keep my brightness at like 75-80% too.
Also what the hell is with the lame Calendar notification settings? Are there any?
My question is this. Is there any ROM out there that will strip all that Samsung ideology and give me a stock Android experience. Especially without the brightness issues. Why do I need to slide my notification bar to change brightness? All it does for me is just cause my brightness to vary accidentally when I don't want it to.
Why must I add on programs for my Calendar alerts to function normally? Why?
So again. Is there a ROM out there that will strip all the Samsung goofiness? If I can't get this phone to work like I want I'm going to sell it and look for a Telus HTC Desire to use on ATT. HTC phones are the best man. IMHO
Thanks.

There is no stock Android experience. Android is just the core - Samsung, HTC, etc, they all add specific things in order for their specific hardware to function. If you don't want what comes on your AT&T Captivate, then you can root and uninstall the apps you don't like, flash one of the many, many cooked ROMs available on this forum (just look around - they are everywhere, and all with great pictures and descriptions and huge threads full of information), tweak settings to your heart's content, or anything else you want to do.

Auto brightness has been off. First thing I do-
I do not get audible alerts when a Calendar reminder goes off-(and there is no where in settings to change/check this)
I had to install "Calendar Snooze" to play an audible alert for a Calendar reminder-
Phone is at 10% now fully dimmed. Nice... Considering how bad the battery life is for this phone(for me) I'll be spending a lot of time with the screen fully dimmed.

Try reading a little and you will see you can set the brightness at where you want it by un-checking the automatic brightness setting..Then you can swipe along the status bar to raise and lower the brightness..It will stay where you had it set IF the automatic brightness is unchecked..Where you have the slider at will be the brightest it will swipe to..
Set your alerts to something you can hear and turn up the volume..They work fine.
Battery life is not a issue provided you follow some advise..Bump charge it 1 time and then use it till it drains down to single digits before recharging...also make sure you back out of all programs and turn off wi-fi and gps and syncing when you don't need them. Loose any task killer program you have and run it stock..you will find your battery life is excellent..if not you may or may not have a bad battery..Lastly..if you are really dissatisfied with it..take it back..
Good Luck

In regards to the brightness, turn off auto brightness and the 'power saving option.', that should solve your issue.
As far as removing the AT&T bloatware goes, try Unleash the beast.
If you want to run Froyo try flashing a rom, I used the latest version of Cognition.
Run far away from this phone if you still have the chance.

Thanks for the advice. Although I have done all of those things. I'm kind of coming to one real main pain point that I can't seem to solve. The screen dimming at 10%. Does anyone know how to disable that? Even if I kick the brightness back up after it dims at 10% it will redim at 9% and so on...
Bitter. But hopeful.

Unfortunately, running away from this phone does seem to be good advise. It doesn't mater how slick it is in theory. Uber display and kickass hardware are useless if the basic functionality suffers due to glitches most of the other options don't seem to exibit.
I decided to play the "mod and wait" game with this thing, and I'm regretting it. Broad-brush damnations would have helped me. At this point, enough issues have came up about this hardware that a "broad-brush" sticky may be warranted. The alert issues found by the OP, may be related to his speaker begining to fail. I had a similar issue. Calander and alarm notifications began failing in some apps, but not others. The phone would still ring. Some apps could still use the speaker. Within a week, nothing could use the speaker, and I had to do the "push-on-it" fix.
It's a forum. Posts are opinions. I've been impressed occasionally by the raw performance of this phone. Yet, I've also spent hours, hours, researching problems, applying fixes, flashing, pushing on the speaker, etc. And I've spent hours "waiting" for the thing to do something simple like send an email when it did fine the day before. With as much time and effort as I've put into researching and working on this phone, I feel like I (and others) have not gotten enough stability out of it.
I propose a broad brush damnation for this phone: "slick but intermittent".

I propose a broad brush damnation for this phone: "slick but intermittent".

haha. Thanks for the ,.. opinion. I'm starting to feel the same way about this phone. I had super high hopes. But I'm really going to stick with HTC. They just get it. IMHO.
I think most people regret buying this phone. Or they will, when FroYo never arrives, the lag gets worse and worse, the phone dies on them, and the GPS never come close to working, the market decides not to intall your app, this, that, or the other thing force closes, etc. etc. etc.

Umm froyo is already leaked and OTA is on its way.
Lag has never been an issue.
And GPS is a software fix... proven on these boards over and over.
SHEESH... I'd say go tell somewhere else.

yeah, 5 million people are completely dissatisfied because one guy managed to not know how to operate his phone.....

I think your wrong. I think quite a few people got defective phones and haven't bothered returning them, thinking that if they root it and flash a different rom that would magically fix a broken phone. This is XDA and folks here mostly do this..thus the reason for most of the complaints. Problem is..it won't change much of anything to reflash if the phone is defective..If it is broken to begin with..it will be broken no matter what you do to it.. If yours is defective..quite *****ing about it and get one that isn't..or a different phone entirely. The working ones are great..just like they are supposed to be.
I have 2 of them built in September..both work and neither is defective. This tells me many of those built prior have some issues..perhaps not all of them..but some of them certainly. This certainly doesn't make it right by anyones account..just saying if yours is defective..return it and get one that isn't.
I honestly don't understand people who have the option of doing this, not doing it.The folks at my AT&T store opened 7 different boxes and checked every one of them for any blue tint on the screen and having the 3 button recovery option..for my second one bought at the same time,so I do know there are many out there that ain't working properly..The OP of this thread..is unhappy with it..damn..loose it and be done with it if you are that unhappy..or take that one back and get them to open up the boxes and show you one that works properly...If it was bought mail order..then you should just return it as defective and get your money back..and buy where you can see it first..It's your choice...and your money.

Android Wear - A preproduction?

I'll make no excuse for the title as it seems to fit quite well for how I feel about it.
About two weeks ago I purchased a Sony SW3. Lovely watch and kindof does what I want BUT.... Android wear seems little more than a proof of concept.
At the risk of infuriating AW fans, here are some of my observations:
- I turn gestures off, but the watch still turns itself on when I turn my wrist, this is intermittent behaviour but this can't be rocket science to fix and I'm on V5!
- Was travelling somewhere strange the other day and I routinely add the address of where I'm going to my diary entry (Google calendar). When I was reminded to leave, I was offer the opportunity to navigate there, but I was using a train for most of the journey so only wanted to use navigate when I got the the end station. Call up the 'agenda' entry on my watch, can see the entry, can see the address, but do you think I could get the navigate function to work... NO, touching the address didn;t work, voice commands didn't recognise the foreign restaurant name, and I had no way of entering the address manually! Arrgh
- Cards/notices appearing. What a lovely feature, each time I get a message, email or whatever, my watch lights up and buzzes. Really? Ok I can see that some will find this useful, but really I want to gentle reminder , eg a buzz and if it's convenient I'll see what caused it by switching it on. A bit like theatre/Cinema mode, but I need the vibration to alert me... What I don't need is the thing lighting up every time I get a 'notice', draining the battery and telling everyone who can see! I get quite a few messages and find it strange this feature has not been considered/withdrawn by now. In fact the only useful time the watch should light up is an incoming call so I can see who and accept/reject.
- Whilst on the subject of rejecting a call, why doesn't it offer me the option of rejecting and sending a text message at the same time, a bit like you can when you reject a call on the handset.... Seems an obvious feature really.
- OK Google, doesn't launch applications I've downloaded, eg: I downloaded from the apps store a compass application. OK Google, compass - it gets me info on a company called compass!
- OK Google, Natigate to (insert a name of a contact)... Brings up a linkedin profile....
OK, rant over and I'm happy to concede that it may be my ignorance that I am frustrated so I'm happy to be correctly by fellow early adopters.... Or am I not alone
You've done the same mistake as all wear beginners when it comes to gestures. Forget that setting in watch menu and instead investigate wear companion app settings closer.
Hi thanks for the advice. Just searched the store but couldn't find anything. Suggestions appreciated?
Iain
The wear companion app is the app on your phone which you connect to your phone via. Click cog wheel. Click watch name. Untick tilt to wake option.
When I tell my watch to navigate to somewhere, a beautiful Maps shows up and gets me there... I think you are too fast at judging A.Wear Take time to discover it!
Install Android wear mini launcher also.
Android Wear is built to be minimal - it compliments your phone, it's not supposed to replace it. It just decreases the amount of times you have to pull your phone out of your pocket.
The Apple Watch is the one that's supposed to "replace" your phone in more instances. It's more complicated.
Android Wear is for quick replies, information, and helpful tools.
Welcome to the team by the way!

So, the recommendation I have heard over and over again is in order to increase battery life, disable the features that make the watch useful. Tilt to wake is important, and disabling it on the sw3 does not significantly improve battery life. There are problems with this software. I am on my third watch, and still after a lot of tweaking only get 24 hours (when I am lucky) per charge. This watch is supposed to last over two days. When I am not lucky, I get two hours on a charge.

Yeah. battery life was great on 5.0.2 We just have to wait until the next update, which both sony and google have said that they are working on.
Recharge once a day, and on unplugging, restart the watch. Many people have reported this gives the best results. FWIW I have all options turned on, and as long as I'm not hit with the bug, battery life is about what it was before 5.1.1.
Interesting, but...
Thanks everybody for your thoughts.
Firstly, I have tried switching off motion gestures using the Phones Wear application, but there wasn't an independent setting. I therefore downloaded a third party 'advance setting' application. It offered me more choices but didn't make a blind bit of difference.
Secondly, gestures are a personal thing so I'm not speaking for everybody. As I've already said I don't want the watch switching on every time I turn my wrist (my lifestyle is to active and I find it switching on when I'm doing something rather than when I want to read the time or message) or when I get a message (as I said before I want to choose when I read my messages and I don't want anyone close by to A) see I've got a message and B) be able to read the subject and who it's from). In addition battery life is, for the foreseeable future, a finite resource and all this switching on will reduce the battery life of the watch so it really annoys me that a simple setting 'Gesture OFF' is being completely ignored. I would also vote for 'Cinema mode, including vibrate'..
Thirdly, Yesterday, not for the first time, my battery drained itself in about half a day so I had to recharge the watch by about 3pm. But this time it was a little different. First thing in the morning I noticed the watch struggling to connect to my wifi, it would connect and then connect and then connect. Before anyone jumps on me saying there a problem with my wifi, there are about 10 devices that connect to my wifi and none of them get a problem. In addition I have more than one access point by different manufacturers and the watch has access to two different access points. Security is by password AND MAC address. This got me thinking. Is the wifi chip going into overdrive when it's not connected to an access point and draining the battery? I can't say for sure, but I did notice that the other days the battery suddenly drains is when I'm out and about so it may have been attempting to attached to all the access points when I'm walking about... Only a theory, but what does everybody else think?
Iain
Yea. Drain is somewhere between decent and awful depending on setup. I get two days out of mine.
Gestures is not the same as "tilt to wake". Gestures are let you interact with Google cards by flipping your wrist. Tilt to wake is what you're after. It does just what it says and is turned off in the wear companion app on your phone. The app is called "android wear" and in the app you press a cog wheel symbol, then press the name of your watch. They're you'll find three check box settings.
Always-on screen (eats your battery like omnomnom)
Tilt to wake screen (the one you're after)
Show Google cards (shows notifications on watch)
Two days?
Wow you're getting two days out of your battery, I can only dream...
Actually I'm not being truthful with the above. After my discovery with WiFi yesterday, I turned it off today. But for good measure, I switched screen on, to on.
It's been 18 hours off charge and the battery still has 56% left... OK it's not quite a day yet and as with all testing needs to be conducted over a few days but what a difference, even better considering your comment about the battery drain with the screen on!
Thank you for the tip re tilt to wake, I've now turned it off so in theory that should improve the battery life still further.
If today's results become consistent over the next few days it'll pretty conclusive that there's a problem with the WiFi.
I tried tilt to wake for a day. It went on all the time. Always on is so dim I can't see the watch anyway. I use tap to wake with highest brightness
I've just started to try gestures. I wanna see if it's a gimmick or actually useful.
WiFi to blame
OK, is been two nearly three days since I switched WiFi off.
In that time by the end of the day (with the watch face always on) I've been left with between 50% to 25% depending on actual use. Given that it sometimes would run out of battery by 3pm this is a great improvement and highlights that there are serious problems with the WiFi implementation.
I'm now happy I purchased
I like the tilt to wake but I notice it comes on a lot. Especially when I drive at night and my whole car lights up. I like the tilt features for scrolling through notifications. I wish there was one for dismissing, but that would probably lead to missed cards.
My LG G Watch is pretty much ready for a charge by the end of the day.
Sadly my hopes for a smart watch was to save battery life on my phone, but I am finding that bluetooth on all day tends to yield me the same battery life as if I just pull my phone out each time. Overall i love the watch for when I am in the pool and busy at work.
I agree!
Tilt to wake is problematic and poorly thought through as there are way to many scenarios where it activates when not required.
I can see the logic behind moving through cards via tilt but for me I continue to switch this off as well as I find it's very easy using my other hand and there are not many time I can't do that unless driving, but then, I shouldn't be reading my messages when driving anyway... : -)
Also since turning WiFi off, after 18 hours off charge I normally have between 30-40 battery left so the battery life has stabilised.
Now looking forward to the next Sony smart watch that should be release in November.
Latest update of the port to Samsung gear 2 allows for screen always on for two workdays. I can go with that. On my wishlist now is dismiss card gesture.
I actually like the gestures. With them on, I easily go through a day. On the weekends I can see me turning it off just to conserve battery. But I use it to turn on the screen and flip through notifications all the time, and seems pretty consistant. It always does what I want when I want. The problem is it comes on when I dont want.
If the watch had an AMOLED, you could fix this by using the same black face for both ambient and active modes.
I really like the Gear S, but hopefully the 2nd gen Android watches include some of the same features. Honestly all I need from the LG G Watch is a speaker and I'd be set.

I'm using Sony Z ultra and really want to buy SW3 for more option. Howere, when i see your review, i'm a little bit dissapointed:crying:
Depends
I can understand your disappointment, but I'm not disappointed as I consider it to be new technology and I was keen to get in early and I expected some issues.
For my part, I'm now very happy with my purchase and Amazon in the UK are now selling it at just under £100 so I also believe good value.
I am however, beginning to wonder if Wifi is the cause of the battery drain. Whilst I haven't had Wifi on since my first observation I'm thinking now it is probably a shirt sleeve activating the watch when I'm not aware and thats draining the battery very quickly. It's early days at the moment, but on two occasions I've been out and wearing a coat, on both occasions the battery was dead by the time I got home. Today I went out and wore a coat but switched cinema mode on... Battery perfect! Needs some more testing, but....

When have ever beats any manufacturer of a watch our phone give realistic battery life specs.

Everything that bothers me/what I love about the Mix 3

Hey together. I have been using the Mix3 for a few month now. The black 265GB variant, China version with international Software.
But I got to say that there are a few problems I wasn't able to solve. Maybe you can!
So here is the List
Love
Screen ratio
MIUI
The overall Look. Gave it to a friend so he can call someone... Damn this phone looks good!
Position of Volume-rocker and Powerbutton
Wireless-charging
Not that good or worse
Thickness
The battery lasts barely a day (medium use)
The AI button... I hit this one too often by accident
No pocketdetection. The screen activates too often by accident (while calling, in the pocket or just picking up)
While calling you got to position the speaker very near to your ear, because if you move it a bit you can't understand the one on the other side anymore
inconsitent strength of the magnetic slider (sometimes it moves very hardly and other times too easy)
connection delays with bluetooth devices. If you did not connect a device in the last few days you got to manually connect the device (click on it in bluetooth settings)
If you got solutions for my concerns you can maybe safe it from getting abandoned or beeing forwarded to my brother
agree on AI button - hate it! especially in phone case it gets triggered too often just holding the phone
any way to mute that button or change it to another usage? I think I can only deactivate the google assistant itself, but it keeps reacting starting it up and asking to enable the assistant again

Totally agree with the AI button thing, I click it ALL the time by accident it's super annoying. There is a thread on XDA for changing the functionality and a Magisk module as well. The Magisk module is for the Mi 9 but may work for the Mix 3 as well, not entirely sure on that. I haven't experienced the Bluetooth issues though, and I have the global hardware (6 GB RAM 128 GB ROM). My Bluetooth works flawlessly. The slider does feel a bit inconsistent, not sure how/why but I rarely use the selfie camera anyway so it's not a big deal for me. I feel like the battery is pretty average for a smartphone, nothing great but not bad. I can usually get through a day with it and its better than my V30 so that's a plus. Hope you're still enjoying the phone overall!

No problem
Personally, I don't have any issues with the thickness and actually, it makes it easier to hold with my large hands. I have had thinner devices, like the LG V30, S9 Plus, and Note 9, but they just feel like toys by comparison.
The AI button isn't an issue for me. I am not rooted but I have used ADB to uninstall Xiaomi's when I was using the Chinese ROM my device came with and used ADB to remove Google Assistant when I installed the Global Stable ROM. I have no issues finishing a day of very heavy use with about 10% battery left using both SIM slots simultaneously. On average, I finish my day with about 30% left, but I do travel often, so those days, I spend more time watching YouTube on planes and texting more than anything else. I have used ADB though to remove a lot of bloat that can run and waste battery life.
I don't use Bluetooth devices at all so i can't really comment on how well or how well it doesn't work on the Mi MIX 3. However, many devices do experience Bluetooth issues for various reasons. Firmware updates for cars or the Bluetooth in the device itself is usually the more common answer. No manufacturer is exempt from these issues.
I definitely agree with the earpiece. Because it is technically set in the bottom part of the device, it has to send sound straight through the other to get to your ear. If your ear is right over the hole where this comes through, it's fine, but it does take some getting used to and makes it hard to rest the phone on your shoulder and still talk on it.
I haven't had any issues with the slider. From the day I got my device, the slider has been stiff and robust. I often use it just fiddling around as well. The magnets pull and push feel just as strong as the day I opened the box. I also haven't noticed the screen being on when it is in my pocket and have never had my screen on when removing it from my pocket. I do have double tap to wake and lift to turn on the screen disabled though. Perhaps it is one or a combination of both of those settings causing that issue for you.

I have some issues with MIUI as well. Would they stop me from buying another Xiaomi device? No.
Tue stock apps suck! The default Messaging app doesn't support rotation and doesn't display group texts under those in that. It splits tue group texts under their individual threads. Changing Messaging apps leaves me with notification sounds that can't be changed because Xiaomi developers are stuck in the years of KitKat with how their sounds work!
The change to not being able to lock the bootloader when switching ROM's is probably the worst I can think of. I get the reasoning behind the change but I bought thebChinese model as the Chinese model because I wanted more RAM.
MIUI settings are also lacking when it comes to restricting roaming from one SIM but not the other.
My T-Mobile plan works in multiple countries and I want that to roam when outside of the US. My Telus SIM though is insane for roaming so I don't want that SIM roaming but I want that SIM left enabled to see who calls and texts.
All that said and a few more gripes. The Mi MIX 3 is still a superb device and one I don't regret buying.
Notifications are awful. I have yet to have a notification display on the lock screen. When I do receive new mail or an SMS message, it can take up to 40 minutes before notifying me if the screen is off. If the screen is on I get the notification within a couple of minutes but that is only if the screen is on. Screen on means the screen is being displayed and the lock screen has been dismissed. It does not mean that the always on ambient display is on. That is just as bad as the display being completely off which makes me think that the problem lies with the phone being locked and is not just an over aggressive doze problem. I am using the notification repeater app and I also use Auto-notifications with its notification categories feature. Both of those have helped a little bit but it is rare that I get a notification within 10 minutes of my phone receiving e-mail or text messages when the screen is off (10 minutes is actually good).
There is also an issue with Android calendars. These aren't the calendars attached to your gmail account and they are not local calendars as well. Android calendars are usually created by 3rd party apps that offer holiday calendars for every country, sports scedules for every NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NCAA teams (motor sports and European football in some apps). The apps that also create TV listing calendars create their calendars as Android calendars. Any calendar app for Android can display them and you can choose to display or hide them individually within any android based calendar apps. Not with MIUI though. I can see them in the settings of any calendar app I install and can set them as hidden or viewable but they will not display as a calendar in any calendar app. MIUI has a few nice features but it is not worth the lack of timely notifications and it would also be nice if I could actually display all of my calendars. I have gone the custom GSI route and there were issues with every GSI based ROM I tried. I could install every GSI ROM I tried. I could even install Resurrection Remix GSI without a problem (repairing and resizing the system partition so you can install GAPPS is easier than most people realize. I kept running into deal breaker isssues with each GSI ROM though. I don't remember what the issue was with BlissROM but I do remember taking half a day to try and find a work around to no avail. Pixel Dust had an annoying random reboot problem and Resurrection Remix seemed to work just fine until it randomly would display a Setting up phone message after logging into the phone at a very random time. It would sometimes do this somewhere with the first few hours of use but could go as long as a day and a half before doing it. The only way to get past that screen was to get into the phones settings and clear out your fingerprints and set the phone to not require any type of password, pin or pattern. Once you clear those out the phone will continue to boot. If you want security you will need to setup security again and you will find yourself doing this all over again anywhere within the next hour too 24 hours. This is a known issue and there is a thread about it. It is a ROM issue because it is doing it on many different brands of phones. It is doing it very randomly though and the developers of the ROM have not had it happen to one of their phones yet. It makes the ROM unusable for those of us that are running into it though which is why I am back to MIUI (eu version) and in my opinion, MIUI ruins what would be a very good phone experience.
The pocket detection is occasionally driving me crazy, it's an issue on the PE rom too. The settings pull-down is active even on the lock screen, so while it's in my pocket it will sometimes turn wifi/bluetooth on or off, etc. I'm hoping the Cyanogen rom will eventually improve this. Only seems to be a problem for me when the radio app is automatically activated when I turn on my bluetooth headset.
Bluetooth connection also causes me some minor irritation. It won't auto-connect to the A2DP unit in my car, although it does connect to the phone module. I've been looking through the configuration files trying to find something to tweak this, but the structure of the current roms makes finding anything useful almost impossible.
AI button, also a hassle, but it can't be that bad because I haven't bothered to install the Magisk module to remap it yet. I much prefer a button to call up the assistant rather than "ok google".
Battery, I have no idea what you're talking about, but I guess it depends on what device you came from. This device is far and away the most battery frugal I've ever had, by a long shot, and the speed of the wireless charging makes it even better.
I never have a problem with the earpiece, but I do remove the lint from it fairly regularly, maybe that's the problem? If anything, the sound on calls I would rate as way better than previous phones.
My slider mechanism is also variable. Sometimes it's perfect, other times it's hard to get it to slide, but I think it's more to do with the friction from my fingers than the mechanism itself, sometimes the surfaces feel super-slippery! Give me cheap, rubberized plastic and a removable rear cover and battery every day of the week!

Battery, I have no idea what you're talking about, but I guess it depends on what device you came from. This device is far and away the most battery frugal I've ever had, by a long shot, and the speed of the wireless charging makes it even better.

I guess you are right there with the point from where you came from. In comparison to my "old" Huawei Mathe 10 Pro the Battery is bad. But on the other Hand the Mix3 has (fast) Wireless Charging :good:
I checked the last weeks my Battery stats and usage. There was nothing uncommon. To me it is not satisfying, especially when I am on a trip (like last week) I barely made it back to the Hotel with a few % left.
Just to get this into Context (for most of you tl;dr):
Listening to music for 2 hrs
Navigation for public transport - also active for 2 hrs
checking Mails - hard to measure
searching for a place for diner - 20 min
checking social media... every minute is too much
In my opinion this is an average usage and therefore the battery is considered bad to me.

I think you must have a problem somewhere. Which software are you running?

That's the deal breaker, had to go custom ROM route, no smart lock is no good.

Appreciate that tipp, but I don't use any case. (Why buy a pretty phone, when you put plastic around it?!) *screen is crying silently in fear :crying: *
Love the phone. The screen, everything. Running Lineage at the moment.
Really hate:
Notifications on MIUI. Seriously.
The process around flashing roms. Vendor image, dirty flash doesnt work (at least for me), switching roms difficult. Just very, very tiresome.
Would I buy it again? Definitely.

Mine is running rooted crDroid ROM, which allows me to address most of these points.
Thickness: this is a tradeoff for sliding display.
Battery: crDroid is very good battery-wise, but also installed magic module LKT and get easily 1.5 days of heavy use now
AI button: Used magisk module and button remapper APK to remap mine, for me single press does nothing (because like you i press it accidentally all the time) double press toggles flashlight and long press launches google assistant.
Pocket detection: You can enable this in crDroid settings
Holding phone to ear: I don't have this problem
Slider: My slider took a bit of wearing in. That might sound strange but it was a bit squeeky and felt weaker than it should be to begin with but after a few months of use it now feels great.
Bluetooth delays: No idea, never use bluetooth. Sorry about that one.
