Best California T-mo Radio ROM? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Many of you may think the subject of this thread is strange, and I don't blame you. Why would anyone ask this? Well, I have tested a handful of radio ROMs with a handful of the WM6 ROMs and the only one that seemed not to have the missed calls/messages problem is 2.19.11. I know some folks have reported that the problem seems to only affect Cingular users of the newer radio ROMs, but I am on T-mo and I haven't found a good one yet. The curveball factor here is that about 3 years ago, T-mo bought Cingular's network in California, and I don't know if this means I am experiencing the "Cingular effect".
Anyone here on T-mo in California (I am in Orange County) with push e-mail working and a radio newer than 2.19.11 that isn't missing any calls/messages?

bumppity bump

yup, I agree. I'm in So. Cal too.

I'm located in San Diego and I'm experiencing missed calls and dropped signals with 2.40.11. Although this one seems to have a better signal than 2.19 but I still have missed calls but it is a lot better of letting me know that I have voicemails.

Yeah, I think we are all going to see the same problems the Cingular users complain about with the newer radios...2.40.11 was one of the more promising options, too.

I use the 2.40 im n the 909 no problems really

Leave it to a Marine to muck things up for me
I should have known people down at Pendleton would definitely have experience with this! Good to have you here. Anyone else want to be a tie breaker? I may have to test 2.40.11 again now that my battery issue is resolved.

I have been using the 2.40.11 with NTS vanilla and have noticed no problems thus far. It seems to acquire signal faster than the 2.19 I had been using previously. I was thinking of trying the 2.61 or 2.67 which have been reported as possibly being better, but very few reports on these so I'm reluctant to switch.
The signal with 2.40 *may* be a tad stronger for me than 2.19, but in reality it is very hard to quantify. To my knowledge, there is not evidence that the number of bars can be reliably compared since it is possible that different radios may assign various bars for the same signal. However others have reported more dramatic differences.
I am in the SF Bay area using t-mobile.
I am not a marine, although my dad was one in WWII.
====================
13/5/2007- Correction.... I have not absolutely positively seen missed calls with this 2.40 radio. I installed it in both my wife's and my MDA. She missed a bunch of calls from and also I missed some from her. Then I tried when we were together and established positively absolutely that some calls are missed. We use t-mobile in the SF Bay Area.
I don't know whether to go back to 2.19 or try 2.67. But this rom is No Good. Nice features or not, the primary purpose is to be a phone and if the phone does not receive calls it is no good.

Well. I live in the 562 area. i tested all the latest radio rom and it seem that 2.19 is still the best one out there no miss call, but the other rom get better signal tho.

i run radio 02.69.11 and so far it works great.. its fast connecting and got better reception then the 2.25 (it said it was 2.19 in the filename) i had before..
have it running for 2 days now.

Radio ROMs

I need to know the most stable Radio ROM for WM6. Even with 2.19 i was missing calls and text messages.
Since several days i use the 2.69.11 radio rom.
In combo with NBD.v4 (Not Big Deal) WWE which i am using for testing.
Overhere i had with all radio roms 1 til 0 bars. (Country side)
With 2.69.11 i have most off the time 2 bars inside my home and outside a full signal.
Althought i'm not a big caller i never had lost calls or disconnections.
Even when i am driving and use my Bluetooth GPS reciever and make a call via my Jabra bt200 i can recieve sms messages or sent them.
Without losing my 24/7 up gprs connection or call.
About the battery drain i can't tell you my findings because last couple off days i flashed my device several time and due the testing my device is almost 24/7 attached at my USB cable.
But i noticed when i am at work and my phone left at home, 8 hours later my phone has lost 10% off his power.
Until now no numerous problems

Faria posted an excellent thread earlier today and it seems to be right on the money... Basically the best radio rom is the one that works for your provider. Unfortunately WM6 seems to add a wrinkle to this so even the Cingular 2.25 doesn't work on Cingular well (or it doesn't for me). So I'm using the T-Mo 2.19 UK one and I haven't noticed any missed calls or SMS since switching to it. But every time I put 2.25 or higher on my phone with WM6 I see issues with missed SMS and Calls.
So if you are missing with 2.19, You should probably try another rom like 2.25 (Cingular or T-Mobile, but they are different, just the same numbers). 2.47 never worked well for me even on WM5 so I've never tried it on WM6. 2.61 and 2.69 both gave me lots of missed calls and sms.

Yep i've read that topic.
My provider has the 2.18 rom provided with there Wizards.
By luck maybe the 2.69 works for me.
I have had terrible problems with all radio roms above (and inclusive) of v2.19
2.69 > So many missed called, unbelivable
2.47 > Exactly the same as above, but much quicker at finding a signal
2.19 > Missed Calls (no missed sms), couldnt dial often (just ended) and signal kept dropping
2.07 > Came with the phone, and Im going back to it in a few mins! Never a problem!
I see on the ftp site there is a Summiter 2.17 . Anyone ever use that one?
ftp://xda:[email protected]_Only_Thread/Summiter_2.17_Radio_Only.zip
Also see there is a 2.07 on there from QTek (is that the one you are referring to, Whiterat)?
ftp://xda:[email protected] NLD (rip from 2180706 NLD RUU Prodigy).rar
If not, can you upload the one you have? Is it a radio only rom?
I use 2.25 from Cingular and seems ok!
Never miss calls ou sms!

Its worth a read. My own experience contradicts it some (ie: on WM6, the Cingular 2.25 radio doesn't seem to work as well as the T-Mo 2.19 UK radio for me), but for the most part I think it makes a lot of sense.
Upgrading the the latest radio isn't always the best thing. Find the one that works for you and then stick with it (for us geeks, thats hard not to always be on the latest version though )
mfrazzz:
I downloaded the original update from o2 (since mine is a mini s) Extracted the NBF from the installer then extracted the NBF into the individual NB's.
One of which is the GSM
If you would like it then I can upload to FTP.

My experience agrees with yours Mfrazzz. Since I moved to WM6 I've only had consistent luck with 2.19.11 UK. I've read that most of the issues seem to be with Cingular on the higher numbered radio roms. I had particularly bad luck with the 2.61 rom in missed calls and late notifications of voicemails, despite its higher signal strength and faster data throughput. I also tried the 2.25 Cingular rom, which worked well for me with WM5, but missed calls again. Since then, I've been paranoid about trying anything new.
Regards,
I have had missed calls and notifications with every radio rom and WM6 from 2.19 and up. 2.19 was the most reliable, but not completely.
Are you sure its not just crappy service or possibly you have no signal when your missing calls and texts? I have ran 2.19 with every rom I flash and have NO problems ever.

I can honestly say I haven't had any problems with missed calls/SMS with ANY of the radio ROMs. I've tried them all -- 2.19, 2.25, 2.47, 2.61 and 2.69.
The only dropped call issue I've had was due to the inability of the radio and GPRS playing together at the same time. But that's already been discussed as being one of the quirks of the Wizard . . . ad nauseum. So, no reason to revisit that. Once I was aware of it, it didn't matter and I changed some of the settings for my programs that automatically update so I don't notice the problem any more.
I'll have to go along with the line of thinking that it doesn't really matter so much on the radio ROM as it does the coverage area that you're in. But, that's just me. . .

After I flashed 2.19, it seemed to work ok, but a few days later my wife said she called me and left a voice message, I never got it (but it was there when I called my voice message). So, the next day I called myself from my landline a few times throughout the day. I had full bars on the wizard, and one of the calls didn't go through, although the phone rang 4 or 5 times on the landline end (not the normal 1 or 2 when the wizard is off). I then left a voice message, that never came through. I waited a few hours but I was never notified of a new voice message. I then called my Voice message and sure enough, it was there. I only happened 2 or 3 times, but it did happen.
My experience mirrors that of many others and I have tried to characterise the issue based on the state of the phone.
It seems that if I am "using" the phone for surfing (via WiFi or GPRS), checking contacts, playing Bubble Breaker, etc. then an incoming call will get through on radio ROMs higher than 2.19.
If the phone is asleep due to power save then the call will be missed. When I look at the phone under these conditions, the lights in the left and right softkeys illuminate but this then goes away.
With 2.19 I find signal strength here in South Florida and in my house not quite as good as later radios but it has to work as phone reliably which it seems not to on the later radios.
Has anyone else been able to isolate behaviour like this ?
2.69 on tmobile running xplore 1.1 i missed 25 calls and 15 txts in a 4 hour period (showed 3 bars of service).. boy i had some pissed people. back down to 2.19 for me...havent had much of any issue with 2.19 except it takes forever to regain lost signal
all wm6 roms must cook well done!
hi guys my personal opinion ,radio rom 2.07.10 is a best radio rom.this rom is perfect rom.i am living in capetown/south africa.i tried almost all radio roms on wm6.but no way.i always had big issue with miss calls, sms, slow gprs connection.if you dont have to use wm6 just turn back wm5.i dont know what exacly problem is on wm6?maybe our rom lords can give us nice solution, like faria,mo
ski and others.i thing wm6 isnt %100 ready for wizard yet.i am running faria wm5 3.3 and radio rom 2.07.10.i have no miss call issue.by the way thanks faria and all other rom cookers.

Well, since you are on my network and in my areal I think I will use this one.
I used T-Mobile Cellular Service , IPL/SPL 3.08 , Radio ROM 02.25.11 from USA T-Mobile .
Never have any missed call again !!!
Using Xplore 1.1 and previously Nottoosmart vanilla. 2.19 seems to be clearly the best one.
The other ones, I had weird problems where I would leave it in my pocket for like an hour or so, and I would get missed calls. My phone would work okay only if I'm using the phone, unlike keeping it in my pocket. Kindof hard to explain. It's like when I'm not playing around with the phone and stored in my pocket, my radio rom doesn't work.
For your voice mail problem, are you sure you have voice mail notifications activated? This should be in your voice mail options.

Calls Being Dropped!!?!?!

Hey guys, for the last week my phone has been dropping calls, sometimes when i answer or even in the middle of a conversation I don't hear anybody on the other side all i hear is my voice being echoed back to me.
Getting frustrated.....should i install that new radio that has been floating around, maybe that will solve the problem?
Rom: Dutty's DualTouch V2
Radio: 1.27.12.17
I've been running this setup for at least 3 weeks now.
Thanks for any help.

Since Wednesday, radio 1.27.12.32 no longer works for T-Mobile in Norcross, Georgia area. I tried on both Kaiser it didn't get signal. But other radios got full signal.
well that sux...wonder if that thing works up here in Canada.
anyway, I think this is a rom issue not a radio issue.....just a hunch...but still hoping to hear some feedback and hopefully a solution.

Funny you should say that, I've experienced severe signal loss with 1.27.12.11 in Tampa, Fl. that same day.
I switched to 1.27.12.32 & all is good ... but, I am on at&t.
Something is definitely going on.
umvagia0, switch up your radio till you find one that works for you & it's not a ROM issue!
i'm on att in the new york area and was haveing a similar problem. tried a couple of different radios, finaly tried .31 and have useing it for 2-3 weeks. the problem is not totaly gone but is a heck of a lot better. out of 100 calls 20 will drop and i know 1/2 are att problems (dead spots). hope this helps
i think it is something with at&t network. My dads phone is bone stock and his would loose signal completely. And now mine with schaps rom and 12.32 radio is being weird as well. i get singal but no calls come thru and sometimes i cant dial out. So this is what i did i just shut off 3G and bam my problem is fixed. This only happens in our house and other thing i have noticed is if left on automatic phone keeps cycling between 3G and regular network and it never did it before.
So after 6 lines of *****ing my conclusion --> its the at&t network
ditto for me in the SF BAy Area. Got Q's Rom with the latest ATT Radio.. was fine for a week or two then this past week i've been dropping calls, extended connection times (seems like the phone hangs but actually just waiting..), and having intermittant issues with data as well.
thought it was the radio too.. but it seems like ATT??
My fiance with a ATT Samsung 'sync' is having dropped calls too.
Well, I'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem. I'm not on the at&t network, i'm running it under the rogers network up here in canada.
I switched radios to 1.27.12.32 earlier tonight....hopefully that will work out a little better for me... i'll keep u posted on it.
thanks for the help.
it could be the bluetooth problem??? are u using bluetooth when the call drop?? cause there is a bluetooth fix patch for it to fix the call drop problem during a bluetooth call

Impossible to find a radio w/out dropped calls- T-mobile UK

I have tried so many different radios with Dutty's latest 6.1 rom, and all of them continually drop calls. IS there a a Rom & radio combo that works efficiently in the uK?? I mean, dropping calls is a deal killer no matter how fun these roms are??
I have never upgraded to the 1.65 terror radio yet, and plan not too. Just looking for advice as thread searching has not worked out so well. Right now I am on 1.58.16.27, the last 1.58 had no GPS, but both drop calls within minutes.
Any advice appreciated
Have you tried the 1.64.08.21?
trying it now
will report back tonight!
phone rings, data & gps too: NO SOUND
Another disastrous radio. What is wrong? Could it be this rom?
same here, sometimes, only me could hear the voice from the other end, but they couldn't hear me, it happens after several minutes talk. some times, it disconnect from beginning, hell of it. 1.64.08.21
dropped calls are usually due to the phone service. How many bars are you picking up in your area? If you have 1-2 bars, I guarantee you will get a lot of dropped calls. If you try a stock T-mobile Vario III rom, do you get better possibilities? If this is the case, you might have to play around with the operator settings. I always get dropped calls in my house because of the low reception. I live in an area sorrounded by a lot of hills, so it's difficult to pick up certain coverages. When I go to work on the other hand, I never get a drop call. Hopefully this info can help you find a better solution to your problem.
had the wrong radio
I was using 1.65.14.06=disaster, let's see what 1.64.08.21 does. will report back
My mistake, please delete.
No Problems with UK T-Mobile here
I am have only recently upgraded my trusty Hermes (Vario II) to this Kaiser (Vario II) and here in the Swindon area and during journeys in the car have had no problems at all. In fact this Kaiser phone is far clearer that the Hermes ever was - I have tried 3 radio ROMs and all are great. I get a useable GPS lock within 30 secs without running GPS test too.
So I cannot agree with your comments about T-Mobile and the radios - could it be some other software that you are using? Is the radio poor as soon as you have the new OS ROM and new Radio ROM?
I use T-Mobile UK and I don't have these issues either. I have tried lots of ROM's in the last few weeks and all have been fine. I get the occasional "I answer the call but can't hear them" but I get that on my Imate 8150 also, so I think its a reception issue.
I'm currently using Laurentius26 V4 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=389915 and radio 1.64.08.21 included in that ROM. The ROM is very good indeed, fast and stable, and the radio is as good as any I have used. Perhaps you had a dodgy ROM flash mate?
So far 1.64 08 21 : Data, GPS, & Voice work
Just need to wait a and try a bunch of calls to see if they stick or drop.
I am glad that radio works so far for you. Hopefully that one won't give you any problems, it seems to be one of the most stable radio's out there.
Hey up there, I have been using NoThrills Rom W6.1 with 1.65.14.06 radio, had no problems at all, good GPS and good battery life. The rom is quick too, and I'm from the UK
No probs here.
im on t-mobile uk.using 1.64.08.21-no problems,good gps,good signal... i had before 1.65.XXXX and i had problems with droped calls...

Tmobile UK - Touch Pro poor phone use

My new HTC Touch Pro appears to have far worse phone reception compared to my HTC TyTN II for the Tmobile UK network.
Touch Pro Radio: 1.02.25.19
TyTN II Radio: 1.27.12.11
I've set my phone band to GSM to save battery.
Ot has been tweaked in no other way yet.
a) At home, I nearly always got a usable signal on the TyTN II with some drop outs. With the Touch Pro - its the other way round - mostly searching with occasional usable signal.
b) Travvelling from Leeds to Harrogate. The TyTN II would mostly hold a good signal with only a few drop outs. The Touch Pro was "Searching" most of the way.
c) Central Leeds, both phones have good signal.
d) Sat at my desk in Harrogate. The TyTN II has a usable signal where the Touch Pro only occassionally has a usable signal.
I love the device, but am very dissappointed with the phone signal performance. So much so, I am considering returning the device. I hope there's an new Radio ROM very soon.
I would be interested to hear other TMobileUK users experiences.
Thanks
Mike
Soory, this has already been discussed in several topics:

Does seem to be a common TmobileUK problem!
There do seem to be a lot of comments about poor signal strength.
Personally my signal is the same as ever, but I think I may pinch my wife's T-Mobile SIM sometime over the weekend, just out of curiosity... Her MDA Touch has terrible signal in our house, so I'll have to see if the Raphael is any better or worse.
I am also tempted to buy the touch pro, and am with t-mobile due to their unrivalled web'n'walk data packages. I don't want to wait till t-mobile get their act together with the vario IV (they might include a updated version of the radio which works better with their network).
Is there anyone who is getting good coverage on t-mobile with this phone and if so where are you located in th u.k?
I'm in the Middlesex area, not very far at all from Heathrow airport.
Signal strength at home for me is pretty good, it varies between 2 and 5 bars depending on where I am in the house but I nearly always have a H at the top rather than a G! (anyone else other than me think that the Touch Pro's G icon is ugly? lol)
When I'm out and about away from home I've noticed much weaker signals though, never lost the network completely yet mind you. Thankfully I'm on a "Solo" sim only contract with T-mobile and my 30 day contract is already passed so I can now change it. Other people's comments about the network on here have scared me, so I've already got a porting authorisation code from them (I even told the T-Mobile customer service person I spoke to about everyone's comments on this forum, he seemed quite surprised to say the least) and I will be moving to Vodafone in a couple of days!
Vodafone Sim only deals are very similar to T-Mobile's prices (even better at the £20 level thanks to a limited time offer from Vodafone that's currently running) and although mobile internet use with Vodafone is more expensive than T-Mobile on a daily basis, they both do the £7.50/month for unlimited internet so I'll definitely be adding that!
Also has anyone tried these signal boosting sticky pads to improve reception? (I don't have any experience with these so don't know whether these things have any merit or are just a con)
tbh I wouldnt worry about it at the moment, the stock shipped radio version in my Hermes (1.06.00.10, or something like) was crap for me but remember people we get radio updates quite often even now for older devices so lets see , when the vario IV ROM emerges, how good the updated radios are?
Its all part of the game.
Perhaps once the issues for flashing diamond radios have been sorted then we could see if a daimond radio might remedy the issues?
Just out of interest has anyone here got a Touch Pro and is using it on Orange UK?? Since they both operate on GSM1800 and UMTS2100 any problems with the device should really occur for them also?
O2-UK and Vodafone UK (GSM900) stats would also be helpfull?

No different to any other area of technology, the fact is that if you live on the cutting edge and get the newest of the new and the best of the best, there will be issues, and rough edges to iron out. At least with HTC phones 95% of the problems will be resolved in a few months with ROM/radio updates and the wonders pulled off by the chefs here.
For those wanting a safe stable and mature platform from day one with yesterday's-but-still-ok tech, there's the Kaiser or Hermes. Or just wait a few months before getting a Touch Pro.
Best of the best for a phone which has poorer reception on my network than the previous iteration (TYTN II) ? I don't think the logic in that statement stands up somehow.
i've got same issue with t-mobile sim and pro. same spot kaiser has full 3g reception pro none
So mine's gone back due to lousy reception on T-Mobile UK in my house (my Hermes and my other half's Kaiser have no such problem).
Gutted, 'cos compared to my current Vario II it was a Rolls Royce.
So what do I do now? Risk trying another or wait till a version with new radio is out?

I'd say go again when TMobile release theirs, at least then it's all their problem if you want to send it back (again!).

Or maybe wait for the SE Xperia X1. I'll skip the Touch Pro because of the reception issue. As the Diamond has the same problem since the beginning, I don't believe in a software fix for this problem.
Newbie question, sorry . I havent even fully worked out what the "radio" is! Is it the same as a new ROM?
My Touch Pro will arrive today or tomorrow. How likely is it that the signal performance of this phone will improve if a new Radio can be developed? I will have 10 days to return the phone if necessary, and change to another provider/contract, which is a shame as TMobile have arguably the best (data) contracts.
Stick or twist?
If you have this problem, make sure you report it to HTC like I did.
The more who do - the more chance of a fix.

A new ROM can contain various components. Official HTC or Carrier ROM's generally contain the OS (~100Mb), the Radio (~20Mb), the Splash Screens (~1Mb?), and the Bootloader (also small, but I can't remember how small). So they're fully loaded. Sometimes official Radio-Only updates are released, but from what I remember they're not that common.
Cooked ROMs around here are generally just the OS (and sometimes a compatible Radio if the OS actually relies on a specific Radio). The OS is all that you'd really notice much of a difference in, for day to day purposes, as it's the bit that contains "Windows Mobile".
It is possible to flash any one of the components seperately. For the purposes of solving signal issues, it should only be necessary to update the Radio component. If you do this, then all your settings, programs, etc would be untouched, 'cause it's just the bit of code that controls the "Phone" part of your device, rather than the "Windows Mobile" part.
If you get a Touch Pro now, and it's got bad T-Mobile 3G reception, you can either put up with 2G signals until a Radio update is released (officially or otherwise), or send it back. Personally, I'd do the former, as I can't see it taking more than a couple of weeks for the T-Mobile ROM to show it's face, and that'll have the T-Mobile optimised radio in it, which you'll be able to upgrade to...
Thanks for your reply sub69. Very helpful and much appreciated .

With mine, it wasn't that it was dropping from 3G to 2G. It was losing the signal totally. So I would have been missing voice calls too.
Perhaps I wasnt as clear as i intended in my last post here but, as a member has already said the reception issues are most likely down to the radio stack rather than a poor device, this was an issue with the Hermes when it was first released (August 2006) and it was remedied about a month later with a radio update, im surprised people are sending thiers back so hastily!?!?
The thing i would HIGHLY recommend is (once we have HardSPL and etc...) to flash the radio stack which accompanies the Vario IV ROM once it is released /leaked. This radio version (if different) would have the TmobileUK tweaks in it if they still do such a thing?!
Im yet to see if anyone on orange UK has the same issues?? (same bands as tmobile).

Radio advice/help needed!

So I recently got an Inspire, coming from a Vibrant. I have T-mobile service. On the Vibrant, in the same location, I had superb cell signal. On this Infuse, it's more than terrible.
I know it's designed to be an ATT phone, and the internal hardware won't pick up certain T-Mobile bands, but I have also had a couple other unlocked phones that got better signal than this.
I can literally set the Vibrant down on the table with 3-4 bars of service, and the Infuse next to it with Emergency Only or an X (no signal). In other random spots I can get a couple bars, but very spotty. Sometimes I'll have a couple of bars, and literally not move an inch and lose signal. That's frustrating!
I know I can't get 3g-4g speeds. Not an issue with me, I use wireless, but I do want to figure out how to make and receive phone calls.
I unlocked using Ace, and let it run for a few days before making any other changes. Today I flashed Android Revolution HD 6.3.3, and then flashed the recommended radio about an hour later. (used the fastboot method described in the radio's readme, the RIL was included in the Rom)
So my signal is slightly better, but only barely. Still very unreliable.
I guess my hope is, to gain some insight as to how the radio even works, so I can start to learn the differences in them, and find one that works better.
Is there any hope that I will find one that is suitable?
Can anyone recommend radios/a solution?
I also wonder, since the Desire has compatible radios, and they are used in Europe, if they may pick up T-Mobile USA signals better.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your help and advice!
P.S. I know its been discussed before, however, I've read hours and hours worth of posts, and in the end I decided asking was definitely worth it. Ya'll are smart!
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA
Radios react differently for everyone cause they are actually based on regions as to where your at. But there are positive responses on the .03 , .28 and .30 radios. Give them a shot and try them out each for about a few days and see how they work for you. Development section has a radio thread you can get them from.
Just remember flash radios at your own risk, they are a little riskier than flashing roms. Good luck
