When I slide out the keyboard and type the lights go out on the keyboard within a second or two of a pause. Is there any way to make the lights stay on longer ??
I know your happy about your new wizard. But its enough with the questions.
Use the search function, like everyone elese.
About the keyboard let me say it is possible, do a search
Thanks for your kindness Weezy; I do not know about you but My job keeps me very busy, you know-job? Weezy? I have limited time to play here and I looked for a wile but thought that's what this forum was about- to ask for help. How do you know how much time I spent looking any way? It's possible I missed the answer to my question, then what-? Not everyone may have the time you have decided what is propper to search here first before asking questions. I hung out on Treo forums for 18 months and saw tons of others and myself ask many questions and never saw any one told to stop with the questions. I do not like you to much Weezy, you have taken a very fun experience for me and others in my office who are keeping up on this with me and have tryed to turn us all off about this forum and our new 8125's. Three of us bought them but only I am doing the research for us all. I could have all the others ask questions to, would that make you happy? Sorry to the others about being gruff but I thought we all had a common bond to share here. I'm not going to stop asking questions. I do not like being pushed around.
I own my business so I have to sit down and get on the computer when there aren't any customers I need to take care of.
And what your doing is breaking the FIRST rule of the forum. Let me make it faster for you, and paste it here for you.
1. Check if something hasn't been asked before
Some questions just keep popping up over and over. Please use the 'search' function in the menu above each and every page in the forum. Try entering a few keywords to see if your question has been asked before. If it has, please read the topics and see if you can figure it our from there.
(We acknowledge that part of the problem is that we never created a well-organized system of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) documents. But then we're doing lots of cutting-edge stuff, and we'd rather build cool tools than work on perfecting FAQs.)

Talk about waste of bandwidth, weezy you are a waste. I guess 41 posts make you the big man here. I sure hope you have no interests in this web site or I would never have donated money. You are clearly wrong and to rebut as you did instead of offering help shows your integrity and willingness to help. It seems you are trying to be big man on campus, maybe in hopes to get some ware. That is not the way to do it so grow up. So when it comes to me and my posts let those that I give my money to tell me what to do here not you. As we tell people at work that try to have a say ware they do not belong" you do not sign my pay check". So weezy mind your own business.
You can get tempermental huh. I been here before you heard of Windows Mobile. It just that I switched to Treo because I was dealing with Palms at the time. I was just like you and doubted the search button. I didnt post the first I signed up here. Hey, if I didn't tell you about the search button, so one else would.
Hope you get your keyboard working
Hint, its with include in your search keyword : registry
zac123- have you found fix for key light timing - have a refurb 8125 for month and have same issue - pain in neck on train to work at 5am - have many questions and find no answers, need to post when have more time - have done extensive search on this site and others and find no fix - attempts to call phone mfgr from number given to me from my service provider are waste of time, calls go to S.Africa and have constant disconnects - keep up good work with questions, they bring out the insane and every site needs a good laugh - ask many questions and do not let the insane bother you, just laugh - need to register with pay pal when have time, want to donate - please reply

HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
(This key only works on Wizard and Universal)
if you'd used the time to UTFS instead of flaming on weezy correcting your ignorance of forum ettiquete, you would have found the question had been asked dozens of times, but anyways, it won't work:
Change the keyboard backlight duration
To change the duration of the keyboard backlight, you can set (example is 30 seconds):
HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout = 30 (DWORD decimal)
Please note that this may not work on some devices. One such notable exception is the HTC Wizard.

I don't think it work on the 1.8 rom, what rom are you using? And Thank You Marcski
Weezy you are pretty smart, you new just ware to go with this. Zac123 should listen to you. I'm sorry about my post to zac123 about insane people. I wish i would have come back sooner to try your fix out. I been working on this for a month now, I will do it now. I alrady have PHM reg edit installed, this wll be easy. I chose New DWORD Value / value name I made QKeyLedTimeout and value I set to 30 and chose OK. Then it showes up under name as QKeyLedTimeout and under Data as 30(0x00001e) Unfortunately this did not fix the issue. i see that Marcski says it wont work, you guys are pretty smart. I guess it is time to give up. O well.... Maybe I will keep pestering cingular instead of you guys. Thanks any way weezy and Marcski.
Thanks, but I didn't find this registry edit. I remeber I used a cleaned rom, and it work, but I haven't applied the hack since I upgraded to the official 2.6 rom
I have a wizard with the 2.26 Molski ROM, but on earlier versions it didn't work either..
Thanks marcski, I made my self known at My service provider with this issue. We have a very large corporation that uses them so I have my corporate tek support rep checking for a firmware upgrade or something to fix this problem.I'm going to search here more now for a firmware upgrade, I read someware else there is an unofficial release of one. I hope I can find it, there is so much on this site and I have trouble with the search engine.
here's a hint to a good rom, its by molski.
Here's the link
http://www.molski.biz/
Or just go the Wizard Update forum, plenty of roms for the wizard and 8125. Search for mr clean rom to, its pretty.
I myself use the official t-mo rom 2.6
You can update the rom and do a hard reset, and when it get to the part where it say's "install customization" press the reset button on the side, and it won't install those ugly carrier customization

It's been a wile since my last post but i want to have some info so I could contribute something to this web site. I have researched extensively the keyboard light timing issue with the 8125 and I do not have good news. I have some phone numbers here that any one may use to call and check on there own about the info I am posting. I was on the phone for 65 minuts with a few different tech support agents wile they tested there own 8125's and researched the issue. They all said the light timing is controlled by a capassitor that once fired has a discharge rate of it's own that can no be controled by any firmware upgrade or registery entry. They said this then is a hardware issue therefore it ca not be addressed. These are the phone numbers; 713-774-7888 is for the main offices and 877-878-6944 was for opperational questions and 888-354-2375 was for repair and technical support. The last # was ware I got all this info today. So now I am going to put this issue to rest and just get used to the phone the way it is. I have been customizing it with different software, such as Handy Switcher- PocketPC Batter Monitor- Phm Registery Editor- IM-Pluss- SPB-Backup and WiFiFOFum wi-fi sniffer. I find all these programs very helpful, some I have already purchased and some I am waiting for another pay day. My next two projects are to find out why the first Hot Sync never works and comes up with an error making me unplug the phone and start over, then it syncs up fine. Then I need to find some king of Java application to install that will allow me to watch my live traffic cams like I did on my Treo 650. This has all been fun work so far.
i just bought my tilt, just flashed to dutty v3 room and now i get a weird text every 4 mins. the number is 111145643 and it says wvi1 1.1 1111. is there anyway i can stop that text?
thanks!
Hmm I think you should call your carrier. Unless your phone is somehow sending itself a message, the kaiser probably isn't the culprit.
did you have express mail setup? if so you have to reinstall it on the phone then log onto the express mail server and delete the connection that you made for push e-mail or turn off push, then uninstall express mail on the phone and reset. you should be OK
^^I stand corrected!
I think that is for the IM+ program that ATT provides on their roms for im. The company is called wireless village i believe. I was bugged by it for a while, well the full hour I had my device before I flashed schaps!
I use Palringo until trillian gets a clue about wireless devices. It can sync with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk, and others.
BTW, It uses data instead of sms to send messages like the IM+ does.
i had the same question but alltheway awnsered it for me already... its kind of a side effect of flashing sometimes. it will go away on its own. i think i got it like 8 times and havent had it since.

its not necessarily a side affect of flashing, it can go away if you reinstall the app that was on the old rom that is causing it... its something that was installed on your previous rom that used silent sms to alert the program to perform a specific function. LIke PTT, expressmail, or the cing/att IM client (to tired to remember the name)... When these programs are running your phone will recieve a ghost message that is only read by the app to wake it up. Alot of these problems were seen in the hermes thread and PTT.
Nope....That is what you get when someone tries to PTT you. Without PTT you get an SMS message. The way PTT works is basically Voice MMS messaging with a trigger to open & close the voice connection (PTT Button) Those digits you see are altered SMS addresses, they are altered so that PTT can recognize them & shift it from SMS to PTT.
Agin, whenever you kill PTT, you lose the ability to decipher the modified address & hence, it's received as a MMS instead. The reason you keep getting it is because the request that was sent retries a certain number of times before failing.
why dont you ask that question in the correct thread....the one that deals with your rom??

Well, that would make Dutty's never ending post even longer. We should save that post for other problems directly regarding the rom, and comments on new updates.
Beside, I believe the problem has nothing to do with Dutty's V3, it work flawlessly for me.
I am just so tired of more or less stupid questions that constantly are repeated because newies does not take their time and READ before starting threads and asking questions. This has to stay in the DUTTY thread - my opinion.
We shouldnt end up in a new HERMES forum with all the noise and bad mouth it had last year
I do not have anything against stupid questions in general - just do some searching and reading first..
So welcome all - lets use SEARCH some more..

Wow man take a breath! Your gonna get an ulcer.
to his defense i havn't seen this question in dutty's thread at all. and i've only seen it once but not onthe kairser forums. so cut him a lil slack. plus we all learn something from it...ptt or express mail can cause this. thats sure something i didnt know. hope all is well now...enjoy your device sir.
This question was answered on the hermes forum. That is how I solved my issue. I still believe it deals with the IM app from att that uses wireless village. Ill try to find some links to help get it solved.
I couldnt find the thread in the hermes section that described the issue. It might be from OZ messanger and not IM+. It is the version that comes preinstalled from the ATT rom. It is designed to use sms to im therefore making ATT more money.
I had the same text messages when I first got the Kaiser and ran the im software. I believe my test message had a different set of numbers at the end.
Here is a link to Wireless Village. They are a group that is promoting interoperability between handsets for a variety of functions (IM included).
http://www.openmobilealliance.org/tech/affiliates/wv/wvindex.html
EDIT:
I found this article from the cingular...er...ATT forums. This is the issue I originally had and the same text from the same number. The issue below is because OZ messenger was closed and not properly exited.
http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=samsung&message.id=16362
I spent all day yesterday figuring this out. I downloaded and install the .cab file to my storage card and then logged into the IM program (OZ). After signing out, it kept me logged into all 3 services (Yahoo, AIM, and MSN) and then I proceeded to receive 40+ text (SMS) messages b/c it was trying to "reach me". After sitting on the phone for about an hour and half with a great Data Service Tech Rep, we figured it out and now the IM program works just fine.

I'm getting the message from 1111470400 and all it says is WVCI 1.1 333.

You know - Generally I don't get into these types of little spit / spat arguments - but today you have caught me at the perfect time.
Martinhdk - you are the type of person that makes dealing with the public so hard. You complain about things that aren't even worth complaining about. Sure - it was Dutty's ROM, but in essence had absolutely nothing to do with the ROM, it's probably the push to talk causing the issue. (Because I have the same issue) You had to try and prove yourself by spouting off and telling someone how to run things, when really, you were in the wrong.
Sometimes people get anxious and maybe don't do as much searching as they possibly should. Big DEAL - you are in a forum and since forums began it has been a problem. Does this require that you lay into the guy and tell him how stupid his question is? NO, it doesn't. You must be one very unhappy individual who probably lives a very lonely life - do us all a favor, in the future; keep your comments to yourself and let the moderators do their job.
I apologize to XDA - I know this thread / forum is not used for this. I just feel that sometimes these guys who insult someone younger / or maybe just not as experienced have a tendency to scare these guys away and I don't feel that is right.
i had the same exprience , its not the problem with your carrier , its the ATT IM+ app , if you exit the app w/o logging out of messenger app you keep getting this wierd msg , i tried unintsallng the app but no luck , finally i relashed a new rom and the error went away.
SOLUTION
What you do is you sign in to AIM at a desktop computer, the screenname you signed in on your phone. than a message will pop up saying you are signed in at two places and if you reply to that window with "1" it will sign you out at the other location, your phone. that should stop the messages.
the AIM service on your phone used txt msgs and when you close the program without first signing out. it usually causes that problem.
Stealth message?
I've heard of this so called "stealth" text message used by the carriers to send commands to the phone. My next question is - is it possible to send one of these so called "Stealth" messages from a phone to anther phone - with the proper instructions encoded in the text msg to automatically appear either on the users screen or in their inbox? I have heard this is possible but am very interested if someone could provide me a little more insight on it....
It's possible, it's been done. Would you like to know how? How do you want to send the malicious code? BT? WIFI? MMS? Maybe I can get you my bank account number & ssn while I'm at it?
There are other forums for that type of stuff, some proggies to do this are actually security auditing tools. Most all means though require the user to acknowledge receipt of whatever you send & then require them to execute it. However, I sincerely doubt that anyone here is going to give you any means to do something that may harm someone's device. Sure, you just want to play a prank, but how about the guy you then teach it to?
I have had a Tilt on the at&t network since it came out and I love it. A gentleman came into my store a while back with a Tilt and had the Touch Flo Cube running on his Tilt. He told me to come to this website and that someone on here would be able to help me do the necassary upgrades. His phone also ran streaming videos off of youtube and other websites. I am very very interested in both of these applications and really would like to get them running on my Tilt safely. The only problem is that I am a complete phone upgrading Virgin and everywhere I seem to look there are warnings to not install software unless I know what I am doing. I am scared to do these updates by myself because A, I have never done them before, and B I have already broken one Tilt due to dropping it in the snow five days ago. I really don't want to have to replace another one if this goes wrong.
If someone could please take the time out of their day to help me with these upgrades, then I would be eternaly grateful! You can PM me to set up a time and or a way for us to easily communicate if you would like to do so. To anyone that does, I want to thank you in advance for your time and for your concern.
Thanks guys(and girls)
Jeremiah
Very easy to do those.
First back up all your data.
Second CID unlock your phone so you can flash any roms you want.(caution-CID unlock might lock your phone if it's sim unlocked)
Third choose the rom you want. There are lots of great roms and great chefs. You just have to flashed them see which roms and cook is compatible for you.
Fourth just restore back all your data.
Hope this helps. Everything is in wiki and stickies. Just spend some times before you mess up with your rom since if something goes wrong, you will brick your phone.
I can tell you that the very first thing you will be told by everyone here is read. Read the Wiki on this site for the Kaiser. Read the sticky threads in this forum. Read the threads on the apps and ROMs you want to install when you decide which ones you want. You want to probably spend at least three or four days...preferably a week or more...just gathering knowledge. If you take a little time and figure out what you want and read up on how to do it and what kind of problems you are likely to run into and how to fix them....well....upgrading is a simple thing.
Until the end of October, I had never done this either. But I read the site for about three weeks after getting my Tilt. At the end of that time I decided to take the plunge. I haven't hit a single snag that I couldn't easily and quickly fix. Why? I read a lot and by the time I got ready the vast majority of problems had been found and fixed.
So my advice is take some time and read about all the things you need to know: HardSPL, any sticky with Tilt or AT&T in the title, Radios (because any non-AT&T ROM needs a different radio**), Kaiser Wiki, and threads on the ROM you want and apps you want to install.
**Note: asking why you have no sound in ANY thread after flashing your Tilt will most likely result in scathing responses as it has been asked and answered about 2309478320984731209184837 times already.
You have to spend some time reading all the stickies, threads at the top of this page learning about how to do this stuff. It doesn't take long and it's pretty basic as people have written instructions very clearly on how to do these things, just for the simple fact that you don't need to be PM'ed on how to do this stuff, you just read.
I think you made this almost exact post in the modify/upgrading/unlocking section and received some responses.
But no, cube navigation does not give you iphone effect in web pages.
You need to search/google things such as Ftouchflo config, kona's cube, etc etc. Have to read all this stuff as you will then be able to absorb all of this information for when things come up that you need to fix/change.
Oh and I don't think he really needs to flash his rom if all he want's is cube navigation. Should just need to install ftouchflo config and a kona cube .cab
Thanks guys.
I did post a similar thread in the Upgrading section and they told me to post my thread here, so that is why I did it.
The main thing I am looking to do is to be able to run videos off youtube and various other sites. Does my Tilt need to be unlocked in order to do that? My Sim Card is not unlocked, so this should not hurt anything when unlocking the phone correct?
If you are using your data connection to browse the internet and want to look at videos, i hope you have a data plan that can handle it or have some sort of media package with at&t that i dont know much about.
If you just want to watch videos on a wireless home or work lan connection, then I think there should just be htc streaming media player on your device.. i don't know why it wouldn't be included. Maybe it's in this list of cabs
Or you can search/google "tcpmp and flashbundle" and install those. It is a media player.
But again, just search/browse. All questions have been asked before and answered, so it's best to look for them yourself so you gain a broader range of how things work, trust me, makes it a lot easier.

and no i dont think the lock status of your phone has anything to do with surfing the web and watching a video off of youtube through the core pocket media player and flash bundle.
Yes, I do have a Data Plan on my Tilt. I do know a little bit about phones I work for at&t so I should. They just don't teach us how to unlock devices and install 3rd party softwares onto the devices.
I will look through the lists and see what I can find. Thanks again.
Hi Everyone,
Ive been on a bit of a mission with T-mobile and have been in touch with the directors office, they are under the impression that nothing has been locked down on the phone in rc7/rc30 that would limit the use of the phone from a development standpoint.
Ive given them a few examples of things that cant be done but they refuse to do anything (other than cancel my contact if i want) as im only one person who is complaining.
I know everyone runnning rc30v1.2 and rc8v.12 is ok atm, but could EVERONE please send a little email of complaint. Just explaining that you are unhappy that they have locked down the phone and denied us root.
cl&[email protected]
They say that if they get more complaints then something will be done
ITS WORTH A SHOT ISNT IT?
PS... If anyone wants to cancel their contract in the uk because of the lack of access, call 01707 315000 and ask to talk to Leah within the Directors team about your G1 problem. I explained that i couldnt get my apps working because i couldnt edit/add files to system directories.
They should offer to cancel it, it worked for me
Yeah, it's worth a shot, although from past experience with T-Mobile this may be akin to trying to extract blood from a stone
I tried doing the same thing after I got my G1 (before anyone figured out the hole in RC29). I found the people over at T-Mobile USA are just as clueless. As soon as you mention the words Android or G1, they instantly transfer you to a different support queue. I tried to explain what root access was and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about.
I found that here in the UK also, these people work in the directors team and so far have not fobbed me off.
They dont claim to be technical but are at least talking to the T-mobile developers about this. They have raised my concerns with the UK G1 manager, i think my case just needs a little more oomph from others complaining.
I've already called HTC, G1 support, and the PDA/Smartphone support ppl. None of them were willing to even try to understand the issue.
T-mobile have just called me and have advised that we should expect a statement about the issue by the end of the week. The issue is now with board members apparently
Maybee they are actuclly starting to understand??
You should have them email. At least that way it leaves a paper trail.

That's very interesting that T-Mobile is even considering the idea of allowing root access, to the point where it would be an executive decision by the board members. Do you have any other information on this aside from your first post? Can anyone else confirm this?
i phoned tmobile uk today and asked why i couldnt get root on my tc5-rc8.
and i had a long talk with the guy and he said he had a email about this issue
and went throught a few things with me on my phone. and then he said he would phone me back tomorrow with someone that new more about the g1 then the tec support staff. and he would be able to give me more answers about it.
qtronix
Cool
Sounds like my insessant *****ing at T-mobile support might have gotten us somewhere?
At least techies are not fobbing people off at the moment.
Could you please concider sending an email to the address i posted, just so they are aware that others are miffed.
******This is a copy of the email i sent to the directors team******
Leah
Many thanks for your call....
As t-mobile dont seem to see/understand the problem I have given the contact details of the director team to a group of developers so that you can hopefully get a few more calls about this. Please believe me that I am not the only person who has these concerns, but when people call tech support about this they are simply fobbed off by people who are not trained/do not understand the issue.
I would like to point out an error with t-mobiles response that they have in no way locked down the phone so that it is detremental for putting developed software onto the phone.
Please see a few examples of how the new RC8 Software limits Developers :-
1. Say I wanted my screen to automatically rotate without wanting to open the keyboard, this is simply a matter of editing offset: 1104724 within /system/framework/framework.odex to 0x0F001246.
I could do this on the old software but not on the new RC8
2. Say i wanted to update the web browser to do the same, this would mean editing the origional browser source code released by Google and putting it on my phone. Again, this was possible with root access on RC7 but has now been made impossible on the new RC8.
3. Say i wanted to make a tethering application that allows me to use my G1 as a modem to my PC (i know this would cost me money on my contract for data transfer) but I might want to do it so that i can connect to my workplace vpn to fix something. This was Doable on RC7, but now is not.
4. The G1 currently has no way of clearing cache for the marketplace, this again was doable on RC7 but not on RC8
5. The G1 has a limited ammount of space to install applications. It would be a good idea if we could install applications to our SD memory Cards, but again we cant do this because of the new software.
The above examples are just some simple things developers are working on that would benefit the phone, but we cant develop them and put them on the phone.
Basically anything that means editing a system file / writing a file to a system directory is now impossible.
Please understand that developers are not trying to take over the world or ruin the phone. We are simply trying to make the phone do what we want / improve the features.
This is how OpenSource works. Everyone has access to the Source code so that it can if neccecary be customised/edited to improve things for everyone.
The new software has made it impossible for programs that interact with the main system files or require extra files to be put in a system folder, to work.
Developers understand why the phone RC7 software was unsafe in the way it ran commands, we understand why you fixed the command running problem, but instead of fixing the issue properly you have just locked down root access?? Why??
If the new software in no way limits what developers can do, then why when you search on the net are so many people “Jailbreaking” their phones to get the access they require.

Can i draw your attention to
"In contrast, the G1 has been developed by the Open Handset Alliance project. It's extremely unlikely that this alliance, which is committed to an open platform, will engage in the same kinds of protective shenanigans that Apple has resorted to. The Android philosophy states that "anyone can contribute to Android and influence its direction. That means that anyone can download, build, and run the code needed to create a complete mobile device."
So why jailbreak an already-open device? One big jailbreak advantage is that it allows you to bypass the G1's internal storage. Until now, you were limited by the G1's built-in memory for installing and running programs. With the jailbreak, you can install applications onto a local SD card and run them from the card. Running low on memory? Just swap cards in and out.
Jailbreaking also allows you to use low-level tools that run in the background. Want your G1 to call home and report your location every 20 minutes? A simple Unix process, called a daemon, can handle that for you. You can set daemons up to remind you of appointments, to scan for nearby wireless devices and more. The world of handheld computing doesn't begin or end with graphic interfaces. There's an enormously rich world of possibilities available through command line processes.
Most importantly, jailbreaking gives you complete control of your system from the bottom up. It lets you stop thinking of your phone as a handheld gadget and start using it as a fully-capable Unix platform. "
Please could you explain how T-mobile are of the opinion that they have not limited developers with the above examples in mind.
The G1 is being sold as a Developer friendly OpenSource Phone. How can you claim this is developer friendly when the software severely limits what developers can do?
Are T-mobile saying that the phone was never supposed to allow users this access and that the RC7 root access was a mistake?
Eagerly Awaiting your response..

Well written, although I would have DEFINITELY left out the part about tethering the phone.

I did think about that, but then i reconcidered as we already have tetherbot which works without root.
Suppose we will just have to see if anything comes of it

you can always call t-mobile and say that after you updated the phone it is now:
constantly feezing, apps are running slow, and at times you can not connect to internet.
also tell them that you tried a factory reset and it did not help (make up a story that you have friend that has a lot of app and his phone runs faster than you phone with no apps installed)
if you have insurance they will send you one for free, you just have to return your old phone,
i believe they are still sending out rc29 for replacements as of now.
friend and cousin tried it and it worked.
might be worth a shot
Just got this in my inbox:
"Thank you for letting us know of your concerns with the 'open source' and 'root access' on your G1 mobile phone. We really do appreciate your comments about this.
We're aware that there are concerns in relation to this and our leadership teams in the UK and the USA are currently reviewing your comments and our position. We plan to provide you and other customers with similar concerns, with a response early next week, which should answer your concerns. I'll be in touch with you then.
Your comments are extremely valuable to us Mr * and I'm grateful for your patience while we look into this. I'd like to thank you personally for your co-operation.
In the mean time I hope you enjoy your weekend.
Kind regards
Leah Young
Directors' Office Co-ordinator
T-Mobile (UK)"
Of course, their answer could be anything from "f*ck off" to "yes, we'd love to embrace the openness of android with both arms, here everyone, have root!" so we'll all have to keep our fingers crossed 'til monday.
Well I just hope they release an update with options that allow us to turn off all background services (myfaves) and unwanted datatraffic (or actuall prevent overriding options when roaming).
How did that dead horse like the beating?
Perhaps a dead horse. Could it be that Tmo has now figured out that with root access, it won't take long for people like the coders at XDA to fully jailbreak the device to the point that voIP will be easy for any user to obtain? Are they just trying to protect their ability to profit off of voice traffic?

Hummm... I think ALL wireless providers are threatened by VOIP but the main reason root access was blocked was due to bad press mainly by tons of articles stating that there is a huge security risk and a flaw was found with Android which could let remote users attack someone's device...blah blah blah and so forth. That pretty much scared T-Mobile and Google which hated to have bad press so close to the G1 just being released and were forced to correct this issue. The only problem with that protection came with closing alot of freedom for the G1 and may happen to alot of more Android-based devices in the future, I'm afraid... Maybe Google will realize that there are other ways to protect mobile hijacking (which is extremely rare anyways) by creating some type of built-in firewall software instead?

Root is not necessary to build a voip app. Fact is, G1 launched with a skype-compatible voip app called iSkoot. Look it up.

Developers at XDA.
I’m sure many of you have heard of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Over the past week I’ve become involved and have determined that there is a need that could most efficiently be met through technology and since I know little of developing I’m looking for some assistance.
Here is the problem:
Protesters are not allowed to communicate with a PA system. This means that when we try to organize we need to scream everything out to each other and pass the message along. As you can image, in the game of telephone things get distorted and misunderstood. We need some way to relay messages to anyone who needs it quickly.
Solution:
I believe that an app would be the best way to facilitate this. While there could be updates online, that’s slow and requires people who want to post something online to go to the blog. It also means that we would have to constantly check. It also means that someone would have to type long messages in through a touch screen. Not efficient.
My Idea is for the app comes from seeing the app Coco voice for the iphone. It’s a service where you can speak into your phone and like a text message it sends that vocal message to said recipient. Now if you took that same kind of recording idea, and instead of sending it directly to a phone number, uploaded it to a main server and people subscribed to that specific “group” (or what have you) would receive a push notification about a new message. Then everyone would be able to get important information about what’s happening, what we’re doing. And especially where to avoid clashes with police. A text element for quick messages would also be great.
What’s in it for you:
1) You’d be helping a movement that hopefully you believe in.
2) The use of this application could go far beyond just this movement. It’s sort of vocal tweeting phone to phone. Subscribe to a group and be informed. People could record a cut of a song and send it directly or just say hello to all your loved ones at once while on vacation. This is a legitimate idea that has widespread application.
3) This will quickly become one of the more downloaded apps. There were 15-20,000 people at the NYC protest last night. The protests are also sprouting up in over 10 different cities across the US. Then there will be people that just want to know what happening. An immediate wide audience to launch the application and gain publicity.
4) You will get mad props
Is there anyone out there who is willing to put in some time in helping to develop an application to help facilitate communication among protesters? This would have to be a free app at least until the protests are over. Preferably it would be both iOs and android compatible. Please let me know so we can talk through some ideas, specifics, timelines, and what not.
Also let me know if you think this is possible or not. Or if you have any other good ideas. Let’s get this moving.
ps - let's try to keep this from getting political. We do not need to argue about the protest here. If you are interested great help out, if not then just move on to the next thread. Thanks in advance.
LoL. Really? What are you end goals? What do you want changed? Who makes the rules?

I think that would work as well. Definitely open to suggestions that might make this easier for developers. Ant interest?

I would love to talk to you about this, but this is not the right place for that discussion. Pm me if you actually have interest, I have real answers. I just know this forum was not made for this purpose so I won't do it here.
It would be very honorable for some Devs to spend a little bit of time on this. I could see this app on headlines. Would be a good way for some Dev to get exposure too.
