Low free storange space - Need advice please - General Topics

Hello,
my Smartphone (Qtek 8300) keeps prompting me:
Alert
Your phone is running low on free storage space. Delete old or unused items to create more space.
In Resco Explorer "Storage" is shown at 97%.
May I assume that the reason for this is mainly that too many applications (I have installed a lot of them) kept installing files in folder "Application Data" ?
If so:
What can I do in order to prevent programs from writing to this folder ?
(Remark: I have installed all my application on the storage card. But even though many of them write onto ApplicationData folder.)
Can I appy some settings in the registry changing this folder to \Storage Card\Application Data ?
Would that be safe to apply or will I risk to lose data or functionality ?
What is the best recommendation ?
How can I find a solution to this problem ?
Asking for advice, please !!!

Map Hidden Storage 16 MB O2 Xda ATOM!!!
"O2 Xda Atom" the tiny model that stand in the heart of PocketPCPhone users. It has big storage Storage, but there is another 16 Mb hidden storage. I'll tell you to to make use of it.
......
O2 Atom has the storages as the following:
Program Storage (Root) = 22.11 MB
Storage Folder = 43.86 MB
Memory Card = it's MiniSD.
They are big enough to install the some programs. But actually there are hidden storage called "Hidden Partition" 15.55 MB. The main purpose of this storage is to keep AutoConfig , ClipArt , Skins , etc.
How to get inside "HiddenPartition"
We need tools name GSFinder+ .
1. Install GSFinder+ to Atom then open it up.
2. at Address bar at the top input as \_QHiddenPartition then tap Enter at keybaord.
Browsing around, you'll see many folder and files. I suggest to make a backup by copy all files to MiniSD, just for safety.
Those are data that used for Camera and AutoConfig.
In case you delelete them, some program may malfunction such as Camera and Autoconfig
By the way, if you don't use those program you can delete them.
Well we'll make use of it by Mapping as Storage. So that we can use that space.
How to map Hidden Partion to Folder
1. Download PDAMobiz_AtomShowHiddenStorage.zip unzip and copy to Atom.
2. Tap at file name to install at Atom.
3. Soft Reset
4. That's it
You'll see Hidden Storage was newly added. (Memory Card is mine miniSD 512 MB). Now you can use usual file explorer to see new folder.
For anyone who love to challenge new things, but I did not make the program to restore as previous condition, just hard reset to restore it back.
Good luck

Interesting. I wonder if it uses Buzz technique for exposing the Extended ROM to the filing system as a storage device.

Installing to Storage Card, Device getting full!

I always install to my storage card but it seems that no matter what i do, my device memory keeps filling up! I ran critically low to 785 KB on a HTC Kaiser. i noticed that the programs put things in /Program Files on my device and on /Storage Card/Program Files
Questions!
In the memory app located in settings it says under the main tab that there is "Storage" and "Program". My "Storage" keeps getting full while my "program" has 39.31 MB free. What is the difference?
Can I simply place all the /program files folders over to my /storage card/program files folder and fix shortcuts or does the programs require to take space on my device itself?
I have NO pictures or videos saved on my device, only storage card, and save all attachments/etc to my storage card aswell. I have reflashed and ran memmaid and no use...
I have tried copying the program files folder over to my storage card. Have 40MB free now but all sorts of broken shortcuts. I have turned off "Shortcut To" in windows via a registry key but when I create shortcuts on the device the pesky "Shortcut to" is still showing. I have decided to flash to the lastest rom and let SAMACHI handle my cab installs...
Other Ideas:
Emails:
I sync my Hermes with a huge Outlook personal folder with lots of emails, tasks and notes. By default, email "bodies" are stored as binary files (*.mpb) in the \Windows\Messaging folder (may vary?). This folder can grow in size up to 10 - 15 MB depending on the number of emails. So in my case it wasn't enough to move the attachments to the Storage Card, I also had to move the emails "bodies" to the Storage Card. You can do this by moving the folder to the Storage Card AND changing the registry as explained in the WIKI (Change the location of email and attachments) to point the new folder location. BUT PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF EMAILS AND ATTACHMENTS IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS. Windows stores email headers separate from email "bodies" so if you move the "bodies" and the registry points to the wrong location, you might get empty emails and loose all data permanently if you sync. BE CAREFUL...Opera 9.5:
If you use Opera 9.5, you will loose another 10 - 12 MB in the \Application Data\Opera9 folder (may vary depending on opera version). In that case is better to run Opera from the Storage Card and tweak it so that its cache is also in the card.Themes:
Some custom made themes are in the 100 - 500 KB range and if you have many themes in the \Windows folder it can take a couple of megs of storage space. I moved all my themes to the card and keep only the one I use in the \Windows folder.
You could add more system memory by using a rom that has Ramdisk in it. In case you are not familiar, Ramdisk is a feature that basically uses Program memory as storage memory. It is similar to wm2003 and earlier, with the difference that you cannot manually allocate it. It has to be a hex edit in the rom itself. Now, regarding your question... program memory refers to the ram that is allocated for program use (as its name specifies). Basically, the more programs you have running, the lower this number gets. This is the memory resource of your device. Storage memory acts as your "hard drive", where you will place all your stuff (installation programs, pics, etc) provided that you do not send it to your storage card.
A lot of programs will install to device memory whether you instruct them to go in memory or not. Now, it should be perfectly possible to put the programs in the card as long as you rework the shortcuts...
I don't know which GPS program you are using (if any). But if you are, make sure that it is not downloading data into your device directly (things like maps, POIs, etc).
Try the first part of my post though. That might help you some.
Good luck!

Click to collapse
I wouldn't recommend doing so though, you want all the ram you can get.... less ram equals less speed. If you have other space (such as your storage card) then use that.
I reccomend one of garmins rom, they usually come loaded with extra space (dk4 comes with like 110mb)
Certain programs have to be installed to the main memory, but if you install to the storage card.... you should only lose a couple kb to shortcuts and such...... something isn't adding up.
PS: The difference between storage and program:
Storage= Hard drive memory
Program= RAM memory
PSS: There is a program called clear temp you may want to try, it gets rid of alot of you temp files for you.
After flashing my device and reinstalling everything to the storage card, I have came to the conclusion that some programs install to the device anyway even if you select Install to Storage Card. I went from 110MB free down to 78mb, all in the program files folder! Time to be moving these and fixing shortcuts!

Out of main memory....help please

Although I have all photos, music, apps etc pointed to 'external' memory I am now getting low memory (<2MB) warnings. I have manaully purged (as much as I feel confident with) main memory and even uninstalled and re-installed programs to ensure that they reside in external memory. However when I search for files >64KB there are no files reported in main. This is driving me crazy and I need help before I microwave my HTC Diamond. Please, please point me in the right direction
The messages are probably not for storage memory but for either RAM or virtual memory. Close applications instead of minimizing them (the usual default). Get a task manager and see what's going on.
I hoped that that was the case however I have a RAM cleaner tool and even after running that and killing all processes I still have low memory. Is there any way I can determine what is taking up main memory?
you know one of my friends has the same problem with his samsung omni and i can't for the life of me find what is taking up so much room. he is pretty back to stock and we have tried everything. i tell him to return his phone as defective but he hasn't. is this a winmo problem that could be a bad code or is it just dumb luck that this has happened to an htc and samsung?
Calendar items, phone logs, messages reside in main memory too -- have you cleared those?
I do use the calendar and maybe clearing some of the old entries will help. However I do not use the handset as a voice phone, only data, and have no call logs or texts taking up space. I do use it for email so will check that too. That said it's currently using 83.36MB out of 84.56MB and doubt if the odd deletions will make a great difference. Is there a way of partitioning some of the storage card space over to extend the main storage area?
You can relocate \My Documents pretty easily with a registry change. You can also move your PIE cache (sk tools will help with this). These things might help. I thought the diamond had 4G of internal memory? Does it have a small main memory and then a large internal storage memory? I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with it.
You may want to install ClearTemp or something similar to clean out your temp and volatile folders. And you're sure it's not a ram issue? Do you have the problem immediately after a soft reset, or does it take a while?
I may have been leading you down the garden path. When I run the memory app' in Settings there are two totals: Storage and Program. In storage 82.7MB out of 84.5MB is in use and in program 78MB out of 111MB is in use. The Diamond complains of being almost out of memory shortly after it is turned on. Without a guide to follow I'm a little ill at ease attempting registry changes even though I have advanced config and PHM RegEdit installed. I will try ClearTemp if I can install it! Thanks for the help to date.
Does anyone know how to clear out the 'storage' area of the HTC as Opera is now refusing to run (not enough cache space...?) I'm facing the prospect of reloading the firmware (again) with no confidence I won't be back in this situation again in a couple of months
The out-of-memory warning message is activated after the ram memory is lower than a desired value .
The activation pattern and the threshold value are controlled by a set of registry entries under \HKCU\Software\Htc\TaskManager\
Can Play With It By Changing The Threshold Value In Registry.
Thanks for that, however at < 1-2MB of storage area remaining my problem is how do I recover storage capacity? I used ClearTemp and I now have around 7MB free which is much better though not ideal. Surely there must be a way of tweaking the storage / program balance through one of the toolkits?
I had the same prob few month back. The best way is to Hard reset > reinstall programs your REALLY NEED to internal storage except .net C Framework or Smart Protect etc... [install those types of programs to main memory]
The other way is
Buy SkTools if you dont have it
move things ie. programs to internal storage!
I select internal memory every time I install an app which further mystifies me. Now I can't get Opera to run.... it's just a year of break downs for me

[APP] Open space your internal with APPS2ROM -root needed-

Hi Chacha's,
When i was searching internal memory solutions, i found an application called APPS2ROM
You can move applications to ROM Memory with this app in your rooted device. It means extra ~100MB.
But i have no idea about maybe it'll be harmful for you device stability.
Need to try
I'm trying it and waiting your feedbacks.
PS: Not moving apps that moved to SD via APP2SD. Only working on installed in internal memory.
I could not give url, but you can find it in Google Play.
its been a week now.any feedbacks on how safe it is? and i have a quick question. i read on some thread, where alex said that removing some apps from the stock rom (unused apps and widgets) doesn't give space.so why remove then? what can that be used for? (the removing of those apps/widgets) i was able gain around 10mb by removing many unused apps/widgets but then space drops down rapidly. in the recovery menu, i could partition my memory card, what is that used for? any feedbacks could help. thanks.
I uses this program to move apps to the system storage and it works fine. However you have to repeat the process from time to time if you update your software that you moved to the system memory.

Storage pb for HTC Chacha

Good Evening Everyone !
You may have already seen this subject many times but I really need help as I can't find a way to fix my very particular situation.
Actually, HTC Chacha is a very particular smarthpone as it contains only 150 Mo Internal (/data).
I have also a 2gb sdcard which is composed of 1,3Gb truly external (for photos and my documents, this partition comes unavailable when I plug my smartphone to my computer for instance) and the other part is sdext2 which remains mounted inside the smartphone at any time.
Even though internal storage is reduced, I managed to set-up many application thanks to Linked2SD which helps me move apk and dex toward my 2nd partition (sdext2). However, as you must know, an app is composed of apk, dex and data. This last part is still stored in the internal memory (150 mo) (Link2SD does'nt link the data of the application but only the application itself).
How can I move those data to my external sdcard ?
Second question, is it possible to do this with data from the application contacts (in this particular case, data = my contacts database) which apk and dex haven't been linked by Link2SD. I would like to "get rid" of my contacts because 30 Mo of database makes my smartphone run out of internal storage (you can laugh, but the OS (Sense) doens't like this at all !!!).
I thought about FolderMount to move data stored in data/data to a folder on my sdcard but I don't how to do ?
Do I need first to move manually the data of the application (stored in /data/data) to my sdcard and then create a link ?
The source will be the folder in sdcard that I've just moved and the destination would be its former location ?
I hope I have been clear. Ask me if I haven't.
Thank you so much for you help !
