Black 128mb Bigstorage Upgrade Ok? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Just wondering if anyone has successfully upgraded their 128mb version of the imate jam with bigstorage? I have both a 64mb which I have bigstorage on and a 128mb that I do not and would like to try. Is it ok to do so?

It would do no harm to try but first make a full backup using Sprite and make sure you have or can download somewhere a copy of your current ROM.

Well after another successful attempt at bigstorage (Thanks to all the excellent info on this site) I now have an imate jam with 100mb free main memory and 26mb free storage memory. Very Cool.

which rom did u use?

(oops,missed details of question,sorry)

Tips about rom upgrade! (IMPORTANT for DUMMIES like me)

I upgraded from a T-mobile Eng rom to a Chinese rom days ago. It took me about 4 days to fully understand and fully accomplish this task. There are tips I feel that I should share it with other rom upgrade dummies. You may be able to find out the solutions to the problems you encounter.
1, there are 2 ways to upgrade rom, namely, SD card way and non-SD card way. As the non-SD card way involves the changing country code issue, I chose to use the SD card way. BTW, the rom upgrade method in the sticky thread is the non-SD card way.
2, the ntrw.exe file in the upgrade folder in the FTP server does not function for me. I am using Windows XP sp2 and usb 2.0 SD card reader, which might be the reason to cause the incompatibility. Solution is easy: use the ntrw 2.0 version, which can be downloaded from the FTP as well.
3, if you don't know how to replace the first 416 bytes MANNUALLY, use the bytecopy tool. You will find the tool from the FTP.
4, the two CHS (chinese simplified) rom in the bigstorage folder in the FTP don't work for me. The only one that works is the O2 mini CHS rom in the "dumped rom" folder on the FTP, but this rom is not bigstorage. Therefore, we need to mannually create a bigstorage rom. Follow the instruction here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=23250
5, CAUTION: the SD-card upgrade method DOES have the possibility to destroy the SD card. My 1 gb sandisk SD card cannot be used anymore after I tried the rom upgrade 3 times.
6, don't worry about the rom size that you dump from your magician. The rom size vary from the size of the SD card you use to dump the rom. When I used a 256 MB SD card, the dumped rom size is 25x MB. When I used a 1 gb SD card (the destroyed one -.-), the dumped rom size is 9xx MB.
If you have any other questions about rom upgrade, let me know. I may be able to help from what I learn in my dummy upgrade experience.
Cheers
My first exercise on ROM flashing
Dear Zenkle,
I am using WWE O2 mini. I have (kind-of) successfully done my first try on upgrading ROM as well. My final destiny is to upgrade to CHT BigStorage.
My first exercise was to get BigStorage on existing WWE ROM. It works on the memory side, but I lost all the O2 customization. I got a default WM2003SE. Can't use GPRS now. Do you have any ideal on how to put O2 customization back? I am currently restoring back to the original version.
I downloaded a CHT shipped ROM (CHT_11106_902_11100.zip) from XDA-Developer FTP. There isn't any nb1 file, but a couple of nbf files instead. Do you have any ideal how to flash this to the ROM?
Thanks for helping me up!
Douglas
To get your o2 mini ext rom back, you need to look for the o2 mini dumped rom. However, the rom available on the FTP is the mini 1.03, but not 1.12, so you might need to look for other sources for the newest rom.
Regarding the files in the shipped rom, those files are used for the non-SD rom upgrade method. You can check the sticky post to see how to use them. link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=14973
Good luck mate
Successfully change from WWE to CHT
Hurray! I have successfully flashed CHT to my O2 mini. I am using a traditional chinese device now!
Supprisingly! CHT uses lesser memory than WWE. I have 20.14MB Storage left for WWE after hardreset, but I am getting 21.04MB Storage left for CHT.
I am going to modify it to BigStorage....
My CHT BigStorage
Hey! I have successfully turned my new CHT O2 mini to Big Storage. The extra storage is similar to WWE version. Anyway, I am very happy now.

New Qtek S100 - A few clarifications needed

Hi,
I've just got a new S100 and I've got a few questions. Let me first explain at what state I am now. I got a french s100 shipped. So I updated it to WWE with the exe method and no_ID just to get it into english.
Now I would like to go for the mksbigstorage thing. I've read a lot of post on it but I would like a few clarifications.
1. Can you perform big storage through exe method or only by flashing from sd card?
2. Will I have a problem with flashing because my qtek was originally french?
3. What is the difference between exe method and flashing? Does one method do more than the other?
4. Why do I have to take the first 400 or so bytes from my own rom? Does this have to be the original french one (didn't back that one up) or can I take the one that on it now?
5. If I get stuck anywhere and my device goes dead. Is it then still always possible to upgrade the rom through the exe method to get it back to original? Or could this give problems with storage and ext_rom?
6. Is there a way to make your own rom? Are there tools for prepping files for the exe method?
7. Can someone explain me the memory devision of the qtek? I know 64 mb rom and 64 mb ram. But what get installed where? Is the ext_rom and storage in rom or ram? If you see on the memory screen storage and programs is this all ram?
8. I would like to keep as much ram free as possible. If ext_rom and storage are in ram would it be an option to not have ext_rom and have storage on sd card. If so how can one do that?
9. In my ext_rom there is tpenable and tpdisable, are these things used to specify where software gets installed? I've installed a few things and I think that they are eating up my ram.
I know these are a lot of questions but answers to these would help me understand my qtek better and help me to make a decision on what I'm going to do next.
Thanks,
Stekke.

confused about mem alloc. in wm2k5

hi there,
i've been looking for info. about upgrading himalaya to wm2k5 on this forum for days and i found there are several versions of the wm2k5 rom.
does it mean that wm2005 has NO memory (RAM) allocation setting so the amout of memory used to run programs is decided ONLY by (thus cannot be changed like wm2k3) the ROM being used?
but what if someone on 128Mb version found his 30M storage is not enough and he wants a 32M ramdisk?
the only way change it is to re-flash a different rom and hard-reset the device?

You got it right both times.
You did a good research job.

From BIGSTORAGE to NORMAL storage

How to go back from a bigstorage rom to a normal rom with 7 mb storage?
I can't find using search.
I need to do this cause i'm selling my.
Thanks.
I found a solution:
Back to BigStora, fill bigstorage /storage with 8-10MB (over 7MB) of data.
Then flash to ShipRom. normal storage will be back
Actually u dont need to fill the storage memory just simply flash it with any shipped rom ( depending on which set u have if its imate use an imate rom and if its a Tmobile compact then use that rom ) it wil be just like new with no bigstorage or anything

How much space required to flash a WM6 ROM?

I have an XDA Mini S with no additional space (didn't buy a mini-sd card for it). In System->Memory->Storage it says I have 47.46 MB total. Is that OK for flashing WM6 on it. Btw, it should have 64MB, I'm not sure why it says 47.46 MB (probably because it doesn't add the space occupied by the ROM?).
Thanky you
You don't need additional space, as the ROM is flashed to your Flash ROM directly.
The missing space is due to Extension ROM (10MB), some files and database copied during first cold start, and the applications installed from Extension ROM on first cold start.
and you´ll loose everything stored on your wizard during flashing process! so backup your contacts ...
