Anyone with an HP iPAQ h561x/h565x (YES, the never-released early iPAQ phone model)? - General Topics

No, I haven’t messed up the numbers: there were models in the h5600. It’s just that they have been cancelled by HP (see for example this article).
There, however, are still floating devices around (see for example this eBay auction); I’ve also been offered one, which, being a die-hard gadget freak & collector, I'm really interested in. However, it just doesn’t see either the Wi-Fi, the BT or the phone unit at all – in Wireless Control, not even the icons of the first two show up as can be seen in here and enabling the phone results in a “a wireless radio must be attached to use the phone” message as can be seen in here.
The ROM version in the device I’ve been offered is 0.81.13 ENG, dated 08/13/02 (that is, pretty early, taken into account that it was only later that the first rumors on the h5600 series surfaced) as can be seen in here; the device has the GSM module, which has the version WGM_1310something as can be seen in here.
Therefore, if anyone has a h561x or a h565x, please PLEASE let me know I’d be REALLY grateful for any kind of help or information on this device. You’ll get LOADS of greetings and thanks in any “retro review”-kind of article I may publish on this rarity.
I’d really want to have this prototype as a working device in my huge collection of old PDA’s, but would not prefer paying big bucks for it if it is almost completely useless (currently, it is – it’s PPC2k2-based, which means almost no support for any recently released Pocket PC application or game and doesn't support any wireless either).
BTW, the device is legal, even if it’s just a beta one - also see the comments here.
(BTW, don’t be afraid: I’m OK, the reason for my not having published really big articles for a month is that I’ve had a lot of work and the current article I’ve been working on for three weeks also needed a LOT of work and research. However, I really think it was worth the time and effort – it’ll be THE definitive article on everything Pocket PC – to – desktop PC control and will contain a lot of not-just-Pocket-PC-related information on remote controlling issues in general. That is, it’ll be worth reading for anyone that is interested in remote desktop protocols in general, not only Pocket PC users.)

I know that this post is damn old, but I just got such device from my friend. It's incomplete (he taken LCD to his 5450 and never ever tried to boot this), but I'm trying to complete it and got running.
PCB version is 0.5, there's a sticker on case with brief specification, including Proc: Cotulla B1 (so PXA250 @ 400MHz) RF: GSM, SD: Infenion (yes, Infenion, should be Infineon ) and SW Ver: 0.62.28... so much older than this on Yours photos.
GSM is Infineon WGM1310_v03. Ram 64MB (2x Infineon HYB25L246160AC-8), Rom 32MB (2x 128J3AMQG14). Motherboard is almost identical to h54xx photos i got from internet.
Photos, if anyone interested:

to
http://kitor.dynalias.com/ipaq/DSC_4322.JPG
they are huge (10mpx, ~5mb per file) and i have slow upload (256kbit) so be patient...
Basically, it looks that the mainboard was shared with all models prom h5xxx series, only difference was in used RF module and software.

My ipaq h5550 arrived, so i used parts from it to complete h5610. Seems to work, has got 0.81.13 ENG rom (so probably the latest developement rom made for it), and the same issues - wireless radio not attached. Only difference is that I got it only when I try to open Phone settings, dialing just give me "failed" message.
Wireless led is blinking after enabling WAN, but after a few seconds wan icon goes red (disabled), although led is still blinking.
I'll try to dig up rom/registry, but for now I'm playing with h5550, seems that after year wth Andorid i lost how WM looks

That is classic.. Should put it somewhere so that the future generation can see how much improvement of phone have gone thru..

has got 0.81.13 ENG rom (so probably the latest developement rom made for it)

I was wrong, it has got 0.81.16 rom dated 08/16/02
0.81.13 ENG, dated 08/13/02

so rom version is made from rom date... only three days difference
on label there are 0.62.28 (so 6/28) and 0.60.10 - but the latest one doesn't stick to my theory about rom dates

Just fund this thread here as I was looking to finally get my hands on a (partly) working h5600 series device.
If one of you wants to sell his device: Contact me
BTW looking also for Motorola MPx300 and MPx100 (which also was never released).
In 2003 I spoke to a HP person who told me that the h5600 series was cancelled because they never made the devices work. Later over at brighthand someone from HP said they had cancelled the h5600 series, because customers would prefer 2 devices connected via bluetooth.
Honestly I guess they cancelled development as the concept was way too tricky:
Years ago there was an h5600 device for sale on ebay. The seller offered various modules for wireless connectivity. It was planned to have one for mobile connectivity (gsm or cdma) and another one for wifi. Don't know what was planned for bluetooth!? Anyway, these modules should be swapped by the user depending on what he needs. Therefore there was an additional cover on top of the backside (over the battery).
So, if one wants to sell an h5600: Contact me!!

Well, three-four years ago there was seller on allegro.pl (polish equivalent of ebay) who had a lot of those devices. But I'm almost sure that they were bought for parts to repair official ones. They were also a few mpx300 but since then, i newer saw them again.
About modules - you may look at my photo. There's small PCB with RF module, on 5550 eg. it has WiFi and BT (but when I applied this to 5610, nothing happend - no drivers in 2k2 PE rom).
In 2003 I spoke to a HP person who told me that the h5600 series was cancelled because they never made the devices work.

This is almost certain. I remember those auctions, and this guy had a large amount of h56xx and written that they are turning on and supposed to have GSM, but it's not working in any of checked ones.
Oh, and there's mine, completed and running

How much did you pay for this?

I bought mine disassembled (sb took lcd and battery) for about $2-$3 (10PLN). They were sold complete on 2008 for 150PLN (=~$40), but the seller doesn't have them anymore

A theory on how to get WM5 on an HTC Magician

Ok, ok, I know this topic has been debated to death and anyone who posts topics relating to WM5 on a Magician usually get flamed big time but I am willing to stick my neck out just in case it might hold some promise, so here it goes...
Is it possible to flash WM5 on a Magician with Big storage and using DocTools to appropriate extra storage space for the OS? I realize that it would leave very little for program memory but in theory it should work.
What do you think?
xb, the problem isn't the lack of space. It's that the WM5 drivers for the Magician do not exist anywhere. The hacked roms that were made available on this board for other devices happened to be leaked betas or similar, where the original companies HAD gone to the effort of making the drivers. They could very easily make the drivers for the Magician. But we can't.
As such, it's like trying to put Windows Vista on a Windows 3.11 box without new drivers. Most of the 3.11 hardware might work without new drivers, but then again, most of it might not.
V
what if you use the Charmer ROM?
As far as I know, internally Charmer is very different compared to Magician. They use different processor, and different ROM structure.
Try this threat

I see. Oh well. C'est la vie...
Why didn't you ask that in an EXISTING thread?
I just can't believe these people. :x For sure we all dream of having WM5 on a Magician, but it has already been discussed a million times that it's not possible.
Forget winmo5, I'd like to see Symbian on my Magician.
This is about as likely, however.

SYMBIAN?? Buy a nokia phone then...
Why bother with S60? Windows mobile is way more powerful...
Symbian doesn't hang as often as WinDOS mobile, true. It also has less footprint, true.
However, different Symbians are NOT interoperable, and different versions of the same Symbian are NOT backward compatible. You can NOT use a Nokia N71 app on an N80 the way you could use an app from an O2 xda in an O2 mini. This is WAAAAY more closed a platform than WinDOS mobile 5.
(I know this because I was roped in to find my Nokia 80 friend some apps. A Nokia N phone was a previous choice I had once before I got my Mini through a better deal.)
Attempted backward compatibility is the reason for half of the crashes out there, btw. The score is skewed in Symbian's favor only because it eschews backwards compatibility completely.
Symb's about as valuable an OS as what you use in any ordinary mobile phone. In which case you might as well buy an ordinary mobile phone.
I've never seen my PocketPC/Windows Mobile phones hang spontaneously as a result of the OS.
Remember guys, that WinCE/WinMob is very distinct from the implementation of drivers and mods made by the OEM. I'm using a Mio A701 right now, and the (alpha/beta?) ROM I'm using is very unstable, and it makes you realise just how stable the Magician is.
I use an enormous amount of DIY mods and non-commercial code, and it makes me realise that crashing the phone is usually the result of badly coded software, not a badly implemented core OS.
So, blame your operator, or HTC, or whoever made the software you're running, before you can say categorically that the OS is as at fault.
I used the p900 for a year, and still love it - my modfied version was still more satisfying then any PocketPC I've used

.
However, that's as a simple phone. What I can do with a PocketPC, its potential (as a result of a very potent and under-used OS) is enormous. So, make it your own, program your own stuff, and be happy. Symbian might have the same potential but each to his own.

bah for me i want to try Linux on my magician but ONLY if i can come back to Windows Mobile 2003 SE just for see if Linux is okay for the "phone part" i have buy the magician for the phone too lol not only for the PDA use.
I have search long and i have see it's not possible to upgrade the magician for windows mobile 2005 i have tried the upgrade but i have see it's not for the magician the first time i have say: "mmmm why stopping upgradding? it's say ... haaaa it's for hymal ok not for me " (lol) so now i search some tricks, update, mods, unlock with the registry but it's hard to find
Hey Mr. Vi Jay ... I'm really curious about what you did modifying your SE P900 ... Appreciating what you did for UNI community I belong to for some time now - I'm really curious if you did any "beyond the additional software" mods to SEP900 system.
Do you have any info, links... maybe I would manage some more time to mod my good old P900 as well???

Vario III / Kaiser / TyTn II SLOW after flashing? (Partial Fix!)

Hello,
I just got a Kaiser (German T-mobile's Vario III) a few days ago.
I first encountered the "White screen" problem while trying to flash the HardSPL.
So I tried the JumpSPL (Which worked), then did the HardSPL Flash via the RUU update.
Afterwards I flashed the DCS 1.7 ROM... And I noticed my phone is SLOW. I mean very slow. It takes about 120 seconds to boot, the TouchFLO Cube runs VERY slow (And very unresponsive as well, its REALLY hard to get it to pop up and turn).
The camera (For taking pictures) is also really slow, but weird enough, not always, sometimes it will go down to 0.5 FPS, sometimes it will run fine.
I am sure my old wizard performed much better than this Kaiser. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way I can benchmark the performance and compare it to other user's phones?
Thanks!
UPDATE:
OK, so far I've found out two things that made my TyTN II so much faster:
1- My SD card was not properly formatted. (This worked with both my 2GB and 4GB MicroSD Cards! Both from Kingston.) My file system was incredibly slow. To fix this (And I mean really fix, this made my phone's file system SO much faster (According to SPB Benchmark)) Go here: http://www.sdcard.org/about/downloads/
Download and install the formatter, do a quick format with the option "FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT" on. (Dont be a jackass and remember to back up your data first... formatting will wipe all your data on your card).
2- .NET Framework was installed but apparently, not set to be running.
I went to do a registry edit under: \HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NetCompactFramework\
The entry (Name) "3.5.7283.00" (Which I believe is my .NET version's number) was set to (Data)0, I changed it to 1.
Still, I am under the strong impression that my TYTN's CPU is VERY sluggish, anybody has more tweaks like this?
A clue?... anybody?
Did you ever HARD RESET at the alignment screen after the flash and before the initial setup?
This is really hard to find, as it's scattered in a bunch of threads, so I won't tell you to 'READ' like I have in other recent threads...
However, it has been posted that WM6.1 for some users is SLOW compared to 6.0. For some users it's unbearable, and for others it's just fine.
One of the reasons might be that WM6.1 has debugging features enabled as it's not a shipping ROM but a leaked beta.
BTW, others have also stated that 6.1 is sluggish only for the first couple of hours (possibly after the debugging code has finished initializing, etc) and works as fast or faster than 6.0 (although the benchmarks say otherwise).
So you may just want to hang on for a couple more hours before reflashing...
Hope this helps!
@P1Tater:
Yes - I did hard-reset, I actually flashed the rom (DCS 1.7) 3x (Following the recommended flashing/hard reset procedures) to make sure I was following the steps.
@Alex:
Thanks alot for being leinent and not just saying "Use the search!" , the search in this forum can be a true PiTA.
What you wrote about the WM6.1 does make sense, yet... since we all have the same hardware, and we all follow the same procedures... shouldn´t we all have very similar (If not the exact same) results?
Right now Im trying to get this SPB Benchmark running (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/) The "Home user" version of their benchmark seems to be free, will you guys care posting your results so I can compare?
I'll post mine ASAP.
Here, I got a direct dload link: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/downloads/benchmark/SpbBenchmark1.6_setup.zip

We have benchmarks posted in a ton of threads too. Early ones show 6.1 as being slower than 6.0 by about 5% to 10%. I haven't kept up on this as of late though...
FYI, I know dutty put out some benchmarks for a 6.1 ROM that he couldn't release that was leaked and Microsoft actually told XDA-Developers to *REMOVE* it. I think this one was an non-debug version, because Microsoft hasn't asked us to remove any of the other 6.1 ROMs released by tuspidin, which we are all using variants of now...
Alright, im going to look around then.
Will still post mine here, just for the hell of it...
About Microsloth:
How come they are so picky about this? We all have "Licences" for WM, don't we? - If im not mistaken, both HTC and most mobile carrier providers will offer free upgrades of WM to their customers, so why bug xda about offering alternate versions of licenced products?

I think Microsoft decided to say that if a LEAKED WM6.1 comes out, it's going to have our debug phone home code in it, so they can gather useful customer feedback.
I had a thread about that too. I didn't go into depth about conspiracy theories though, since it was focused more towards other chefs, and i try to avoid sounding like a kook instead of a cook
Oh, as for why things perform at different speeds for different people, that depends on how each individual perceives the linear progression of the fourth dimension within our three dimensional world. (edit2: Excuse me as I remove my quantum mechanic bong from my arse...)
This is the reason why I believe in benchmarks over any individual's perceptions...
Alright, I ran that benchmark thingie, and judging by the results, I think there's definitely something wrong with my device/config:

[APP REQ] Formula 1 Live Timing

The new 2009 formula 1 season is on its way and it would be nice to be able to follow a race on our phones. So far i have only seen a java application that does this job but the resolution is far too small
(Live Yamigo - check it out here http://live.yamigo.com/F1Servlet/)
I have no idea about developing so, does any developer want to develop this for us? I'd gladly assist in the graphics work.
Functions:
Live timing
Lap chart
Comentaries Feed
Weather Screen
vga res & other
Im sure there are much more people interested in such an application.
You are right, I'm interested!
Sorry I can't develop it, though..
Please post questions and/or requests in the Questions and Answers section of the forum. This thread will probably be moved to that section. Thanks.

I'm interested too...
But before starting a dev, we need to know where to find datas... I don't know websites that send such informations...
Do you mean the live timing? If so you can get it free from http://www.formula1.com. This uses a java applet to show lap times etc, I also have this on when im watching the live qualifying/race.
yes live timing..i also tried that on my touch pro but its very small resolution and it only takes up a small portion of the screen..making it extremely hard to read..id love to see this developed for vga too...
Hi guys,
I've just tested the service, and it works well. But as already said, its so small resolution.
I've downloaded the LARGE version (http://live.yamigo.com/F1Servlet/dl/), even that is small for my HTC Touch Diamond. Its probably 320x240.
Anyway its the only way to have the F1 Live Timing. Thanks for the intel.
AleX
The large version works fine on my HTC Advantage X7500. But then I didn't install any high res applications. So perhaps that's why the application displays larger on my device. It's reasonably close to full screen.
I do keep getting internet connection security dialogs (need to click yes everytime it downloads a bit of data). Is there a wat to prevent that? Can I mark the application as trusted or something?

You would need to upgrade the JAVA version on your phone if you have a wm 6.1/6.5. If you have a version of WM prior to that then I am afraid that you will just have to keep clicking on connection dialog iirc.
I will ask a couple of lads at work to see what they can do (if they can be bothered that is) as I work as IT support for a JAVA house that specialises in connected apps and I know quite a few of the developers like F1

I've got the "intent Midlet Manager" version 11.1.7.1036 on it. I think that's the most recent version.
I've found a workaround though. I wrote the yamigo developers and they indicated that I should get only 2 dialogs. Then I found that indeed I got only 2 and it kept stable after that. Then I switched apps and the dialogs returned.
Seems like it only works when I have my internet connection closed before I open the java midlet and then let the midlet connect.
Weird, but it works.

I once decompiled the original F1 live timing application. Not sure if it's still that easy, but I could read the source for the entire java application. I used that to work out the live datastream. Never got around to writing the WM app that I planned though.
Here a screenshot from the application working on my device:

Last summer I made live-f1 version that works somehow in HTC hermes running WM6.0 (HTC original). It is based on the live-f1 program source code that works in linux xterm. It has WM gui (without any touch specific features). Features include only timing data, fastest lap, and comments. Timing screen is scrolled with arrow keys.
I was thinking about delayed timing feature next, but due to FIA favoring double diffuser Teams, I have not had motivation to make that part.
Open Source live timing library written in .NET
If anyone is interested, I've written a library - Open Source in C# - to receive the live timing data from the server used by the official live timing app. Obviously it's reverse engineered, so I haven't yet done all of the data. However the interesting stuff is done (i.e. not the weather info).
Note: It's currently targeted at the desktop .NET framework, but shouldn't take much effort to port it to the compact framework if any one is interested.
So..if anyone would like to develop some app's I've also included some existing recorded data that can be 'played' back using the library's simulator component so you won't have to wait for an actual race event to see if your app works.
It can be found here Live Timing Home Page (http://livetiming.turnitin.co.uk)
Thanks,
Liam.
p.s. If you'd like to contribute your app's and or code to the project, let me know and I'll add you in.
I have just looked on the website of post #1 and this is still 2009. I was wondering waht offerings are there for Formual 1 for 2010 for the HD2.

Same here, trying to figure out a way to have live timing on my HD2
Official app soon available? http://www.formula1.com/mobile_services/live_timing.html
Heres the official jad file. Its for the HD and i cant get it to work on my Diamond 2, so cant let you know if it works or not.
works on first run, causes error on second launch, have to re-install!!
It's now not on the f1 website again, I guess they realise there is an issue with it and are trying to fix it?
I'm still laughing at those with an iphone who have to pay £20 for the official app and we get it for free!!
I've downloaded the "HTC HD2" version, and it isn't working at all with jbed:
E: 2java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
But, with jblend works
They have been putting it on the web and removing it since yesterday... a little bit more testing wasn't been that bad
Edit: I forget to mention that, even it's working with jblend... i cannot sign-in with my email/password... i've been forced to "Try" the application
What phone, what java version?
I am unable to run it on Diamond using JBed. Anybody succeeded with this. If yes, what midlet manager is able to run this applet? Thanks.

KIA Ceed 2008
Installation:
Installation was pretty easy. Once I got rid of the middle console and removed the old Radio, the installation was easy. Stuff all the adapters (WIFI, 3G, GPS) where it makes sense and fix the Radio. You need a 2DIN Install-Cage for your Car, so get that ahead of time. I won't go deeper into the installation, there are numerous "how-to"s that do this way better than I can
Getting Started:
After the installation, the unit gives you no basic steps like you would assume from Android (the timezone, user, mail stuff). General Language is set to English, the Keyboard has an additional Asian keyboard as well so set this to your desired language asap. The unit is fast, the UI is well thought out for Car use. CD play and DVD (region 2, Europe) was no problem and also fast. I added another Bluetooth Adapter because the onboard bluetooth has the known limitations for this kind of head units (only phone connection) and I want to use my Bluetooth ODB2 Adapter.
Until now, I have only positive things to say about this unit. I had a China-Unit before, which broke down after a year of usage and where the hardware quality just wasn't good (wobbly buttons, display kept getting pushed in because it was not mounted correctly and so on). This has a good hardware quality (until now )
Over the next few days, I will configure the Bluetooth stuff and I will see how well configurable the hardware buttons are (for example: Start Spotify instead of the music app when I press on Music and so on).
If you also Plan to get an Android Unit and don't want to wait for Android Auto (and the fact that all units will start at around 1000 € probably ), this may be your unit.
They ship from the UK (even have a warehouse in Germany, where I come from) so if you are in Europe, you don't have to worry about taxes and so on. Also, shipping was very fast (like.. Amazon fast).
Please tell me your experience with this device

Spyware?
I have installed this unit this past weekend and I really like it. I have a question though about the possibility of having pre-installed spyware from the chinese on these android devices. How would I go about detecting the possibility that there is something lurking somewhere?

Hi, could you make a photo of your Settings->About screen? Would be curious about the system version and the MCU Version you have.
Does the radio already play when booting up or do you have to wait until the boot is completed?
Thanks!

I have the same unit and have been running it for a few weeks. I really like this head Unit and would very much like to root it as it does NOT come rooted. I would like a "safe" way to gain root access.

You asked for the Settings/About screen for this unit (TD-626A) didn't you?
Of course, you are right. Thanks for the pics
I read somewhere you wanted to root the unit, that's why I provided you the link to the huifei forum.
Have fun with your xtrons!

CHUWI Hi8 SE Tablet Any Good?

Anyone have a CHUWI Hi8 SE 8-inch Android 8.1 Oreo Tablet?
I was looking on Amazon and the specs seem pretty good, but I've never really heard of the company.
Are they any good?
Reliable?
I'm tempted to buy one.
I just got one today, haven't had much time to try it out yet. I'll write more next time.
In the meantime, I also have a few questions regarding the Chuwi's Android flavor (for anyone that might know the answers):
- With the default setup/launcher, is there really no way to customize the toggles in the notification area?
- Is it possible to use gestures instead of the bottom row 3 buttons? Haven't found the related settings anywhere yet.
I bought this tablet recently. It is a great value for the money!
Great screen, vanilla Android 8.1.0, no bloatware, 32gb storage.
My only complaint is that I'm completely unable to format SD card as internal (it has the option) or move apps to SD (there is no option). It's really weird and I'd like to figure this out!
I love it so far. Using it mounted in car for Waze navigation and Amazon music with everything automated through Automate Android app.
I agree, it's a great value for money, and unlike some (?) Xiaomi devices (which are actually great as well), it comes without bloatware and the kill-me-now privacy policy (and I can pretty much disable all apps I don't need, which was impossible on my last Xiaomi "trip").
And their support is even more responsive than that of my bank.
Other than that, I miss gestures (the bottom 3-button row on the screen is the only way to go), and I installed Nova launcher because I didn't really like the default one.
One more thing... the recovery mode is in Chinese - can someone post a translation of the first level menu?

Really undecided buying this Chuwi or Lenovo P8 4g: they have similar price but different specs...

It's not a bad tablet. Build-quality is pretty good and for the money, it is a good value. My only problem with it is that it doesn't recognize any of the Micro SD cards I put in (cards are fine as I tested them in other devices).
Came across some weirdness in one of the two system updates sections - namely, every now and then, the checking for updates fails, and the status line says
Code:
Failed to connect to fota5t.xxx.com/0.0.0.0:443
(see the screenshot below)
Sometimes it gets resolved correctly in the same session. My guess is they (Chuwi?) have issues with DNS or are attacked occasionally.... I mean, why in the world would the update URL end in xxx.com (the 0.0.0.0 IP is probably one of my blockades, on the other hand).
Hi. Is possible root this tablet? Thanks you
Translation for boot menu
Here's the translation for the boot menu

Clear eMMC
Version Information
restart cellphone
Thank you for this. So there is no "wipe cache" option (unless it's in a submenu), is that possible?
CHUWI Hi8 SE performance
The performance is very poor. The interface is not moving smooth at all. It cannot play 60FPS (neither 1080p nor 720p) clips in YouTube app. Chrome frequently freezes in use for 1 or 2 seconds.
Touch screen is very very poor. Is not calibrated and very insensitive.
Disappointed!
Any possibility to root the device?
TWRP or root solution for this device?
Very good price from BangGood
Managed to find its base ROM on Chuwi's official forum.
It'd be great to be able to root it or, even better, to have an Android 5 ROM for it since Oreo (8) is a bit laggy. ~
I recommend it ! :fingers-crossed:
Android 9
Any news with Android 9 for this device ?
Thanks
One of two bricked,
I bought two for my kids, one of them just died after 6 months, haven't figured figure out what yet, suspect battery. As I bought from banggood it's no point claiming warranty, cost to much time. Bought new in Europe, lesson learned.

If it's bricked, try reinstalling its base ROM ! (available on their forum, forum.chuwi.com)
