Newbie question: What is G3, G4, etc - and how do I tell?

Hello - This forum is a great resource; unfortunately the wiki portion isn't quite ready yet...
I've done a forum search on this topic (using the "search" function), but it wasn't very useful. Google was more helpful - I've learned that apparently G3 or G4 has to do with the kind of flash memory used on a HTC Prophet.
How do I tell if my device uses G3 or G4 flash memory?
I just picked up a Dopod 818 Pro last week. It was brand new in the store, but I'm not sure when it was actually produced. The case features the newer, easier to read style Dopod logo (as opposed to the logo that looked like a bunch of circles with some dots above or below).
It seems to have the most basic/early ROM version there is - 1.0.13.21 WWE.
The ExtROM version is: 1.00.13.102. The ROM date is 11/24/05.
From what I'm reading here, I think my device would benefit greatly from a firmware upgrade.
To do that, I need to know - is this a G4 or G3 device? Do I need to CID unlock this device in order to put new firmware on it?

Hi Dan, if your SPL ends in .000 you have a G3 chip, if it ends .001 then you have G4. softreset you device to see the IPL and SPL version.
You will need to CID unlock your device before changing you ROM.

as i know, you don't have to CID unlock your device. You only have to change the Romupdateulility.exe (extract the downloaded .EXE file with winrar) with this file

IPL/SPL 3.08 and new radio ROM 2.69.21

As nobody has posted this information here before: there're some news in the Prophet upgrading scene
IPL/SPL 3.08 update is out (adapted from the official t-mobile Germany AKU3.3 for HTC Charmer, thanks to our friends from 4pda.ru).
Be attended that for the moment there're no downgrading experiences to the AKU2.2!
[edit 1] Some users reported that it definetly works for G3 devices.
So if you upgrade your device to IPL/SPL 3.08 you will possibly not be able to go back to your original IPL/SPL (warranty!). Test it on your own risk!

Since there're different upgrade IPL/SPL ROM's available you've exactly to know which device you're owned (G3 or G4).
The new radio rom is for both, G3 and G4.
Also a new radio ROM 2.69.21 is available (don't wonder about italian Wizard's update utility). All user experiences are welcome

Is there any reason for a Prophet user to upgrade to the new one?

It is not possible to downgrade ipl/spl at all.
I don't understand the confusion here

does it only work with aku 3.3 roms or it can work with the latest Qtek official rom (aku 2.2)?

There's no question about possibility to downgrade ipl/spl, there's a question about possibility to install an earlier AKU on such upgraded device, for example 220734_NoVID (AKU2.2).

I want to know, too.
If I upgrade to IPL/SPL 3.08, can I install 2.20 QTEK ROM on it?

Now i reburn old OS to bring the system up and running! He enter only the Bootloader.

[edit 2] ok both doesnt work on a German S200 G4 (possible -> CID Lock make the problem!! or the firmware writer)
IPL/SPL Update hung at 2% and Radio Update too ... after them i must reburn the 02.61.21 Radio Rom
Note to every body ... dont use this upgrades!
[edit 3] i change now the firmware writer and test again!
[edit 4] ... redandr ... you use the wrong firmware writer! extract with winrar the Prophet_G3_G4_RadioRom_v2.61.21.exe in a directory. then i extract the nk.nbf file from your rom version ... then i put them over the v2.61.21 version and flash again ... then it works ... now i recompile the update and test ipl/spl update. if i am finish i upload a working version!!!

i use the Firmware Writer from last 2.61.21 "newromupdateutility_noid.exe"
Then it works ... tested on two German S200 G4

IPL/SPL doesnt work ... hung on 2% its a writer problem

For me Wizard's update utility worked without problems (for radio rom upgrade), didn't try to change ipl/spl (not necessary for me).

Radio Rom 2.69.21 works fine for me on my Qtek S200 G3... I used the upgrade from the first post... did not try the ipl/spl yet because I am not sure if need it...
so far, radio rom 2.69.21 is very good... I had some problem with 2.47 and 2.61 (phone not ready...)... but with this one, it seems to be ok...

Great! It works again! I also had the problem of sticking at 2%.

I flash my Dopod Pro 818 with IPL 2.20.000 and it was change from IPL 3.08.000 to IPL 2.20.000 . I get by mistake IPL 3.08. 000 dan SPL 3.08.000 from another thread in Prophet Upgrading, and now I want to change my SPL lower. Any suggestion?

I have tried many version SPL and IPL on my Dopod Pro 818 like 3.08, 2.15 (from Dopod ) and I think the best version is IPL: 2.20; SPL 2.20. Its easy to upgrade any ROM (G3 ROM) and enjoy the speed

I had SPL 3.08.000 on my Dopod 818 pro before, and found jesters ROM upgrade in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284578. After flashing with this ROM, my SPL change from 3.08 to 2.20. Hope it can be solve your problem too

appreciate that.. was looking for a single file for spl upgrade just like the ipl 2.20

Really Need Help here!!!
first, im a newbie.. -_-
and i hav dopod 818pro (g3).. i've never update roms or anything until i see ipl/spl and radio update.
so i update it (ipl) from 1.00, and now changed into 2.20. but havent update the spl. so it still 1.00.0000..
after update ipl it seems nothing unusual happen, after that i update the radio from (11320) into the recent (2.69.21)
and update success, but the opening screen that only show dopod logo and ipl,spl,os..
bcoz i think there was written "gsm" before the os/ after the spl, but now dissappear..
after that the loading is fine, and show the today screen. and i wanna restart it again to see the ipl,spl,etc..
after i see those, my dopod is restart otomatically and back to the HTC screen, then dopod logo with ipl/spl screen, then restarting again to the HTC screen, dopod logo ipl spl os again..
so how can i fix it bcoz now the today screen not appear alt all.. this restart loading cant reach the main screen/today screen.
so i thought i wanna reinstall the original rom, or maybe rom doesnt hav any connection with ipl/spl? so how, even open the start menu i cant..

need help..
anyway my rom version is 1.0.13.21, ext rom ver is 1.00.13.102..
and one thing, dunno why now it can reach the today screen like usual.
so i juz clear storage and reinstall.. but still showin ipl/spl: 2.20/1.00.0000, gsm is missing, and os: 1.0.13.21..
its juz showin 3 things..
luckily it can show the today screen like usual, but i hav 2 wait 4 long time.. thats not usual.
and the performance of this pda is much slower than before..
and it says no service, or cant make/get a call, sms, and everything related to service provider at all..
bcoz rite now, my pda cant detect anything..
and 1 thing, my battery status always charging, even i dont charge it.
i wanna ask sumthing also, do i need 2 upgrade my rom version before i wan to upgrade into PDAViet rom?
or i can directly upgrade 2 PDAViet from my current rom version?
bcoz i saw sum ppl say, if want to upgrade, must from version 2.00 or earlier..

You can upgrade your OS using AKU 2.15 from Dopod official sites and it change your version Radio too. Another way, you can upgrade to Jesters ROM with AKU 2.20. After that you can flashing any PDA Viet ROM. Read the howto procedure first and wellcome to flashing addiction forum.

Hi,
I know all about search and know how to use it. Doing this favor for a friend and I need to install a rom on his qtek. Don't know much about it but I did change the IPL and SPL to 2.21.xxx1
Now I did try to install a wm6 rom, the SNN v2, but it asked me to upgrade my utilities. A search on the forum came negative. What did I do wrong and how can I rectify?

Are you sure its IPL/SPL 2.21.xxx1,if it is then its a G4 device, you cannot flash any wm6 rom onto it directly,it can only be upgraded through either 'SoftSPL' or 'HardSPL'. as it cannot be CID unlocked and its required to have a CID unlocked phone to upgrade to wm6 Rom.

I did this with my Qtek 9100 and now I can try any WM6-rom I like.

Yes! your phone is a G3 device with ipl/spl 2.xx or 2.xx.xxx,it can be CID unlocked,but his phone is a G4 with ipl/spl 2.21.xxx1,it cannot be CID unlocked like your
