Hello,
I am new to the site and I have just purchased myself an o2 orbit. I am really happy with it but also very keen to understand how I can enhance its performance or tweak it.
Will their be a section for this phone?
Sorry if I am being impatient but I am raring to go.
Has anyone else got this phone yet? if so what have you done with it? Also where can I buy accessories for it?
I look forward to your responses.
Steve

Orbit and TomTom
Hi
i am very new to this thread, so hello and i thank you in advance for any help people are willing to offer.
I am going to be picking my Orbit up tomorrow from my local O2 store. I was wondering if anyone can confirm that TomTom is definately included with the UK models. I have seen on a couple of forums that some people are saying it isn't.
I think your phone is in the Artemis forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=316
Obit
Hi all,
I have never owned an XDA but thought I would put a post about the Orbit that I purchased 2 days ago.
It is an excellent piece of kit .. By default it does not come with TomTom (I was offered CoPilot with a £40 contract but I already had TomTom so I declined. I have put TomTom on the device and it works brilliant .. it seems much more accurate than my palm version (probably more accurate GPS device inside).
I used TomTom for an hour today and my battery went down 2%! Brilliant.
Everything is good about the device .. the only gripe I have is that the microphone socket is mini usb (but I am sure there is a convertor out there for that).
The radio is good too (this also seems to have a minimal drain on the battery).

Ok, my PDA2K is running WM5.0 but as you all may know it still has flaws and well I have had it for over a year and think it's time to get a new phone, the only problem is that I have no way of seeing or using any of these WM5.0 devices until I buy it. so I wanted to ask all the users of these devices what they suggest.
Your information would be greatly appreciated.
so you're not able to go down to a store and try before you buy??...is that what you mean??
"other device"
I suggest the Advance TC M.A.G.I.C.

Ya the only phone they have available here is the HTC Wizard branded as the T-Mobile MDA, but even whith that all the T-Mobile stores say they will more than likely not have it in stock

man that is sweet built in gps too, but I wouldn't be suprised if it turned out to be like the Motorola MPx
Actually, I've been in contact with this company, and they confirm a launch. A more exact date can be pinpointed by mid-April. They already have a sole distributor to handle things as well
well then I am going to look to you to let me know when who and if you can how much
I am sure like all new Windows phones it will hit the market at some outrageous amount right....
Do you have any additional info you could pm me??
Thanks
Check your PM box. I PMed you some details on the device. If you have any further questions, just PM me and I can forward to my contact in Advance TC
I've recently got myself the Mio A701 (used to have a JAM).
A nice PPC. Its got GPS builtin which is very useful and is only marginally larger than the JAM was.
Comes with lots of good extras - car screen mount, car charger etc.
And it's no more expensive than things like the JAMin.
I feel I've made a good buy
One downside is that being very new the Mio support website aint got a lot on it yet. But apparantly they are working on some ROM updates.
See it here.
Hi guys,
I'm a noobie here as my whopping total of 1 posts indicates.
I've been reading through the forum over the weekend and have learned a lot from the posts here. Unfortunately its left me more confused over which XDA I should get. So i'm going to take the easy route and ask you guys.
I've got, and have been happy using an Ipaq H5550 for a couple of years now. Both for work and pleasure, but 'The Powers That Be' now claim I need a mobile as well :?
I've spent a fair bit of time, effort and money on the H5550, what with Accessories, Utils, Apps and Games, which i'd like to keep if possible. So, my question is:
Which XDA would you guys advice as a replacement for my H5550 ?
On spec's my guess is the XDA Exec, but any advice from real world users would be more than welcome.
Thanks ZaForD.
Ah yes the H5550, an oldy but a goody!
Any way, for us to recommend a device we need to know more about your preferences / intended use.
The hottest thing (if you can wait a bit) is the Hermes / TyTN that's about to come out. It's only deficiency is that it is not VGA like the exec.
Personally, I like my Jamin (Prophet) because of connectivity and size and a price that doesn't go through the roof, but some people might say it's a bit slow, and has no keyboard (not that I need one).
And, if you don't mind a big device with a square 240 by 240 screen, there is the HP 6900 that has WiFi BT and GPS (a rare combination in a phone).
As they say to each hi own, so you have to be a bit more specific.
P.S. Welcome to the forum!
Hi levenum,
Oop's, I can see how some info on what features I need/use would be helpful before you give any advice.
Basically, I do mobile repairs, helpdesk/support, for small offices in London. So I need a fairly powerful device to run Network/Daignostic software. WiFi is a must both for connecting to local networks and our office via the Net. BT would be handy for handsfree use, the Ipaq can get pretty heavy when using Skype for a while.
Size isn't really a problem, as i'm used to the H5550. Which from what I gather is bigger than most of the XDA's here. Again the Ipaq has no keyboard so thats not a problem. Neither is GPS, after 10 years as a messenger around London, I think I know my way round.
I'll check out the Prophet and Hermes, the more options the better.
p.s. Thanks for the welcome.
Well now that I know that your main uses are WiFi and Skype I can tell you that Prophet may not be the device for you after all.
It supports WiFi b and g (where a lot of phones only support b) and it has BT, but from what I've seen on the forums it needs to be overclocked for Skype to work smoothly (although it comes with Skype preinstalled).
I haven't tested this my self though.
One thing I forgot to tell you is that there is a comparison chart in the WiKi for different HTC devices, and there is a nice site www.gsmarena.com that gives specs and user ratings on most GSM phones out there today from different companies.
Check it out.
Thanks for your help levenum,
I checked out GSMarena and came up with a short list of XDA Exec, and Atom Exec there was no real info on the Hermes. But I read alot about it here, so I added it to my list.
After hunting round for most of the afternoon, it turns out that the Atom and the Hermes. Aren't really available yet, so it looks like i'll be getting the XDA Exec. Just gotta see whos got the best deals now.
And start working my way through the Universal forum.
Welcome to the forum!
Having had xda's for a few years now, (since the 1st one was released) and in my work testing many new devices, im still delighted with my exec, espcially the screen, but mainly the keyboard and connectivity options. For your uses the mini laptop mode the exec on a desk whilst working, in tandem with the keyboard, you will soon wonder how you managed without one!
Down sides to the exec, as a phone its maybe a bit bulky to use as an everyday mobile (pub, days out without the car etc) but not much worse than any other pda phone on the market.
Hope that helps settle your mind to the exec, you wont regret it i reckon!
Cheers,
Bryson
Hi Bryson,
Thanks for the welcome.
I just saw a couple of comments about the 'laptop mode' while getting very confused in the Universal section.
I have to say I really like the idea of it. I used to use a Thinkpad X21 [lovely little laptop] for work and missed the screen and keyboard when I first swaped over to the H5550. Now it looks like I can have the best of both worlds.
The Exec is around the same size and weight as the H5550, which I usually carry around with me as an MP3 player when not at work. So the bulk shouldn't a problem.
A couple of things i'm still alittle unsure about [due mainly to not having a mobile for years] is how well it works with a BT headset, and is it possible to use it as a phone via the BT headset, while using Terminal Service over WiFi ?
If it can, I may never have to leave the pub.
Hello all,
I am new to PDA's, and I know this may be a stupid question or one that is obvious to the regular users, but I have the offer of the 2 for the same price, and am not sure which to take?
So it comes down to which is best. Is it a matter of which you prefer or is there a hands down best PDA out of these 2.
Edit that should be Hermes or Universal....
Many thanks.....
I was a bit undecided whether i wanted this model as well but it just looks great! I saw a video and some live photos for the O2 XDA Trion and I dont really care how well it works when it looks that good :->
I got the Universal, I picked up one cheap and it is great condition. Thought it was bulky, and the phone is not too good. My friend had a Hermes and he has passed it on to me for doing a job for him. Anyway after using the Hermes for a day or 2, I think the Universal is better overall. The Hermes is great, it is compact ,does everything well. But the Universal is such a good PDA.
Which one to keep? Hmmmmm..
Hi guys/gals,
I'm going to be getting a work mobile in a few weeks on the O2 network in the UK. I was thinking of a blackberry but then saw the XDA's (HTC). I don't really need a PDA but its a works phone and having excel would make my job a lot easier as I don't have a laptop but need some access to excel in the warehouse, as well as outlook and messenger when I'm out on site.
Now the 2 that's I'm looking at are the XDA Stellar (http://www.my-xda.com/devices/xda_stellar.jsp) and Orbit 2 (http://www.my-xda.com/devices/xda_orbit2.jsp). The problem is that they are just re-branded on the O2 network and I cant figure out which are the related HTC phones. So could someone tell me which are which so i can do some more research.
I have been reading review and seems the Stellar is a better PDA/phone as its got the slide out KB. But typical O2, i cant really tell what are the differences as one pages says one thing and the other something else.
Does the stellar have a touch screen like the orbit, with the same funtionality?
Both do Wifi and GPS?
can i get tomtom software for the XDA?
whats the battery life like on both phones? (I have heard horror stories when using 3G or WiFi with a sub 4 hour battery life)
Can u 'image' the OS and stuff like u can on a PC to back up everything? (i ask because I do like to have a play and its nice to know u can get it back to factory settings again)
any helpful links u peeps might have to gimmi a help deciding? reviews, guides ect ?
Sorry for all the questions. I really like the look of them but have never had a chance to use one so I thought i would be best to ask soem people who know the in's and out's.
thanks for the help i hope to receive!!!
Peace
SN
ha haa..
no help but i sorted it out anyway. Stellar/TyTn II is the plan.
Guy's,
I'm sadly informing you that my Uni is dead!
Actually it is not dead; it's switched on but a white screen and I can't see anything on the screen. I seems the display is damaged. I've unmounted the whole unit, did a cleanup and re-assembled but my bad luck ...
There is no spare available in my country (Bangladesh) for Uni so I can't even repair it.
Thanx to MyMobiler, it has given me the access to my device and this thread has been created using the benefit of this nice tool.
I have completed a new build couple of days back. It is a bug-fix build of v8.0 but based on 19960 core. I'll upload it sometime next week (without beta testing).
I suppose it will be the last present from "TOMAL" for our beloved Universal.
All the best.
Thanks for your hard work, for keeping our uni's alive for a long time, I hope you 'll find a solution to fix your device, and give us more great rom's.
"All things shall come to pass"
Thank you very much Tomal, your great work helped many Uni's around the world.
V8 is so stable, i am positive many people will keep on using it for a long time (I included).
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (and other goods from your kitchen).
Alslamo Alykom My brother Tomal
It is the most bad news today. I think it is not the end of Tomal's era but may be the end of Uni era at all for a lot of us.
I think that we should start to find a way to repair ur device not only thanking u for ur past effort. Why not to donate u to buy another one or any one from europe could send u the accessory part u need.
Anothyer solution that will take longer time is sending ur device with one of ur country citizenzs who travel frequently to Arab nations where there is a lot of workshops that can repair it. May i arrange for something like that, if u interested please PM me.
It is a call for all uni lovers to donate to Tomal to support him to ride over his current problem.

Hi Tomal,
sorry to hear your leaving the forum. However don't give up on you universal just yet. The same thing happened my device just two days ago. After two days working on it I took all of the RF cage lids off and used a spray on Electrolube FLUXCLENE. on everything including internal connectors. (Also used a hot air gun on the internal components. Build my uni back up again and it has been working ever since. Even has better than usual battery life.
Look forward to your last build, my only issue with the last one was that the front facing camera did not work.

Nooooo!
I'm not saying any good byes to the great TOMAL here... after a long long time i got my self satisfied with some ROM. every thing was so at ease. even though the bugs and short comings are there but i must confess the V8 is the best, FAST & STABLE ROM ever.
pls. find a way to fix your UNI. or try some thing from Pakistan. eveything is easily availabe here....
farehmani
I agree to the post written by another member.I believe that his huge efforts making the uni so long lasting deserve a small donation from us all (say 3$) which would help him get a new screen and proceed with his fine work.
I'll now intantly check if i have a sum left to my paypal account to donate him for his work and hope for his return...
V8.0
Hello Tomal ! ! ! ! I am sad to hear that you are having problems with your Universal. I am very impressed now with your v8.0 very fast & stable since you have helped us with information on fixing the current bugs in your v8.0 rom. I must say it is truthfully the best cooked rom I have ever used on my "Qtek 9000". At this time I have everything running perfectly on your v8.0 which I have read through your entire forum for v8.0 and have fixed all the problems that I was encountering in your v8.0. The only thing I ask you to do if you can do this on your next fixed release on v8.0 to have the extended rom (storage) accept software downloads. I use a lot of third party software on my device for my company needs and have put that software on the flash disk. The other software I was forced to put on a storage card which I could not put directly in the extended rom (storage) because if I put additional 3rd party software on my device it would take up to much space. Even though I had my ram upgraded from 64mb to 128mb this year in January of 2008 year by PocketPCTechs out of California which did an excellent job and a reasonable price. Once your v8.0 is released next week I will test this. If I am 100% completely satisfied I will make a large donation directly to "Tomals Paypal" to help you in the repair of your Univerisal or toward a purchase for a used or new Univerisal on ebay. I strictly use my "Qtek 9000" for my companies which your great roms keep my Univerisal running and going. The only other thing I ask of you Tomal that the only thing I could not get to work is the "Network Wizard". I can install the software on the device but when I tap on the icon nothing happens. The only way I can get this to work is go to File Explorer then to go to windows and tap on the "Network Wizard" icon which then works. So at this time I have removed this from my device until it works properly hopefully on your next v8.0 fix. So if everybody else that uses "Tomals Cooked Roms" would make any type of donation where we have enough people contributing then Tomal would have enough donations to purchase a new Universal. That would be greatly appreciated. As you can see Tomal has put many, many hours and hard work & effort to making these cooked super great Roms possible and for the Universal to live on. So we should also help him to make his cooked roms keep going on. So let's make the difference by making a donation today.
A salute to you sir, you enabled me to get vastly more enjoyment out of my very exspensive mobile phone. You are the man!
heh!
I´m sure toghrther we can help you in some way!
Hi Tomal
I ask you to don´t give up on your Uni
We are a lot the people who are using your ROM´s very happy
So I porpose, as someone said it before, that we donate a small amount to help you buy another Uni, the piece you have broken, or any other way you want us to help you.
It´s the minimal effort we can do toghther to support the guy has been supporting and keeping alive our Uni´s around the world.
SO PLEASE ALL!!!
It´s time to really unite and help
Tomal, let us know how much you need to fix your problem, so we can see how much money we have to raise (Ok guys it´s not going to be a high amount)
Waiting your reply and hoping the Tomal´s ROM users can joint to HELP
My best wishes to all
PD: I found this site on the forum with good comments about delivery service, from China to Bangladesh I think it´s not too far?...
http://cnn.cn/shop/dopodo2-d900-universal-platform-c-138_385.html
Hope this helps, not sure if this is the part you need. But in case it is Guys look at the price, how much you think we have to cooperate for each person?3 dollars, 4 dollars!!
Let´s help!, of course if Tomal agrees
Thank you so much
Thank you so much for your feeling. I'm simply impressed!!
I'm actually not sure about which part is damaged whether it's the main board or just the display assembly. Interestingly I can still access my Uni using the MyMobiler.
Just for you guy's information, it's not easy to get any spare over mail/courier due to govt. regulations in my country. Only alternative I can see is to send the device (for repair) to Europe or other places when someone traveling there.
Hi Tomal it seems the cable which transmits signals to display got broken, my offer to you is if you can post your uni to me here in UK then i ll get it fixed for you and will send it back, you have done so much for us now its time for us to do something for you

PD: Perhaps this guy can help also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405566
he´s so greatfull to this site that maybe he can do something, just an idea..
Tomal: Can you buy a new or second hand Uni in your country from anywhere?
If so, then I suggest we have a collection and send Tomal the money directly so he can buy it himself, this way there is no problem with shipping and the mail
If not, then we could buy a new screen from eBay and try to send it in the mail to him - this would be cheaper but more risky. A small flat screen should fit quite easily into a letter and be very hard to detect, shouldn't it?
I love Tomal's ROM, I was starting to hate my MDA PRO with WM5 but I love it now that his ROM is installed
Uni's are quite cheap nowadays, I just looked on eBay and the average price is between £100 and £150. I am willing to donate a large percentage of the total cost, I think I can afford about £40. Come on guys dig deep, Tomal has done so much for the Uni and there are very few active chefs left!
A moving note from Tomal. Well surely I will wait and try ur final 8. The last is always the most meaningful one!
Best Wishes! Million Thanks to you for the 7.7 as it's the rom I used for quite a few months unable finding a replacement in previous months. Now I use Darkforcesteam's
It's time to try a more powerful PPC, so many for you to choose out there these days!

It will be a pleasure for me to help Tomal, pls let me know what will be the way.
