First Post, and a Dumb Question! - General Questions and Answers

Hello all first post, long time lurker of this website.
About few months ago I found the website after doing some searches for different phones I was looking at buying. One of them was the HTC hermes. Luckilly at the time i was ready to buy the cingular 8525 came out and i am going down to pick mine up on monday.
This may come out as nerdy or geeky, but i have no clue and cant find anyone i know with one of these devices (ppc) that can verify one thing for me
"Can anyone with a mobile internet explorer, or any 3rd party browser for the ppc navigate to ... :: cough:: a website either www.worldofwarcraft.com or forums.worldofwarcraft.com"
^--Yes i play the game, i am one of the millions of mindless zombies who go pew pew, lazors!
Anyway, hope to be a long time poster and supporter of these forums, and hope to get some replies or anyone who has a spare second to verify that website for me Thanks!

You can open the site but you not going to see much. Flash and Java are not supported by the built in explorer and even NetFront (the most powerful 3rd party browser doesn't fare to well).
That site really isn't designed for mobile access.

Good to know, never have really owned one of these before, so now i know not to get my hopes up
Thanks for your time and effort, it was much appreiciated!

Coolsmartphone.com Website attack

Ok guys, you may or may not have heard of these guys, its a UK based website dedicated to Phones and PDAs, it gets some great news and has some great reviews and a good commuity, this was the first, if not one of the first sites that did a "week with the Diamond" style reviews some months ago now and before it was released to the public, anyhow enough with the history.
Firstly i make no attempt to pretend i know what im talking about, im just writing what ive read.
The other week some little ar***oles with clearly to much time on there hands manged to fiddle with the site to try and inject a virus on folks PC's, it came to a head the other day when both IE and firefox were throwing up wanings about dodgy code and some folk without AV scanners and propper security got infected. To stop the virus they did some changes and had to remove ALL of the adverts on the site, the problem is Google now list them as dangerios, which it no longer is.
So if anyone has used them, uses them or is going to use them please bare in mind that firstly financially the website isnt going to be in a good place until google and the adverts get sorted, secondly the warning google gives you is a lot of rubbish but apparently takes up to 90 days to fix which could bury them with out support from the community
The site is now safe, apparently is appears to be an attack on a large number of websites with something to do with SQL injections but again im a numpty so best read the site to get the right info.
anyhow, the site is safe, so please continue to go there at the very least.

A Thread to praise winmo (even though it has limitations)

after a long time being here ive noticed far too many threads moaning about the ugly interface and limitations of winows mobile
so i thought id start one that encourages new members to appreciate what we have
we have a mobile operating system that lets us do more than any other. emails on the go, internet sharing, fully customisable and the feature of being able to install unsigned software and work around compatability issues. and as far as looks go its noi uglier than a pc so we really cant complain. and i still hear about comparisons to the iphone now ill be the first to admit its a prett thing but after owning three winmo devices im never going to another, just because there are more possibilties than anything available
which brings me to this community and its part, my first device was a heavily branded spv m5000 (universal) and i really wasnt interested in flashing it or downloading because i didnt know about this community. then i got a kaiser and signed up for xda devs and have never seen so much appreciation for a mobile operating system and its features. in fact the only hangup i had was xda didnt cater for non htc devices, this was a bit of a niggle when i got the omnia. but ive still been welcomed and also decided to create a forum in the same manner as xda that caters for all winmo devices (see my sig)
so basically lets stop telling people what we think we should have and be greatful that we have the best mobile operating system available that seems to get better along the way with communities such as this one
cheers j
nb i know it seems a bit pointless posting a new topic about windows mobiles advantages but its better than another thread wishing it looked like an iphone
except windows mobile is dying and developement is drying up. Not only has the iphone outsold all wm devices worldwide but it actually has MORE apps now and more active development.
I too love WM and detest the limitations of the iphone, but sadly I must call a spade a spade
yeah it has just now. but development will pick up again. and i think the reason the iphone is doing so well is becauseits nice to look at. but they forget iphone has mass limitations

but most of iPhone users are not hackers like peeps in xda or generally in windows mobile devices. they just like the fact that it is easy to use and doesn`t even realize it`s fails etc. I just wish that wm7 will bring those iphone users to us.
when peopolemfinally reaslise the iphones limtitations then they should come by them selves. if theyre r worried about interface. ifonz, but see we have the option of a pretty shortcut menu or pc looking interface ythey get the one and only that one
doubt very much iphone ipod touch got more apps then windows mobile
if people google <insert program name> pocketpc there are always hits
piles of freeware progs and games
but granted it's easier for people who pref not to use
google to find applications in app store

Well, that is also so true, but it would be good if Windows Mobile would be as easy to use in the beginning like iPhone is. It took me time to get inside WinMo and now I love it, but iPhone is easy-to-use instantly or maybe this is just me
but the full customization is Windows Mobile`s greatest side and iPhone can`t compete on that side God I still wish that we had something like iTunes Store for Windows Mobile provided by xda

care to explain how you can change the icons of the apps displayed when you Start > Programs or Start > Settings
i myself dont kno but after flashing hyperdragonsr rom onto my old kaiser theyre different so we know it possible
at the end of the day if winmo was so easy to set up and just use xda devs would be replaced with apps to be bought from microsoft for a fee then like apple sdks would have to be bought
although apps on appstore are free. well some of them developers still have to pay for the right to develop. winmno rules
and another note the whole taking time to set up winmo to be the you like it, thats what customisation is all about, and the fact that we delve so deep is the reason this haven exists
Yeah I agree about taking winmo to where I want is that loved customization side of it.
but for casual users it is like dancing on the graves and then they go and buy iPhone which a monkey can use -.-" but winmo still pwns it. no matter of what.
One other important aspect that is not being mentioned is that fact that the iphone had great advertising. The whooped and hollered it up and every one wanted one. I have friends who have the iphone and after a period of time they want more but due to no customization they can't. They are then jealous of my WM Device. Granted MS sucks a lot, because it appears they don't listen to what people want, but to me that is a great thing. Because of that we have XDA-Dev and all the wonderful programs. If it was up to me, keep is simple Microsoft and let the community build on it. The other fact is I hate (did I already say hate) itunes. AAC is a great format but the limitations of only being able to play on certain devices and having to sync with your computer and stuff. To much hassle and not enough freedom. My iphone friends agree, now that they see how quickly I can sync, move data and upload/download what I want as opposed to what I'm being told I can.
Just my two cents.
Let the flaming begin!!!

yeah, Apple`s advertising sure beats wm devices ad`s. haven`t seen a single Diamond / Touch Pro ad and I see atleast three iPhone adverts in a day at tv.
guess thats because apple is iphone and virsa versa
where wm is a os that anybody can make phones using
so should htc make adds for a ms product or
should ms make adds for a htc product ?
HTC should advertise their devices I wonder what would be results if Diamond would be as advertised as iPhone :s
Thanks for starting this thread. There is so much talk about how terrible winmo is, but personally I think its great. Sure out of the box it isn't the most user friendly device, but you can customize your phone however you want with a large array of diffent programs that allow for 'prettier' graphics and a much more user friendly interface. Its too bad development is slowing down, but I understand why. I just hope that WM7 can step up the ms game and get people interested again.
One more thing. I have a friend with a 3G iPhone. He is so die hard about it and is convinced everything else is so far inferior. Well, the other day I showed him the customization of my phone, dual booting android, and smoked him in download and internet speeds and suddenly he didn't seem so sure about his iPhone. He thought active sync was the coolest thing, I had to remind him that this was present on winmo phones for many years and is not an iphone development. I think a big issue is advertising, smart phones and ppcs are NEVER advertised on television. You may see ads for an Instinct or a Razor, but never for a Vogue, Kaiser, Diamond etc.
Anyhow, great thread. Winmo rocks.
of course it does because as we kno its has limitations but because of forums like this thre not a lot. and less work than symbian
Again, How is WM More customizable than the other platforms??
Custom Roms (Treo's and iPhone)
3rd party apps (Symbian, Treo, iPhone)
Ability to run Unsigned Code (All three again)
MS is as evil as any other company.
Flashing custom Roms(CID unlock/Hard SPL) seems easy to you because of hard work of folks here.
And should i remind you that MS/HTC haave in the past tried to shut this site down???
I hate to break it to alot of you guys, but the sub culture of the jailbroken iPhone community is much more in depth and techy than many of you think.
Windows Mobile is still my preferred OS mainly because I've been using it for so long, but I do own an iPhone 3G. Just like I've been ripping apart my WM phones for awhile with the information received here, so do I with my iPhone and it's batch of web sites. You'd be amazed at some of the stuff they've got going. Full customization of every aspect of the phones graphics, a video recorder that shoots ultra clear video (this, after years of suffering with my HTC camera software), a wealth of Apple-unapproved third party apps, system tweaks (like Safari Mobile tweaks that allow us to download, copy and paste, etc.), and more.
I do and always will love Windows Mobile, but we HAVE to remember that most of us hated WM right out of the box, otherwise we wouldn't be here. Likewise, my iPhone failed to interest me much when I first got it, yet the current generation of Jailbreaking has really opened it up.
The grass is green on both sides of the fence. I used to bash the iPhone and it's users just like everybody else, but now that I speak from experience I have come to see that the two OS's are much more alike than we realize.
The way I see it, there is no reason for me to be blindly loyal to one OS. When I started buying WM devices, I didn't sign up for some strange Microsoft regime, and likewise for Apple. We can have both, and use them as the mood strikes us.
EDIT: Oh, and don't even get me started on the touch screens...we really need some capacitive love on WM touch screens...

such unprofessionalism

In an effort to try to bring this to the attention of as many WM users as possible. I've already posted this thread to mobilitysite,ppcgeeks.com,WMexperts. So anyway I've noticed this from a few companies so I thought I would bring it up now, especially since the beejive im review for iPhone article doesnt have the comment board for it enabled so ill post my comment about it and more in a thread anyway, why the h*** would a software developer stop developing an IM program that could have such potential and leaving it buggy to the point that its nearly unusable (i cant even login without it crashing)? This is what they did to the windows mobile version and i think its really unfair; all the while the iPhone version is nice and complete and stable, how dare they do this?desgraciados!! and yeah ive already sent them an email with my piece of mind. I've also noticed this with vonage there is an iPhone and BB app for it but, no winmo version. I'm sick of these software developers leaving winmo out in the dust it is so unprofessional.Luckily for wm phones skype is better, and cheaper than vonage so this isn't an issue. any thoughts?

Well my first thought would be that this should be in another forum, not the Development and Hacking forum. Off Topic or General Discussion maybe..
To answer your question, they may have decided to stop development in favor of the iPhone version for some financial reason. Maybe they're getting more money from the iPhone App Store then they were for Windows Mobile. Also judging from the amount of applications for the iPhone, I'm assuming it's easier to develop an application for that platform. Windows Mobile on the other hand is considerably more difficult(again.. an assumption).
They could have ceased development for any number of reasons but in the end it is entirely up to the developer regardless of what the user base may think or want.
Sorry to say it but they really were perfectly within their right, as much as it sucks..
My suggestion: Stop the web-wide rant and try another Mobile Messaging client. I recommend Slick.
Moved as not software release.
& i second Slick
although i really like slick, i dont use it because it doesnt have facebook capabilities. I use palringo, but dont like it. Are there any others out there that do facebook, msn and icq?
I would use that if it had facebook and myspace integration nimbuzz im has this but I don't use that either because it kicks my internet down to 1x and keeps it there regardless of where I am. ironically microsoft makes apps for all other platforms too for example bing
More importantly than anything else, please learn how to type properly on an Internet forum instead of going into one long, un-ending sentence, without proper capitalisations. Your post nearly gave me a headache.
Secondly, you cant call it unprofessionalism. It's upto the developer. If they want to develop it, they will. If they don't then it's not something you can beat them on the head with. You could try requesting them to develop it; possibly even show them some gratuity but not demand it from them.
Honestly, I think you going around the internet across all those forums you mentioned, posting that paragraph of a sentence, is more unprofessional than anything else here.
Stop creating threads for absolutely no reason and mucking up this place.

Maybe because the demand of iPhone is higher.
And just like the earlier poster said (I just read it now), you are more un-professional then they (software developers) are. Do you have any idea what being professional is?

SlingPlayer Mobile now available for Android

One of the last items that I missed from the conversion from WM was a slingmedia player.
It was released today (tonight actually).
Of course, I have the older slingplayer (AV model) which is not 100% supported, but it is good enough until my new Solo arrives.
Even using an older not quite supported slingbox, the player is much much easier to use than the WM ever was.
SlingPlayer For Android
Awesome
I have used Slingplayer mobile on WM and iPhone and the Android flavor is by far the best. The integration that they have built in to allow easy use of all of the functionality you would have right in your own living room. Good Work Sling!
The site says sling classic not officially supported but may work. Is this app still have the 24hr return policy as the rest of the app store. I don't want to waste $30.
Sent from Droid Incredible using TapaTalk
I downloaded it last night to test it with my Slingbox AV (older "unsupported" model) on my rooted Incredible. It works, for anyone who was wondering. Over EvDO rA, the picture was good, but the audio was kind of choppy. Some people have guessed that the buffering is handled differently in the new version, which might explain the audio issue. One thing that's completely different in the Android version (I came from WM too) is that there is no way to adjust the streaming settings (or even view the statistics for that matter). I'm going to dig into the config files a little and see if anything can be manually tweaked.
So, for anyone who's wondering... the Android version of SlingPlayer WILL work with a Slingbox AV, but it's not necessarily great.
I am using the slingbox AV myself until the Solo shows up. I got pretty good results last night on EVDO rev/A. After changing channels it would settle down pretty quickly.
On WiFi it work much better of course...
The method of changing and selecting channels is much easier than the WM verison. Even accessing some of the more obscure buttons is easy with this interface.
some of the features don't work with the older slingbox, but I didn't find anything that I had to have that I could not do with it.
I bought it. It is ok but not worth the $30 so I uninstalled. I better get my refund.
Man, figures is would be now that I'm w/o cable. I'm moving in a week.

Download Sling Mobile from xxxx
I have Slingbox Av which seems to work pretty good with this mobile App. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that could save them lots of money. I subscribe to a website called xxxx. They have lots of paid apps that you can download right to your phone. Anyway for $10 a year you can download as many paid apps as you want. They just updated there listing last night and Slingplayer is available to download. Its alot cheaper to get it from xxxx and you get lots of other paid apps to go along with it.

Which is the same a stealing since they are not legal copies of the apps and the original authors are not paid for their work, time and expense of publishing and development.
Probably true about that website so then just go torrent it for free if you don't care about paying for it. The news had a story about movie sites like that which are run by organized crime and the movie studios are mad. Personally I think sling is doing it to themselves by charging too much and also making winmo converts pay again for the same app, along with dropping support for the sling classic customers. They are getting greedy and people are revolting.

Greedy?
I suppose they have developers that work for free on a project that has taken more than a year to complete. Do you work for free? I don't.
The droid version of the player is significantly better than the WinMo version ever was and much more usable. Many of the operations work just fine with Slingbox AV even though it is not fully supported.
As for dropping support for older technologies, gee time does move on. It is not that uncommon that new technologies come along that no longer support older hardware. It happens.. And it is not like they have not been talking about new technologies not supporting the older boxes now for years.
They do provide an upgrade discount for registered users of the older boxes to get newer ones. If they were greedy they would not offer that.
If their users think the price is too high, they won't buy. If sales are slow Slingmedia will do what most companies do when products are not moving.
Promoting theft is not cool, whether using a torrent or a hack site. Saying it is okay because the a product is overpriced is not an excuse.
Should I go sit in time out now for voicing my opinion of a greedy company.
What if MS made you buy office 2010 because you have win7 but Vista users could still use office 2007? I bought a license and am not buying another.

[Discussion] - HTCLinkify and what it means to you!

I made this thread so people can discuss the addition to HCTLinkify and how it affects you and why it came into existance.
Background:
Apple has a patent on the way Sense (possibly Android 4.0) handles links on screen and how the user interacts with the touch input. Instead of trying to expalin the whole patent dispute I will let you read more HERE
The patent in question is HERE
This is also the reason the delayed Shipping of the HTC One X and the Evo 4G LTE.
Current situation:
HTC has circumvented the patent dispute with the use of HTCLiunkify which simply changes the way it handles the onscreen links. This has caused concern for some users because they feel functionality has been degraded. This is debateble.
My delimna:
Some, handfull of users, are asking me to remove this work around from my ROM and violate apples patended "link" technoilogy. I state that if HTC and Google, Sprint and ATT can be sued so cant I. Maybe this is an unreliatic fear but none the less quite possible.
My Answer: Im not removing at this time but may consider it in the future. ITs functioning the way HTC / ATT intended.
DISCUSS!
Talk about why Apple sucks or you feel this was a good ruling by the courts. Give me a valid reason to take this out of the ROM and risk Apple's wrath (Albiet prolly unrealistic).
More importantly tell me if it even affects you?
Edit...hope this stop discussion in ur thread....see its open again...

Yeah, I didint want my thread to get embattled with the apple hatred / why wont you change this debate.
I personally can't stand the half-ass change HTC implemented. When I was running your ROM, I spent a few hours trying to remove it.
The way it's supposed to work is when you click a link to YouTube, Google Play, Google+, etc., it's supposed to prompt you to use the app. If they can no longer prompt because of the lawsuit, they should just redirect the link to the app instead of the browser. Why would anyone want otherwise??
Here's a good example of how stupid it is. When I watch YouTube videos, it's usually from people emailing me a link, sharing it on Google+ or being embedded/linked in a web page. I seldom ever launch the YouTube app to view a video. With their implementation, the YouTube app is virtually useless.
Now, why does your ROM have to have it, but mine doesn't? Mine's obviously based on the Rogers RUU which never implemented the workaround because they didn't have to. But if you successfully removed all AT&T references, we would be left with virtually identical ROMs with different bases. Since your ROM isn't specifically made for US residents, why would that not be ok?
Anyways, discuss
Is there a way to create a flashable mod to remove it so that the user takes responsibility and not the rom developer?

Aren't you technically breaking copyright by modifying HTC's software anyway?
Unless somewhere they state that their Sense stuff is free to modify. They provide the source so that people can work use that for open-source AOSP. Sense, I believe (I could be wrong) is NOT open source.

Its not open source but HTC has differnt policies than Apple.
Ive never seen HTC Threaten to sue someoen.. Well once.. but that was because unreleased code was being released (IE LEaked ROMS for devices that were not even on the market yet). But other than that they given the "unofficial" greent light to making modifications to there product and distibute
We are called the "enthusiast community" and help sell there product. This is why HTC has created HTCDev.com. Specifically to unlock the pohones for the purpose of custom built ROMS / Mods, etc, no?
I am also part of HTC Elevate (elevate.htc.com <- Private boys club for HTC developers and vendors and HTC Staff to dicsuss HTC Products, give input, request changes to products) and will try to seek clarification. But HTC and Apple are two differnt animals all together.
If Apple opened up the bootloaders on iCrap devices I would agree with your point but honestly... Two differnt animals we are talking about.
Once the above issue occrued (releaseing unreleased code) HTC Made a statement at that time that it was ok to re-release the code as long as it was normally publicly available... IE Not Leaked code and definetlay not leaked for device that were not even on the market yet.
Search Google / XDA for this word "conflipper" You will understand then...
Also, I want to point out...
This is about Apple, not HTC. If HTC opens a lawsuit with me for making Custom ROMS then I am pretty sure all of XDA woudl be shut down, etc etc etc...
So lets not derail the Apple issue with HTC...
Its an Apple to Oranges comparison (Get it, Apple, gett it?)

It's a little different, but I remember HTC asking the developers of Launcher Pro to remove their "HTC-like" flip clock from their launcher. I don't think they're bothered with all of the other flip clock developers since though since it might just have been a momentary lapse of judgement, or a rogue power-tripping HTC employee. Just wanted to point out that there is a little bit of history between HTC and developers.

That is a dieffernt case though... But once again... This is not about HTC suing anyone, its about Apple.
Lets keep the discussion on Apple being the douceh bags, not HTC.
Me and a friend were thinking. Say for example when you go buy your phone. You pay an extra 20 bucks for the apple tech. Just a thought. And yes I understand that it still is an imperfect plan but everybody wins. We as consumers get what we want and apple gets there money for there code.
Edit
Hey I don't like to support apple either. But this whole mess hurts everybody including apple. Apple looks like a big jackass for suing over something so stupid and all the rest of the cellphone makers have to scramble to fix this while all of their product sits in the ports.

Never ever support Crapple products.

Completely agree. I would prefer the links just opening directly w/in the apps, even if I dont get the luxury of a prompt. the apps are far better - and intended - for viewing the content that many of these links are referring to. I dont want XDA, YouTube, Facebook, Groupon, etc. all opening up my browser and viewing what is often a 'desktop' site as directed by the link. If I want that, I can just copy/paste the link into my browser, but I'd nearly always prefer that a link automatically went directly into the associated app. i'd support pretty much any method available for getting a damn link to open in an app that I already have on my phone and, therefore, presumably would rather use over the web version of the site. I mean, why else would the user have apps? To me, this is a prime example of where patent laws have just gone too far.

Actually this is a feasible busniess model! Did you know that Google has to pay Microsoft every time an Android phone is activcated due to patentes used by Google in the Android OS.
Microsoft was smart about it. Apple is just plain ****ing greedy. How many 12 year old Asian boys does it take to make an iPod.... Ask Apple they can tell you.
Google it... Goole everything I say. Its all true.

Well, the point was originally raised to ask "Where do we draw the line?".
I'm sure Cyanogenmod will never have to worry about Apple, so why should we/you?
