Configure Unlocked Universal for USA Cingular Medianet - General Topics

I recently purchased an HTC Universal (my version: O2 XDA Exec--what can I say; I like black), and would like to configure it so that I can access Cingular's MediaNet service here in the U.S. I tried to follow the procedure for other similar phones, but as the Universal doesn't have exactly the same layout of connection options and so forth, I failed miserably.
Has anyone attempted to do this, and if so, how did you get it to work? I've gone as far as setting up the basic GPRS information, but I can't find any way to access a proxy server on the device. Any advice from anyone?

HTC Tytn / Hermes - Blackberry Connect Client

If anyone is interested in getting Blackberry Connect working on their Hermes / Tytn / etc, take a look at:
http://www.sems.org/entry.asp?ENTRY_ID=162
It works nicely... I tested it with both BES and BIS.
would love to try this out, but the second link doesnt work.
They must have changed the link. I'll dig up the page I found it from.
It looks like they are temporarily putting the files to the link I put up. I updated the post, go to:
http://support.vodafone.de/index_l3_2z.html and download it under VPA Compact II, Desktop Manager 2.1 für VPA compact II (13,7 MB), it is the same thing.
Thanks for the link. One more thing, will this only work on vodafone, or can I use it on TMO in the U.S.?
I tried to use it for Cingular but it says Blocked - Radio in use. Any suggestions?
I tried to use it on T-mo usa. It registered fine and t-mo saw the new pin, but T-Mo won't let me change my handheld. I've been running into this trouble recently with T-Mo. I'm guessing they are blocking all non-blackberry devices or not authorized by T-mo USA to register on their network.
Ok got it setup but I get a conflict from my phone trying to connect to wap.cingular and when signed on I dont get my e-mails throuhg balckberry.net.
Is there any way that both can coexist on this phone happily?
Can anyone confirm the Vodafone Blackberry solution works for Tytn ? Tmobile USA with BES server? That's the only condition that I will go with Tytn. Thanks.

Did you figure out how to run BBC with the TyTn? I am new to the TyTn and I have the "Blocked - Radio in Use" problem. My UTMS symbol does show something is continuously connecting to network, but so far I cannot find the program.
Thanks in advance

Change the Band to GSM only. BB Connect does not work over UMTS (..yet).
I have BB connect working fine via UMTS and GPRS - I dont have a strong enough signal at my house to get UMTS / 3G, but when I get closer to town the TyTn automatically switches to UMTS / 3G and BB still works fine.
I am using a HTC Rom with a Vodafone blackberry enabled account and synced to the BlackBerry Exchange server
If it says Radio in use that mean that you probably have another program that's actively using the gprs connection (i.e. Direct Push)
I'm also using the tytn with a Tmobile US sim.
I dont know what you guys are talking about when you say you get a "New Pin detected" Message.
When I go to BB Webclient through tmobile.com, it shows my old pin number in there. And I cant change it.
Do you actually have to setup a webclient account, or it's supposed to work as long as you are provisioned for blackberry.net?

BBConnect + ActiveSync Direct Push coexistence
Hi -
I've got BBConnect v4.x on a Tilt/Tytn II, partly coexisting with ActiveSync Direct Push. This is using a T-Mobile SIM, subscribed to the BlackBerry Enterprise plan (unlimited data, plus access to BES gateway).
I say "partly coexisting" because typically either ActiveSync is getting direct push of new items or BBConnect is actually connected to the company BES. When ActiveSync is "winning", BBconnect typically shows "blocked" (and may say "radio in use"). When BBconnect is "winning", the phone will report that it can't "dial" its data connection.
But sometimes both are working simultaneously...
What is the magic incantation so that they will start up in the right order and both work at the same time?
Many thanks,
Jay

Treo 750, IE has cinguar proxy hard coded in reg

Hey all. I just wanted to give you a heads up. I started a thread on Hofo a day ago. There are actually two about this topic now.
Appearently Cingular had the wireless.cingular.com proxy set on IE. It's in the registry, not in the connection profile. The default connection profile is still wap.cingular without the proxy, but IE will use the proxy.
I assume they did this so that IE could access http://device.home/ the Media Net site, which you need the proxy to access. They did something else to make IE really work right with Media Net, so that's good, but you can't disable the proxy.
This has a few ramifications:
1) IE is slower due to the proxy.
2) The proxy may compress images.
3) You can't access the internet from IE using a Wifi card or if you change your access point to isp.cingular
I started deleting IE connection settings in the registry and managed to disable it. I screwed up the WAP settings in the process. So I have to isolate the registry setting(s) that are specific to this proxy.
It's something we should all do (disable the proxy.) You can still acess it by changing to the MediaNet connection profile should you want to later, but trust me you don't want the proxy set all of the time in IE.
Unfortunatley IE's settings don't have access to edit the proxy setting in IE, it's in the registry only. At least so far I haven't found a setting.
I'll keep you posted. My Treo 750 is appearently defective and I'm working on getting it swapped, so I'm going to be tied up with solving this for at least a day.
Here are two of the threads:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8553147
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1085384
RF9, just like I posted on HowardForums, please keep us all posted.
Thanks!
I isolated it. To disable the cingular proxy setting in IE:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings]
The default setting (that uses the proxy) is:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000
Change it to:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000001
Or simply delete it. It's more of the fact that if it's there and =0 it's used. if it's missing it's not used. But changing it to =1 will also make it disable. This way you can simply change the value back without re-adding the seting back in.
Full details are in my post here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8555248#post8555248
I will attempt to .cab an .xml file that will allow you to import the change without a registry editor.
Is this key there right after a hard reset or does it only appear *after* the SIM is installed and the device is turned on?

I'm really not sure at this point.
I finally got this registry edit (or "Hack" if you prefer) in to a .cab file that you can download and install without ever installing a registry editor.
It's perfectly safe to use. There are two cab files.
1) To disable the existing proxy server setting
2) To restore the proxy server setting back to the default state.
All it does is change the existing registry value from 0 to 1.
Get it here:
http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/disableproxy/index.shtml#Download:
Download the two .CAB files to your Treo 750. Just click on it to install it like you would any other .CAB file.
To verify that it's installed. Try to browse to http://device.home/ . If you can get to it the proxy is enabled. If yoiu can't, it's (most likely) disabled.
If you use isp.cingular or a wifi card, of course it will only work if it's disabled.

I just verified. These settings are NOT there before the SIM is inserted. Only after the SIM is registered (SIM inserted, and phone turned on) do those settings become enabled.
Good catch. So it's not hard-coded. It's a carrier preference. I would assume that if I put a non-cingular SIM in the phone this setting would disappear. Palm does specified configuration based on the SIM inserted on thier Palm OS line, I assume they've done this on WM5.
I've been through the MSDN documentation and there's a whole big section devoted to carrier provisioning which is what this is.

Hey,
I'd like to know if there is a solution to give the PIE a special proxy setting via the registry.
Due to some restrictions i am forced not to make general proxy settings in the connection manager, but i want the PIE to route via an proxy. Since PIE doesn't provide a proxy setting within the program i'm wondering, if there is the possibility to do so in the registry....
anyone know how to copy ROM files?? I found a DLL and registry entries for "PorkPie.dll" in the \Windows folder that I think is responsible for the cingular proxy hard coding and other customizations.
RF9, I noticed your Fido logo in your profile... Have you managed to get IE to work with a Fido SIM using this method?
Pls help : Unlocked Treo750 - Not able to view websites
Hi - I bought unlocked Cingular treo750 from US and now using in India. Have setup my ISP and using the Internet. I can now download my emails, use Pocket MSN but unfortunately not able to see any website on IE. It keeps says "Locating" to any kind of website I want to view.
The problem is only on viewing websites. IMAP email and Pocket MSN works perfect therefore I presume the connection is perfect.
Could you please help me on this.
After some time - The message appears "Page can not be downloaded as the connection was lost..."
Thanks very much.

Treo 750 Proxy Disable
Hi RF9
I have been following your thread on getting a treo 750w from Cingular to work on the Fido network. I have tried to change the registry settings as you have described:
- <wap-provisioningdoc>
- <characteristic type="Registry">
- <characteristic type="HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings">
<parm name="EnableAutoDetect" value="1" datatype="integer" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
I got the download, but I am afraid I am not familiar enough to know how to install the changes on my phones software. Could you please do a more step by step explanation for me (us). Everything works on my Fido phone except when I go to a web page I get: "connecting" "locating" and then "page cannot be displayed".
Many thanks for your help. Ian

Enquiring Minds
Please forgive my lack of technical savy; I am really struggling to learn all of this stuff...so my questions might seem a bit "stupid"... (it's just my old age showing!
Could this proxy thing be causing my problems in accessing bank of america's website? I was able to do so just fine on my old Treo 680, nad my AT&T Tilt (I hated that phone!), but on my 750 with WM6, I keep receiving a message that says "For security reasons, your device can't access Mobile Banking" I also cannot access other banking sites as well.
If so, will making these changes cause other issues?
Thanks for your patience and information. You folks here are the best!

Tom, I just tried www.bankofamerica.com and I got into it fine. So this does not seem to be the problem.

Thanks for the reply!
Are you using an AT&T branded 750 with the WM6 upgrade, or a generic or other branded 750? I have the AT&T branded one.
Thanks again for your reply!

Yes, I have the at&t branded with the official WM6 upgrade also. I do have the at&t CapPackage removed per the instructions on this site but all the MediaNet dB is intact.
Cap Package?
I have not heard about that one? Can you elaborate, or point me in the rigt direction? Thansk!
Tom
RF9, this is very similar to what I'm experiencing, but when I go to "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi on\Internet Settings" the EnableAutoDetect value is already set to 1.
I have the AT&T Tilt, which came with WM6.
Here's my problem thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352064

Hi to All;
Im sorry if im posting this email on a wrong thread. My apologies am not very familiar with this type of threads. I would like to ask for any assistance on my Mobile fone. I bought a Treo 750 AT&T from a friend who works in the States who brought his mobile fone here in the Philippines. I am now using the Treo 750 here in the philippines using a local network provider. I can send sms using the local network but I can't seem to connect to the internet and can't even send an MMS. Ive have tried hopelessly but there would always b e a promp which says" Connecting to : AT&T , connecting to GPRS,3G.." and it can't connect...I also tried to access yahoo and internet explorer but the same thing, could'nt access as well. I tried to ask assistance from the network's wireless center but they said that they could not help me on this problem either. I am no left with an expensive mobile phone with a lot of features, but couldn't use them. I hope somebody can help me with this type of problem.
Best regards,

Blackberry Connect on Cingular Treo 750, successful anyone ?

Hi
Did anyone figure out why BB Connect is not working on the Cingular Treo 750 ? I have downloaded the client and the desktop app. and I am not able to make it work. Yes, my account has been provisioned w/ Blackberry capabilities. Yes, I have read all possible threads about this, including the ones for the cingular 8525 (BTW, a colleague of mine w/ 8525, same plan as me, works w/ BBC just fine, this is why I believe it is a Treo)
Now, here's what I get:
- BB Connect Desktop: when trying to connect to the BES server (4.1 w/ Lotus Notes), in the PIN field I get "Unknown type"; my BES guys here weren't able to give me any reasons for that, logs look clean etc.
- on the Treo: the BBConnect client shows as stopped, comes back to this status after attempting to start it. Does that no matter if I am connected or not to the Internet. Yes, I have disabled the proxy setting for Cingular Internet. I tried also both connectivity options, the built-in one (wap....) and also isp... with the same results.
Anyone w/ more clues for this
TIA,
HC
I've gotten a bit further, but still not working
I have pretty much the same setup as above ... though I am now running the vodafone ROM instead of the cingular. Also, for reference, my BBConnect software is version 4.0.0.62.
My results are that I can get the Status screen to display "Service: Data Tunnel Available" and at the same time on the Identity screen I get an IP address in the 10.x.x.x range, but my PIN still stays at "Pending" no matter what I have tried.
Does anyone know how the PIN is generated for BBConnect? Is it just a hash from the IMEI or an IMEI/SIM hash?
Hi,
Thanks for pointing out the version, I missed that . On my Treo I have on Settings -> Blackberry -> about: Blackberry version: 2.1.2.31, Transport Version: <nothing here>, System Version: 228.58.98.115, Device Type: Palm_Treo_750-GPRS
My BBConnect Desktop for Windows Mobile is: 2.1.1.18
They are both from the BBCVoda.zip archive circulating the forums.
Anyone w/ a hint ?
tsawyer, you are more advanced than me, I see that you have the Data tunnel available and an IP address. Try to use the BBC Desktop for Win Mobile instead of the BBConnect. Where did you get that piece of software, v 4.0.0.62 anyway ?
TIA,
HC
BBC Desktop and v4 BBConnect
I've tried the BBConnect Desktop for WM and I had the same results ... Pin shows "Unknown type" and trying to connect to the device results in a "PIN Code = 0" error, presumably because the device has not generated it's own pin number yet.
I received the BBCv4 software directly from RIM, which had been distributed as part of their beta program. Unfortunately, I was not able to be part of the actual beta program, and this have no feedback from RIM on this issue.

Cingular MEdia Net issues

I got the S710, and love it.
However, I'd like to use MEdia Net, and a couple other programs that talk to Cingular's system (Cingular Video for instance)
I have the GPRS set to wap.cingular, and working great.
I have a proxy setup from Internet to WAP with wireless.cingular.com:80
MEdia Net does not come up at http://device.home, or http://home
I copied setting by setting from my 3125, still doesn't come up.
Anyone confirm the issue, or get it working?
XC
Media Net
Cingular does not offer the HTC S710 therefore it is not a supported handset. The way cingular works is to access the media net homepage or other cingular content you have to be using a supported device. The only way you will be able to access it is if and when cingular picks this device up you would need to flash the phone to the cingular firmware and it would work.
With that said don't count on Cingular ever picking up this device most phones never make it to the carriers in the USA.
Reg Edit Change
In another forum, I read that you could can change the reg. entry to say "blackjack" and that the Cingular Medianet would work. I think I saw it on HowardForums. Maybe Cingular checks certain reg. entires.
I just ordered my vox. How hard was it to set up the GPRS settings for cingular?

[Q] MDA Basic (HTC Opal) Debranding

Hello!
've Got an unlocked MDA Basic and are intended to change the Internet connection settings. Unfortunately, under Connections, the following is entered:
"T-Mobile Internet
This connection is configured. The connection can not be changed "
In short, T-mobile, the Rome has put together that it does not allow any changes.
What can be done here? I know already that this (non surged) in the German language is not Rome, as this unit is with us exclusively distributed by T-mobile.
So can only help a custom-Rom.
However, I can not commit, and keep getting error messages like connection error or wrong device.
Can one make a downgrade. On the device is zzt:
ROM version 1.35.112.6 GER
ROM Date: 12/11/2008
Radio receiver. 03.41.90
Two Protocols V.: 4.1.13.75a
