QTEK 9100 (WIZARD) TRASHED - What to replace it with?? HELP - General Topics

HELP.
My Qtek 9100 (Wizard) was broken in a freak car door accident. Now I need to buy a new PDA/Smartphone and with the issues I had with the Qtek it is not a slam dunk that I get the same thing again. Currently with Cingular (GSM) but might consider changing.
Uses:
1) Phone
2) e-mail (mainly 2-3 POP accounts, currently not PUSH)
3) Sync with Desktop Outlook - Contacts, emails, Calender, Tasks.
4) Internet browsing
5) Camera (bonus, but not required)
6) Picture/File storage/Games
Wizard:
Pros - Big screen, Nice keyboard layout. Expandable memory, Camera, GSM World usage.
Cons - Not that small. No external keys make Tel dialing a pain in the A-s. Telephone Reception not great and glitches during calling.
Constant "Soft" resets required.
New options seems to include:
Treo 650 (cingular)
Treo 700p (avail; for GSM yet? If not Verizon I guess)
Treo 700w (avail; for GSM yet? If not Verizon I guess)
Cingular 8125 (another Wizard)
Nokia 9300 (Never tried, but it looks cool and is avail on Cingular. Nice as a phone, but BIG.
Nokia E61 (Kind of big?)
Motorola Q (Not as high function as Treo/Wizard? Small Screen?)
Blackberry 8700 (without the actual PUSH service and only POP, maybe a waste?)
Please please send me your suggestions and Pro/Cons for each. It is really tough to have to visit 5 diff stores to look at each phone...
ALSO - Anything readically new coming soon that should make me wait a few months?

Universal: Huge Screen, Connected: BT, Wifi, Triband, IRDA, Camera
UMTS2100, WM5, Best sub-portable keyboard I've ever used, Calls, reception and PDA mode all fine by my check. PUSH and POP
Cons: Huge. But it's worth it. No external keys, but the on screen phone dialer is big enough to be actually useable.
N73: Not so big, and with a great camera (3.2MP), 3G, Symbian, TV.
New things coming out soon? Oh yes. . . .
http://www.sonamobile.com/themephones/main.asp
I can't tell you what it is, you have to click the link to believe the glory. Designed to look just like the 1960's onscreen original, and running a customised version of WM5.
To be honest, I don't know why no-one has made a slimline PADD yet. . . It's just a thin PDA with a thumb scanner, directional pad and cool display.

i wonder if there is a way to install this on a hermes,i know am well aware of the fact that it can brick the unit but what the heck is it possible?
did anyone notice this makes reference to an 8915 model?!? its been reported that att was going to have the 8900 (no camera) and 8925 (with front and back cam) .... but i wonder if they are stupid enough to market a 3rd model with only the back cam (well thats my guess anyway, would fit in their naming scheme)
you can,t brick your hermes because it wont let you install it

I'm sure you'll find elements of this rom appearing in a suitable ROM once the chefs have had a chance to work with it.

according to this article ... Kaiser do comes with 3 different model specs
http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9750809-1.html
Yes - 3 models
HTC Kaiser 100 - no camera
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=807
HTC Kaiser 110 - 2.8M camera on rear
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=808
HTC Kaiser 120 - both 2.8M camera on rear and 300K video calling camera on front
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=733
looks and feels pretty much the same as the previous version. Some quick notes:
- Plain AT&T splash screen (removed the words "test only, not for sale") suggests we're getting close to the final version. The animated 3G splash has audio this time...
- looks like same software package as previous version (e.g. Ms PacMan trial, OZ IM etc. cingular pre_midlets is still there too (had assumed the pre_ meant pre-release).
- Device Name default (in About control panel) reports 8900 this time (could have sworn it was 8925 last time). Model no (in Device info control panel) is just "Hermes".
- The annoying backlight problem (where it goes dim every 10 seconds and reverts settings in the backlight control panel) seems to be gone!
More notes later, after some usage.
Nice...!
Thanks for Share...!
After 1 day of usage, some interesting issues:
* created program shortcuts from TaskMgr, and the program links (in Start Menu) lose their icons after soft reset. Also the Messenger program link has no icon, and the link itself is broken (application cannot be found)
* sound through headphones does not work! This is a major problem. Sound plays fine through speakers, but as soon as headphones are plugged in nothing from the headset. Of course this worked in the last version.
I am suspecting a bad interaction with the few apps I installed (HTC Home plugin and HTC Audio Manager from HTC ROM) so I'm rerunning the imaging process. If not, will step back to the previous release as no sound thru headphones is a no-op (would be a very boring flight home for me without music).
No Audio Thru Headphones
reinstalled the ROM and verified that sound does not come thru any headset. I had to reinstall an older ROM to get headphones working. Bummer as the new ROM looked more polished. I especially liked the way that backlight dimming worked.
Hope AT&T gets it right soon, else I'll have to try the HTC RTM ROM.

Don't fly with Jet2.com as they made me switch off my Wizard when I was listening to mp3s via headphones even though it was in flight mode. The annoying thing was that she continued to allow 2 kids , 3 rows apart,to play on their Nintendo DS which I know were linked up wirelessly.
if you guys don,t mind me asking
can you please post how you got your hands on a kaiser
and if you happen to have an extra you want to sell please pm me i would be very much nterested in trying one out
It should be released in 3 weeks. If you can't wait, try eBay. There's one for sale there now.
OMG Your right!
I've been using this ROM for a week now and hadn't tried the headset. How do you jack that up? I wonder how long it will be for a release rom to fix it because I like the new rom, but goota have the headset jack
Buy the way where do you get the HTC RTM ROm? Thanks
must be nice to mess with one of these units and be a prick and not share where you got it from
byetheway IF THE SHOE FITS WEAR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow nice post! Im not sure why you are so upset. Your question was answered by Mlekas, we gotem on ebay, at least thats where I got mine. I think theres one on there now. Their pretty pricey though.
can someone try to rip OZ im client from this rom and put it in a cab so we can try to install a more WM6 friendly version of this software on an upgraded 8525

Which phone for me???

I currently have an nokia e61. I use it primarily for maintaining my appointments list throughout the day, adding new appointments as they are called in. This is all syncronised through an Exchange Server 2003. The exchange aspect works very well, and reliable, however, the actual 'phone' part is quite poor, dropping calls, poor transfer from 3g to 2g during calles, poor reception, and the phone having a habit of just 'going off line' and not answering any calls, while appearing to be fine.
I recently got hold of a palm 500v jsut to try it out, the phone part is excellent, however the screen, and the cut down windows mobile 6 software is woefull compared to Nokia.
Both phones have the sem resolution screen 320x240, however on the home screen of the 500v, i get very little info of much use, i get one appointment, and notice of an email (not what the emails are), on the nokia, i get two nearest appointments and two newest emails.
When i go to the emails on the E61, i get a list of ten with address, title and date, on the palm i get four all very cluttered, in the appointments i get three on the palm on the nokia i get more detail and about five or six per screen.
It seems, if i am going to realistically make the switch to a windows phone, it needs to be vga screen, a keyboard would be nice, but not essential...
Looking around for pdas with vga screens seem to be full of disapointment. You find a phone that fits the bill, like the etin x800, and find that it is full of bugs, and because of its tiny 64mb of memory is mercilessly slow.
I did for a period of time have an o2 exec, and found it a bit of a brick... When it went through one of its slow periods you could miss the phone as it got around to loading the software.
So, what out there is going to be the E61 killer?
VGA screen
Fast to use
portable without need for a wheelbarrow
good reception
Truth is out, if the Iphone supported exchange server, i would be going with that, i understand that server sync is on its way....
must be going south for nokia because all the phone issues you describe is what people have been blaming htc phones for years

Moving to what ?

I like others am getting to the point of dumping my Touch Pro on eBay and moving to something else. I've had it since September, tried almost all the tweaks / registry hacks / hard reset and starting from scratch, and the device is simply not reliable enough to use as an everyday business tool - TF3D hangs or crashes, emails are not sent / received using MS push with 3G always on, general slow response of the device (which impacts receiving calls) and a GPS system that is unusable due to the lag / freezing.
I have tried the official HTC support desk route, but they were less help than an ashtray on a motorcycle.
I must have a windows mobile device as there is some software that I use everyday and have done for a number of years that I need to keep on WinMo.
Given the recent press statement by SE that the next Xperia type device will not be manufactured by HTC (http://www.gsmarena.com/the_next_sony_ericsson_xperia_wont_be_made_by_htc-news-716.php) what devices are people moving too from the Touch Pro ?? I see the viable choices as Xperia or the Palm Treo Pro if I want to stick with a keyboard, and Omnia and Touch HD if I don't.
What have others moved over too and are there any other alternatives that I may have overlooked ?
Thanks

I just purchased the Touch Pro, after being a Treo person for a number of years. Everything I've heard about the Treo Pro has been great. It would be a step down in terms of screen real estate, but has the advantage of much easier one-handed navigation.
first off, i just want to say that i have no lag, gps works perfectly (with agps disabled) and all my emails download regularly with no problems. im using NATFs 3.2. however, it seems like you already made up ur mind. i would not recommend the omnia because of the lack of keyboard and small screen. the touch hd's screen is better for the onscreen keyboard. personally i need a physical keyboard; so if i was to move on, i'd probably go for the xperia x1a (whenever the hell they decide to release it) or samsung epix. however neither one of those devices appeal more to me than my fuze
I have heard the Omnia is a nice power house and im figuring you made up your mind but maybe your Touch Pro is defective... i have had ZERO problems with mine and it has never crashed on me and i have had it since the beginning of Nov

With the stock AT&T ROM and a few tweaks, I'm not having those issues on the Fuze. TouchFlo has never hung or crashed and I haven't had any e-mail problems with an Exchange account.
The delay in answering calls has been discussed in other threads. The GPS can be a bit flaky on the Fuze, but I've worked around that. So I'm not sure those issues you've had with the device are normal, or maybe I've just been lucky.

Thoughts on Vario IV

Hi all,
Since its now out and people have them (inc myself!) I thought I'd start a new thread with initial thoughts etc
I like the feel of the unit it feels more solid than my Vario II
I synced all my contacts and texts etc but havent used it to make calls etc yet so cant comment here but the sync was as expected
The phone itself looks great -its a shame the touch-flo is so t-mobile but thats to be expected
I'll probably buy a spare battery once im sure im happy with it (I have a spare with my vario II)
so far I've only installed tomtom 7 (athough there is co-pilot data on the SD Card??)
anywho so far happy but early days!!
J
No opera only IE installed I'll look for an opera cab!!
Are there any significant issues with the latest opera beta?
I see loads of threads relating to it
Should I get the stable build (8.5?) or use the beta?
Ok folks, I've made a small discovery. If you Hard Reset the device, it gives you CoPilot 7 AND Opera back, BUT (and here's the kicker) it gives you a different (older??) version of TouchFlo 3D.
The version I have after the hard reset is 1.2.34589.1_1813.6
What do (sensible) people have out of the box?
The main difference that I can see is that it doesn't have the Favourites (in a circle arrangement) on the far left of the TouchFlo panel and I also seem to remember it looking slightly different as well. I know T-mobile test each phone before they send them out - could they have updated the software through USB but not touched the ROM? Seems like the most likely option IMO.
In respect of the device, so far I'm very impressed with the Vario's speed.
I'm comparing it to the MDA Compact IV I had for a week last year - the extra RAM definitely seems to make a noticeable difference.
Edit:
After Hard Reset:
ROM Version: 1.69.110.8 WWE
ROM Date: 08/21/08
Radio Version: 1.02.25.19
Protocol Version: 52.33.25.17U

Just ordered mine from T Mobile today - at leat the CSR knew (without prompting) it was called the Vario IV, even if they had none in stock!
Re the CoPilot - I have been a long time user of CP6 (came with my Compact II) - is it useable? And did you specify it when ordering, or do you think its inclusion (given your hard reset) is an oversight by T-Mobile?
CoPilot Live is 7 Day Trial

What version of Opera is it?
Supplied Touch pro is:
1.2.34589.1_1813.6

Opera is Version 9.5, build 1522.
There is CAB file in the Windows folder to install Opera, when I first Hard reset the device and tried running it, it did not work. I think there's another file (registry?) that needs running to activate it but I quickly gave up and just reset the thing to see what would happen!
Does your TouchFlo have Favourites on the left of the Home tab?
Loving the phone at the moment. But...... texts i receive are with an internaional prefix, so the vario doesn't recognize who sent it.
Strange because there is no such problem with incoming calls ???
screen print
I dont think so..

Oh really? Another way of doing it is Start--Settings--System--Clear Storage.
The front screen you have is the same as mine now. When I get a chance I'll call up tech support to find out if they have an update.
I did the latter option and it worked thanks
Just Resyncing and putting on texts etc and then I'll play with co-pilot!

I have all my numbers stored in international format so my texts were being recognised but incoming calls weren't. Haven't had a chance to test properly but I think I've solved this by using Schapp's Advanced Config which allows you to change the number of digits that are matched.
As nice as the phone is, there a few things that are driving me crazy and I have a feeling I'm going to return it:
* Pressing left/right on the DPad requires you to press in exactly the right area otherwise you hit the call/home/hangup/back keys which is incredibly frustrating.
* No dedicated hardware keys to launch applications. I know you can configure double/triple clicks on the call/hangup keys but it doesn't work too well. You can't configure long presses on these keys
* Can't configure double/triple/long presses of the home or back keys
* Lack of hardware softkeys means I'm unable to use Sky Mobile (the java app) which, for some reason, doesn't work if you press the softkeys on the screen. Although I don't use this that often, it's incredibly useful to have.
I really don't like using Windows Mobile and having to rely on the touchscreen for everything as it's not really designed for finger operation alone. The hardware keys on the Wizard and Kaiser made them really easy to use but I can see I'm not going to get on with this :-( If only I hadn't smashed the screen on my Kaiser!
agree with most of your comments antlane, I will be calling tmobile to return one of my two handsets, I have to say the battery life on this phone is so poor. After a full charge took it off 6am this morning by 12 it had 30% left. It will not last a day for me.

@antlane you're a hero. I searched this forum and Google high and low before finding this answer. I've made the adjustment now (to 9 digits seems to work for me in the UK) and life is back to normal
For the purposes of being able to find this fix easily from web searching:
Problem: International Format Contact Numbers Not Recognised (in my case HTC Touch Pro/Raphael/Vario IV)
Solution: Use Schapp's Advanced Config to adjust number of digits matched (under 'phone' section).
As far as your other comments go, I too have mixed feelings about lack of hard buttons (especially for scroll, messaging and camera). But, in balance I am very impressed with TFL3D - it's really integrated well with the OS and provides functionality on top (e.g. remembering what track you were listening to before soft reset unlike WMP). It's fast and gives you the kind of look and feel that I expect from such a capable handset. Also like: keyboard, screen and soft keyboard options. Don't like: excessive T-mobile branding on TFL3D, lack of plain Opera option in programs (only WebnWalk), lack of 3.5mm headphone jack (adapter city still).
Thanks again @antlane
Thanks for that. Switching to 9 digits in advanced config, sorts it out perfectly.
How are people finding the T mobile branding ?? Its a bit pink for me so i may have to find a way to switch it back to HTC Black and grey.

While I don't doubt this fix works for the phone, why on earth should we have to resort to a third party program to get a basic feature of EVERY phone made in the last 10 years or so??
My Vario II could identify a number if it had a +447 or 07 prefix..why can't my shiny new toy??
I've been dealing with T-Mobile customer support and then the tech support team as well over the last couple of days.
So far I've been told to remove any duplicate contacts from the phone memory (there weren't any) then copy all contacts from my SIM over to the phone memory...and erase all SIM contacts when that didn't work!
The last thing they've suggested is that my SIM (which is about 8/9 years old) is not supplying enough voltage (3 volts as opposed to 5 volts of modern SIMs) so they're sending me a new SIM card tomorrow. Apparently (and it made me laugh) this is a common Windows Mobile fault!
Has anyone heard of this "fault" or is this typical tech support BS??!?
Vario IV and Parrot BT
Something else thats frustrating me is that the Vario wont pair fully with my Rythum and Blue stereo in the car.
All other HTC devices (going back to the universal) pair in such a way that contacts and call history sync with the car stereo
The vario IV does connect but wont sync
Annoying as the Object push profile is supported by the phone
I'll probably still keep the phone just use it less in car for calls

Few questions about an MDA Vario IV

Hi there,
I've just acquired a new MDA Vario IV, which I believe is also known as an HTC Raphael/Touch Pro (I think). Excellent phone, very pleased with it so far, especially since installing the FuzeBerry theme.
However, I'm having a few niggling issues with it at the moment that you might be able to help with.
1) Keyboard layout. For some reason, since installing the above mentioned theme, the keyboard layout seems to have gone wrong. When using the phone in landscape mode, writing a text, the numbers along the top give completely wrong functions, pressing 1 opens the start menu, pressing 2 gives an @, pressing 3 gives an _, and so on. Pressing Fn by itself also opens the Calendar. I'm from the UK, and have set the keyboard to UK in the settings. No difference. The small on-screen keyboard works fine.
2) The phone screen goes off quickly after answering a call. I've installed Advanced Configuration, and set "Fast sleep during call" to Disabled... but it still seems to die far too quickly.
3) Is there a way to prioritise Wifi connection over 3G connection? I have both configured, but I don't know which one the phone will use first. If my Wifi signal fails, I'd rather it didn't use 3G at all.
4) Can the "People" menu under TouchFLO 3D display all my contacts, instead of a "Favourite" list?
5) A2DP. My last two phones were an MDA Vario II, and an MDA Touch. With the Vario II, on an A2DP enabled stereo, there was quite noticable audio distortion during some points of some songs. It seemed to happen when the sound was at its "thickest", ie) lots of instruments playing, particularly at higher frequencies, it would crackle and break up a bit. I always assumed it was the stereo's fault, until now. I've bought a Bluetooth/FM transceiver, now use a different car with a different stereo, and the exact same problem has emerged at the same places in songs. Is this an HTC/Windows Mobile issue, and does anyone have a fix?
Thanks in advance for any answers.
