Cingular 8125 / MDA ? Thinking about buying it but have ?'s - General Topics

I have been a Treo 650 user with cingular for 18 months now and have been happy with it. I have experimented with lots of the software available for download and enjoyed that a lot to. I have been looking for another phone and I just found a post by treonaut on the treo web site all about the MDA. The post was very good and has my attention but still I am very new to this MDA phone and am looking for some info. On the Cingular web site i found the model 8125 and am very interested in that cell. I think the 8125 is an MDA type cell, not sure if the MDA is a particular model or a catagory type cell. Next, as with the Treo 650 there is tons of software downloads to play with and experiment. Is there any software out to do the same with for these MDA cells? In particular the 8125? If so, ware do I find it all? I have been useing the xWeather program for my Treo and would hate to have to give it up along with many other programs that I use on my Treo. Next, are the sim cards the same? Can i use one from my 650 in the 8125 type MDA cell? OK, no more questions for now, I will stop here. I would really like to buy the 8125 after reading what treonaut had to say but will not jump. Thanks for any help offered ...

To answer your questions:
1. Cingular 8125=Tmobile MDA=HTC Wizard with each having very minor modifications.
2. Tons of software are also available for download for the 8125. All that stuff you saw in my review I did with built-in software or with freebies. I also have a program that puts the weather data on my Today page. To date, I have not bought a single WM5 program. Search xda-developers in the Wizard section. Also read the very good MDA and 8125 faqs over at howardforums.com. In general any program designed for Windows Mobile 5 (WM5) and the ARM processor should work with this series of devices. So do a google search for goodies.
3. Sims remain the same. I sometimes swap sims between the MDA and the 650 without a problem.
4. Check out Amazon.com for better pricing on the 8125/MDA.

Thanks very much for the info. I will check it out and most likely get the 8125 soon.. I want to make sure I know ware to get all the extra programs and understand how to install them. I have no clue about what cables i will need to hook it to my notebook and what software i will need to use to install things. The Treo is easy to install things with the Palm one quick install program so I need to find out what to use to do these things yet. Thanks again.

Wait and buy the 8525. It is coming in few weeks
400MHz processor
HSDPA
Etc..

Just made a deal with Cingular for a new 8125 with my corporate discount for 200 bucks. I will have same number and my 450 roll over plan with the unlimited data package for the same 53 bucks a month. It was a good deal so I took it. Now to find all the tricks and goodies

Will have an T-Mobile MDA Compact tomorrow... need advice...

I'll hopefully have an MDA Compact tomorrow and I'm wondering if changing the ROM to the i-mate sim free one will be worthwhile\necessary?
I'm going to be using it on o2 UK and would like to be able to set things like GPRS up easily etc.
I've searched on here for a specific post about swapping roms but there's too many and I can't find one that gives a simple step-by-step guide... is there a way of doing it with just a few clicks... like an upgrade would be?
Good luck in finding the right Rom. BTW, doesn't the phone already come unlocked in the UK. I bought my MDA compact in Germany and flashed it to English and haven't had any problems.
I take it the ROMs aren't so easy to come across then?
To be honest, I now have it and it's fine... pretty much sim free anyhow.

Treo 750 available unlocked!

As of today Palm is selling the Treo 750 unlocked in europe, so you don't need a vodafone contract. Now my big question is, will Palm make available the rom on that phone (or an update) so that I have a clean rom on my 750v...
where did you see it available tjmvdz?
as stated on the palm website, the sale will start the 25th of Feb or something like that....but I think I would go for it earlier if it would be available
Unusually for Vodafone, the 750v has one of the cleanest WM5 ROMS I've seen on any PPC. The only bit of branding I can see is phone startup screen. So i don't think you'll gain much anyway.
I would like this ROM as it has HSDPA active in it. Would be nicer than that hack.
A
Oops, sorry! not available yet. I jumped the gun as I saw it on the Palm UK webpage.
They should ship it not only with HSDPA active, but also with an updated ROM and some other Palm improvements. For me personally I strongly hope that it will solve my reception problems when I am in roaming. It is a known and confirmed firmware problem.
mmm different websites like msmobiles.com and pocketpcthoughts.com said it was available as of today..

T-mobile MDA vario or Cingular 8125???

1-) I've been using T-mobile MDA vario for 4 months. I love it. Now, I want to buy the same phone for my sister. However, I am not sure which one to buy. Cingular 8125 or T-Mobile Mda vario. As far as I know they are pretty much the same phones, however, there might be some littlie difference that I don't know. If anyone know what the differences are please help me to choose. (differences not including the appearences of the phones)
2-) I am also not sure why Mda costs a little bit more than the 8125.(compared prices at ebay) I would appreciate if someone could explain me this point too.
ok, the reason the 8125 cost less then the MDA is because theres the 8525 out now for cingular, therefore people dont want the old stuff, they want the new stuff...whereas the MDA's successor hasnt come out in the US so MDA is the only one of its kind...now as for the differences besides the body, the device is CID and SIM locked to Cingular, but you can change that buy unlocking it...umm no other differences, besides that MDA and 8125 come in G3 and G4...

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure about the last thing you said. DO you say that MDA always comes in G3 and the 8125 comes with G4?
If not, then is there any way to determine if the phone is G3 or G4 when buying it? I mean I can find out if it is G3 or G4 if I use and see the phone, however, when buying it online I don't have an opportunity to look at IPL and SPL.
I personally would like G3, since there much less problems with it when flashing a ROM.
im saying that both devices can come in both G4 or G3...a G4 device will show an IPL/SPL similar to 2.21.0001 and a G3 will show something similar to 2.21 (notice the G3 doesn't have the trailing .0001!) and u can see this when u do a softreset on the device, the numbers will show up in the top left in red....

Yes, but if I am buying the device online, I can't check if it is G3 or G4 before I buy it, right?
im afraid not, unless you are getting it from eBay or something, you can ask the seller to check for you

Why do we have two threads started by you on this? grrr. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1197867#post1197867

I don't know if you would call my opinion more of looks as it is "functionality". But you have a MDA, so i think you could relate:
The keyboard on the MDA is by far more efficient to use than the 8125 (sorry 8125 owners). The buttons are separated and aren't merged together. The tactile buttons on the face of the device are more convenient, because they are easily accessible with the fingers. Unlike the 8125 which are small and on the four corners, the MDA has larger buttons, great for those who have small or big fingers
However, software/roms will operate the same on both devices, as roms are built for either devices.
I owned the MDA before, and I recently purchased the NEW 8525. The 8525 very much reminds me of the 8125 keyboard, as all the keyboard buttons are touching (really annoying). Also, there is no quotation key (") on the keyboard which i use during text messages when i'm quoting someone. Personally, if they could hyrbidize the MDA keyboard with the speed of the 8525 I would be one happy guy!
(please read above carefully, do not mix my comments about the 8125 with 8525)
Cingular Refurbish G3
fyi... i just got a cingular 8125 (refurbished version) off the website. it is the G3 version. not sure if they are all that way though....

Cingular 2125 or Tornado

Hey guys,
I have watched and read this forum for about 3 years, upgrading and modding my Cingular 2125 as things changed. I have ran into a bit of a problem with my phone recently and I am debating buying a new lcd and battery or just buying a "new" phone. And by new, I mean another of the same, I love this phone too much to upgrade to a new model. So my question is: I am on the Cingular/ATT network here in the U.S. and like I said, I have the Cingular 2125(Faraday). I was wondering if, in order for it to work on the same network, do I have to buy another 2125 or can I possibly buy a Tornado and thus get the WiFi? Do they all take Sim cards in the same manner? I have searched for this question but couldnt find a clear-cut answer.
Thanks in advance.
Buy a Tornado and unlock it using the unlocking software provided in this forum. Easy as pie and you'll have wifi. Also once unlocked, you'll be able to use the same sim card as you're using now.
Get a Tornado off of eBay. Search of an iMate SP5, a Qtek 8310/8300, or a Dopod (I forget the model). Qtek and Dopod are HTC's old brand names. I bought the Qtek 8310 for like $400 new several years ago. It was an awesome phone, so I understand your interest in keeping it. Both the iMate and the Qtek variations come unlocked and without any carrier bloatware. They will also work perfectly with Cingular/ATT (I know from experience).
As an aside, as much as I loved the Tornado, I don't regret upgrading to my current WM Professional phone, an HTC Touch Cruise, at all...just something to keep in mind if you don't mind spending a bit more.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Bought a new battery for mine which helped fix the power problem and the screen is a bit blurry in spots but usable, but if it gets too bad I will look for one of these other tornados that you suggested.

HTC TyTN II (Kaiser) 3g on Tmobile US network

Hi all,
Can anyone confirm that the Kaiser can fully utilize 3g data on the TMobile US 3g network? I have seen several (old) articles that pre-date the release of the Kaiser saying it may be the 'first 3g windows mobile phone available'. I have the opportunity to get an AT&T tilt from someone I know, but before I go through the process of unlocking the sim and flashing the ROM I'd like to know if it is worth my while. I've been waiting for the pharos traveler 137 to be released for a few months now but I know that Tmobile has no interest in carrying it ( I talked to a few service reps, and they just play dumb and say they've never heard of pharos or a 3g capable WM phone). So without the plan upgrade discount the phone is going to be $600, all for the luxury of using the 3g network on a phone that actually supports msexchange email.
between aardvark ( company developing ms direct push app for android), the pharos smartphone, and getting info on this TyTn II i feel like I've been doing a whole lot of waiting for a phone that has what I feel are two very basic features nowadays on other networks
Comments appreciated,

Works Good Dude!! i'm in CT, in USA and have used a kaiser with my tmobile sim, works faster
unfortunately, you get Edge only. Few PPC's have tmob 3G off the wall 1700/2100 mhz radio combo. The G1 has it, and maybe a few other New PPC's.
