Best supported HTC linux phone? - General Topics

Hello;
I'm very new to this forum. I'm thinking about purchasing a phone to use with qwest wireless and I'm wondering what is the *best supported* phone availible for my wireless phone provider? I would like to run gpe or opie and take calls/place calls and use the wireless adapter (if supported). Based on what I've read so far in the forums, it appears that the Blueangel is the best supported? Is this true? Currently, qwest is offering the HTC PPC-6700 (Apache?) model. How well does this phone work compared to the blueangel model? Any links/URLs would be much appreciated.
Thanks

P.S. Is this forum and website constantly being updated vs. the handhelds.org site (which is old)?

HTC sells Camera-less model?

I'm wondering if anyone here knows whether HTC offers non-camera variants of its [newer] cellphones. As usual, not much turns up on google as companies don't usually advertise (or even list!) such variants. Currently I own an Elfin running Onyx 2.2 firmware obtained from this forum, but soon I'll be starting work in an organization which prohibits all forms of cameras. It's a shame to have to ditch the HTC in favor of those cheap $60 trash-phones which do nothing save transceive calls and SMSes. (...and not to mention a significant inconvenience as I'll have to buy a separate pda/laptop etc.)
take it out yourself?
i saw someone asking the same thing in the raphael forums, because he has the same dilemma. said he took the camera out of his tytn ii
Cingular 3100 WM5(6.1) smartphone doesn't have a camera, instead of Cingular 3125 (the same but with camera)

Verizon PDA with Blackberry Connect?

I recently found out I have to switch to Verizon due to my work. I have been with AT&T the last couple of years and love my GSM phones. I have used several WM phones including the HTC 8525. I most recently have been using a Nokia E51 and really like the phone. Now I see that with Verizon my choices are limited for a non RIM phone that does Blackberry. I was looking at the HTC Touch Pro but have read nothing but bad reviews about battery life, and slow response. I was also looking at the Samsung Omnia but can't find any evidence that BBC works with it. Can anyone here tell me of a Verizon phone that does Blackberry Connect and they actually like the phone?
Any help would be appreciated.
I can't answer your question for you, but I will move the thread to the Q&A section, where it is likely to get more exposure.

[Q] Help me choose a new WinMo/Android phone (CDMA, to be modified for MetroPCS)

Its time for me to find a new phone. Ive gone through three first gen MotoQ over the last few years and this last one is finally starting to fall apart which is quite amazing since it was announced five years ago (if it isnt broke dont fix it, and if it breaks fix it!). I've been a MetroPCS customer going on six years now and have no intention of switching providers
Help me find a phone with the following requirements -
Android OR Windows Mobile 6+
Able to be modified for MetroPCS
A full keyboard (can be a slider, flip or front facing keyboard like the MotoQ)
Price under 200$ new or used
Some nice features to have but not required would be -
Charges through standard mini usb
Extended life batteries (or brand new original batteries) available
Some type of tethering solution (currently i do this through USB)
I don't mind if the phone is old, even a model from four years ago if it works well
I am in the San Francisco bay area (LTE is available)
I often use my MotoQ to send MMS and the Google Maps application even though the speed is very slow (perhaps because of my device?).
Three times I have paid someone to add the "foreign" ESN of my phones into the MetroPCS database so it would be a definite plus (not a requirement) if the phone had the ability to directly take over for my current MotoQ without the extra fees (electronic serial number change).
You dont have to give me all the details on how to hack the phone onto metro, if you give me a model number I will do my own homework.
My girlfriend insists on getting me a phone for my birthday. I think she is tired of seeing me carry around this ratty old phone that no one still uses.
Thanks for your suggestions
Based on all your needs, the best fit would be a Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium). It also runs Android now, as well as WM 6.1/6.5.
I have little experience with CDMA, but from what I understand most devices whether they have a good or a bad ESN can be flashed for any carrier other than the original. I haven't seen any CDMA Rhodiums for sale here on the forums, but you could always try eBay. They're pretty cheap these days too
Good Luck!
Thanks for the quick reply. I will have to look into that model more but so far it does seem to do what I wanted!
I was starting to lean towards the Moto Droid 2. Apparently it is not too difficult to get it functioning properly on MetroPCS and it has decent specs. The price for used models isnt bad and its running 2.2 android stock, with a 2.3.3 hack available

Also true, with the added benefit that if you ever move away from CDMA, you'll have a GSM radio in there too. I can only speak for the original Milestone, but it was a capable little phone at the time. They reworked the keyboard on the second one, so it seems to be much more user-friendly. I'm not sure how much luck they had with the bootloader on it though, so would pay to do some research there before you buy

[Q] HTC 8X questions for new user

Hello,
I was looking to buy an 8X and had a few questions before I do I was hoping someone could/would answer:
1. I was wondering if anyone can post suggestions of reputable retailers that sell the "HTC Windows Phone 8X Unlocked" that will work on AT&T with 4G LTE.
Please note I am looking for the official "Unlocked" version straight from HTC.
2. Is it possible to share the internet via Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/USB with the 8X to a PC or other device?
3. Can any one post highly recommended custom ROMs for the 8X?
I am coming from an older HTC HD2 using Dutty's ROMs and I am looking to see what I can do similar with the new 8X phone.
Thanks.
1. I bought it straight from Bell Aliant (Canadian AT&T). Hence, I couldn't recommend you any retailers.
2. Sure is! As far as I know, you can only do a Wifi Hotspot.
3. There's no custom ROMs for WP8. It's a Windows Phone, really not as open as Android. But really, you don't need a custom ROM. I was an Android fanboy before switching to Windows Phone. I loved the idea of customizing my phone and using the latest, fastest ROM. However, this phone is seriously the fastest phone I've ever used, without even having a custom ROM.
I bought an unlocked and unbranded Bell (Canada) 8X. It works 100% on ATT after a couple of tweaks like APN's. I believe that AT&T and Bell are the only two versions that will work with AT&T's LTE. Do some research and check out the exact model numbers before purchasing.

[Q] Buying a Firefox Os Phone

Hello,
I have been thinking about purchasing a firefox phone for testing apps for quite some time. So far I have looked at phones from three manufacturers:
1. GeeksPhone
Their Revolution is yet to be released but they haven't announced when that will be.
2. Zte Open
This seems to be the best bet, its cheap and its readily available on ebay india. The seller page mentions that it supports US 3G network? Would it work with Indian Carriers?
Thanks!
