Which Phone Have You Got? & other Basics - General Topics

How does someone find out what phone they have? there are incomplete answers here and there, but I have failed to find a definite answer.
My M1500 (R: 1.02.00, G:1337.41, D:1.11.00 WWE) looks like maybe an Andes, but It could be an Alpine from the descriptions in some posts.
I want to find out what phone I have so I can...
a) Pick a ROM to improve Camera, and strip Logo's etc. Can I Choose any ROM, or does it have to be specific to my phone, the m1500, or just the right Himalaya / Andes version?
Is there a list of ROM's or just a post here and there with links to each other, I'm sure I'll end up with an older less improved one unless there is a post that collates some of them. Do I have to unlock my SIM before I upgrade the ROM? Can someone recomend a usefull and semi up to date ROM guide maybe?
b) Unlock my phone. Do I have an old radio that needs to use the xdadev_all_unlock-v1.5.exe, or the new radio which needs the xdadev_all_unlock-v1.5.exe to unlock it. I think the older version here is not the older version the post meant, but with no details / links on it I am unsure.
I know these questions must have been asked before, but if I can't find them, then others wont either, Please help me, and others by collating the wealth of info on these threads (some are hundreds of posts long, thats no longer a usefull thread, thats a novel!) for those are just getting into XDA developing (maybe ish).
Thanks!

please help the newbie!!!!

I have a Qtek 9100 with wm5, when I start it up it reads:
Ipl 2.17.0001
Spl 2.17.0001
Gsm 02.07.10
Os 2.17.7.2
I would like to upgrade it to WM6 and maybe add some of the new features of the HTC touch. I love the wizard and refuse to give up the keyboard but would like to have some of the functionality of the touch. I can hack a pc just fine but have never messed around on a mobile before. I do not want to brick this thing. I have PHM registry editor installed on my wizard. I was hoping someone had a clear cut answer on how to upgrade my device to WM6 and install some cool apps along the way. I love reading the many posts on this great site, I have learned alot. Thanks for the reply, I have determined that I have G4 unlocked model. Now the next question that I have is do I need to upgrade my existing rom before installing a WM6 rom. If not do you have any suggestions on which WM6 rom to install?
Did you mean CID Unlocked G4? If you are not sure then look for shell tool and follow some others in G4 forum.
I checked and it is CID unlocked, so my next question is which WM6 rom should I use? Does anyone know if the new "touch" applications will work on a g4 model? I have searched through the G4 postings and I have not found anything on this.
My idea

I think NBD 7.4 is the best WM6 "touched" rom...
But I don't know if it's working on G4 wiz....

G3 and G4 have nothing different apart from the boot chip. So it should work (I may be wrong but you can safely give a try).

Don't remember who shared this, but I thought it would be appropriate here:
The members of this forum are advanced users, and they are expecting this from other members too. Thus if you don't want to lose your face in front of the other members, I suggest you try to solve your problems yourself first, and then search on this forum and even on the whole internet, and if then you still couldn't solve your problem, the link 'Post reply' or the link 'New thread' on this forum are there for you...So you will be sure that the problem you couldn't solve, isn't just something explained before and other members of this forum won't laugh at you...
The members with very high post count will not always be able to help you out in the best way...It is very easy to post hundreds of replies every day, but it's much harder to post so many useful replies! Sometimes you will see a thread becoming very long, thanks to some users willing to thank someone over hundreds of time. Of course, it is very polite to thank someone that helped you out, but you will see that all those thank you and other useless post are making it very hard for you and other members to find the posts that really will help you out of your little problem...So, an other suggestion for you is that you only post what really matters, that way, you will very soon be so popular in this forum and on any other forum that you might get famous by a lot of people and a lot of people might even remember you every time they are using their Pocket PC...wouldn't that be great??!
So, now you got a little introduction to this forum I'm sure you will find out your way and make it to the 'Search' button just on top of every page on this forum. Then, a new world will open for you, you will be able to find tons of information, more than ten or twenty thread are just on the subject what you where asking for and you will see that while you are searching, you will very soon get a little frustrated to find more than ten times exactly the same instructions to solve your problem. I am sure, very soon we will see some replies from you asking other members to just use that little search link before posting a question that was solved ten times before on this forum...
Have a nice day, we hope you will be able to help us out too if we got some problem that you might be able to solve!!

The Wiki needs to be Updated !!! But only Mods should do this!!!

Hello!
In the past days the wiki section of ROM upgrading was updated.
The method in wich you used MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe is now considered old school and not safe.
Now, for ROM upgrading, you have to use ROMUpgradeUt.exe wich you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36715&d=1176001960
The wiki explains very clearly what to do with the above archive and how to install/upgrade your Universal (Qtek 9000/SPV M5000/Dopod 900/O2 Exec/etc).
But there is something that might rise problems to new people like me.
In the Wiki (both at Radio upgrade and OS ROM upgrade) it is used a picture that shows the old MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe file.
Some users (like me) might not understand wich file to use:
the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe or the ROMUpgradeUt.exe.
Also, i think in both sections (Radio Upgrade & OS ROM upgrade) should be more informations about what the status of Flight Mode should be before beggineing the upgrade.
And also if there is necesary to take out the SIM and the SD/MMC card.
Also, i think that many people have problems to understand if the custom upgrades are suitable for their devices.
for example, the Wiki section for SIM Unlock says that the method is suitable only for HTC Universal. I think that it is not very clear if the method works for
SPV M5000/O2 Exec/Dopod 900/etc too. (personally, i know that it is suitable). When i first read this section, i thought that the method only works for Qtek 9000.
There are some things that are not mentioned in the Wiki.
Like the fact that you should first unlock your device and only after that you should mess around with the ROM.
An other fact is that the first page of the Wiki contains a link "Upgrade Bootloader to 1.2". But if you fallow the link, you find out that you will upgrade the bootloader to 1.01 and not to 1.2.
When i first saw this, i thought that someone messed around with the Wiki and made a joke.
My final sugestion is that only Mods and Trusted Senior Members Should be allowed to edit/modify the Wiki.
For example, right now, as far as i understand, there are 2 identical sections of the Wiki refering to Radio Only Upgrade:
1.http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=UNI_Radio
2.http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Radio only upgrade instructions
This is not bad. But what if someone (someone bad who bricked his device) comes and modifies the guidelines so that other users brick their devices too.
That's why i suggest that only Trusted users should be allowed to edit/modify the wiki.
I don't want to offend anybody with this thread. This is my opinion and i am open to sugestions. Please accept my apologies for my bad english. I am not an native speaker.
True enough... The Wiki needs a major update, since many new "technologies" have surfaced(for example Jwmcpwright's(did I spell that right...?) ROM does not show the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe or other files, it is one clean install package, an executable that will guide you through the upgrade), and some methods are being phased out, or have already been abandoned.
Also, other sections of the wiki could use an overhaul, maybe a guide on ROM cooking and/or building.
If only selected people could update the Wiki, it wouldnt be a Wiki any more! Would kind of defeat the point IMHO
But not everyone here has the knowledge, technical specs, details, etc to wirte concise, detailed, accurate articles. Would you like to see wildly inaccurate entries concerning integral parts of your Uni? If someone without the programming knowledge, hardware skills, etc were to follow a procedure outlined in some bogus article, and bricked his PDA, who would be responsible?
Him, because he believed an article from a well-known trusted source(XDA-Dev) without any foreknowledge?
XDA-Dev, for allowing anyone to edit the Wiki, and post bogus?
Or the poster, for posting the bogus article for whatever reason, since anyone could freely edit the Wiki?
This is a question to be considered! I say only those should be allowed to post into the Wiki who have qualified themselves in the forum as having the knowledge to write accurate and detailed articles(Mods don't get appointed for nothing, in my opinion. AND they cooked virtually all the ROMs available here, so I think they qualify for updating...), since we're talking about pretty expensive(~$1,130/555 GBP/whatever currency) and important devices here.

If people dont know what they are doing, they shouldnt mess about with such an expensive bit of hardware. I bet you trust all the articles in Wikipedia to be accurate? That is a Wiki - the whole point of a Wiki is that it contains the vast amount of knowledge from an almost infinite amount of people. The Wiki has a warning about the dangers of flashing a device with BETA roms. If an individual chooses to flash their expensive device, when they are absolutely not sure what they are doing, it is THEIR FAULT, no-one elses, and they are STUPID for doing it in the first place
I do trust articles in Wikipedia because I know that they are supervised by teams of moderators(although their presence is not so noticeable as it is here), who monitor articles, correct mistakes, and remove bogus articles. I've had articles deleted because they contained information deemed false(I've corrected the errors in my knowledge since then ), so I know what they do, and I am grateful that they do it.
All right, let everyone edit the Wiki! But then you have to have a set of moderator-supervisors to ensure there are no inaccuracies. Let's count how many active members are there with the know-how to supervise a Software-Wiki: Lt.Cmdr.Ivan; Laurentius26; Beast0898; they are the ones who can be counted on as a "patrol", Jwrightmcps can probably be called upon(but he doesn't post too often...). They have cooked ROMs that are used by many many people out there, so they probably know what they are doing.
There are people out there, who took apart their devices, until they were picking at the individual chips from the mainboard, then put it back together to have it working without a hitch. THEY know what they are doing.
Now, suppose I put up an article that says "Hey, did you know, if you do this during an update, than this when it starts up, and finally you write this into these files, your Uni will triple its speed, and will never hang, PLUS, you get to connect to secured Wifi networks(an inability shared by most ROMs available...)!". Some new user John Doe comes along, no programming skills, first ROM-upgrade, and says "Hey, this guy knows what he's doing, let's follow his advice!" BANG! 1 bricked Universal, coming right up.
Now who's to blame? Me, the site, or the new guy?
When I upgraded my Uni for the first time a month ago, I didn't know what I was doing, I was placing my $1000+ device into the hands of Jwrightmcps, cause he seemed like the sort of guy you could count on not to screw up the upgrade-guide.
But when I first came to this forum, I flamed a guy for calling the screen connector cable "Coaxial", because I knew coaxial cables as the cable you get TV on. Would you trust an article written by me, in this light? I wouldn't. And would have you trusted my articles before knowing this bit of info? I would have...
Now do you see the risks of unmoderated editing? Hope this cleared my point up a bit.
And no need to overuse capitals, it makes you seem you're flaming...

Definitely the new guy.
The site says xda-developers, not xda-newusers.
Mods does not have all the time in the world to moderate everything.
A Wiki is a wiki... it's a means to share knowledge. A wiki is always partially innaccurate. It's up to you to do more research before believing something to be true. But if you're just too gullible, then this site isn't for you.

My point exactly. If they are the only ones who may post, then there is no need for that, since only articles from trustworthy sources will be posted.

so the information that might be added to the wiki is about the windows mobile synch usb driver for Vista so RUU works again. thanks

[Q] Flashing issues

OK, heres the deal. I have a FUZE and want to flash it. As much useful information as there is on this forum, it is nearly impossible (as stated by many of the members here) to find anything in threads with 30, 50, 90 or even 300 pages. It just is not efficient. There is no good guide that has only constants (e.g., they all say you may need this version of SPL, radio, etc.). I would like some sort of UPDATED, concrete guide. I am willing to donate to whichever one of the developers handles this for me and I also think it would be hugely beneficial to the users of the forum. My hopes is that it becomes a locked thread so it cannot be polluted and it only stays a useful guide. The people on this forum are amazingly knowledgeable, probably the best on the net... There just needs to be organization and I'd really like to get that ball moving. Here is what I'd like
1) The fastest, cleanest, most stable ROM
2) The most efficient radio (I'm fine with my current signal strength, which radio does that equate to)
3) The LEAST maintenance, meaning internet settings for AT&T, proxies, settings, all the task manager junk that has to be done.
I would even take one of the cleaned up AT&T ROMS as long as it isn't as slow as a 500lb man in a 40yd dash.
I understand that creating ROMs is no easy task; However, being proficient in the business and technology world, I can bring a few things to the table. Inaccurate and disorganized information usually causes the collapse of many businesses and I feel that is the biggest downside of this forum. Just think about how hard it would be if your file cabinet of work was turned upside down and there was little to no organization? Someone from the outside trying to look for a file would have no clue where to start (e.g. looking at all of the thread names is quite overwhelming... [ROM] [ENG] [READY!|15 NOV] ROMeOS² v1.40.1 (19974.1.2.8|STABLE)). Noobs (including myself) have NO IDEA what any of that means until we start reading.
Therefore, if anyone is willing to help me get this started, I would gladly donate.
Thanks for listening, guys... I look forward to working with everyone.
Well, the first place to start is the Wiki specific to the Raphael. There you can find all the necessary info about the Raphael.
It seems you want to flash a ROM to your device. Right now there's only a handful available and you will have to try to see what best fits your needs. If you flash one, you don't like it, flash another.
If you read the Wiki you will see that you NEED to HardSPL before flashing a ROM. This is a must and I'm not sure where you're finding that it may be needed or not. Just HardSPL before you flash your ROM. And right now there's only 1 HardSPL, at least that I know of in this forum.
As for ROM naming/etc, go to the specific thread to find out more info. I understand the point about the overwheling messages that are here and many times there are just repeats of things that were answer before. However, everyone should take the time to read the sticky posts in the forum as they have very important information you need to know before you start messing with your device. I've been flashing ROMs for about a year now on my Tilt and recently move to the Fuze. A name as the one you referenced
"[ROM] [ENG] [READY!|15 NOV] ROMeOS² v1.40.1 (19974.1.2.8|STABLE", you should be able to figure most of it. It's a ROM, it's ENGlish, It's READY, release 15 Nov, and it's STABLE. The other info is specific to the person who releases it and you will find the info by reading the first 1-3 posts within the thread. What you wrote is the equivalent of reading something you don't have any idea about and you want to understand it all in the same sentence without doing some type of research. Not sure how that works.
The guys that releases these ROMs take their time to make sure all the necessary info for a specific ROM release is contain within the first 3 posts of a thread. It's the best place to gather all the info you need about a ROM.
Anyway, hope this helps you.
As has been said MANY times:
1) there is no BEST rom
2) there is no BEST radio
Each is measured subjectively based on your needs. Most of the information you need can be found in the threads related to HARDSPL, Radios, & the roms you're flashing.
Thread Closed.

List of ROMs?

Is there a list of ROMs anywhere or can could people tell me what is available? I have spent hours and hours searching the Internet, searching this forum and I have only come up with a few and I know there has to be more than what I am finding.
The main reason I want different ROM is because I don't want my Tilt to lock up with my bluetooth anymore and hopefully my sound won't disappear making me reboot to get it back. Everything else is a bonus.
So any help is appreciated before I drive myself more insane than I already am.
(and no, I don't want to know which one is the best, I will figure that out on my own )
I really doubt you've searched, because there was a recent thread attempt to list them, and you'd have known about our WIKI.
We do not give out handouts. Put in the EFFORT.
Your phone shouldn't be locking up often with the stock ROM. If it is, there's probably something wrong with it or your bluetooth device or some crummy software you've got on it.

Please do me a favor and close this, I would rather spend my days searching instead of this crap.
I flash roms more often then a Trench-coat wearing man in a70's porno I normally end up on blackstone, PDA ultimate or the vista one all three IMHO are rock soild stable and feature packed if you read the wiki which is sticked at the stop of this forum you will learn all you need to learn about unlocking the wiki also contains the links to all the patched and bug fixes as well as a huge number of add-on's
Closed, follow suggestions, read the wiki for Kaiser it has a comprehensive list of avaliable stock & cooked Roms.

What is the big deal? ......What , is he taking much needed space away from all the new 6.5 roms coming out ? Look around, things are kind of slow around here with links being taken down, chefs canceling their new 6.5 releases
This is not a "what is best thread," it merely consolidates all the chefs in one area,.........If it is tagged right, now all a noob has to do is come to rom development, type " popular roms " into search and he will come right to this page, to link and compare. No harm, could be helpful.
Don't forget ansar's roms, get the link in my signature.
Make this sticky!
Maybe add older but good ROMS like dutty's, Laurentis, etc!
I didn't expect to be flamed for making a post that would help me. If it helps me then I'm sure it would help others here on the forums.
I'm not claiming these are the best ROM's, What I did was sort the forum by number of posts and then started listing, I skipped over the threads that was old but apparently some of those ROM's are still used so I'll include those too.

your not really being flamed its just that this is rom development forum and your thread has nothing to do with that,or with even aiding in rom dev. maybe you should put this in the kaiser-general forum?
The only problem is I don't think noobs are going to use the search function in the general forum to find a popular rom list. They are going to come here, to rom dev. Yes they could just go up and down the forum threads looking at post totals for different roms, but we all know clueles noobs.
I would love for them to be able to input "popular roms " into the search function and have them be directed to a list. Or as we get the inevitalbe " what is the best rom " question, which gets asked here, more than in the Kaiser general forum " here is the list of popular roms ", " follow the links and test and compare for yourself "
Could be helpful.
Once upon a time, XDA made this thing, it was grand, it's called THE WIKI.
Where there is already an extensive ROM list.
Instead of making a new thread, update the WIKI.

And that is why the thread is not called " every rom ever written for the Kaiser " because that is in the wiki. Lets face it when the noobs come to this Kaiser forum, they are looking for the latest and the greatest, the stuff all the other kids are using.
They are not looking or willing to to filter through yesterdays news just to get the newest stuff. Don't get me wrong, Leo, Dutty, NATF, and all are legends and always will be, but they have moved on. In some cases the chefs are not even supporting their old threads that are still listed in the wiki.
We hear enough complaints as it is about all the old info a noob has to go through to get the " new stuff ".
This is kind of a thanks and props to the guys that have stayed behind and still support us, and a thanks to the ( Josh, KaiserII101, ngy ) new chefs stepping up, by moving them to the top of the " every rom available for the Kaiser" list .

Go here follow the links to the latest and the greatest and decide for yourself. Easy Answer ?
Not meaning to be a jerk with so many posts, I'm just sayin............
I've got to admit that this thread helped me find a good naked ROM, namely AthineOS. I probably would have found it in the end but who knows how long that would have taken?

and that stuff 9 times out of 10 is on the 1st or 2nd page of the kaiser forum, hence threads like these AREN'T needed.
edit: not to mention that this is the "Kaiser Rom Development forum" not a come and get it/heres your menu forum, these "kids" need to be searching/learning before they EVER think about flashing a rom. or all you get is theses spoon fed "kids" not reading/searching, bricking their phones more than they do now!!!
<soapbox>
I've been lurking XDA for quite some time, have read countless threads, and flashed numerous ROMs. I'm no chef/expert, but I'm not a n00b either. My visits to XDA are far from regular and usually involve either obtaining a new ROM or checking on the status of Android on the Kaiser. I greatly appreciate the work of everyone who cooks ROMs, administrates the forum/wiki, or just generally puts in time to help the community, and try to stay out of the way unless I have a good question or something useful to add. I use the search function and the wiki religiously. In short, I'm probably a good example of the typical XDA visitor. Here's my opinion:
@Fingerlickin: Thank you. The effort is appreciated, but I don't imagine you'll want to come back and update this every few months. If you make a new wiki page or add the popularity info to the existing ROM list, other people can update it in future. Then, you could just edit your post and make it a link to the wiki (or have the mods add the link to the FAQ) so that it comes up in forum searches.
@Travito & msd24200: You say that a more extensive list can be found elsewhere and that a post like this doesn't belong in the ROM development forum. With all due respect, I think you are missing the point. Fingerlickin didn't post a list of all ROMS, he posted something of a Top 8 list. It wasn't intended to be comprehensive.
Could he have updated the wiki instead of making a new post? Sure, but (at the time of this post) that page was last updated in January.
Could any given XDA visitor get this information on their own? Yes, but it can be confusing, frustrating, and time consuming. ROM authors and update threads change, and some of the most popular ROMs are no longer maintained.
Should this be somewhere else? I don't believe so. If I'm interested in getting a ROM, I go to where the ROM developers post them. They don't post in Kaiser General, so I don't go there for ROMs. Naturally, I wouldn't expect to find a list of popular ROMs there, either.
Frankly, I think the FAQ actually has too much info, especially since there's a wiki with all of that (and more). As for the wiki, it's not the easiest thing to navigate. For example, a search for "Kaiser" brings up a list of pages, but should I click the HTC_Kaiser link, or the Kaiser link? If I'm looking for info on Kaiser ROMs, do I choose KaiserROMs or Kaiser_ROMs? KaiserROMs directs me to see either Kaiser Cooked Roms or Kaiser Shipped Roms, the latter being a link to the Kaiser_ROMs page.
My point is simply this: Fingerlickin's post lists several of the most popular, and still updated, ROMs. This info is not available on the wiki or in the FAQ, and pertains directly to the ROMs developed and posted on this forum. It might be easier to maintain if it were on the wiki, but it might end up harder to find. It's definitely not redundant or in the wrong forum, and it IS a time saver.

Exactly all the most up to date things will be within first 2 pages and even if not then surely it's worth putting in the effort to find a ROM that you want and like, by that i mean to do a bit of research read some of the reviews flash it and then probably go somewhere else and flash untill you find the ROM that suits your needs and wishes, blah blah too many threadz with Help\Fastest ROM\Best ROM or just posted in the bloody wrong section.
Blah Blah Blah..............
msd24200 where's that cat when you need him?
DamionFury: I read it all and you have some valib point but time consuming is all part of it your flashing a UK £200ish phone............. Take some time, do some learning..... You don't need to use the search for Kaiser ROMs go through the pages of ROM Development and you can just flip & flip & flip till you find what you want???
I enjoy using my phone when it has a ROM that I like; I don't enjoy spending hours finding that ROM. I have far too many things I'd rather be doing. I spend the time finding the ROM because I believe that it's worth it, but anything that reduces the expenditure is great in my book.

Sure, but (at the time of this post) that page was last updated in January.

and again there is no point to be missing the fact is this is a rom development thread not a come and get it and here's the menu thread. THIS HAS BEEN GONE OVER AND OVER AND OVER so many times. the roms that are "hot" will always be on the first couple of pages of the forum because so many use them they don't have time to drop back to page 3. you guys that want to spoon feed should start your own website linking back to the rom threads on here then. and as far as the wiki goes it's all there and ANYONE can update the wiki at anytime.
