Request: vjokbutton feature - General Topics

I'd tried out several "task close" programs and have rounded up the 2 better ones..
1 ) vjokbuttons
2 ) phmkeys "close task"
advantages of vjokbuttons is that, u can add trailing options for the different behavior
advantages of the phmkeys close task is that, when u keep on pressing the hw button assigned to this phmkey close task, and the moment u are in today screen already, the next button press will prompt a suspend ppc dialog.. ie power down.
This phmkey has been used very extensively by me due to its ability to prompt a shutdown after all apps have been closed.
however, this nifty little program also have its disadvantages..
it does close the task window.. but as applications have secondary and tertiary windows, the phmkeys close task may cause the app to behave strangely if the task close is activated in the application secondary window..
also, it causes control panel apps to not run again if the phm task close was used to close , eg , "memory" in control panel..
I remember in wisbar, its task close button will automatic detect between the need of an "OK" click and the need for the "Close" click.
Is that possible to be included in the vjokbutton?
ie if in secondary window of app [ eg options page ] to have the vjokbutton to simulate an "ok" click instead of close? and if it detects that it is in the primary window of application, to simulate a "close task" when the assigned hw button is clicked..
and of course, when in the today screen , the vjokbutton should prompt for a suspend window for shutdown
can the above features be included in your next release? vijay555?

farbird: just a quick response for now, I need to sleep:
VJOKButt does already check every time it's pressed if the window is an "OK" or an "X", and does the necessary (ie it doesn't just close every app, it pressed ok if it needs to). Hopefully. If it doesn't, please detail the app it doesn't do this in. Not all apps respond to my emulated "OK" correctly, so it may not be 100% native.
Currently, pressing VJOkButt will close the app (if it's closable). If it takes you to the today screen, pressing it again will skip to next app. Pressing again, will close it. Continuous pressing will thus close all running apps in a cycle. Ultimately you will end up on the Today screen with no other running apps.
If you want me to, I can then implement a shutdown screen, so that a subsequent press will permit shutdown. But I provide VJEschaton for shutdown related stuff really. I'm not sure it's logical to build this into VJOkButt, but if you want, I'll think about it.

WkTask/AltTab help!

Hi all
I'm currently using WkTask and already know AltTab app, and i want to know if this is a normal issue of these two softwares:
when you are in any app, with others opened, (with assigned button) you can switch to any other without problem, and until now it's ok; but when i'm in the today screen, with all the apps minimized and try to switch/show (using the assigned button) the opened apps, i cannot, and it opens the win start menu!
Is this normal or not? I've this problem with WkTask and AltTab too!
Is there any way to open and choose the minimized apps using the button?
thanks in advance!
PS: I already tried to serarch related posts, and also to ask in concerning threads but i had no answer!
Ciao
No one can answer me??! pls
I use wktask.
I created a shortcut called "AltTab" which calles
"wktastkcmd.exe" /f
I assigned a button to this shortcut. It will allways swich you to the next task. When all task are minimized (you are on home screen) it will open the first one.
Hope that helps.

Hi dude,
thx for your tweak!!
I tried it and works, as you said! Than i realized a strange issue:
it also works, without any changes in the schortcut, but assigning to it different buttons, and exactly:
-> directly works with "OK" and "Win Menu" buttons, normal or long press
-> doesn't work with "IE" and "Mail" buttons, normal or long press
I don't know why, but these buttons have different effect on softwares!!
However, i added it to "OK" long press button and it select the minimized app in the upper bar showing me also the name just below the selectoion and by the arrows i can switch to the others one still minimized!
Thnaks for your contribution!

Closing program with hw-key, goddommit!

Im slowly going mad with Raphael, HTC didnt make this easy for me.
I only want simple things. Like, one hw-button on top panel of device, that really closes program. I mean REALLY, and EVERY TIME. Not casually, or just leave it hanging there on the background.
But no, this is a luxury I cant have. I always have to try to hit my big thumb into little X at right upper corner.
Lets have an example. Fire up File Explorer. Ok Im done with it and want to close program (by pressing nice and big hw-key, not aiming for small X). Options:
1. I press Home-button. I'm back at home screen and File Explorer running on background.
2. I press Back-button. I'm back at home screen and File Explorer running on background.
3. I press Endcall-button. I'm back at home screen and File Explorer running on background.
...Seriously, WTF??? Why do we have THREE hw-buttons in top panel of Raphael, that do exactly the same thing? And as far as I have observerd, there is no really good solutions yet for remapping these hw-keys.
All I want is:
1. Button that takes me back to Home-screen (obviously Home-button)
2. Button that changes from program to another (alt+tab, I could use Back-button for this)
3. Button that really closes program (obvious choise would be Endcall-button).
Goddommit.
The Back button is really the OK button from previous devices like the Hermes. I agree the Home button is probably useless, but I suppose it's a fast way to get to the Home screen when you're in a call, since pressing Hangup while you're in a call will... hangup the current call.
With all the RAM in the device, is there any reason to really close any apps?
AEBPlus can handle all of them, but the Back button not. Unfortunately the Home button can be handled, but after hitting it,it jumps to Todayscreen and makes the command defined in AEBPlus,so it is unusable. I want to use those 2 buttons for something different as well as some of the keys on keyboard(SMS to OK/Close). As I don't understant 3 buttons for same functions,I don't understand, why we have 2 hw-keys for entering the messaging on the keyboard.

Now that would be perfect in my eyes

WM 6.5 new UI - app close and task manager.

I've tried a bunch of new 6.5 UI roms and I am facing this problem with all of them.
1. The OK button (bottom right) does not close applications. It simply minimizes them. This is really frustrating since I dont know what apps are open until i pull up the task manager. This also drains battery life. How do i make the OK button close an app? (detailed instructions appreciated)
2. The earlier UI used to have a quick task manager on the top right corner from which we could switch apps and close them. that doesnt come anymore, instead i get this new and useless notification bar. How do i make it show the quick task manager? (detailed instructions appreciated)
The above 2 make it really annoying to switch/close apps because once u minimize, the only way to go back to them it seems is to pull up dot fred task manager.
3. Pressing the home button on the device while running an app (the home iconed hardware button under the screen) takes me to the opened start menu not the home screen. when i exit out of the start menu it takes me back to the app, so i cannot access my homescreen unless i press ok on the app and minimize it, is there any way to make the hom button take me to the homescreen?
Thank you in advance?
1 & 2 : use showcase : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4030896
3 : use end button instead of home (which is an HTC non-sense, get the start menu like your rom is configured is really a better idea)
fantastic app - showcase. that solves my task manager problem, but i still have to press start, go to apps and press showcase to bring it up, can i have it mapped on the notification area so i can simply fire it up without having to go to the start menu?
thanks.
I have been having issues with Showcase not wanting to install or run properly on the newest 6.5 build 23071. If I load v1.0.1 It will work for the most part and I can configure it to still to close a program by clicking on the clock.. How ever when I switch to the newer 1.1.0 build I can not get the lower X to close thing like it should by either holding it or by setting to single tap.
I'm currently doing a hard reset because of trying taskfacade and trying to go back to Showcase.
i just installed 1.1.0 and it seems to be working fine. i even managed to figure out how to bring it up from any app. just tap and hold the win key and it comes up. very nice software.
Ya I have it back up and working. The only other issue to look forward to with Showcase is that some report it closing tmail.exe from time to time. I also map my PTT short press to open it for those programs that take the full screen and do not have the Windows icon.
You can also check out AEButton+. You have to pay for it, but it's pretty cheap. I got it last week, and have no idea why I didn't get it sooner. Haven't tried it on the newer com3 builds yet (still using com2), but I'm pretty sure it will close things. It isn't tied into the displaced 'X' button like a lot of task managers. You can close apps with a button push, and it also has a nice little task manager pop-up that you can also map to a button push (similar to the htc quick menu). You also get ~dozen more mappable button pushes on a fuze. It's really worth it, although I haven't tried a com3/4 6.5 build yet.
Newer WM6.5.1 builds such as 23071... clicking on the clock brings up the new drop down taskbar...
Running HTC Task Manager, you have to tap and hold, then release to get the task manager to shop up. Does Showcase experience this as well?
It seems to be with the new builds. I would assume Showcase would function the same.
Why don't you people just use inbuilt taskmanager.exe from Windows folder? I've configured it to open with long press "send" key (talk button), and it's working great.
I use aebutton and tie it to my Ok/Back key to close apps and it's working like a treat. that's the best way to really close apps I feel
i have a custom winmo 6.5 rom aslo, everything runs good on it, except the onscreen keyboard is useless now, all i can seem to enter are numbers only and i have messed with the input settings to see if that can correct it and so far to no avail or maybe im just one of the weird people who actualy use the onscreen compact qwerty i dunno.

Why the "x" button doesn't close apps in Windows Mobile?

Hi, guys, I've been using WM for a long time but this question has always interested me. Why "x" button doesn't close the apps but it rather kind of minimizes them? Ok, it's not problem for me, because I use software that makes "x" button close the apps, but why WM was designed that way? Most of the embedded apps in WM don't even have "exit" command in their menus. It's like WM is designed to has a lot of apps/processes running in the background? I always check Task Manager to verify that there isn't any parasitic app running that can heat up my device and drain the battery.
You can enable this in settings... by default it is set to minimise programs when you tap X, and close them when you tap and hold X. Go into settings, Task Manager, Button and you can set it to close programs buy just tapping X... no extra software needed. And yep, I guess it's designed that way so you can multi task.
when you close an application with ok/x button it doesn't close and stay in ram memory, so the next time you select the same application it will start immediately from the ram..

In Task Manager, there is no setting for the "x" button. At least not in the original WM 6.1/6.5
This is screen of Dutch Rom (6.1 and 6.5) with option as described above.
Moved as not software release.

Surface Pro Sleep?

Hi guys,
I had a quick question. On my surface pro, I've set the power button to put the device to sleep both on battery and on the power adaptor. But after a few minutes after pressing the button, it seems to turn off. Because when I press the power button, it shows the Surface logo again and boots fresh. Does anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?
Second minor question. Can you scroll with the Wacom pen?
It does a full boot, not a hibernate restore? That would be odd. Check the event log for more info on what it's doing after you press the button.
As general advice, check your hibernate settings (is it enabled, when does it trigger, etc.)
Yea, well I'm not sure if it's a hibernate restore, but it does show the surface logo. And I checked the settings for power plan, and it says like, what to do with power button and I have itbset to sleep in all cases...not even hibernate.
also, how can I check the event logs and what should I look for
Showing the Surface logo just means that the system was in a powered-off state (hibernate counts). The easy (and obvious) way to tell if it's hibernate or full shutdown is whether your programs are still running when it comes up. Open a file in Notepad on the desktop or something...
To check Windows event logs
Right-click the Start button and choose Event Viewer (this is new in Win8, and handy).
Or, open the Start menu and type "event" (this has existed since Vista; still works on 8 for some things you need to select "Settings" on the right now, which is my biggest gripe with 8).
... do people still not know how to find things on Windows? The mind boggles.
Anyhow, check under Windows Logs -> System log for text like "sleep" or "hibernate" (you can use Ctrl+F to search). It may help to set a filter (option is on the right) of Event source: Kernel-Power, Power, and Power-Troubleshooter. Start at the top of the log (ensure it's sorted so this is most recent; it should be) and look for any indication of what happened.
Hey thanks! So looks like it is going in to hibernate, I checked that my apps were still open. so the question is, why hibernate and why not sleep? any other suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further?
Hibernate draws no power at all (literally, on devices with removable batteries, you can hibernate them and then remove power and battery and leave it on the shelf for a year, and it will resume where it left off when plugged in again). Sleep mode draws some power still; the RAM needs to be continually refreshed, and some system components will run in a low-power state to monitor for things like network wake-up messages.
You can use the Power Options in Windows (on the Desktop, right-click the battery icon, select Power Options, then chose "Change plan settings" for your selected power plan) to control the automatic hibernation behavior. It should be possible to turn it off, or at least set it to a long time. If you want to disable hibernation entirely, that can also be done but you'll need to use the command line. Open up an administrator command prompt (this can also be done from the Start button context menu) and type the following command:
powercfg -H off
Note that this will also free up some "disk" space on C: because hibernate works by writing the RAM out to disk. However, it will also mean that if the battery runs critical, the tablet will have no option but to shut down (currently, it will enter hibernate so you can pick up where you left off when you get to power).
