Hi All,
I posted a similar question before without too much response. So bear with me as I repost it here in this forum as you guys seems most knowledgeable.
In where I live, GPRS data cost an arm and a leg. They charge you something stupid like 10 dollars for 12 megs, WITHOUT the option of purchasing an unlimited plan. What I'm trying to find out is is it possible for our Kaisers to act as an analog modem so I can tether it to my laptop and dial-up to a local ISP? Sure the speed would be terrible, but at least I'll get connectivity without incurring tons of data charges.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated

It would really suck if you're moving such as on a train or such because this kinda of data doesn't handle tower swapping.
It should be possible, depending on your phone provider. I know at&t used to allow it, but it's unavailable with any new plan now, for instance.

Hm... interesting. Technically my phone provider can "dis-allow" their customers from dialing into an ISP using a voice call, but in reality can they really prevent you from doing so? I mean from their end its just any voice call right?
But I digress. Does anyone know how I can set up something like this in WM6? I tried doing the following :
1. Create a new Connection
2. Select "Cellular Line" as my modem type
3. Enter the phone number of my ISP
4. Connect using this new connection
But it fails, saying that it got a problem establishing the connection. At first I thought it was failing to establish carrier with the ISP, but later I found out that it doesn't even dial out but changing the number to my home phone number.
Any ideas would be appreciated.. thanks!!
Actually, there is a circuit you can build, for the electronically inclined, that will connect the headphone/mic ports on the kaiser to the 2wire hole on your laptop, enabling you to use your minutes to DIAL aol or msn or whatever.

Would that be akin to using a mini usb to rj11 adapter? That would certainly be doable! However, I would imagine some drivers needs to be installed. Say, for the WM6 device to act as a modem and for windows to detect it as a modem.

I'm not sure how it's done, but my provider certainly does block it unless one is provisioned.
On my Sony Ericsson t637, I can ISP dialup on one sim that is provisioned on the monthly plan, but on the other cannot dial through. If you hand dial it, you can hear the other side's modem for fax (for example), but if you try tether dial for instance, it doesn't work. Either sim does not contain any network setup information and it's all on the same phone.

That's very interesting.... the fact that if you hand dial you hear the other side's modem but if you let WM6 dial through one of its connection setups you won't be able to connect.
This leads me to think it might be a software limitation. Any other thoughts?
I want to do this too and have the same issue of it not dialing. But if I hand-dial the number it connects (well, I hear the modem sound). Would it be possible to setup windows to work off those sounds? So instead of dialing, it will just send authentication information. Or dial without dial tone, then you hand-dial it on the cell, and route the "audio" to the modem?
It worked for me
Hi everyone
I use T-mobile in USA, I have the myFaves plan, it allows me to call 5 numbers of my choice for free. One of these numbers is a Dial-up number that I use to dial out and connect to the internet. However it takes about 20-30 attempts before I make a connection (or sometimes it connects in just 2 attempts).
The point is, I've done it and it actually works. All you need to do is go in 'Connections' and add a new connection. Select 'Cellular Line' and specify the phone number you wish to dial.
I would love to use this method of connection since its free, but the time it takes to connect is very frustrating. I came here looking for some free software that would allow the voice call to be easily recognized as a data call so that I can continue using this facility.
I called T-mobile a while back and asked as to why it was so inconsistent, the cusomer representative replied saying 'You are getting away with it, it's not supposed to happen'. He said that they needed to enable CSD for my line for it to actually work. I had the CSD inactive according to him. I argued that I used voice dialing and not CSD, he didn't agree with me.
Lets keep this thread active and search for a solution, let me know what you guys think.

That's very interesting! I have followed your steps exactly as above, however I can verify that mine doesn't actually dial out. Have you tried substituting your dialup number with your home phone number? That way you can verify at which stage the failure happens. For example, if your home phone rings, then we can conclude that you've managed to make WM6 dial out (which is further than what I've got), which most likely means it fails at the connecting stage.
That fact that I couldn't even get WM6 to dial out makes me think its a software issue more than a network limitation.
I think there's a problem with the Analogue CSD Modem on the TyTN II.
I've been trying to get mToken (http://www.choung.net/mToken/) to work as a simple VT100 async modem connection over the GSM cellular modem and have had no success. Works fine on my other WM5 device (XDA Orbit) using the same SIM card.
As another test I tried getting my ISP connection working over the dial-up Cellular Line (GSM) using start->settings->connections->connections and using then 'cellular line' option under modem selection. Again no success on the TyTN IIl. Again this works perfectly on my other XDA Orbit device.
I have a case open with HTC UK who are still investigating the analogue modem problem on this device.
There's another thread relating to this here:

I can also dial out to any analogue phone no problem using the 'cellular line' modem. The trouble is the HTC's modem is not able to establish a connection if you have an analogue data modem at the other end - it just hangs indefinitely.

Interesting... the problem of not being able to dial out seems more and more like a software problem. In particular, it looks tied to the Radio ROM since I'm on the 1.27.12.17
I'll try some other Radio's and report back the results. zoggo, if you don't mind, please tell us what version of radio are you using. Wouldn't hurt to let us know which rom you're running as well.
Thanks

Interesting, I wonder if my provider will charge me data for this
The topic becomes more and more interesting;
now i have an idea - to connect an old gsm phone to my linux server and configure it as a dial-in server/gateway, with free data plan between my Kaiser's SIM card and my server's one... This way i will have 500 free minutes of internet every month
The problem is...i don't know how to do it ...yet
12.32 is no good

I have just tried the 12.32 radio and I'm still not able to dial out. Just to clarify, I couldn't even get the connection to dial out.
So this means something other than the radio rom is allowing zoggo and svilendotorg's kaiser to dial out to an analog number from a connection. If you dont mind zoggo, can you tell us what ROM you're running on? I myself am running on dutty's v3 final.
Thanks

Thank you all for the feedback, I was on phone with the T-mobile Customer care (level 3 data) today. According to this very knowledgeable person, it is 'supposed' to work and we are 'supposed' to connect without any problems.
This also goes with the fact that there wont be any data call charges if we use the dial-up connection. However we will be using our voice minutes, depends on your plan.
The representative explained to me that CSD was only used for incoming data calls, like fax etc. and assured me that I did not need CSD for it to work properly (he proved my point). T-mobile offers CSD option for additional fee every month. I also told him that I was able to connect many times before, but the connection was inconsistent (30 attempts etc.).
To shinji1: I used Q-Mobile 1.1 with radio ROM 1.27.12.32 and was able to dial out properly (In fact, I personally think that this is the best radio ROM for this purpose). Currently I use dutty's v3 ROM with the same radio and was able to establish a dial-up connection many times before. You better flash to these ROMs; there is no tweaking involved, just flash and try to connect.
The mToken utility looks very promising. I'll tinker with it later and let you guys know my progress. As zoggo pointed out, this indeed could be yet another HTC software problem (or even the new windows mobile problem), lets hope they solve it.
Finally, I noticed that I am able to establish a connection on some days and failing to do the same on others (no matter how many times I try). So if its not working for you, try connecting again after 2-3 days? Its just a hunch, but its an observation I made.

Hi, on my Polaris I've my Gmail account which updates itself through IMAP4.
I want the following: Wenn i have a WIFI connection the email will update through WIFI, without WIFI I want hem to automaticly connect with GPRS.
This is standard with internet explorer.
I allready found out that you can switch the connection manually: Mailoptions --> Adanced server options --> Network connection, then change it to internet or GPRS
Is there a way to do this by for example making a network connection which can use both???
Don't know too much about the topic itself, but maybe try a more advanced email program like Outlook?

I'm still using my Hermes whith wm6, whith Outlook so there shouldn't be any real difference, but I haven't noticed the problem you're encountering. Whith WiFi on it uses it and when not, it uses GPRS/3G/HSDPA.
But then again, thw wifi network is set to connect to the internet, and the ISP settings are set to be automatically used.

Considering the fact that I got a 2-month free trial for Outlook, I doubt that the built-in email program is Outlook on the Polaris. Else, it would clearly state Outlook (M$ would not sell it anonymously , my guess )

Yeah I can do that, 'The Internet', only two options are available in the specified menu, 'The Internet' and 'Work' nothing else.
And the default messaging app is Pocket Outlook since ancient times.

When connected to WIFI it will get my mail, when not, a pop up is displayed saying: Can't connect with current networkconfiguration. To change this configuration go to this link.
When I click the link I get connection configuration in which I didn't changed a thing.
I don't get it, doesn't anybody have the same problem as me.
Maby the new cooked ROM will help.
My Polaris configured automatically, I am not sure if it depends on the provider. I am using KPN.
It shows you the result during configuration.
Has yours completed normally?
I have had the same problem.

Simple stated, I can use both for e-mail and internet and WIFI get's priority over GPRS/UMTS when in WIFI range.
ok... I've had this same problem where my TC won't check email, windows live, etc through my wifi, despite being connected.
The reason is... my wifi connection was setup to say it connects to "work" as opposed to "the internet".
For those having the same problem as me, follow these instructions...
1) Click on start, settings, connections, then "wi-fi" icon
2) Press (hold down) on your wifi connection, and then click "edit".
3) change "connects to", to say "the internet".
4) Click next, next, and finish.
5) Close the settings menu and try again.
Worked for me!
PS... yes I know I'm a donkey for messing it up in the first place, but it's all good fun learning!
Same weird problem here now.
It use to work without problem. Wifi was preferred network.
When wifi not available, GPRS/UMTS (T-Mobile NL) was used. Since yesterday i'm not able to retrieve pop3 mail through G/3G anymore. Internet is ok and WindowsLive also no problem. Also pop3 mail through wifi is no problem.
I'm going to hardreset now.
Hello,
I just found and test on my vox, the way to autodisconnect from GPRS after the mail check. I was very unhappy with this feature because my battery was drained much faster then now.
The way to autodisconnect is:
Edit registry with a registry editor:
go to HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\
Create a new DWORD value: CacheTime with decimal value of 60
This is the amount of time in seconds your smartphone will wait before ending the packet data connection.
Under SuspendResume, remove the string "~GPRS!" and replace it with "GPRS_bye_if_device_off"
This change tells the device to obey the time set in CacheTime and sever connection, vice the default setting of leaving the connection all the time.
I tested that settings on HTC S710 and Samsung i600 and it worked.
thanks for the great tip
Thanks a lot for the tip. Has been looking for it for a long time. Because my previous handset (Nokia E50) used to automatically disconnect after checking mails. Looks like Microsoft gets a cut money from operationrs for GPRS usage
hi,
this method will only cut gprs connection after mail sync or all connections ?
60 second after the end of sync or after the start of it ?
a lot of question ;-)

this setting will close all GPRS connections immediately after they are not used.
Don't work! (Samsung Omnia i900)
Also when you might have been busy browsing the internet or using a chat application for instance Mxit, and someone calls you the GPRS Connection gets dropped but it does not continue after the call has ended.
I did some testing on my own and made a thread about it, but still haven't got an answer to my question except for not changing the registry and leaving it on default, the session will continue after the call has ended and using the Com Manager to end the connection manually when you are done.

Hope it helps answer some questions...
Telecom New Zealand has recently launced its "new" mobile network - WCDMA on 850MHz (it was a the rather antiquanted CDMA system prior!). Their range of "new" phones was nothing spectacular really and nothing much else worldwide appealed to me more than the X7510, so I duely purchased one from the UK.
When the SIM card was installed the unit come up with the following message:-
The Operator does not exist in the database. Please contact your Operator for the connections settings.
[Intrestingly enough, Vodafone NZ is in the database, even although the X7510 is not sold in NZ - but I digress!]
However the phone function and SMS appear to be working well, apart from the fact that it refuses to acknowledge the NZ Telecom Voicemail number. I get a good solid H in the Quick Menu Bar.
The data connection refuses to work at all though.
I have contacted "the Operator", but they are not all that interested in helping me as the X7510 is not a phone we support and while they've helped a little bit, the several HelpDesk Operators I've tried, all seem to end up with the same conclusion that everything the phone needs to know about the network and connection is on the SIM card.
When I open the SIM Manager, I can "see" some of the data there. (e.g. such as the Voicemail Number, but Voicemail on the phone Speed Dial is blank - no number stored). And when I try and connect to the Internet (using the number that Telecom provided verbally) it keeps asking for more Connections Settings, which I am told, there aren't any more to enter - it's all on the SIM!
It appears to me that the phone is trying to "capture" the Operator's Settings via radio rather than obtain it from the SIM!
Is there a way I can override the radio search function and get the PDA to "look" at the SIM card? Or maybe try any other method to obtain a data connection.
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers, Greg

I'm not too up on this, but I think your X7510 is NOT compatible with the TNZ system. Telstra use a very unusual hybrid of 850/2100 connections where most operators use 850/1900 or 2100 only. One is for upstream and the other for downstream where there are 2 figures.
Although it does support both 850 and 2100Mhz, they are on different frequency bands, so you could have the 850/1900 working OK, but not 850/2100.
What it means in practice is that whichever band you select, you will only get upstream or downstream UMTS connections, not both together. This may be why you see the 'H' but can't connect. In practice, you may only be able to use this phone on the slow GSM network.
Some of the other stuff is setup based, and some info you have been given is simply wrong!
To get the SMS and Voicemail number set, start the phone dialler, and go to Menu/Options/Services then scroll to the bottom setting in the window (VM and SMS) and tap it to highlight, then Get Settings. You may need to manually enter the VM access number you normally dial. Do 'Save to Network' and they should be OK.
For data access, you do not enter any phone numbers- you need to configure the setting as 'Cellular Modem GSM/3G' then enter the Access Point (APN) and any password and username.
It seems Telstra are cagey about publishing the connection parameters but I found this one:
GPRS APN: - telstra.internet
Username: - {blank}
Password: - {blank}
DNS: - 139.130.4.4, 203.50.170.2
As I suspect though, you may only be able to get GSM, not 3G/UMTS

Neil,
You are a Gem! Okay, the first part didn't work, but I can enter the Voicemail as Speed Dial #2 or use the Voice Dial on the Parrot BT; so no real biggy that the X7510 simply will not accept the Telecom Voicemail number.
But I did hit paydirt with your data access suggestion and that was the one that was really important for e-mails and Internet access (as there aren't too many Wi-Fi Hot Spots in sparsely populated New Zealand!!)
Thanks so much for your prompt and excellent response.
Regards,
Greg
You're welcome!
Presumably you are only getting GSM speeds for your email and web access? Or do Tesltra do something different with their band splits to allow full 3G access?
It may be interesting to go to DSL Reports when you have a good signal and see what speed you are getting. You might have to repeat the test with a larger file than the default, but you'll get the correct prompts.
GSM will give you from 25 to about 100kbps (GPRS or Edge), 3G will give up to 300kbps and HSDPA can give up to 2Mbps
I don't know if you can do anything about the incorrect speed dial 1, but at least you have a workaround. Are you sure you manually entered the Voicemail number in the VM box in Options/Services/SMS and Voicemail> Get Settings ? I've just tried this with my X7510 and after editing the VM number, then hitting 'OK' it commits the change to Speed Dial 1 correctly.
[Edit. I can alter my Speed Dial 1 number by opening the Dialler then tapping 'Speed Dial', highlighting SD1 then Menu/Edit which opens the settings screen. Scroll to the bottom of the list to select Voicemail and Text Messages then Get Settings. Manually enter your voicemail access number then tap 'OK' which send the settings to the network and commits the change to SpeedDial 1. If that doesn't work, it may suggest Telstra are blocking the ability to change. ]
Once again, thanks for the prompt reply.
On that speedtest link you gave me I got: - 483, 489 & 319 kbps. This is off the local tower which is a good 20 kms from the city. I'll try in the CBD tomorrow and see what I get.
I had aready tried your suggested methods for locking in the Voicemail number, but to no avail. On my X7510 it's called Voicemail and Text Messages and when you highlight and then Get Settings, it always shows a number for the Text Message Service, but a BIG blank for the Voice Mail!!
Intersting comment you made about the Service Provider possibly blocking the ability to change?? If they are, lil' old me ain't going to get them to change that!
b.t.w. it's Telecom, not Telstra (who although here in NZ, are not a big mobile player like they are in Ausssie). I would guess that in NZ, Telecom has about 45% market share and Vodafone likewise.
I'll be in touch on best speed as at this stage, I appear to be somewhere between 3G and HSDPA?
Cheers,
Greg
ok- your figures are showing a pretty good connection speed so you are definitely in the HSDPA zone!
With regard to the blank box for the VM number: have you actually tried typing your VM number into the box then hitting ok?
Neil,
Yes I have tried typing in the Voicemail number directly under Phone Settings. When I hit OK, it says "Sending new settings to Network" and then comes back with "Cannot Save your changes"
On the speed - I have just picked up the "new" USB data card (for use on the same HSPDA Network) for my laptop and given that a try - wow! Download 6,485 kbs - Upload 1,445 - that's 1.5 x times the speed of my Office copper-wire broadband system. Telecom did promise some pretty impressive speeds and they are delivering (by NZ standards anyway).
I actually think your first summation of the this NZ Network being on 850/2100 (and not compatible with setup on X7510) might be correct Neil as about 545 kbs is the best I can achieve on the X7510. Hey, I can live with that, the other features of the X7510 make up for that and the laptop is never far away if I want to get some real speed!!!
Cheers,
Greg
Hello. I have a problem with my phone, which i did not faced before on other Windows Mobile devices (this is my firs 6.5 one).
Samsung Customer support, lighlty saying, did not helped me redirecting me to my carrier, which i do know is not faulty.
So, when phone have established 3G data connection (neverthless is it internet or mms) i cannot send text messages. Phone acts like there is no range or number was invalid.
When i switch band from WCDMA to GSM, full duplex works like charm. In my opinion i've paid (it's second hand device, but who cares) for fully featured phone and switching band does not solve my problem (in my place only WCDMA works, on GSM band voice calls are choppy and signal still gets lost).
I would me more that gratefull is someone can help me with this strange problem. Phone is used in Polish network Play Mobile (260 04), is sim unlocked (don't know was is locked at all earlier).
What i've done: i've changed sim card to other provider (T-Mobile), did hard reset, upgraded to latest ROM (upgrade_tool_for_sph-i350_ver.1.4.1.0), and lurked in registry searching 3g-, data-, duplex- related keys and values.
Someone faced similiar problem in this device or system?
edit. After checking some settings on SGH-i600 i've found that there's setting to change SMS sending method. It's called 'Send SMS Option' in Connections, and it has 'Network seletion' (not selection ;p) with options 'PS preferred' and 'CS preferred'. In my opinion it's Nokia's coresponding option 'sms over GPRS', which makes on Nokia device to send messages faster.
Anyways, changing this option to PS changes value in HKLM/Comm/Cellular/SMS/Router/ServiceOption from 4 to 8. Changing this value on target device (i350) does make smses not to send at all, regardless if data connection is on or off.
