Insanely stupid question alert - General Topics

Hi,
I've been a long time user of XDA type things - started with an XDA, then an XDA2 and will have my MDA Compact II delivered tomorrow, but have one serial problem which I'm sure there must be an answer to and would really appreciate some help.
If I perform a hard reset, when I pop the phone back in the cradle, how do I tell it that I want it to be called whatever it was called before? Each time I've hard reset my device (and that's a lot of times over the past four years or so) I've ended up with a different name, a different My Docs folder and so on.
Can someone help me out?
Michael.

Your question isn't stupid, it's just one that already been asked here:
Before you connect the device:
ActiveSync -> File -> Delete Partnership
Have a nice day!

I had that problem with my HTC Charmer as well. Whenever I hard reset my device, upon the first sync, the PC will give my phone a different name (even after I've set it up on the phone earlier on). So, what I did is, after I hard reset and sync my phone for the 1st time, in the midst of sync, I'll stop (click the stop button ) the sync and change my device name back to the previous name, and it seems to work.

Thanks very much guys.

Stupid question about ActiveSync

Sorry if it was already discussed here.
The problem is that when I do hard-reset the device and then connect to my PC, that ActiveSync wants to establish connection with it and asks for a name for the connection. The old name does not fit! Well, I used to experiment my device last weekend and my fantasy for an unuque name has gone.
How the hell can I tell to that stupid ActiveSync that the device is the same it used to work with an hour ago before hard-reset?
Best thing to do would be to change your device name back to the old name immediately after the hard reset.
Go to Start --> Settings --> System --> About --> Device ID and enter your old name in there. When you sync, ActiveSync won't moan about it.
Hi Activesync you may have to delete the partnership, this can be found under FILE.
Make sure you have the regional setting the same as before. Otherwise it will think its a different device.
Ian
Thank you all! It works, thanks to ian watson/ And now I know where I can check my name - thanks to snorbaard.
Its good that its sorted!!

Activesync of Outlook stopped working

For no apparent reason, Activesync (4.5 5096) of Outlook on my TC (standard ROM see below) has stopped working. Outlook email/contacts/diary not getting synced.
After plugging USB in a message says 'Sync cannot be connected succesfully...try again... and run troubleshooting..'. But Activesync/Help/Troubleshooting/Reporting says there is nothing wrong! Indeed, I can still explore TC and card, sync other software (e.g. Media Player, TomTom Home, eWallet etc).
But I can't get in to the ActiveSync/Options menu to check out the relationship. Have soft reset TC, turned off PC firewalls etc, but nothing helps. Little puzzled because it all worked fine for the past 2 months and I wasn't even playing around when it decided not to work!
Any ideas please?
Thanks,
CI

had the same problem some time ago. changed the cable and everything was fine.you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling activesync.
Jackster
Thanks. Cable was OK, but uninstall/reinstall of activesync worked. indeed speeded up activesync and fixed a lot of other minor secondary problems while it was at it would recommend it for all every now and then. strikes me that activesync is one of the those bolt-on bits of MS obeseware that needs regular maintenance?
USB Device not recognized
To mark the anniversary of me posting my original message, all of a suddden and for no apparent reason, Activesync has stopped working again. Bizarre
This time its a little different, I don't get anything except a pop message on PC saying 'USB device not recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click on this message'. Which of course I di and it didn't help!
So, I've tried
- un-installing/re-installing Activesync 4.5
- rebooting PC and TC umpteen times
- changed USB port/cable
- tick/untick Settings/Connections/USB-to-PC/Enable Advanced network functionality
- putting the kettle on
Nothing is working (Although the cup of tea was nice
Would really appreciate some help please
Thanks

Help! Really desperate on this one. I have been trying to think why this should suddenly happen. Two things possible:
- During my last succesful sync I received and answered a call. Would this damage registers or something?
- I accidently pulled the mini-USB headphone cable a bit while listening toi music. But the sound is still perfectly OK, and I receive power charge via USB even though it won't connect/sync. And like I said, I've swapped cables/ports.
I've Googled this a lot and most people fix by fiddling with stuff I have already done and praying!
Please. Anyone got any ideas before I too start praying!
Thanks
1. No, it should not. Never heard it did.
2. AFAIK, not reason as long as it charges trough USB port.
Try to delete device from Active Sync while device is not connected. You might need to restart PC.
You'll have to set options again when device is recognised.
This is what I have to do often.
Also, check device name on device itself, it tends to change from time to time for no apparent reason (at least to me). If it changes, it causes following problems to me:
1. Active Sync troubles
2. BT connection to car audio stops working.
Hope some of this will help...
BTW... you have WM 6.0 on it? If so, don't upgrade to WM 6.1... IMHO, WM 6.0 is faster than 6.1 and has less problems with Active Sync...
Bodisson,
Thanks for suggestions. Alas, none work
It looks like I am going to have to hard reset and/or burn new ROM. For those of us who don't do this regularly, this can be a nerve racking experience. However, I was perhaps sweating too much about it for a couple of reasons:
- it seems very few people have anything good to say about WM6.1. Until now I have been pretty happy with WM6.0 and have had 14 months of virtually trouble-free use, so maybe I'll just stick with that. I'm not a power-user, so the vast array of cooked ROMs is rather bewildering. Unless one is rock solid and aimed at non-power end-users?
- I thought installing a new ROM without Activesync was impossible, but I see someone has worked a way to do it via the SDHC card. Well done XDA
So, unless anyone has some further ideas I will just hard reset to WM6.0 and hope for the best. I have this terrible feeling though that my mini-USB port is damaged and I'll get the same bubble of doom even after hard reset.
Thanks
Either do a hard reset back to factory (and hope you can re sync all your stuff with the PC),
OR
Re flash the rom to C Shekar's "b" rom. It really is very good, and transforms the phone. In fact, it is so good that I have finally stopped fiddling with my phone! (and I'm a born fiddler!)
It is very good, and works immediately, but you might need to spend time tweaking it - the must is to install the correct radio.
I've done quite a lot of rom upgrading, so am quite comfortable now with the process. If you want to do it and need a hand, let me know.
Have you tried to verify your firewall? Last time I had some Sync problems was just after updating my firewall that changed settings to default, blocking the Polaris-PC communication.
Have tried disabling all firewalls with no luck.
I've hit a brick wall on this one, but am fearful it will be hard to get device back to working order again if I do hard-reset and still can't sync
Suggestions very welcome
Thanks

OK, I feel for you on this one!
If you don't want to flash to a new rom (or, re flash to your old one), there is a solution but it involves removing and renaming your Outlook.pst file ... the procedure (which is on this site somewhere) seemed fraught with danger, to me, so i preferred to re flash when i had a similar problem.
Before re flashing, if you decide to, you backup your data using PIMBackup - only your contacts and maybe phone call list, not anything specific to the phone's operating system or software.
Re flash, then restore the data.
Then, Active Sync will see the phone as a completely new system.

Serious help needed

hi all.
I am in serious trouble and i need help. i realized i did not have outlook, thus my contacts are all gone.
I had tried to update my software earlier by installing some .cab file. It was a file for my HTC home. The installation was 'successful', however after i did a reset ( they prompt me to ) i could not boot up my phone. It get hanged once it got to my wallpaper, and i cant tap or press anything. The htc home screen also does not come out.
=(
any kind souls?
So something is hanging right after windows boots... did you try to install HTC Home to a storage card? Try booting with the storage card out.
thanks for the prompt reply. i tried, however it never seems to work. I am using a HTC TYTN ii. running on windows 6.1
I did install it on a storage card. i tried means like switching on without memory card, sim card and did a million resets, but it doesnt seem to work.. =(
Actually i install the HTC Home was because the message counter on the HTC Home got screwed up. it showed 1 unread no although i had all messages read. but anyway, for now, tht's not my main concern.. =(
thanks all in advance ..
I guess I do not understand all of your issues besides the freezing at boot.
A hard reset should be an option, if you're ok with that... and then for the future, use sprite and pim backup to make sure you don't lose too much data.
Try searching the forum for threads like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320689
What caused you to lose your contacts?
my contacts are all saved in the phone, and it wasnt back up cause i am not using microsoft outlook.. and lets say i want to do a hard reset, how to do it?
and how do i do a soft reset with my phone.
Is there anyway that i can actually do a SAFE mode boot up? but my phone keeps getting hanged at start up. i dunno if its because it cant bring up a pin enter mode where I need to key in my pin each time i boot up.
0) What version of ROM were you using?
HTC TYTN ii
1) Applications installed when it happened
HTC HOME (old version ) i d/led and used HTC Diamond home, then it got screwed up cause the unread messages kept showing 1, although all messages were read. i thus wanted to reinstall the HTC home.
2) Radio ROM version (2.19.21, 2.47.21, etc...)
NONE
3) Device model (dopod 818, imate etc...)
HTC TYTN II
4) Device version (G3 or G4)
Windows 6.1?
5) How long it was since last hard reset (1 day,6 hours, etc..)
I never did a hard reset. how do i do it
6) Approx how many soft resets you already made (1-5, 5-10 10-15, etc...)
Soft refers to poking the reset button, would be more than 20 times after this issue
7) Approx how many shutdowns you already made (holding power button for 4+ seconds)
more than 10 times.
8) any other significant info you think will help:
My contacts are not saved syn with my com as i do not have windows outlook.
9) Do you have the HTC Homeplug today plugin enabled?
10) have you populated your PIM apps via pimbackup or via activesync?
11) Do you have the "HTC_default" today theme enabled?
yes.
for now, i cant boot up. the screen will hang at my wallpaper. i cant seem to press or click anything after that. My pin start up prompt does not apear too. please help =(
depressed ivy.
Sorry, but I'm pretty sure you need an app to use safe mode. You might need to loose your contacts, but don't give up... research and you might find an answer.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=The%20Safe%20Mode%20Bible
And if you've already tried booting without a sim and storage card, you might need to hard reset, which is easy enough after reading the wiki.
e.g. press both softkeys while resetting, or you could even flash a new rom via sd card by naming the .nbh file KAISIMG.nbh and putting it on your storage card root directory.
Read the wiki before you make any decisions and good luck, good news is your phone sounds like it's fine, just install a safe mode program next time.
Hi. I did research like wht you adviced, i managed to log into bootloader mode, i downloaded MTTY program and got my phone to the USB mode. I like to ask the following:
1) can i retrieve and save my contacts as i saved them all in my phone and none in my sim card?
2) Wht can i do next as I'm badly stuck at the HTC home page with only my wallpaper, i cant click on any buttons.
Thanks in advance to all.
I really hope that some GURUs here are able to help solve my terrible situation and i would really appreciate it. My contacts are all save in the phone and i need some help in retrieving it.
Thanks all.

At what exactly point does it freeze?
What is your radio version, it should appear after you turn on the device in red letters on the bottom right.
What is your SPL Version, you should be able to see it from the bootloader?
Dave
Hello friend. When I suggested research, I meant things like this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2732337
I found this thread by clicking search in the top right to use google, and typed "save contacts" which if you've gone into MTTY research (be careful by the way) then you might be able to backup your data.
MY SPL : 3.29.0000
MY radio: 1.65.16.25
When i boot up, i suppose to have some password protect, to enter my pin before there is reception and stuff. For now, I can only see my wallpaper, the start button, contacts and calander buttons. However i cant touch on anything, it just simply hangs there.
SIM card and memory card are off. I tried SYNC, but it says cannot detect device.

By "SYNC" you mean active sync? Try an Actice sync re-install, maybe?
Sounds like this protect stuff is beggared.

All this actually happen after i installed .cab file the other day, and the installation was fine and i was prompt to restart. It hanged after that till date. sigh =( I'm desperate.
GURUs,
I cant get my device to go any further than hanging right at the wallpaper of HTC Home, the usb doenst recognize my device, so i cant enter or do any thing.
I just wish to retrieve my contacts now, and do a hard reset on my phone.
Thanks.
If you never saved your contacts from and to your sim card without any kind of backup from outlook or pim, etc. you might be ****e out of luck. Gone from a ****ty samsung to a equally ****ty razr, hermes, and now kaiser with the same sim...Always copy your contacts to the sim; or at least a Backup folder on your desktop or lap. flashing erases the main memory, which of course includes contacts. That's why we have a program called sim manager, to backup contacts everytime we erase our systems. Hope you find a workaround though, as a former Iphone owner, reinputting your contacts is a giant *****
sigh.. does tht means i'm so dead now? I did ever did a PPCPimBackup, but its stored in the phone memory too? any sort of help you can assist?

Possibly, I've tried to get hold of someone who might know, but it's looking grim.
Storage Card backups and Active Sync are the best way to backup.

WM6.1 - I'm asked for a password, but I don't have one!

Hello.
I recently got a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (with Windows Mobile 6.1), and I set a password on it.
Sometimes when it would ask me for my password, the shift or fn keys wouldn't work, so I couldn't enter it. I would have to soft reset the device to be able to type in my password.
Frustrated, I decided to disable password protection entirely. I then found that after leaving the device alone for a period of time (while sleeping, for example), it would lock and ask me for a password - but since I no longer had one, I couldn't. I would have to soft reset the device to bypass the password screen.
I searched around, and found that this was a bug in Windows Mobile, and the only solution was to hard reset and never enable password protection. After a while of putting up with it, I flashed my device to use itje's Touch-IT v7, and I performed a hard reset. It was fine for a while, but now it's doing it again: it's asking me for a password when I leave it alone for a period of time, but I don't have one. I never set a password this time.
Is there any real solution to this? It's incredibly frustrating. Thank you in advance.
you mean the security password that is enforced when using exchange email? there is ap app that will enable you to turn it off, but you should read this thread (the app is listed here but you should take heed of the warning from deedee). I leave it up to you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358695
Try "hard reseting" it
I'm not using Exchange email, and the checkbox to disable password protection isn't greyed out (like it is in that thread). Thanks for the link anyway though, I'll have a look around the registry.
Anyone else know anything about this?
Edit: As I said in my original post, I already tried a hard reset when this problem originally appeared. I hadn't touched the password protection settings at all since my hard reset, but it's happening again.
Does nobody have a solution for this?
are you sure someone isn't messing with your phone and setting a password? I've been using windows mobile for 6 years and never had that problem.
And you said something about a bug.... can you link me to whatever you found?
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I just tried searching for that again, but unfortunately I can't find it. It was a thread with somebody saying that they have no password set, yet the device asks for one so they can only bypass the screen by soft resetting - and that's the exact problem I'm having now. There was no solution posted so I didn't bookmark it or anything.
I am the only person that has had access to my phone, so nobody has messed with it. The password setting is definitely disabled, and the HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\00001023 registry value is set to 1 (disabled). My phone doesn't ask me for a password when I first start it (so I can get past it each time via a soft reset), it just seems to happen after 10 hours or so - I'm not exactly sure what triggers it.
Edit: I'm not sure if this is what I read before, but it seems to describe the same thing.

Thats the question: is it really time for WM6?
So far i believe that the device cannot digest what we have so far of WM6. Too many non-functional things or bugs if you would like to say =_=
Device auto-locks and asks for password and if you dont have a password you cannot get into the device other than by soft reset. Asks password even for activesync! PDAViet has problem with activesync in vista as it disconnects after 5 minutes. WiFi only turns on from Comm center. Hang up's on 25MB free RAM. A lot of memory leak! 10MB to run SPB Time -_-...

This is really wierd, i have been using wm since 5 was on the scene and ive never come across your issue. I appreciate that your not using exchange but did you try the zeynee unlock app? It might stop the lock screen, you never know. If it doesnt work then nothing lost huh??
I didn't try it, no. I was concerned about the posts saying the application used up too much battery power, and thought checking the registry would be good enough (since nothing should be changing the value). I'll install it now and see if the problem still occurs. I don't have much hope that this will help though.
Okay, it just happened again. The application didn't help.
Ok, worth a try...
Have yoyu considered flashing to a different rom to see if this works? Is there a new stock Rom available?
Ill have to look more into this, maybe msdn has something on it.
Well, I had this problem with both my original Vodafone ROM and the custom one I'm using now. I'm reluctant to flash it again due to the hassle of reinstalling everything again.
I think it may be related to notifications. It just happened again as I got a text message, and last time it happened just before I received a Skype call. When I'm away and come back to find it locked, there tends to be a new icon in the notification area. It definitely doesn't happen every time I get a notification though...

Deleting outlook settings without resetting. How?

Hoping you can help. I've become 'the phone guy' at my office (i'm already one of the 'desktop guy's'), and as such i have to help with our various Touch's, Diamond's, Touch Pro's, Touch Pro 2's, HD2's and even the occasional Treo (plus E71's, E72's and most of the Blackberry range).
Most of it i've figured out, having been around Winmo since the QTEK 9100, but there's one issue that has escaped me. Outlook/email/activesync, whatever you refer to it as on the device.
All our smartphone users (except the BB's) connect via an exchange connection. But i've found that if you hose up the setup (mis-spelling the server name, user name, domain, etc) without realising it and then try and connect, obviously you don't connect but when you find the error and correct it, the device still won't connect until you do a hard reset and set it up again.
In addition, our AD policy requires a password change every 60 days. Too often, even when the user knows how to update the password in WinMo Outlook, it gets hosed up, and we have to hard reset (again). 60 days is plenty of time for some users to have installed plenty of extra apps, so its always enjoyable to explain that we have to hard reset the phone....
Yes, normally i'd expect to 'right click' "*Outlook E-mail" and select 'Delete', but that's always greyed out.
So, how can you delete the outlook account settings without having to hard reset the phone?
Thanks.
Never mind, i found the answer.
Open Activesync on your smartphone and click Menu - Options. Selct your account and click Menu again and select Delete.
lol yip that was gonna be my advise to you lol, well done!
