Sorry if it was already discussed here.
The problem is that when I do hard-reset the device and then connect to my PC, that ActiveSync wants to establish connection with it and asks for a name for the connection. The old name does not fit! Well, I used to experiment my device last weekend and my fantasy for an unuque name has gone.
How the hell can I tell to that stupid ActiveSync that the device is the same it used to work with an hour ago before hard-reset?
Best thing to do would be to change your device name back to the old name immediately after the hard reset.
Go to Start --> Settings --> System --> About --> Device ID and enter your old name in there. When you sync, ActiveSync won't moan about it.
Hi Activesync you may have to delete the partnership, this can be found under FILE.
Make sure you have the regional setting the same as before. Otherwise it will think its a different device.

Thank you all! It works, thanks to ian watson/ And now I know where I can check my name - thanks to snorbaard.
Its good that its sorted!!

Hi,
I've been a long time user of XDA type things - started with an XDA, then an XDA2 and will have my MDA Compact II delivered tomorrow, but have one serial problem which I'm sure there must be an answer to and would really appreciate some help.
If I perform a hard reset, when I pop the phone back in the cradle, how do I tell it that I want it to be called whatever it was called before? Each time I've hard reset my device (and that's a lot of times over the past four years or so) I've ended up with a different name, a different My Docs folder and so on.
Can someone help me out?
Michael.
Your question isn't stupid, it's just one that already been asked here:
Before you connect the device:
ActiveSync -> File -> Delete Partnership
Have a nice day!
I had that problem with my HTC Charmer as well. Whenever I hard reset my device, upon the first sync, the PC will give my phone a different name (even after I've set it up on the phone earlier on). So, what I did is, after I hard reset and sync my phone for the 1st time, in the midst of sync, I'll stop (click the stop button ) the sync and change my device name back to the previous name, and it seems to work.
Thanks very much guys.
Does anyone remember how Active Sync would create a folder for you on your desktop or where ever with your files from your phone in it? Did that go away with 4.5 or am I just not looking hard enough or in the right places. It's like as soon as I installed 4.5, all of my old info got erased (especially my contacts) Am I seeing things....or maybe not seeing things? Please tell me my wife wrong and I'm not going blind.
connect phone to activesync
look in activesync pulldown menu : tools> options
there u can set file sync and such..
its called sync toy in windows vista and its not part of the mobile device center
when u update the rom of the mda u can connect to activesync and it will ask for you to setup
the device... just press next and next and dont change anything and it will work as long as your
phone has the same name in it... (owner name )
I could synchronize my desktop PC with my Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes) without any problems until I used Pocket Mechanic on my Dopod to do some "Maintenance work"
The next thing I know, when I connect my Dopod to my Desktop, the Activesync box appears, and it says "Retrieving settings.." but after that, the notorious error message appears: "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again..." When I check the ActiveSync box, it says Connected and I can browse the PDA. But I cannot sync them.
I ran the Troubleshooter and everything is OK. (Perhaps they just test connectivity and to me the 2 are connected). I tried to remove partnerships. But it still doesn't work.
I think Active Sync is trying to retrieve settings from the PDA and it encounters problems.
Anyone knows what to do?
I had such a problem. I disconnected my wizard while syncing, and i duno wat happened, but wen i reboot my device it was corrupted, i couldnt do anything..
however fortunetly, i had a backup PIM file that i was able to restore, and it all worked well =)
I had that very same problem when I used pocket mechanic's SD card defragmenter. I mistakenly let it put my phone in safe mode and it wouldn't come back out no matter what I tried and it wouldn't let me sync either because it cuts activesync off in safe mode. Unfortunately I ended up having to do a hard reset to get it back.
I wound up with that problem after restoring from a sprite backup.
I managed to solve it by deleting both the ActiveSync partnerships on my PC AND on my smartphone (opened up ActiveSync on my phone and deleted all the partnerships in there one by one).
Afterwards I was able to create a new partnership when I plugged my phone into the PC, and everything worked fine after that.

I have the same problem now. Can you elaborate on what you mean by "opened up ActiveSync on my phone and deleted all the partnerships in there one by one"? I opened up AS on my PPC but don't know how to delete the partnership.
Thanks

Ok firstly delete the partnership on you laptop/pc : file/delete mobile device.
Secondly on ur PPC goto menu/options and press n hold the partnership you want to delete.
You should then be able to set up a new partnership and set tiems to sync.

Jay, correct me if im wrong, but i think he has posted in the correct forum, that being the Q&A forum, not unless a mod has moved it without posting a note saying so, if that is the case then apols.....
Many thanks timmymarsh and elysiand! That is the right solution.
Hi!
I have a very annoying problem with my Qtek 9100 (WM6 - TNT.1933). The device name changes all the time. I set it once to a name of my preference but suddenly after some time it was WINDOWSMOBILE21 and now it is WINDOWSMOBILE61. This of course causes problem to bluetooth device id.
In general I'm synchronizing my device with two PCs. I'm using cable for one of them and bluetooth for the other. Currently I cannot use bluetooth. I get this message: 'Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC....'. No matter what I tried I cannot fix the problem.
Somehow I believe these issues are related. I'm also suspecting that Advanced Config may cause problem.
Any ideas?
i think its the bluetooth thing
i had it connected to activesync on bluetooth on a vista pc,
when i stopped the bluetooth it just kept being connected.
i put an ipaq 2200 in the cradle and mobile device manager
wont make a connection as it is still connected to my phone :|
so i turned off my phone and it was still connected :S
and i could see all my folders in the phone while being disconnected
i pulled the battery and it still was connected :|
then i broke connection on the pc and re-cradled the ipaq and it worked
pretty weird..
i used the advanced config too , it seems to mess up some things indeed
but the activesync still works..
btw there is a new version of this adv config on the way i read somewhere
which probably fixes the issues it has.. it was still beta stage at that time
i looked
I don't understand exactly what you are suggesting.
Let me clarify further...
My phone has a partnership with my laptop via bluetooth. But when I try to use it I get 'Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC....' message. However my laptop's activesync works fine. I can also sync the device with laptop using IR. But not bluetooth.
At home, I sync device with PC using USB. No problem there.
At parallel to all that, my device's name changes all the time. No I set it back the name I want but I'm almost sure that it will change again.
uhm .. you can have only 2 partnerships with activesync if im correct
u need to pair the bluetooth devices and then make sure it has the same
com-port setup in activesync as the one it has on the device
i use activesync 4.5 and u can set the option :
allow wireless networks while connected
devicename changes are bit strange.. u mean the activesync names or the
name the device has itself ?
Configuration of ActiveSync must be correct since it was working.
Yes, I'm talking about the mobile device's name. The one you see in Advanced Config and also in Settings>System>About>Device ID.
probably this advanced config isnt so good ...
some registrysettings are for specific windows mobile
and some are specific settings for a device.
when u run such tweak programs it can set the wrong values
its best to set them by hand or dont use at all since most things wont need
being tweaked.. like u say u can set the name in the settingsscreen..
there is a new version of this config prog also.. maybe that solves the issue
I installed recently version 1.1, if this is the one you mean, but nothing changed. I will try to completely uninstal it and see how it goes.
This has nothing to do with Bluetooth.
This has everything with how ActiveSync works.
I had the same problem. For me, every time my device id changed, all my registered programs lost their registration. Frustrating.
The FIX: On your PDA, edit your "Owner Information" (Start->Settings->Owner Information), and use whatever you put in your "Name" field to register your apps.
The Device ID will continue to change every time you sync. When an app goes to look at what name the device is, it FIRST checks the Owner Information:Name, then if that isn't there, it checks the Device ID.
Good luck.

Which 'apps' do you mean?
In Owner Information I have my full name, address etc. as expected.

I have the same annoying problem with my Kaiser and WMDC on Vista, and also had the problem with my Hermes previously. The device syncs OK, and is recognised as "MDA_Vario_III" within my PC's File Explorer. I have had no problems with programs becoming unregistered.
However, no matter how often I change the Device ID on my PDA back to the name I require, it will revert back to some obscure meaningless name provided by WMDC.
I have been looking for a solution to this for a while but to no avail.
Same problem with Vista. Was it ever resolved?
Same problem here, any solution ?
There seems to be a bug if you are using an underscore in the Device ID.
I changed mine and the name seems to "stick" in ActiveSync now.
Hyphens seem to work okay, which is probably about as close to underscore as you'll be able to get
Info taken from: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsMobile/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3169154&SiteID=65
Adam
Bingo!
Even the Windows Mobile Device Center is using the old given name - mobsync has shown straight the underscore-free DeviceID and
it has not been changed by WMDC!
Thanks!
Some how I must have clicked on the "Don Not Ask Me Again" box on the USB connection screen. Now I have to manually go to the "settings" - "connections"- "USB to PC" in order to change from active sync to disk drive. I have the Ask me first box checked but no luck.
Any ideas?
BTW, I did try the search function and I am running the new HTC Fuze stock Rom.
Many thanks to all!
reset the phone , if that doesn't work hard reset the phone . with something like this unless you know the registry (which would take quite awhile to find) you can't fix it unless you reset the phone.
Yeah, usually all you have to do is check mark that in the settings. It happened to me once too, and I couldn't change it. So I had to hard reset.
I have the same problem. Someone must have figured it out already!
I would try changing it in the registry:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\USBtoPC]
"DisablePopUpUI"=dword:00000000
You want it to be 0.
resetting activesync default start up choice
Thank you Farmer Ted! Been struggling years with this type of problem, including doing hard resets... Your simple registry solution does the trick.
