For no apparent reason, Activesync (4.5 5096) of Outlook on my TC (standard ROM see below) has stopped working. Outlook email/contacts/diary not getting synced.
After plugging USB in a message says 'Sync cannot be connected succesfully...try again... and run troubleshooting..'. But Activesync/Help/Troubleshooting/Reporting says there is nothing wrong! Indeed, I can still explore TC and card, sync other software (e.g. Media Player, TomTom Home, eWallet etc).
But I can't get in to the ActiveSync/Options menu to check out the relationship. Have soft reset TC, turned off PC firewalls etc, but nothing helps. Little puzzled because it all worked fine for the past 2 months and I wasn't even playing around when it decided not to work!
Any ideas please?
Thanks,
CI

had the same problem some time ago. changed the cable and everything was fine.you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling activesync.
Jackster
Thanks. Cable was OK, but uninstall/reinstall of activesync worked. indeed speeded up activesync and fixed a lot of other minor secondary problems while it was at it would recommend it for all every now and then. strikes me that activesync is one of the those bolt-on bits of MS obeseware that needs regular maintenance?
USB Device not recognized
To mark the anniversary of me posting my original message, all of a suddden and for no apparent reason, Activesync has stopped working again. Bizarre
This time its a little different, I don't get anything except a pop message on PC saying 'USB device not recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click on this message'. Which of course I di and it didn't help!
So, I've tried
- un-installing/re-installing Activesync 4.5
- rebooting PC and TC umpteen times
- changed USB port/cable
- tick/untick Settings/Connections/USB-to-PC/Enable Advanced network functionality
- putting the kettle on
Nothing is working (Although the cup of tea was nice
Would really appreciate some help please
Thanks

Help! Really desperate on this one. I have been trying to think why this should suddenly happen. Two things possible:
- During my last succesful sync I received and answered a call. Would this damage registers or something?
- I accidently pulled the mini-USB headphone cable a bit while listening toi music. But the sound is still perfectly OK, and I receive power charge via USB even though it won't connect/sync. And like I said, I've swapped cables/ports.
I've Googled this a lot and most people fix by fiddling with stuff I have already done and praying!
Please. Anyone got any ideas before I too start praying!
Thanks
1. No, it should not. Never heard it did.
2. AFAIK, not reason as long as it charges trough USB port.
Try to delete device from Active Sync while device is not connected. You might need to restart PC.
You'll have to set options again when device is recognised.
This is what I have to do often.
Also, check device name on device itself, it tends to change from time to time for no apparent reason (at least to me). If it changes, it causes following problems to me:
1. Active Sync troubles
2. BT connection to car audio stops working.
Hope some of this will help...
BTW... you have WM 6.0 on it? If so, don't upgrade to WM 6.1... IMHO, WM 6.0 is faster than 6.1 and has less problems with Active Sync...
Bodisson,
Thanks for suggestions. Alas, none work
It looks like I am going to have to hard reset and/or burn new ROM. For those of us who don't do this regularly, this can be a nerve racking experience. However, I was perhaps sweating too much about it for a couple of reasons:
- it seems very few people have anything good to say about WM6.1. Until now I have been pretty happy with WM6.0 and have had 14 months of virtually trouble-free use, so maybe I'll just stick with that. I'm not a power-user, so the vast array of cooked ROMs is rather bewildering. Unless one is rock solid and aimed at non-power end-users?
- I thought installing a new ROM without Activesync was impossible, but I see someone has worked a way to do it via the SDHC card. Well done XDA
So, unless anyone has some further ideas I will just hard reset to WM6.0 and hope for the best. I have this terrible feeling though that my mini-USB port is damaged and I'll get the same bubble of doom even after hard reset.
Thanks
Either do a hard reset back to factory (and hope you can re sync all your stuff with the PC),
OR
Re flash the rom to C Shekar's "b" rom. It really is very good, and transforms the phone. In fact, it is so good that I have finally stopped fiddling with my phone! (and I'm a born fiddler!)
It is very good, and works immediately, but you might need to spend time tweaking it - the must is to install the correct radio.
I've done quite a lot of rom upgrading, so am quite comfortable now with the process. If you want to do it and need a hand, let me know.
Have you tried to verify your firewall? Last time I had some Sync problems was just after updating my firewall that changed settings to default, blocking the Polaris-PC communication.
Have tried disabling all firewalls with no luck.
I've hit a brick wall on this one, but am fearful it will be hard to get device back to working order again if I do hard-reset and still can't sync
Suggestions very welcome
Thanks

OK, I feel for you on this one!
If you don't want to flash to a new rom (or, re flash to your old one), there is a solution but it involves removing and renaming your Outlook.pst file ... the procedure (which is on this site somewhere) seemed fraught with danger, to me, so i preferred to re flash when i had a similar problem.
Before re flashing, if you decide to, you backup your data using PIMBackup - only your contacts and maybe phone call list, not anything specific to the phone's operating system or software.
Re flash, then restore the data.
Then, Active Sync will see the phone as a completely new system.

ok so I have a cingular 8125 which i CID unlocked and SIM unlocked. I have the T-mobil 2.26 as a ROM base and was running black dimond 1.0 touch ROM with no syncing prolbems. This past weekend my phone froze and i wasnt able to reset it, so i re flashed my base rom. I then tried to Flash the new dimond 2.0 touch rom and it flashed fine, but when i went to sync it up all it did was say it was syncing. I let it run over night and it was in the same state (saying it was syncing) that i left it in. I tried flashing another custom rom but ended up with the same result. I tried deleting active sync 4.5 and re-installing, and even tried a beta version of 4.5 but nothing has worked. PLease any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced.
could be outlook...outlook sometimes acts finicky...
recommendation would be to save your pim information...it's usually in some sort of personal folder, and then reinstall outlook. Move your pim information back and resync.
I had this same problem, but i fixed it.
I had this same problem using Diamond 1.1, so i thought it was the rom, but....Then, I used Octavoi, and I had the same problem, so i figured it was Windows Vista's Device Center (replaces ActiveSync), but... Then I found out that it stilled synced fine on my XP laptop (ActivSync 4.5), so.... i woke up one night and suddenly decided to remove my USB hub that my phone was connected through, and then I directly connected my phone to my computer (which actually gives it a direct undivided power source, it seems). After this, it synced in 4 minutes, and i finally got all my contacts back. Could this possibly be your case as well? That's all i can offer.
nope im this isnt my prolbem. and i cant find that folder that you were talking about on out look either. i tried flashing a bunch of diff roms but all it does is say its syncing and then my comp sends nothing? any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Use PIMBackup, it saves and restores that information and more (which you can choose from)... i think it's free, it came with my ROM (Octavaoi 4.5), so u might search for it.
i would uninstall some stuff with your phone unplugged and reboot it then reconnect it and make sure that the usb cord or jack is working
Betcha I had it worse...
I'm a total newb to this stuff. I'm totally blown away by the level you folks are discussing thing at.
I just replaced my Audiovox 6600 with a Cingular 8125 w/WM6. I had to upgrade to Activesync 4.5 and it was going exactly what you describe.
I SPENT OVER 8 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH THE MICROSOFT "HELP" if you can call it that.
The rapimgr.exe file was getting caught in a loop and hogging all the CPU. The answer was in:
Settings --> Connections --> USB to PC -->: Uncheck the "Enable advanced network funcionality" box
BTW - after the marathon "help" session, I was the one that figured it out.

Ok...props to you. First post and it's to help someone else with a well described solution. I hope this solves the person's problem and I'll have to remember to suggest this to folks having activesync issues... so much for "advanced network functionality" huh?
thanks alot... tried to fix this for 2 days. big props to you..
This is for everyone out there who upped to WM6 on wizard models and found ActiveSync not recognising your fone over USB. Download ActiveSyncMode.cab (sometimes named ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab) and install it on your Fone. Run it - Start/Programs/ActiveSyncMode.exe -
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB
Select 'USB Serial Sync Mode'. Now try connecting your fone and it should work.
I tried almost 50 posts and advices over 3 days and this one worked like a charm. I know there must be other issues with other fones which have different solutions. Please feel free to add to this thread all/any verified solutions.
hi,
i have tried it, but it doesnt work. do you have made spacially things to get i work ?
Not really. Installed ActiveSyncMode. Ran it and selected USB mode instead of RNDIS mode. This fixed the problem for me with a WM6 upgraded 8125 and 2 other friends with Original ROM 8125 and Original ROM MDA.
i unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in USB to PC settings on my phone and got activesync to work for me when i was having trouble

I had to reinstall WM6 and now ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB no longer fixes my connectivity problem. I'm getting fed up with WM6.
I have tried everything else and will now try this. I did not realize that this was such a problem, until I started researching to solve my own problem. So good luck to me.
Fixed it with my own build. So far. I still have to try and sync with another computer. That is where the biggest problem has been for me, is syncing with two computers.
Under Vista 64, I normally have McAfee firewall at the highest setting and also have Windows Firewall on.
At first, after upgrading to WM6, I could not sync. I then found some registry fix procedures and tried them but it did not work. I then installed ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab and it allowed me to sync. Maybe that combined with the prior registry fix might have allowed me to sync.
However, after I uninstalled WM6 and reinstalled it, I could not sync anymore. I installed ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab again, but it did not work this time. I did not try the registry fix this time because I can't find the procedures, which I originally found online. I can't remember how to find them again.
I then turned off both Windows Firewall and McAfee firewall and I was able to sync again.
I then reinstalled Windows Mobile Device Center while having the firewalls off, hoping it would allow the installations to complete properly.
I then turned on Windows Firewall but it was still blocking the sync.
I restored Windows Firewall back to default and it made it worse. I then had to reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center and was able to sync again with Windows Firewall on. Often I would have to disconnect the cradle to establish reconnection.
Next, I needed to figure out how to turn on McAfee firewall and allow it to sync.
I then contacted McAfee and they told me to exclude Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) port 5000 and Windows File Sharing (NETBIOS) port 137-139. It didn't work exactly until I lowered the firewall one level. What all this networking stuff means, I don't know. I'll have to do more searches on them.
I now need to figure out how to put McAfee firewall back at maximum level while still allowing me to sync.

After doing all the steps above, I found that all I needed to do was lower the McAfee firewall level one notch to be able to sync. However, I'm still going to figure out why I had previously been able to sync at the maximum security level. There must be some exclusion that got remove that I need to add again.
Activesync and HTC s620 issues.
This issues is driving me completely insane, So far this thread is about the only related info on the problem too. I find it hard to believe there aren’t more people out there with these issues, anyway here’s were I’m at:
Got a HTC s620 Smartphone from BT, Active sync simply didn’t work from day one and me being an IT support guy I haven’t been able to resist going back to the issue.
For over a week I have made pretty much no progress at all, I can’t find a activesyncmode.sa.cab file for my phone that works yet so got nowhere with that, the HTC website is about as useful as a chocolate fire guard.
The first leap of progress was spotting a trick on here of disabling the advanced network functionality on the phone its self.
It was baffling me at first why my computer was picking up the phone as if it was a network adapter. (And trust me I tried all sorts of in depth stuff down that avenue). It makes sense now though that the Smartphone can be setup to act as a network adapter/modem. Hence now I’ve disabled the advanced network functionality on my phone Active sync instantly make noises and hey presto ‘Connected’ and then a few moments later I’ve now got some other critical error
So my quest continues, but I will get to the bottom of this if it kills me!
So for the record, anyone with a HTC s620 Smartphone running Windows Mobile 6, before you do anything else do this:-
Start
Settings
6. Connections
7. More…
4. USB to PC
(Remove the bloody tick from box) Enable advanced network functionality
I will report back with my next hurdle…
OK, as much as I’d played around with my firewall it would turn out that this is the second culprit causing my problems. I tried installing Activesync on my Laptop and Desktop and had the same errors, however the only thing those to computer have in common is the Iolo System Shield installed. Last night to just ensure I wasn’t going mad, I tried it on my wife’s laptop and hey presto! It worked first time. So naturally, I’ve uninstalled the Iolo System Shield from my computer and bingo, worked straight away.
This is annoying however, because I did everything from the Microsoft Help setting up exceptions etc. in my firewall. But there you go.
In brief:
Check your device has the advanced network functionality disabled.
Uninstall your 3rd party firewall and test to pin point the cause, then you know what you’re dealing with.
Just a second thought of advice, one of the first things I tried was disabling the firewall, from my experience that wasn’t enough, it had to be uninstalled to get it to work. Before anyone else goes down the hair pulling road of trying anything and everything under the sun, uninstall your firewall/system guard software. At least if it works after that you know exactly what is causing the problem.
Then getting it to work with the firewall installed is something you can focus on possible in conjunction with the software vendor.
I fixed teh same problem by unchecking the advanced box but .....
after oving back to wm5, I cant connect as well. I look for the working solution from WM6, but I cant find the menue to disable the advance usb connection.
It looks like that is the problem to sync with vista 64
Hope somebody has a idea.
thx in advance
My USB connection to activesync stopped working. (although at my second pc it still works OK)
It works via InfraRed though!
I think this USB problem started when I was trying to connect via bluetooth.
Don't you just hate ActiveSync!?
Well, maybe the problem is with Windows XP... because it doesn't recognizes the PDA.
Anybodies help? Thanks in advance.
No file ActiveSyncMode.cab !

No worries, new link:

would be a shame to let a useful thread go into some archive, so I'm resurrecting this oldie.
Also, I remedied this activesync issue with a more straigtforward fix. Fresh flash of 6.5. After deleting all the USB devices in the device mgr (didn't help), I saw there was a WM6.5 setting for default behavior on PC Connection (or something similar to that). Changed it from "setup" to "sync" & that silly white toggling screen went away and allowed a flash back to 6.1.
I have tried a few of the different 6.1 ROMs available for Kaiser.
I am having on recurring problem with ActiveSync though.
My situation ... I have my own laptop at home running Vista business and Office/Outlook 2007 At work I have a laptop running XP with Office/Outlook 2003.
On 6.0 ROMs all was fine. With the 6.1 ROMs, It will not let me sync my phone to both machines (to keep my calendar and contacts in sync) It will let me set up the phone at home, and then sync fine at work, but when I return home, I get a "ActiveSync has encountered a problem on the desktop", the same with me initially setting up at work first. The only solution I have found is to remove the sync pairing on the computer, and then re-set-up the phone with the computer - this hardly being ideal.
Has anyone else experieced the same thing, and/or found a solution to this?
Thanks for any help offered, otherwise I guess I am back to 6.0 ROMs.
Very common solution with syncing is settings->connections->usb to pc, and then uncheck. try that. you would have found this out if you searched first. If this solution doesn't fix it, then must be a unique problem.

Thanks for your help - does seem to be working.
I did search before posting - solutions suggested that I found included deleted sync partnerships, reinstalling office, repair office, deleting pst files ... this solutiuon I did not find.
Well, tried the solution given above - synced fine at home this morning, and at work, but upon returning home the error has returned.

CHeck which USB cable you are using to sync. There was a massive post a while back around the issue of using non-HTC cables. I was also a victim of this. A standard USB cable has to much space around the connector and can cause it to damage the connector on your Kaiser.
I tried all the solutions mentioned and only when I used to HTC cable could I eventually sync.
It didnt completely solve the issue - my laptop has dual boot - vista and XP and I could only get it to sync with XP. Eventually that didnt work either (the connector must have get more damaged) and I had to send it back to HTC for repair.
Interestingly, when it came back I had no problems syncing with either. I have changed no settings and then last night I could not sync again. I unticked the advanced functionality in the USB to PC settings and it fixed it but why did it suddenly start happening? I havent changed any settings.
If you are woried about damage to your USB connector, have a look at the pin at the bottom of you Kaiser and see if it is straight or crooked.
I also think its a really bad idea that they put the soft reset button so close to the USB connection - how many of you have accidentally pushed the stylus into the connector when trying to soft reset your device? I have a few times and I'm sure this didnt help.
The answers arent always straight forward and its really pathetic to keep bashing people with READ THE WIKI and SEARCH THE THREAD when it is a genuine question requiring thought and support.
Better not to post at all than just to attack someone and waste everyones valuable time and take up room on a thread.
Well, having gone back to 6.0 ROMs, syncing between my Kaiser and my home and office computers is working again.
So, will stuck with 6.0 until some more official 6.1 ROMs are released I guess.
It's working for me

I'm not sure what's wrong with your computer but it's not a WM 6.1 problem. Since I started testing new ROMs, I've connected my TyTN II to 3 different computers, using 2 USB-MiniUSB cables (none the HTC supplied one), 2 computers had Windows XP, one had Vista. It was detected and configured by Activesync or WMDC every single time.
I have tried Dutty's, Sleuth, UDK, NoThrills, L26, MobileVista... It worked every single time on 3 different computers.
I don't know either, but moving back to 6.0 ROMs has made the problem disappear. I tried a number of 6.1 ROMs and they all gave the error of not wanting to sync to more than one computer - they would pair up fine, but on syncing would throw up errors and not sync, for example would be set up fine at home and synced, then go to the office set up and syn fine, but on return home wouldn't want to play anymore.
I just hope when official releases of 6.1 come out that they will work properly.
Ok this has worked for some with sync issues. Give it a try.
With Phone diconnected from computer:
Delete partnerships on Device and on computer.
(On Phone)open regedit and go to HKLM/ident
edit Name to HTC-8900 (for tilt) or HTC-TYTN_II (for kaiser)
edit OrigName to HTC-8900 (for tilt) or HTC-TYTN_II (for kaiser)
Power Off (not reset) and wait 30 sec then repower
(on Computer)Go into task manager and close wmdc.exe
go to your computers control panel and open sync center (same icon as old activesync)
Open WMDC
Plug Phone in via USB
Once it starts be sure to name partnership the same as your device ID
Please post if it works. If not there have been a few other methods that may work.
NOTE: if you switch between vista and xp, activesync has a random tendancy to overwrite the device name to something like windowsmobile72 which messes up the sync with WMDC. Changing the device name ussually fixes this issue if it occurs.
O.K. So for years I have been running 1 PDA or an other, For the last year or so I have been running my HTC Trinity without any issues.
The January 1 2009 comes around and…
My Trinity stops syncing.
Not just with my home machine, but with my work one as well
The device shows up in device manage, it makes the USB device found sound, but doesn’t make the syncing sound, and active sync doesn’t find it.
No firewalls,
Tested with multiple USB cables,
Bounced the Trinity multiple times,
Changed from sync via USB and back
Removed the profile for one of the computers from the machine and the Trinity.
Reloaded the Device driver.
Don’t know of any change made to any of the 3 devices (Who knows with M$ Patching)
Oh both computers are XP, and active sync 4.5, the Trinity is WM5
Any one with any thing I could have missed?
Has no one got any thoughts on the subject?

Are you able to test another device and see if it will sync with your computer?
If yes the I would suggest you to do a hard reset and try again!
Make sure to backup your contacts and everything else before you hard reset first, or you will lose everything!

I was trying to dodge a hard reset, but went with it anyway…
That worked and the phone Synced successfully
Then my next thought was… Well rebuilding all your apps was the only reason you haven’t upgraded the ROM so now is your opportunity.
BIG MISTAKE!
I Downloaded HTC ROM 3.00.707.18 Outlined here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321182
And started the upgrade.
It found the phone, it started the upgrade and then I heard a most disconcerting sound… The USB Undock sound.
It now Shows the Tri Colour Screen and nothing Else
It wont be recognized to sync(No surprise there) so how on earth do I bring the poor thing back to life?
I have moved this a step forward.
Now when I try to apply the ROM I get ERROR [294] INVALID VENDOR ID
I can find lots of posts on the topic, but nothing definitive.
Well Hard-SPL was my savoir…
It didn’t allow me to install the WM6 Rom as it seemed to suggest but it somehow recovered the WM5 Rom so that I am now up and running and able to Sync once again
Hi everybody
I have an HTC Fuze (ATT). The ROM I used was NATF v5. series. I tried a couple of days ago to sync it with my computer but it gave me an "USB device not recognized" message. I did a hard reset but it didn't change anything. I changed the "Energy" rom, but I had the same problem. I tried now to sync the phone with another laptop but I have the same message, so something happened with the phone. What I noticed was the fact that actually when I hard reseted, I still had the NATF 5.series screen shot, even if the rom was the energy one. I appreciate each answer as I don't know what I can do more.

Had you try other cables Sir?
NATF splash screen will remain there, because when you flash Energy ROM, it didn't contain splash screen, so it wouldn't be replaced.
I tried a different cable, as well as a different computer. On the new computer there was no previous activesync installed. This led me to belive that there is a problem in the registry somewhere, but I don't know what to change. I also installed the Activesync 4.5 several times. on the ald and new computer, but nothing helps. No firewall active.

<- same problem
Anybody has any ideas?
What about using other phones, if it's okay then the problem was on Your phone, vice versa.
In my opinion, to get phone connected, we must have Activesync (for Win XP) or WMDC (for Vista) installed, good cable (original preferred) and good phone condition (H/W or S/W)
Hope You solve it soon Sir.
I have reinstalled the ATT rom, but is still gives me a "USB device not recognized" message. So I think something is wrong with my phone. Is there any way where I can clean up the whole registry and start from a clean fresh phone?
Still not working.
I had a simmilar problem a long time back.... How I fixed it was I deleted that connection setting for that phone in activesync... Then rebooted...Try to connect it then... If it still doesn;t work, UNINSTALL activesync... reboot... reboot again for good measure.. then reinstall it... reboot... Then try to connect again.... a lot of steps, but it worked for me when I put a diffrent on an old phone I had...
OK, some updates. I tried syncing with another laptop and it is not working. I tried doing the same thing with an Apple comp and it doesn't even see it as an usb device. However I tried syncing wifi with my gmail account and it is giving me the following error message: "The configuration on your Exchange server prevents you from synchronizing. Support code: 0x85010004". So I think there is a setting I don't know how to change.
