Hi all,
since I am new to this PDA stuff (got my first HTC Magician last week), I have a question: what are those different ROM version and editions on your FTP site for?
I noticed, there are several different directories, for example:
* BigStorage
* Extended ROM
* Shipped ROM
* Modified ROM
* ...
Could someone explain this do me please? For example, what does this "BigStorage" mean, what are "Modified ROM"s?
Greetings and thanks for your help in advance, Matthias
Hi haimat,
- The shipped roms are the roms are unmodified like they can be downloaded from the various providers.
- The extended roms are a part of the shipped roms. Normally you don't see them on your device, but they are out there somewhere hiding and sneaking upon you when you perform hard-reset (powerbutton & soft-reset at the same time). Sorry got a bit carried away here. You can make them visible with the loadvdisk.exe, a hidden rom file in the windows folder, either create a shortcut to it with your PC explorer via the Act.Sync. or get something like total commandef or resco file explorer. Last option is to do a hard-reset and after you finished the init.proc with time-zone etc. perform a soft-reset. This will prevent the autoexec. from the extrom & the loadvdisk.lnk in startup won't be deleted then.
- BIG Storage roms are patched romdumps from other people's magician's (made one myself for 1.13WWe). These roms don't have an extrom anymore. The extrom is about 20Mb & can be combined with the Storage folder you have at this moment (approx. 7Mb). Get the picture? A lot of space to install programs & store data that doesn't disappear after hard-reset or powerloss.
Course you need a copy of an extrom when you apply BS to get all your default MMS & gprs settings etc from your provider.
-Modified roms, well the name says it all. Haven't tried those yet, you'll need out what is changed before applying those.
Just a little warning about the BS patch, before you think I WANT THAT read everything in the thread's for ways to solve any probs. encoutered with them. It's not without risc & you can end up with a not working device. So take your time to get used to the terms etc. Gather all the tooling & read everything again.
There's a lot of info at the fora here, reg.hacks useful apps. how to's. I'm sure you can find everything you need.
BTW welcome to this sharing and very useful community.
Regards, M

Hi, thanks for your good explaination of the different types of ROMs!
I will look into them...
Greetings and thx again, Matthias

Hello,
I'm newbie, so plz don't get mad, in case I have a question that has been answered earlier. I did use the search function of this forum intensively, but couldn't figure out how to do what I'd like to do.
What I know so far (plz correct me if I am wrong):
1. The ROM consists of two sections. First the extendedRom and secondly the storage section. While the storage section is writeable, the extendedRom is read-only.
2. It is possible to transfer the extendedRom memory area to the storage area, so that we have more space to store applications and data (bigStorage).
The questions that I have:
a) There is a ROM version and a ROM date. I guess the ROM date depends on the ROM-version. If that's the case, I think it's useless to indicate the date if one already knows the version, isn't it?
b) What does the radio-version tell me about a system? I did search for "radio-version". But it's hard to get the appropriate information, if every third's signature contains the 'radio-version' of a user..
c) What is the protocol version about?
d) On desktops or NBs my core system is mainly determined by my 'c:\windows' folder and the registry entries. How does it work for PPC? I still have the O2 Active User Interface and I don't like it very much. But before installing any apps, skins and plugins I would like to format my XDA mini and reinstall the core windows mobile from the scratch. Just like reinstalling a new desktop system. Is that possible? What do u think?
Thx for all coming answers,
moses3k - yet another magician lover
Hi,
For details on the rom-layout you can consult the wiki.
The dates & version numbers are apperently not from the same scheme eg radio 1.13 appeared months before rom 1.13 which came with a 1.12 radio.
Reinstallation of your magician is a hard-reset camera&power&soft-reset pressed at the time. To skip O2's 'extra's' you'll need to soft-reset just before customization starts. That's right after you get the default WM background after finishing the init.procedure.
Cheers, M
When uograding to bigstorage for the first time the process can look daunting but fear not, even if, as mine did, it doesnt go as per the screen shots / directions it may still work. Mine did and with the following installed here is what i have ended up with.
SPV M500 / Magician with bigstorage
running are
intellidialier, voice id (extra from extended rom)
Installed are : --
Tomtom 5, Calligrapher, pocket breeze, pocket contact, avantgo, pocket music, and several other small aps not worth mentioning.
I the process went ok using my 1gb card until: ---
As the how-to says the rom size created relfects the size of your card so the rom i was working with was 1gb, I could not use the recommended hex editor with that file due to system resources, let me tell you when you are that far into the process and you cant open the rom it is very annoying. Thankfully there are several other hex editors out there that let you load files up to 4gb allowing for resources but unfortuntely neither my old xp laptop nor my media centre could still open it. I ended up using my powerbook G4 with HexEdit 1.1 which loaded the rom just fine for editing. All the rest went OK until the end of the flsh back to the phone where i got a failed message, after a soft reset it booted into the new rom with no problem.
I have to stress to you guys thinking about trying this, it IS worth it. I am so pleased with the results. After updating and setting up BT Activesync, mms, pop3 etc and with all aps running I have the following: -
Allocated 17.7MB Allocated: 29.70 MB
to use: 11.16MB to use : 14.75MB
Free: 6.55MB Free: 24.95MB
And that is in a running state with no restrictions.
Well done to the community for such good documentation and their desire to share information and allow us newbies to get the most out of these wonderful units.
Hello,
I hope I dont sound like an idiot, but what is a big storage rom?
I have heard it mentioned quite a few times in the forum. I have a Krome Spy ( analog of M500) from australia.
Thanks.
rohseq
Nice to know that you were successful in upgrading to BigStorage. I've done it since the very beginning. My next step would be "nonentity's" File System Tweak.
@rohsek: please search this forum and you will find the answers you need.

With BIG Storage you convert your EXT-rom with operator brandings into extra internal Storage. You actually append about 20MB to the default 7MB Storage folder. Very nice hack.

COuld somebody tell me where I can find the HOW-TO described above??
Aren't there any standard ROMs?? It seems to me that when someone creates a specific ROM for a specific model, this ROM can be used in multiple devices or am I making you  ROFLYAO  by asking this question??
I've also got an Orange SPV M500 (with a huge memory shortage )...
Could someone please help me out??
Thanks in advance!!
Kind regards,
Maarten
Hi Maarten,
Still in English: visit this link for a complete description http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade. For an already patched nk.nbf you can download this one ftp://xda:[email protected]_NK.nbf/BIG_Storage_nk_for_rom_1.13WWE.zip

Hi could someone post a wm6 link to a pure virgin rom for me to cook, I don't want any extra apps in and if possible would like it to be stripped of useless extras ie games must keep office mobile (not calc)
Many thanks
Gary Hopefully a new cooker if i get the pure rom to startwith
virginity is rare novadays....
I think matt released a "virgin" aka "Naked" version of Pandora1.10... check that thread.
Sign me up for one of those virgins .. oh .. wait.. you mean a different kind of virgin.. lol.
Since you want office (currently not available in a cab) you'll need a rom cooked pretty much specifically to your needs.
I'd suggest reading Faria's and double0fours kitchen guides, then choosing the base you want and building your own with one of the kitchens out there. The learning curve isn't too bad, and that way you can get exactly what you want.
My Problem Is stripping all the S**T out the rom (What dll's go with what EXE's and shortcuts Reg settings to free up as much avail space in rom etc) can add software no problem,

The kitchen uses an application called BuildOS. You check the check boxes for the apps you want, and that's all it installes - in addition to os and sys components. No filtering required.

garymeg.....mattk_r is right !
Download, run the kitchen and check or in your case...don't check anything.
Heads up...if you're doing this to save on storage space, you got it wrong. The OS, with or without goodies will be about the same size. The advantage of cooking programs into the ROM is to actually save on storage space. The OS is a region you can not touch once it's built. To install programs afterwards will use up space.
Use the kitchen, do it your way....it's easy.
If you still want to try a pre-cooked rom, the third post in the OS thread in my signature I'm uploading a naked plus camera, office, and media player. I can't strip out media player yet, because there's a file interdependency between Office and Media player that I haven't fixed yet.
NEW ROM BY FABIII TEAM & THEQUARTZGUY BASED OFF HTC ROM v1.56 AND CREATED USING KITCHEN & TOOLS FROM XDA DEVELOPERS
WITH THAT, I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT I SPENT MUCH TIME CREATING, RESEARCHING, AND TESTING THIS AND MANY OTHER ROMS TO GET ONE THAT I FEEL MAY BE TO OTHERS LIKING, BUT I ALSO HAVE TO CREDIT THE EXTREMELY TALENTED FOLKS AT XDA (INCLUDING ALEX, POF, DUTTY, JESCPI2000, AND MANY MANY OTHERS OF WHOM I CANNOT REMEMBER!!!). THERE ARE ALSO SEVERAL APPS INCLUDED IN THIS ROM THAT WERE CREATED BY OTHER PEOPLE AND/OR COMPANIES THAT I DID NOT CREATE, BUT ONLY INCLUDED INTO THE ROM FOR OTHERS ENJOYMENT.
*ANY APPS INCLUDED THAT WERE CREATED BY COMPANIES AND ARE NOT FREEWARE APPS SHOULD BE TRIAL VERSIONS ONLY. ALSO, IF ANY APPS THAT ARE INCLUDED THAT WERE CREATED BY ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO WISHES IT NOT BE INCLUDED IN MY ROM, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WILL CORRECT THAT.
AS FAR AS I KNOW, ALL THE APPS INCLUDED ARE NOT CAUSING AN "INFRINGEMENT" ISSUE.
This is a newly created rom made by FABIII TEAM and THEQUARTZGUY (me) and is a nice rom focused towards folks who want a rom that will have basically all the apps you need or want already installed after flashing/hard reset. It has a little over 90 mb free after hard reset, which is not bad if you consider everything on the rom. This rom was only tested by a small group of people, but results have been good so far. It is basically a loaded up rom full of media/office/utility apps that are useful to most people.
It also has an autoinstall on customizations, so you can choose wether or not to install several apps, so you can set it to your liking to some extent.
This rom is pretty clean altogether, and most of the app shortcuts are placed in folders to clean up the start menu a little. The today screen looks a little cluttered, of course, due to the today plugins included, but they can be easily disabled in today settings, as you already know
ROM DETAILS:

RADIO (INCLUDED): 1.27.12.32

THIS ROMIS RUNNING A 64 MB PAGEPOOL, WHICH IM NOT SURE IF IT HELPS A WHOLE LOT, BUT I DID TRY OUT THE ROM STARTING WITH A 6 MB DEFAULT PAGE POOL, AND STEADILY INCREASING UP TO 64 MB, AND IT "SEEMED" TO ME LIKE IT HELPED A LITTLE UNDER SOME CONDITIONS. AGAIN, THIS MAY NOT BE A BIG HELP EITHER WAY, BUT AGAIN, IT SEEMED TO HELP AND IT DEFINITELY DID NOT APPEAR TO CRAMP ANYTHING, SO I WENT WITH THIS.

THOUGH I HAVE BUILT DOZENS AND DOZENS OF ROMS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW THIS ROM WORKS FOR YOU, AS THIS IS THE FIRST ROM I HAVE ACTUALLY POSTED FOR PUBLIC USE.
I THINK YOU WILL BE PLEASED!!!
Think it would help everyone,
if you listed what apps were included in the ROM.
this ROM looks very unorganized, not many new features or apps (from what I see because you didn't list any) and the whole overall look of it is ugly. Sorry to be such a harsh critic but there are some better ROMs on this site then this, nice try though.
Alos, if you were going for stability over features etc.. I don't know why anybody really focuses on that anymore. Every ROM i've flashed with my Kaiser has been stable because It is a fast device. With my Hermes, Stability was very important esp. with Mobile 6, but i think the kaisers hardware can handle a lot.

Judging from your previous posts you have a pretty cruddy outlook all together.

Responding To Feedback...
Hey All Thanks Alot For Supporting The Rom, I Know Many People Like Different Things, But I Really Felt That Many People May Enjoy This One Due To Its "application Rich" Content And Still Having Enough Availible Memory To Do What They Need.
As I Said Before, The Today Screen Is Somewhat Cluttered, But That Is Easily Fixed With A Couple Screen Taps To The Settings Page... I Wanted To Include Enough Today Plugins To Hopefully Suit "everyone", Or At Least Give Them More Options.
well, Thanks To Anyone Willing To Try It And Provide Feedback, If Anyone Likes This Rom, i Am Working On A 6.1 Based Rom At This Time, And Dont Know When It Will Be Finished, But I Would Be Glad To Post It If Anyone Out There Is The Slightest Bit Interested!
Thanks In Advance From The Fabiii Team/thequartzguy For Providing Us The Feedback To Better Our Roms!!!

Brick with this ROM
I am a ROM addict and this ROM just brick my fone. Actually had to return it to ATT and buy a new $600 Kaiser. The install was going fine up until 78% and it simply stopped and would not restart and went to Bootloader. I tried the MTYY and other device to try to restart but to no avail. Nevertheless, I concede that it could also have been my computer that malfunctioned but I doubt it.
Respond To "bricked" Phone...
taurusco, I Am Sorry To Hear About Your Troubles, And Hope You Have Straightened Everything Out. However, I Have Now Flashed This Rom Successfully On 6 Different Att Tilts And 2 Htc Kaisers And All Have Completed And Operated Perfectly. Again, Sorry About Your Troubles, But I Honestly Don't Believe This Rom Has Caused Your Ill Issues.
If Anyone Has Any Other Feedback On This Rom, Or Any Other Issues, Please Post, I Would Like To Know!
We're not allowed to cook VC 1.6 in. While there were "bundled" versions for other phones, it can only be purchased from m$ for Kaiser. VC 1.6 is warez and must be removed unless you have cooked in a trial version or one that requires a key. Sorry
Otherwise, looks like a nice effort! Have you considered adding in UC capability? UC can be found here
Cooking Ms Vc 1.6....
Ok Sleuth, I See What You Mean On This App... No Problem, I Am Taking It Out As We Speak And Re-uploading The Rom... Thanks Alot For The Info, Please Let Me Know If There Are Any Other "notable" Issues.
-thx
HATERS.....
All negative feedback on this subject is retarded...someone out of the kindness of the heart takes time out of their busy schedule to make and post a rom...and some moron wants to put it down...all he wants is feedback on glitches/non working apps. Way to go quartzguy and keep up the good work!
I have flashed this rom multiple times and have had no "BRICK" issues...maybe need to reconsider that your computer had something to do with it....moreso, i have flashed every version of every rom quartzguy has cooked(at least 12) and have never bricked or had any major problems whatso ever...feel safe when flashing a FABIII rom...and thank you to all the people that have helpful feedback.

Just had it do it to me, I am currently flashing another rom in a hope to save the phone. I am at 66% currently.
To Those With Rom Flashing Issues....
HEY GUYS, TO YOU THAT ARE HAVING FLASHING PROBLEMS, ARE YOU CHANGING THE NAME OF THE FILE PROPERLY AS TO WHICH WAY YOU ARE FLASHING? IE. FLASHING WITH CUSTOM RUU, FILE SHOULD BE "RUU_signed.NBH" and FLASHING WITH MICRO SD, FILE NAME SHOULD BE "KAISIMG.NBH"
OTHERWISE, NOT SURE WHY YOU WOULD BE HAVING AN ISSUE. I HAVE PERSONALLY FLASHED THIS TO MORE THAN 6 TILTS AND 2 KAISERS, AND I HAVE GOTEN FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS THAT HAVE ALSO FLASHED FINE, NO COMPLICATIONS...
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR FEEDBACK ON THIS AND/OR ANY OTHER ISSUES OR SUCCESS STORIES, SO THAT I CAN GET AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHY A COUPLE OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD AN ISSUE. THANKS.
ALSO, I HAVE ADDED A LINK TO THIS ROM (THE COMPLETE ROM WITH NBH FILE ONLY AS WELL) WHICH INCLUDES A FOLDER THAT IS ALREADY SETUP FOR MICRO SD FLASHING AND A FOLDER SETUP FOR ACTIVESYNC FLASHING, SO IT IS EASY TO CHOOSE WHAT YOU NEED. ALSO, I HAVE ADDED INSTRUCTIONS AS TEXT FILES IN EACH FOLDER IN THAT LINK TO HELP ANYONE WHO NEEDS A GUIDE WITH FLASHING!
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!
What I am interested in doing is taking multiple cab files and then merging them into a single cab file so rather than having to install multiple theme tabs i could just install a single file which would make the whole process simpler after a hard reset to get all my things reinstalled.
I'm a bit of a noob and have searched through the forum but havent really found a noob's walkthrough although i have found usefull posts they arent exactly what i'm looking for, i'm sure other members would find this really usefull too if its at all possible.
It could also be helpful for installing multiple applications at a time.
I appreciate that people dont have the time to sit and talk me through the whole process but any information you could give would really be appreciated.
I've attached the files that i would be interested in merging. I'm not looking for anyone to do the work for me i'm just interested in any knowledge of the process that you may have to offer.
Thx
Alex

Simplest and easiest thing to do is to use UC to install all these cabs automated style when the ROM boots up. I am assuming you are using a ROM which is UC compliant (all the official ones arent.....the cooked ROMs are mostly UC compliant though).
The 'hard' way is analyzing the cab's -> extracting files/reg-entries -> rebuilding the cab-files to one cab.
Theoritically it's possible with a program like WinCE Cabmanager but it is a hell of job I think.
I would go for the UC-option mentioned by MrVanx. I use it myself and it works like a threat (you have to get familiar with wap-provisioning and stuff but it's worth the journey)
Ive tried using a few of the cooked roms over the past couple of weeks but to be honest they dont work all that well for me, none of them seem to work with msn (which is something i use all the time) i always get error messages saying that it cant find a data connection even through wifi which is always setup properly as i can search the net quite easily and have verified that the wifi is working and searched through the rom threads for fix's and all ive seen so far is that this seems to be a bit of a problem for a number of users, some fixes work for certain members but it doesnt for others, unfortunatly i'm one of the others.
Currently using Vodafone UK 1.90.161.5 stock rom.
I think the WinCE Cabmanager approach mite be the best option for me as i'm still a bit of a noob with regards to things and as most of the cabs i'm interested in merging are simple theme cabs so it shouldnt be that much of a task (gulps)
Are there any good tutorials that i could use for WinCE Cabmanager?
I'll have a search myself to see what i can come up with but in the past i've found it quite hard to find things in the forum and most of the time i stumble across certain "gems" by following links in peoples signatures.
Thanks for the info its much appreciated.
Alex
Over on the Kaiser section there was a user named bengalih, who made an automated installer called Sashimi. Although Bengalih has been banned, his work is still floating around. Check out this thread, or do a search for Sashimi. In theory, it should work for the Raphael, since it is still a Win Mobile device. Hope that helps. I might add, that right before Bengalih was banned, he stripped his Sashimi guides from his posts on xda, but they are available here.
This does look like the type of thing i am looking for unfortunately all his posts are just "..........................." but i regged on the other site and got the software so i'm going to go check it out and see how it works. Thanks for that
Alex
Just a quick question but does your mobile connection (Vodafone UK) allow you to use msn (or to that matter any IM program) or is it just http stuff only?
Tmobile wnw doesnt allow IM software over the data connection unless you use wnw+ so i wonder if this is the case with vodfone aswell?
Yeah it does, it also allows me to use skype too. Unfortunalty its the only ROM that does allow me to use msn although i havent tested skype as this is my secondary IM app.
In theory to make a theme (cab) i tried to extract files from a few cabs, files including:
1AA884~1.004
1BBFDC~1.001
1E29E8~1.005
4E6705~1.002
5A7AE8~1.015
5B86C9~1.016
5C27FF~1.017
etc
Then i used "QuickCab 1.0" to add all the extracted files from a couple of cab files, i directed QuickCab 1.0 to install the files to the Windows directory and the process made the new cab file with no problems however i tried to install the cab file that it had created but my TF3D didnt change at all even after a restart.
I'm trying to merge NoTopCurtain.cab-NoCurtains.cab-GlassClock_v1.cab-Pamas Transparant Slider.CAB & NeonIcon.cab
By looking at the xml file it looked like all the 90 files should be installed to the Windows directory.
Any idea of what i am doing wrong?
Thx
Alex
try cabmanager. You will see the actual files. And there is very logical registry structure.
I do not have a tutorial for the program but it's not that hard. You can export files (right mouse click) and reg-entries (under 'file'). Put those all together (import of reg-entries is also possible!) Adding files gives you a simple window with where to put the files on your ppc.
It is not that hard and you will be in control of the proces instead of working with the encrypted files you are doing now...
made dozens of (working) cab's this way myself and I'm no einstein!
Good luck
@merten3000 thanks for that for the next 30 days i can make working cabs, i initially seen your post and checked the program but noticed it was only a 30 day trial so i never bothered then with your last post when u mentioned "encrypted" files that sort of made sense when i originally seen the file names of the files i was extracting where as they are now extracting properly and i created a working cab, thanks very much.
Dont suppose you know of a free program that will do the same job? Money is tight and cant justify buying this app.
Alex
The simplest thing to do, for me, would be to take the stock rom that you like, extract and recook it making only the changes needed to make it UC compliant.
That way you get your rom just as it was, and can run all your cabs. Shouldn't be much work either. (well, it wouldnt be on the Kaiser - not used Raphael kitchens etc, but assume it is relatively easy)
