Activesync connecting for less than 10 seconds? - General Topics

I have been trying to sync my O2 mini with both the bluetooth and via USB but can't seem to connect for more than 10 seconds. The PC indicates "looking for changes" and the blue bar moves across appprox 5mm then you hear the disconnect chime. Can anyone please help?

Activesync Drop out
Yep, disable your Symantec Products!!
One of the Symantec programs which prevents applications from starting, like Spam and Spyware. At some stage you checked the option to block the program from startup either wcescomm.exe or one of the others required. The activesync connection requires both of these to be able to complete the sync.
Found this a few months ago, when helping a friend who had blocked one portion and not the other, just can't remember exactly which program I checked.
However, If you are using any spyware stopper or something similar it could be preventing startup applications from starting, i.e. wcescomm.exe

Checked the spyware etc.. all OK. Hard reset fixed the problem.

Activesync problem

Lately, when I connect my Asus P525 to my PC or my laptop to Activesync, the following error message always come out:
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
I have tried to reconnect and soft reset my device and still the error comes out. I have also deleted all partnerships in both the PCs and my device and still same error.
Can anyone help my out on this?
i have the same problem with my tmobile mda. started with activesync 4.1 and even the new 4.5. only way i found to solve this is to completely unistall AS then go the AS directory and delete all the trash left behind in the install (do not delete any app folders in there).
reboot
reinstall AS
reboot
plug in device. yay!
stops working again....rinse and repeat.
yea. its a lame workaround but there you have it.
Thanks wergeld, I will try your suggestion ASAP!
I tried the above steps to no avail. Did it twice.
try doing a soft reset if you can of the asus then retry. all i know is that activesync is touchy. if you are using a usb connection make sure it is not going through a hub. just straight out the usb port on computer to usb in on the device.
this is something i have run across a lot. even on un-modded rom phones. right now mine is giving up the ghost while installing the "updated usb drivers" sucky. but its one of those things where you just bang on it till it works.
Ok, will try again. Thanks.
Tried to soft reset the device, uninstalled AS, deleted files in AS folder, reboot, installed AS, reboot, synch, same problem.
hrmm. i am sorry. i am at a loss for this one. i know AS is tricky but i have no other ideas on this. anyone else want to take a shot?
I would like to try to hard reset my device, but since I can't use AS, how can I restore my appointments and contacts after a hard reset?
assuming you had a relationship on your computer before you can re-sync it if you can get AS to work. do not try the hard reset yet.
did some more looking. and found this site: AS 4 FAQ
a helpful one was the fixmapi.exe step.
try all of these first then hard reset as a last resort.
the more i deal with AS the more i look at my SuSE machine with love.
"synchronization could not be completed. Try again later"; "Ondersteuningscode: 8007
OK This is a pain. i've got simmilar problems.
Over the weekend i upgraded to faria wm6 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297762) which forced my to go to active sync 4.5.
Here the fun starts .....
I have a desktop Medion and a laptop Dell D800. The Desktop is connected to my router via cable and the Laptop via wireless.
On both PC's internet works without problems. Before upgrading i could connect via usb to both machines and sync to my office exchange server.
Now, Activesync over usb connecting to either PC fails with the message:
"synchronization could not be completed. Try again later"
"Ondersteuningscode: 80072f7d"
If however i disable all "exchange synchronisation" items as agenda, tasks etc and limit to say favorites. Then AS completes sussesfully.
To add to the confusion. If i sync using WiFi or GPRS via my QTec directly i can sync just fine to exchange. Pushmail works.
I just cant get it to work via usb which i prefer since WiFi drains the battery and GPRS is expensive.
Solutions tried include:
* Uninstalling AS (both dutch and or Englich)
* Deleting all leftovers files from in the
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync" directory
* Cleaning the registry for leftovers
* Re-installing AS4.5 (both dutch and or Englich)
* removing and restoring sync partnerships
* Running the AS diagnostics (which report NO errors).
* emptying the exchange server files.
cleaning agenda, tasks, adresses, trash,
to have a empty exchange server
(of course i made a backup so i could restore afterwards)
I've googled but found nothing that helps.
I'm at a halt here, anybody any suggestions
You didn't mention what Operating System you're running on your computer and whether you're running any firewall software on your computer.
The newer versions of ActiveSync actually establish a network connection to sync. Quite a few of the Firewall programs have issues with this since it creates ports they don't know what to do with. You can avoid firewall problems by adding ActiveSync to the "allowed" programs list. Doing so will enable ActiveSync to create the ports it needs to sync, etc.
What you may be able to do in order to test whether it's your firewall is disable your firewall temporarily and then connect your device to the USB cable and see whether it syncs properly.
If you're running Windows XP SP2, the Windows Firewall is enabled by default and can be disabled by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Security Center and then clicking on the option to "Manage security settings for: Windows Firewall".
I hope this helps.
i am not familiar with exchange server or pushmail so i cannot help there. make sure you reboot each time you uninstall AS.
as for the firewall deal. i do not run one (oh nos!) on my pc that i connect to with AS since i am behind a heavy duty one on my router and i still have connection issues that force me to do the uninstall/reinstall dance. but i have never not been able to solve the issue with the dance.

THANKS this is getting ME somewhere i run NOD32 as antivirus on my desktop. If i turn of the IMON (internet monitoring) then sync goes fine.
Since active sync was already registred for maximum compatibility (which did not help) i added the address of my exchange server to the "maximal compatibility" list of servers. This does not help me either. Also disabling all "http protection" does not help.
Off to see what i can do without turning IMON totally off.

The site doesn't have the remedy for the error that I have.
I also disabled my Firewall, and still got the same error message.
Now, I would really like to do a hard reset, but don't know how to backup my contacts and appointments.
Got the same problem today. Last successful sync was on March 27th. I deleted all partnerships, repaired my Outlook-db, cleaned all ActiveSync-entries regarding partnerships in the registry of my Universal AND on my PC. I now disabled NOD32's IMON to see whether AS works again after a reboot.
Damn ActiveSync...
Cheers,
-mARKUS
UPDATE: Disabling IMON didn't bring me any further. ActiveSync get's the Universal's name, then comes the "Retrieving settings..." and suddenly it breaks with the stupid "Synchronization cannot be completed successfully..." message.

So as far as I've read I now have two options: hard-reset my device, reinstall everything and hope it works again -- OR -- uninstall Outlook + AS and reinstall and hope it works. Thank you, Microsoft!
good
Excellent work. Easy to understand.
hard rest...before doing anything..sync.......all will sync fine.
As long as device names are the same......you'll be good to go.
The problem is, I have added a lot of new contact and appointments in my device that is not yet synched with my PC. If I hard reset, all the new data will be gone.
So how can I restore back the new data after a hard reset?

FIXED - ActiveSync not working via USB on WM6 Wizards

This is for everyone out there who upped to WM6 on wizard models and found ActiveSync not recognising your fone over USB. Download ActiveSyncMode.cab (sometimes named ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab) and install it on your Fone. Run it - Start/Programs/ActiveSyncMode.exe -
http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB
Select 'USB Serial Sync Mode'. Now try connecting your fone and it should work.
I tried almost 50 posts and advices over 3 days and this one worked like a charm. I know there must be other issues with other fones which have different solutions. Please feel free to add to this thread all/any verified solutions.
hi,
i have tried it, but it doesnt work. do you have made spacially things to get i work ?
Not really. Installed ActiveSyncMode. Ran it and selected USB mode instead of RNDIS mode. This fixed the problem for me with a WM6 upgraded 8125 and 2 other friends with Original ROM 8125 and Original ROM MDA.
i unchecked "Enable advanced network functionality" in USB to PC settings on my phone and got activesync to work for me when i was having trouble

I had to reinstall WM6 and now ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB no longer fixes my connectivity problem. I'm getting fed up with WM6.
I have tried everything else and will now try this. I did not realize that this was such a problem, until I started researching to solve my own problem. So good luck to me.
Fixed it with my own build. So far. I still have to try and sync with another computer. That is where the biggest problem has been for me, is syncing with two computers.
Under Vista 64, I normally have McAfee firewall at the highest setting and also have Windows Firewall on.
At first, after upgrading to WM6, I could not sync. I then found some registry fix procedures and tried them but it did not work. I then installed ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab and it allowed me to sync. Maybe that combined with the prior registry fix might have allowed me to sync.
However, after I uninstalled WM6 and reinstalled it, I could not sync anymore. I installed ActiveSyncMode.sa.cab again, but it did not work this time. I did not try the registry fix this time because I can't find the procedures, which I originally found online. I can't remember how to find them again.
I then turned off both Windows Firewall and McAfee firewall and I was able to sync again.
I then reinstalled Windows Mobile Device Center while having the firewalls off, hoping it would allow the installations to complete properly.
I then turned on Windows Firewall but it was still blocking the sync.
I restored Windows Firewall back to default and it made it worse. I then had to reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center and was able to sync again with Windows Firewall on. Often I would have to disconnect the cradle to establish reconnection.
Next, I needed to figure out how to turn on McAfee firewall and allow it to sync.
I then contacted McAfee and they told me to exclude Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) port 5000 and Windows File Sharing (NETBIOS) port 137-139. It didn't work exactly until I lowered the firewall one level. What all this networking stuff means, I don't know. I'll have to do more searches on them.
I now need to figure out how to put McAfee firewall back at maximum level while still allowing me to sync.

After doing all the steps above, I found that all I needed to do was lower the McAfee firewall level one notch to be able to sync. However, I'm still going to figure out why I had previously been able to sync at the maximum security level. There must be some exclusion that got remove that I need to add again.
Activesync and HTC s620 issues.
This issues is driving me completely insane, So far this thread is about the only related info on the problem too. I find it hard to believe there aren’t more people out there with these issues, anyway here’s were I’m at:
Got a HTC s620 Smartphone from BT, Active sync simply didn’t work from day one and me being an IT support guy I haven’t been able to resist going back to the issue.
For over a week I have made pretty much no progress at all, I can’t find a activesyncmode.sa.cab file for my phone that works yet so got nowhere with that, the HTC website is about as useful as a chocolate fire guard.
The first leap of progress was spotting a trick on here of disabling the advanced network functionality on the phone its self.
It was baffling me at first why my computer was picking up the phone as if it was a network adapter. (And trust me I tried all sorts of in depth stuff down that avenue). It makes sense now though that the Smartphone can be setup to act as a network adapter/modem. Hence now I’ve disabled the advanced network functionality on my phone Active sync instantly make noises and hey presto ‘Connected’ and then a few moments later I’ve now got some other critical error
So my quest continues, but I will get to the bottom of this if it kills me!
So for the record, anyone with a HTC s620 Smartphone running Windows Mobile 6, before you do anything else do this:-
Start
Settings
6. Connections
7. More…
4. USB to PC
(Remove the bloody tick from box) Enable advanced network functionality
I will report back with my next hurdle…
OK, as much as I’d played around with my firewall it would turn out that this is the second culprit causing my problems. I tried installing Activesync on my Laptop and Desktop and had the same errors, however the only thing those to computer have in common is the Iolo System Shield installed. Last night to just ensure I wasn’t going mad, I tried it on my wife’s laptop and hey presto! It worked first time. So naturally, I’ve uninstalled the Iolo System Shield from my computer and bingo, worked straight away.
This is annoying however, because I did everything from the Microsoft Help setting up exceptions etc. in my firewall. But there you go.
In brief:
Check your device has the advanced network functionality disabled.
Uninstall your 3rd party firewall and test to pin point the cause, then you know what you’re dealing with.
Just a second thought of advice, one of the first things I tried was disabling the firewall, from my experience that wasn’t enough, it had to be uninstalled to get it to work. Before anyone else goes down the hair pulling road of trying anything and everything under the sun, uninstall your firewall/system guard software. At least if it works after that you know exactly what is causing the problem.
Then getting it to work with the firewall installed is something you can focus on possible in conjunction with the software vendor.
I fixed teh same problem by unchecking the advanced box but .....
after oving back to wm5, I cant connect as well. I look for the working solution from WM6, but I cant find the menue to disable the advance usb connection.
It looks like that is the problem to sync with vista 64
Hope somebody has a idea.
thx in advance
My USB connection to activesync stopped working. (although at my second pc it still works OK)
It works via InfraRed though!
I think this USB problem started when I was trying to connect via bluetooth.
Don't you just hate ActiveSync!?
Well, maybe the problem is with Windows XP... because it doesn't recognizes the PDA.
Anybodies help? Thanks in advance.
No file ActiveSyncMode.cab !
Help
No worries, new link:
http://www.pcdphones.com/downloads/ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB
Also attached to be safe
would be a shame to let a useful thread go into some archive, so I'm resurrecting this oldie.
Also, I remedied this activesync issue with a more straigtforward fix. Fresh flash of 6.5. After deleting all the USB devices in the device mgr (didn't help), I saw there was a WM6.5 setting for default behavior on PC Connection (or something similar to that). Changed it from "setup" to "sync" & that silly white toggling screen went away and allowed a flash back to 6.1.

Startup folder Contents - need explanation please

Hey Mates,
I was looking through my \windows\startup folder and I noticed a few .lnk files, some of which I didn't know what they were for. If I can determine that they aren't neccessary maybe removing them could speed things up a little. Here are the links I have so far:
AEBPlus.lnk - this is a great button mapping prog
PKG.lnk -???
poutlook.lnk - Pocket Outlook, I'm guessing it needs to be there
sddeaemon.lnk -???
spbmobileshell.lnk - SPB mobile shell obviously
I was also wondering if I removed poutlook will activesysnc stop running on it's own. I tried the sched trick to keep it from running all the time but that doesn't seem to work. I shut it down and then it keeps showing up in the task manager. Thanks in advance to any help, Cheers!

That link is for WM Standard, not really applicable in this situation.
The Sddaemon is most likely the drivers to recognize your sd card.
As for Activesync you can try the following:
If you go into settings/System/Memeory and check what programs are running your more then likely will see active sync. This is due to the following fact: ActiveSync on Pocket PC side with its default settings does following - Pocket PC ActiveSync activates itself every five or ten minutes and tries to sync with the desktop.
So if you dont want your battery to be drain again, you need to prevent the ActiveSync from waking up the device every five minutes. To do this read the lines below and follow the instructions:
1. Start ActiveSync on your Pocket PC.
2. Tap "Menu", then "Add Server Source"
3. Configure a server source with a fake IP address, id and password - you can enter anything you like, it doesn't matter
4. After that you will notice that "Menu -> Schedule..." item is no longer greyed out.
5. Change your schedule to manual under both fields.
6. You can now delete your fake server - your changes to the schedule will remain in effect. ActiveSync will no longer be able to drain your battery.
Also make sure your error reporting is turned off.

Thanks JN,
I tried the fake server method but activesync still seems to start up on its own. Does windows live or gmail need to call it up when they sync? it seems the polaris is the first device I've had that persistently keeps activesync running even when i shut it down.
btw, my sd card was still functional even when i removed sddaemon.lnk from the startup folder and did a soft reset??? weird. We still don't know what PKG.lnk is either.
@gatordent,
My mistake, the Sddaemon is the Cyberon voice speed dial that comes with most HTC devices.
As for AS, I don't use W.Live and do you have google mail set for auto mail retrieval? Maybe when the device goes to get the mail at your specific time, AS launches itself?
JNGold,
Alright, here is what I've done, I removed sddaemon.lnk AND PKG.lnk from startup and left the others. So far, so good... seems to have saved about 3% of memory upon soft resetting. I left outlook.lnk b/c messaging broke when i tried to startup without it. AS still starts on it's own immediately after a soft reset. The TC is definitely a little peppier.

Activesync connection wizard will not start

Hello all... I'm a total newbie to Windows Mobile and this site. Hopefully I've found the right place to post this. I have Win XP SP2 with activesync 4.5 and HTC touch pro (att fuze). My device connects to the PC fine but ONLY as a guest (tried this with someone else's device as well, same issue). I plugged my device into my co-workwer's PC and the got the option to set up a sync partnership. This option has never appeared on my PC. I've deleted/reinstalled activesync multiple times and tried other suggestions found here (checking & unchecking "advanced network functioality" and "ask about connection type" in USB to PC settings on the device). Prior to all of this I had software called Intelatrac installed on my PC. This is a "task tracking" program which uses activesync to connect to a Windows Mobile PDA device. I don't use this software in my current job so I uninstalled it. Somthing in the Intelatrac/Active sync set up is possibly the issue. I've connencted multiple devices to my PC and to another PC which has Intelatrac. NEVER is there an option to set up a partnership. Only guest connections automatically occur. All menu options in activesync except for "connection settings" are "grayed out" ("Syncronize", "Mobile Device", "Delete Moblie Device"). Any ideas what to look for? I have tried my IT department for the past month but have yet to find anyone who has a clue. Sorry for the long description.

Actually, long descriptions are best to identify problems
This is just a suggestion, but maybe this Intelatrac software left something in the registry that is being used by ActiveSync. My advise to you would be to first uninstall ActiveSync and then look for entries for this program in the registry and delete them if you find them. You could use autoruns to see if there are any processes/dll loading that shouldn't be there in the first place as well. Hope this helps...
Thanks for the reply... a problem with something left in the registry is exactly what I thought might be the problem. This being my PC at work, I don't have authorization to even look at the registry let alone edit it. Only our IT "help" desk group can don that . Through unofficial channels I got access and found that there are at least 20 references to "Intelatrac" left in the registry. If I can ever get these folks to look at the problem I'll report on the results. Thanks again!

[Q] Time critical issue. need to reset sync connectivity device side

I need a method of completely resetting any and all aspects of Microsoft active sync on the device side without resorting to a hard reset.
i do not care how long this takes or how many registry entries i need to change but i really really really need to get this sync issue fixed and every where else i turn has the same tired 5 step sorry your screwed speech and i have tried it many times.
please someone give me more advanced debugging that can actually help me fix this.
ok now that my pathetic rant is out of the way the issue is one of the classic device is plugged in. all drivers have been reinstalled multiple times and while the phone says it is connected windows mobile device manager says that there are no connected devices and will not display a dialogue to add a new connection. Bluetooth syncing is similarly impaired
steps taken to date.
deleted all current pairings
uninstalled all drivers and windows mobile device center allowed windows update to reinitialize everything.
tried plugging the phone in using active sync with both advanced network functionality and with this option disabled
so that is everything any of the trouble shooting sites have mentioned so far. at this point i believe the issue is at the phone level and has something to do with the network portion of the usb connection process as the network driver for the phone shows that the computer is sending data but receiving no packets from the phone.
all fire walls on my system have already been disabled.
