O2 English --> O2 Trad. Chinese successful - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

I have successfully flashed an O2 english machine into a traditional chinese one. I just wanted to point couple things out that slowed me down during upgrading:
1) if your ntrw shows something like "usage... etc" that means you have an incorrect version. Please download version 2.0
2) when replacing the information in the hex editor, you do not have to highlight the part to be replaced, just click once to the beginning of the header, then click paste, it'll replace by itself. I tried to highlight the part to be replaced and delete and paste again.. etc with no luck. Remember it has to look like the original, 3-4 lines of 00 then ff ff.. etc, if you did it wrong it will only have the ff ff parts right after the 416 bytes (this worked for me)
3) when putting in the SD card, it does not necessarily give you the prompt to flash in several seconds, i've seen it pop up after several minutes, so give it some time and not panic
Those were just some of my experiences that I thought could be amended to the procedures to clarify some things, because one would have to dig through many topics to find the above solutions as I did (which i don't understand why the authors won't edit their procedures to make it perfect).
Anyhow, I have one final question. I read the thread on how to remove T-mobile's customizations somewhere, but how do I remove O2's cusomization? If I can figure this out I'll make my O2 w/ dopod rom into an O2 trad. chinese rom. Thnx

Here's another thing I wanted to ask, when I change the rom and flahs w/ the cht.xxx file from ftp (the O2 rom) does it include the ext roms? Or should I d/l them cab by cab and install separately? Or does this need to be unlocked like some other threads say?

What brand and size of SD card had you used?

i used the lexar 256mb bundled w/ my o2
i've also used panasonic high speed pro 512mb on another machine
but i don't know how that relates to my ques~

The Most Direct Method to get BigStorage

So far, we know that BigStorage can be created for 1.11 or 1.12 ROMs by replacing 80 00 with b8 01 at the following two locations:
English version (i-mate JAM, T-mobile compact, etc.)
7e32 and 211e32e
French version (qtek, etc.)
7e32 and 212332e
German version (T-mobile compact, etc.)
7e32 and 213232e
Traditional Chinese version (Dopod 818, O2 Asia, etc.)
7e4a and 1fc232e
Simplified Chinese version (Dopod 818, etc.)
7e42 and 1fc232e
It seems that the two locations change with the language, rather than the brand. Older ROM versions have different locations.
Could anybody provide the locations of other language versions for the reference of those who need them?
Please note that some have reported success in creating the BigStorage by replacing the bytes at the first location only, leaving the second location unchanged.
For those who need a summary of the steps:
1. Dump your original ROM to SD card. (romupdate.exe and ntrw.exe)
2. Edit your own ROM. (hex editor)
i.e. search for the two locations in the ROM with "02 00 00 80 00 20" and replace 80 00 with b8 01.
3. Write the edited ROM back to the Magician and hard reset your machine. (ntrw.exe)
That's it!
- no more downloading of others' BigStorage ROMs
- no need to replace the first 416 bytes
- no more unsolicited splash screens
- a simple, safe, do-it-yourself method to create your own BigStorage based on whatever ROM version you already have or upgraded.
Thank you so much.
I have an Italian ROM. Can anybody give me some help?
Talents,
A good assurance for people....
Nice one
I put this together with bits taken from this forum
Does anyone know if this will work for older versions of the ROM (i.e. 1.03 or 1.06)? I still am having problems with the GPRS with the newer ROMs so I would like to apply the BigStorage to older ROMs.
Thank you,
F
I used this method on the 1.03 wwe version and it is working perfectly. I used the same method as described. Found the two locations made the changes etc. and all is well.
Thanks, I will try it out

You seem to have an old version of ntrw. Get the latest one (2.0) from this forum's FTP server.
Cheers
Daniel
Worked for me with French_11202_125_11210 8)
The first reboot took more than 5 min though.
glad to know that it works on your French ROM.
We should have warned everyone to be patient with the first boot up after upgrading. It takes 5-10 minutes to format the BigStorage, with the screen apparently "stuck" at the splash screen.
I've found a .nb1 file for BigStorage on the ftp server of this forum. I think it's the BigStorage version for ROM 1.12. Is it possible to use that file and enable BigStorage without a cardreader?
For example, when you execute the upgrade program an TEMP directory is created with a bunch of files in it. If I were to copy those files (which also include some .nb1 files) and replace one of those with the one I found on the ftp, would that give me BigStorage?
Welrogie,
I was actually thinking the same thing as you...
Although if it were possible, I'm sure someone would have posted somewhere on this site anyway (?)
BigStorager work great for 1.12 FR ROM
many thanks
your post is excellent, did it to a 1.12 and no probs, please just check the pdf instruction sheet as it mentions 2 different file names, 1 to download from SD card and another to upload, maybe I misread it but I just uploaded the modified version of the file I downloaded and it all went swimmingly. cheers
Just carrying out a few 'test' searches on rom files to locate the necessary information...
On the 3 that I have performed the search on, i seem to find the bytes ok but the locations never matches the one stated by Talents and others. Does it matter that they appear in different locations than the ones specified?
Thanks.

Brand spanking new UK T-Mobile MDA compact Rom 1.12.00 WWE !

Uploaded. brand spanking new T-Mobile UK MDA compact ROM
(Now in the magician uploads sectiom)
R 1.12.00
G 1337.42
D 1.12_WWE
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Magician/
Full rom extracted using romupdate to 256mb SD card and extracted from the card using ntrw.exe. MDA was brand new unused and this rom has not been modified in any way.
Anyone tried this ROM? T-Mobile have had the most stable ROMS in the past ...
Maybe you misunderstood, this ROM was extracted from a brand new MDA compact that I took delivery of on Friday. It is not a modified ROM or a Qtek, its a genuine T-Mobile ROM on an MDA compact part no 99HAK026-00.
I extracted it wth romupdate.exe, copied from my sd card (256MB) using ntrw.exe and ftp straight up.
downloaded half of it last night but can't seem to download the rest today - please share again

Hi
So many people downloaded it that it blew my download bandwidth limit with my hosting company. I'll copy it to the ftp.xda-developers.com site, probably best place for it anyway.
Where abouts on the ftp site have you put it, and whats it called?
Thanks
Uploading it now to the uploads section, should be there in a few minutes
i cant find it too.
Cant wait to get it though!
Don't suppose T-mobile have applied the BigStorage hack by any chance??!!
Joking aside- thanks for taking the time to upload it Bobster.
thanks for sharing this.
At least someone has been good enough to since its quite clear T-mobile have no intentions of providing any updates to current users.

Few minutes is a good joke.... ;-) 256 MB are quite a much off stuff....
An other question is, why uploading twice? One time in the Upload folder and one time in the upload/Magician folder....
I'm going to split the file in the right size and will move it then in the Magician folder.....
Regards
Stefan
sorry for being a complete noob, but how do i install this .nb1? Last time i flashed my firmware it was a windows exe that installed it all for me.
The nb1 file is a ROM dump, which in this case you would have to follow the procedure as shown in one of stickies 'How to upgrade your rom to latest one' (or whatever it's called).
Cant seem to find the uploaded new T-Mobile MDA Compact rom?
Is it uploaded??

This link doesn't work for me... Any ideas why?
Some users experience problems using FTP via Internet Explorer. Try using a FTP client software- FTP Surfer is a free one- can't remember the exact link- try a search in Google.
Any other FTP client should also be fine.
Also make sure you are using the correct login details (change them from file menu in Internet Explorer>
user name: xda
password: xda
!!! NEWS !!!
It has finally been uploaded and is in the Magician section of the uploads folder on the ftp site
at
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Magician/
I just re-loaded it on an oder MDA compact and it works fine , i find it always works if
1) Make a copy of your existing ROM on the sda crd using romupdate.exe as this seems to format your SD card correctly.
2) Copy your existing rom from the sd card using ntrw.exe BUT DO NOT FORMAT OR ERASE YOUR SD IN ANY WAY
3) Copy the new ROM onto your SD using ntrw.exe
4) Insert the SD card and boot to bootloader, about 8 seconds later it will promt you to flash
It is not a bigstorage rom , its a normal T-Mobile with extended ROM and seems to have the improved bluetooth and a two device comparison (old and new together) shows faster navigation around menus.
Good luck downloaing,

Need to get back to WWE!

I made quite the mistake yesterday. I have an MDA compact that came from T-Mobile Germany and originally had german as the default language. It was easy to change to english by going to regional settings & selecting english.
So I didn't think twice about using a German T-Mobile ROM upgrade - and now I'm stuck with GERMAN!!! Regional settings doesn't change the language any more! what the heck?
Sooooo, I need a WWE .exe ROM that will load - I tried a UK WWE and I was told by the installer that I had the wrong language and install could not continue. Is there a way to go back to WWE? I don't care at this point what version.....
Also, I have downloaded from the FTP server other ROM versions but they are all .nb1 files and, despite my best efforts, I can't understand the proper way to install these. I've looked thru lots of posts and found one set of instructions but they were very hard to understand. HELP!!
funkynugget,
I have been in your shoes, in the exact situation as a matter of fact. I am very familiar with PPC but had never flashed anything in my life( well there was this one time a few years back but uuhhhh.. thats for another story) Anyways just down load the preferred WWE, I am using the latest Jam rom which works great with my German Tmobile. You will also need to download the MaUpgradeUt.exe file as well. Do a google search to find that one by just typing in MaUpgradeUt.exe Now unzip or unrar (whatever) the rom that you choose to use so it breaks down the files seperately. In it you will see the MaUpgradeUt.exe file. Remove that one a replace it with the newly downloaded one. Click on the and enjoy. You may come up with langauge or country error. dont worry if that happens just restart, it will work the second time.
Todd
thank you sooo much for the advice. i will for sure give it a try. i've downloaded another version of the ROM from orange and i'll probably end up just using that BUT i would prefer to use the i-mate ROM, from what i hear it fixes all kinds of little bugs. only problem is it isn't available on the FTP server and i have no other access. do you have it? can you post it to the FTP server here on xda?
once again, thanks for the help!
i've done some research to find a downloadable 'maUpgradeUt.exe' file and i'm starting to wonder if it matters where i get it & what type. you suggest downloading one to replace the one that comes with the WWE ROM but how do i know i found the correct 'maUpdateUt.exe' language/file?
funkynugget,
I tried but it said I do not have permission to upload file. Do you have an FTP I could upload to, it would be my pleasure as I also have received help from this site and would be lost without it.
Todd
'maUpgradeUt.exe'
funkynugget,
I am trying to attach the 'maUpgradeUt.exe' file, Im not sure it will work and I hope its OK to do this, we will see.
Now unzip or unrar (whatever) the rom that you choose to use so it breaks down the files seperately. In it you will see the MaUpgradeUt.exe file. Remove that one a replace it with the newly downloaded one. Click on the and enjoy.....
todd (or anyone else who can help!) when i unzip the files they either come out as an .exe or an nb1 file, not a series of files. how do i get the files separated? and when you say 'click on the and enjoy' click on what?

i second that. would this "very new rom" be...
here's a quote of the post:
"Here is how I got the rom to install without the devauth error.
1) use a hex editor on the rom file and search for the devauth.exe string e.g. 44 00 65 00 76 00 41 00
2) between the "devauth" and the "exe" you will see the hex "00 2e".
3) swap these bytes around so they are "2e 00" instead of "00 2e".
4) This will keep te same checksum but will not allow the devauth.exe to run. well it work in my case at least"
Hope it works
thinking better this aplies to the windows mobile 5 rom that leaked for the typhoon.
maybe crossbow (in case this new rom is indeed crossbow) has a different protection

please make screenshot from about in settings

so please forward a copy of the dumped file!

is this german rom or english?
thats not really a problem, it being german or english. that can quite easily be rectified (i hope) by changing the language/locality files with another from an english version of the smartphone rom, that sort of stuff ought to be generic
if it is crossbow.............................w00tage!

ok, have somebody a short description how the edit the dumped file that is on the sd card? which tool must i use to have what file format?

Snappy,
You need an SD card-reader, then you can
- use the psdread tool to dump the SD card image to a file on the PC
- edit the file with hex-editor
- use the psdwrite tool to dump the edited file back to SD card
psdread and psdwrite are in the XDA wiki.
Hope that helps
Keith
or after you dump the rom on the card you can use wmstorage and a tool to make a image for it.
..........
could you upload the image file somewhere, like on megaupload or rapidshare, so that other people can try it out?! please?! you'd be the answer to many of tornado users' prayers!

Totally agree. I guess a lot of people here in XDA-Developers would help you to get it done.
By the way, how does crossbow run in tornado? does it seems to be an early beta or similar to a final version?

Extended_ROM damaged or encrypted?

Hi all, I have a QTEK 9100.
I installed the cab to unhide the extended ROM folder and after a soft-reset I installed Windows Commander/CE 2.0 on my device and when I try to browse Extended_Rom folder I have access but some files names are "unreadable" (I mean, weird characters) and report an impossible file size (example 3.03 GB!)
My question is: Is my Extended_Rom damaged or encrypted? How can I get access to it?
i will say this again: using ext unhider almost always seems to end with corrupted ext rom. any change from TC too.
your case seems to be typical corruption situation.
Do you know how to recover/correct the Extended_ROM? or is it simply damaged???

Hi
Is not damaged...
But if you use your QTEK to write something in extended it seems damaged...
You have 2 ways....
Hard reset or reinstall extended...
Regards...
I didn't write anything in the Exended_ROM folder. I just wanted to know what it contains...
Is there a way to see the files inside Extended_Rom folder normally?... Where can I find my original Extended_ROM? Will a hard reset repair the Extended_ROM?
normal way to view extended rom is to type "\Extended_Rom\" in Total Commander without quotes...
I don't trust unlocking the extended rom...in all the wizard forums, there doesn't seem to be any advantage to doing so...I heard it was only 10 megs of space anyway, and I think a 2 gig sd card is acceptable...

yeah thats what i was trying to say ^^
to be more clearly
the extended rom is damaged and formatting it (hard reset or wipe storage) wont do the trick
u need to rebuilt the disk layout which is done by flashing t-mobile 2.26 rom as it has a good extended rom
Or simply flash any EXTrom.. you can make one for your self.. make an empty EXTrom.. and flash..
