O2 GPRS Billing not working? - General Topics

Hi there,
I have an XDA IIs on an O2 200 tariff that started around the middle of December. Just had my second full bill and I've not been charged for any GPRS usage for the second month running (despite using around 2MB each month, and only having a 100kb inclusive allowance).
Anyone know what's going on? Is this is a known 'feature' with O2's billing - or am I likely to get back charged for my GPRS usage at some point in the future?
Cheers,
Chris.

Back charging is not unknown, you could be in for a nasty shock or maybe its a nice gift from O2.

Same problem here, I got the phone mid part of last year and have not been charged a penny for GPRS!!

Well, my XDA II that is!

Something similar happened to me twice last year and then O2 stung me with £92 and £102 of charges months later. The O2 billing system is crap.

I think the inclusive allownace is 1MB.

So it's not just me...
I feel both relief and sadness to read that I'm not alone in being a victim of the O2 GPRS Billing scandal.
I bought an XDA2 with GPRS airtime package in November 2003.
A year later I started to receive BIG GPRS bills. (BIG= several hundreds of UK£).
I got straight on to the company I bought the package from, by phone, by email after email and they agreed that something was not quite right.
They told me they had dropped O2 because of the GPRS billing SNAFU and, as an act of goodwill, they paid off the O2 GPRS charges, paid off the remaining 9 months of my contract and ported my existing number to another network.
So if you become a victim of the O2 GPRS billing scandal my advice is this: COMPLAIN BITTERLY and MAKE A BIG FUSS! Suggest that the billing has been misapplied and imply that you believe that a fraud may be being perpetrated. Don't think that your case is an atypical anomaly and that this is somehow YOUR fault. It isn't. The shambles that is O2 GPRS billing is the culprit, you are the victim!
Cheers all,
The Gog.

Still getting free GPRS on O2?

Is anyone else here still getting free GPRS on O2 in the UK? I've not been billed for GPRS in some 13 months and am now at the point where I'm considering upgrading to a XDA Exec.
Thing is, I don't really fancy losing my free GPRS - has anyone who was getting free gprs upgraded, and if so, did you start getting charged after you did so?
Cheers,
Chris.

I'm in my last month of my O2 Online contract and I haven't been charged a penny for GPRS all through the contract. I did read somewhere that they were not charging for GPRS until 31st December 05, and I read somewhere else that that was rubbish and O2 simply didn't have the facility to charge for it.
Anyway - I upgraded to a Mini S but don't like it, so I am now waiting for my MDA Compact II to be delivered from T-Mobile on Web'n'Walk....eighteen month contract, £30 per month for 100x-net minutes anytime and 40MB (yes....40MB) of data per month. First nine months and last six months are discounted to £15 and there's another £2 discount per month for doing it all online, so basically £13 per month with £28 per month for six months in the middle.
They do the MDA Vario - free on the next tarif I think - 200x-net minutes.
About month 6 for me and no charges yet. I must be using at least £20's worth a month.
I don't keep track, it could be more!
Hi
I was an O2 user for a year before I moved to Orange and I wasnt charged for 95% of my GPRS usage. Occasioanlly a tiny bit would randomly appear on the bill. I had a retail contract bought instore as opposed to online.
In addition for 6 months I wasnt charged for text messages at all, the bill simply said I hadn't used even one of my free texts. Then suddenly in October a massive bill came through with it all on with them demanding over £100!!
Was very worried that I might have got one for GPRS come through eventually, but luckily didnt.

o2 uk payg gprs help

Hi,
I'm trying to get my sp3 (typhoon) working with gprs so I can active sync with my exchange server and use the email push service.
However I am coming to think this is impossible!
the imate sp3 comes with wm2003 so I've just spent today upgrading it to wm5 which is compatiable with the exchange push email feature. However I can't get GPRS on it.
here are the settings I'm using
10. In the 'Access Point Name' field enter 'payandgo.o2.co.uk'
11. Tap 'Next'
12. In the 'Username' field enter 'payandgo'
13. In the 'Password' field enter 'password'
26. In the 'Server' field enter '193.113.200.195'
Can anyone elighten me to what I'm doing wrong I've got the feeling o2 payg only works with wap and not full gprs data.
No web access on o2 PAYG
I believe that this is due to the fact that o2 pay and go sims only offer WAP access, whereas you require a web connection in order to connect to your exchange server. In a nutshell it's not possible on an o2 prepay sim.
deck is correct!
I had the same problem, and went for an Orange PAYG SIM in the end.
£4 for 4mb will give you over a week of push email and messenger use with 10 to 15 emails a day provided you're not dealing with attachments.
Possibly upto 2 weeks.
If you are having a particularly data intensive day, you can add on a £1 for unlimited (they say unlimited, but I think it's only 25mb) access that will expire at midnight that day, and then your regular £4 for 4mb bundle will kick in when that has expired.
Orange had the best PAYG data bundles I found a few weeks ago.
If you are a very heavy user, I have heard T-Mobile are introducing web & walk to PAYG from the 1st of August, but it sounds expensive to me, they will only charge you for the first £0.75 of day in any day, then the rest of the day it's free, so you're looking at 75 pence per day, that means between £15 to £23 a month depending if you use it just week days, or every day.
OK I found out a little more, it will cost you £1 a day.
"The web’n’walk™ £1 daily rate service combines economy with absolute cost control. Customers can surf, email and check information all for £1 a day. Each kilobyte of data is charged at 0.73 pence, until the customer has spent £1 – after which, customers will pay nothing more for the rest of the day."

So basically, as soon as you have used 137kb, you are charged £1.
That might be acceptable for an occasional user, but when you are using only 1 or 2mb a day, those costs soon rack up, and that's pretty unacceptable.
I think Orange's choice of £1 a day OR £4 for 4mb to use over a month or until you add another bundle is way better, and more flexible.
thanks for the info guys.
I've got an orange sim on contract that I don't use as it came with a free phone and cash back offer will plug this in and see how much I'm charged. The really anoyying thing is I don't get orange coverage where I live! Only o2 and vodaphone
You're still better off putting a data bundle on, or else it gets expensive.
They have the details on the website, but I think it's still £4 for 4mb, with each additional mb costing £1 on the lowest bundle.
Out of bundle costs are about £3 or £4 per mb I think.

O2 asking for second copilot package back!

Anyone else had a request from o2 to send the duplicate copilot package back? Just had mine !
Already used the second one!!
Do they have a recourse to charge me for it? They sent in error.

Some O2 sales ppl didn't realise that it comes preinstalled with CoPilot, so they where sending out extra packs with CoPilot.
Hi,
anybody there who want to sell, the second one? (duplicate copilot package)
(send to germany)
greetings
Harry
I've still got my second (unused) CoPiolot software they sent, also got a letter yesterday headed Opppss asking for it back , as far as Im aware I've paid for it because I was charged extra contract wise when upgrading to an Orbit 2 otherwise I would have had a higher discount on my tariff.
So if I send it back Im due a refund right?
Im thinking about holding it hostage until they force HTC to make proper video driver's, I cant believe the scrolling on the Orbit2 is worse than the original Orbit
Hi all,
I also got the Oops!!!! letter from O2 wanting the boxed version of Copilot back.
I have used the memory card from this box to get the copilot working as the one with the phone didn't work.
I am thinking of ringing them to ask for a reduced tariff as I think this was mis-sold. I was quoted £50 more for each of the packages because I wanted copilot, when it was included free.
Got to be worth a go.
Andrew.
I had to create a new card installation from the supplied disk as the original one was corrupt - not a very good start.
Yesterday I got a letter asking for the second CP7 software back, this went in the bin as I only ever received a single copy of the software with the device, and they never sent out a second copy to me - Mike

Good choice!!! You can also sell it to XDA Dev members. Me? I choose the package without the co-Pilot only to find one inside. They could'nt claim it back coz I paid for the whole year upfront. I did'nt received any claim notice though.
Hi All,
Just got of the phone to O2 (customer retentions) and got a new deal off them.
Original deal taken out 05/02/08.
24 month @ £40 with a £5 customer loyalty discount, phone free.
New package.
18 month @ £35 with a £5 customer loyalty discount, phone £49.99. Also one free month rental for all the hassle.
I used the argument (which is true) that when I ordered on 05/02/08 I was quoted 2 prices. I was specifically asked if I wanted the Orbit 2 with or without CoPilot s/w. All the prices with CoPilot were £50 more than without.
The O2 rep (Adrian) agreed with me that this was wrong, a throwback to the original Orbit which was available with CoPilot at £50 extra. He agreed to move me to the 18 month tariff with me paying £49.99 for the phone. I then asked if we could do anything about the phone charge and he agreed to a free month’s rental. So the phone has cost me £15.
I am sorry if this comes across as sexist but I was getting nowhere with this speaking to women, they didn’t understand my position. Eventually I got put through to retentions and got a man. Sorted.

I suspect the retentions team is a bit more clued up anyway. They have the power to fine tune packages rather than select from a bunch of options. They have to be on the ball a bit more for that to make sure they don't undersell. I've just ordered my O2O2 after having to wait until March 1st because of an 18 month upgrade cycle. I didn't want to wait 18 months again for an upgrade but then I didn't want the crappy packages they give you on a 12 contract. It told them that I was happy to have a 18 month contract, but I didn't want that to mean an 18 month handset upgrade cycle too (although being a "select" customer means I get to upgrade 3 months before end of contract)
The woman in sales just couldn't do anything but when they put me through to another woman in retention, she was great and sorted it all out. FWIW I got a 12 months contract, 1000texts, 600mins, web bolt-on, £40pm, handset free. Not amazing but online the same contract would be £40+£7.50 a month (for webbolt-on) and £50 for the handset - an extra £140 over the year.
Argue your tits off with o2,
theyre not perfect by an means... and trust me i should know,
owning an orbit i contacted o2 shop in town to have confirmed whether 4gb card will work ok,
(SDHC) told yes, so brought online from non o2 supplier,
card didnt fit etc, but o2 liable as advised it would,
o2 promised to send 'free' 2gb card,
this arrived damaged,
rang complaints - card sent out, card didnt arrive
rang complaints again - card sent out - card didnt arrive
(turned out both cards were not actually posted at all) - blatently lied to !!!
rang again threatening legal action,
i was 12mths into an 18mth contract = by way of apologising
i now have Free upgrade to orbit 2
free spare battery
4gb sdhc card
and my package has been updated to include bolt-on 'free' for internet useage
theyre a bunch of half witted brain dead's
who dont know their backsides from their elbows
contract still remains 6mths to end,

Purchased Through Expansys

Hi all,
Couldn't wait any longer for touch pro to be available through the neworks. Took the plung and ordered today through Expansys with T-Mobile Flext 35 with W n W. My only concern it the reports of bad recieption on t-mobile. What are my rights of return with on-line sellers if my signal is bad. In my home there is no 3g and my GSM signal is between 1 and 2 bars. Always when out and about will I get the H or just 3G I seem to remember some comments on Expansys not including H with their sim cards.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to read and responding.
College.
I bought exactally the same deal and I have no worries with the signal, I get HSPDA at work, home and my GF's (3 quite spaced out locations, and I also live in the bottom of a valley).
As for returning, your problems lie with T-Mobile as you have entered an 18 month contract with them. I don't think you have many rights with regards to canceling that contract, certainly no more than about 10 days I think. But if you are having problems with reception, I'd say it was down to your area rather than the network or the phone.

You should have a cooling off period - usually 14 days to return the product contract or not. Vodafone offer this, so i dont see why tmobile wont. You will have to pay for calls made etc.

Sounds reasonable, I'm sure if you were to phone them up they would tell you where you stand.
I believe that the law in the UK states that on any mobile contract, you must have a 14 day period within which you can return it for ANY reason.
if expansys refuse to allow you to do this, they are breaking the law!
Hows your phone and T-Mobile ???
I'm toying with the idea of getting the same deal you went for , but i'm just unsure about t-mobile , so hows it all going ????
I went through expansys but with the t-mobile combi 30, no problems as of yet
Actually there is no law that states there is a 14 day cooling off period, this somewhat changed when the major networks got a significantly high percentage of coverage, if you purchase a phone from a shop you do not have a right to return it unless it is faulty, ie orange will not allow a return when a phone has been purchased from a shop and advise you or should advise you of this at the time, as it was costing them so much money to deal with the returned phones.
however, seen as all purchases from the internet are govered under distance selling rules, you will always have 7 days in which to return the phone to the dealer if you do not want to keep it.
And of course you still have statute law which coveres faulty goods ect.

The Distance selling regulations are actually 7 working days btw....
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, although I've been lurking a few weeks.
Anyway, I too got a Touch Pro through Expansys with the T-Mobile Combi 30+WnW contract.
I noticed a problem with it (the contract) yesterday, which was the billing date, which was set to the 20th (had to sign up to the T-Mobile website to find this info out), and I had only got the contract on the 1st! I thought it was a little unreasonable to want me to pay over a week before the end of the month and it was also a couple of days before I get reimbursed for my time at work (and I don't want to eat cereal for a week ). I read the FAQ and billing info which said I could change it if it was in 14 days of the billing date, which it was just! So I battled with 150, robot voice of annoyance, and after managing to confuse it twice, it dropping my call twice while waiting for a reply from tech support, and giving up waiting after 10 minutes, I used their contact form to email them. A guy called me back 5 minutes later, brilliant! He moved the billing date to the 26th, for some reason the 25th which I would have preferred was a problem, but never mind.
So far though I really like the phone, which is my first windows mobile and at least the buttons work, unlike those on my hate inducing K800i.
BTW I'm pretty sure Expansys website says you have 10 days to notify them that you are going to return the phone.

Do you speak English?
As for T-Mobile, I have had my phone for a few week now and no problems at all. I get great HSPDA signal for web browsing, after some faffing about I get YouTube streaming, calls are clear (1 dropped call in 2 1/2 weeks)and no problems with messaging either. T-mobile has by far one of the best Mobile Werb plans in the UK (Orange has 250mb limit and vodafone has 500MB fair useage, T-Mobile has 1GB Fair useage).
All in all I am very glad took the plunge!
I certainly think t-mobile offer a good service (unless abroad! - made my wallet somewhat lighter) but they have no business sense at all, as an existing customer with a month and a half left on my contract I can't use the same method to upgrade to the Touch Pro. I have a feeling it's going to be cheaper with vodafone etc when it launches though I dunno but I think I may hold out (Also for their faster HSPDA).
I wouldn't worry about fair usage policies, when I moved house with my t-mobile 1gb fair usage I didn't have the internet for a month so I plugged my n95 in and was able to get 1.5mbps to my pc. I think I must have used at least 10gb that month using it as my usenet client etc. All that happened was they sent me a letter two months down the line. I think unless you always use lots of BW, you really can see it as unlimited on any fair usage policy.

Are vodafone doing any special offers on Touch Pro?

Looks like I'm going to have to pay myself out of my T-mobile contract and go vodafone.
I see on their website that they are throwing in a bluetooth headset + in car holder. Am I likely to be able to get anything else if I phone up or go to Vodafone shop such as in car charger etc ?
Only paying £30 for the Flext35 with web and walk and looks like it'll be around £38 for the Vodafone deal with free phone.
Cheers,
Andy
Hi Andy, Make sure you sign up with quidco.com first. Clear all your cookies from your browser and them go through them. Should be able to make 90 or 100 quid from signing up.
Any reasons to not go Vodafone?
I've been waiting for T-Mobile to bring out the Touch Pro for what seems like so long I've nearly had enough!
Even though I'm on a good deal with T-Mobile, might go Vodafone with this.....................
Anyone got any ideas why I shouldn't??
Charging over 500mb data a month??
Any other downsides??
I think coverage is better than T-Mobile in Scotland?
JamieMag: Legend, hadn't even thought of that. £90 quid pays for almost half of buying out my T-Mobile Contract, top work fella!
/Edit: Just had a look at the T+C's and they don't cover business purchases of which the Touch Pro is one. Any ideas on how to get round this issue?
/Edit2: Should really read more closely, according to Quidco, a business purchase is worth £100!!! http://www.quidco.com/vodafone-business/ Awesome.
Roblpm: I've not found any downsides with vodafone. Of every network I've come across they have the best coverage down south / in London. Perhaps this will encourage T-mobile to get their testing expedited or treat customers better.
One further thing, if I want to sign up online for this phone online with Quidco cashback you have to go to via the business site. Is this ok?
Voda is terrible. Coverage around here (Nr Manchester) is awful. Flat out doesn't work around Manchester Oxford Road, didn't work for me when I worked in East-Central London and signal varies a lot in Lytham - even in areas where the website says I should get full 3G.
I only have one other friend stupid enough to be on voda and we joke that we can never get hold of each other because one of us is bound to have either no signal or 'network busy'.
I get 'network busy, try again?' about 1 in 5 calls I make. We joke that 'the other person on voda in Lytham must be trying to make a call'
Can anyone comment on coverage in south east? Everyone at work seems happy with them. Cheers

From London, Maidstone and Ramsgate/Margate I've always had good signal and usually HSDPA. I'm going to upgrade to the Touch Pro tomorrow
Hopefully £35 for 600 minutes, Unlimites Texts and Unlimited Data. The phone better be free too! (I believe it will be!)
I live in the South East and work in London and the reception is brilliant. There are black spots for every network and this seems to get greater the further out into Kent you go, but this is probably level in comparison with other operators.
Never had an issue with Vodafone myself and have had service where others haven't (of course this works in vice versa).
At the end of the day I feel it is just personal preference and I am happy to have been with Vodafone for 10-12 years or so.
Great stuff, thanks for the feedback. As you say all networks will have their strong and weaker areas.
Just wanted to double check that this quidco thing worked for you guys ? and also what deals did you get with voda there are 2 almost identical deals which appeal to me
1= £40 per month for 750 mins 250 texts and unlimited data (phone = £150)
2= £45 per month for 750 mins 250 texts and unlimited data (phone = £ free)
deal 2 is cheaper over the 18 month period
PS all prices are after VAT
To those that have a voda TP, does the phones shell have Vodafone branding on it, or is it a standard HTC phone case (no voda logo)?
I got a vodafone touch pro a week ago.
Has discreet branding at bottom of screen in white font and on back case.
Phone comes with vodafone rom with red/white touchflo interface and only omission from HTC advertised spec is youtube prog is missing! However using coreplayer instead.
I got a better deal by going direct to vodafone than by using Quidco and the standard internet offer. On £35 for 500 mins / 100 texts and unlimited internet. Phone was free. Got 2 months line rental free and a bluetooth headset thrown in. Got this deal by going into vodafone store and then chipping away, threatening to go to O2 etc. They tried to get me on the higher price plan but this is perfectly adequate for me. You can also downgrade/upgrade after 9 months.
My first HTC handset so have only been brave enough to change the icons to the HTC 3d so far. Actually quite like the bright vodafone touchflo so will keep it for now.

I just got a cracking deal from Voda in store, BIG THANKS to thebearhack for the suggestion
***£30*** per month for 750 mins 250 texts and unlimited data (phone = £ free)
+ I got a free nokia headset worth £30 + a free pay as you go sim
The only downside is that it is a 2 year deal, but TBH although my last three contracts have been 18 month I have ended up staying for 2 years as I waited for a new phone to be released so I dont mind.
My deal was 18 month 'business' plan. The fact that I don't have my own business was ignored! I am new to vodafone as far as they are concerned last phones were in my wife's name.
