CRADLE - General Topics

I have an XDA and an XDA II.
Is it possible to use the XDA in the XDA II cradle?

Hi guys. same question but the other way around....
I have a XDA2 and i am using the cradle from my old XDA. It sync's and seems to charge my XDA2 via the USB even though i dont have any power pluged into the cradle itself. I'm wandering if this will cause any issues with the battery over a period of time or is this ok?
Thanks for your feed back guys 8)

why?
you mean a slower charging may damage the batt ?

Yeah i'm wandering if it is ok with the volt or ohms.... going into the battery will cause and long term issues (damage)..... as i have no idea about electronics. But so far it seems fine apart from the slow charge. Also noticed that when fully charged with the XDA cradle it show 3 1/2 hours remaining were as when fully charged from the XDA2 cradle it shows 5hours.

it's ok you can also connect a xda2 cradle and now give it power so it gets the power from usb

XDA2 car lead same as XDA?

Can anyone confirm whether the XDA2 has the same connector and pinout as the XDA?
Some accessories seem to say they're compatible with both models and some say they're only for one model or the other.
I want a power lead "Y" lead to connect to my GPS receiver and to send the power and serial signal to my XDA2. Will such leads sold by TomTom and others for the XDA do for the XDA 2 as well?
Thanks.
The XDA and XDA2 (XDAII) share the same connector and pin assignments. See http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/Connectors .
Thanks Darren. I'll go and order a couple from TDC......
They are NOT exactly the same. Charging pins have changed. My XDA I sync/charge cable, for example, will sync but not charge.
The car charge lead that came with my GPS unit says it works with both XDA and XDA II. I have not used it as I'm using a car kit with GPS port. Just keeping as a spare in case I want to use the GPS in another car.

Guess you broke the cable. Every XDA cable i saw worked on my MDA and viceversa....
The layout is the same, or it isn't.
It always works, or it never works, no inbetweens...
This is well documented, so go do a search. The symptom is that the XDA II will show a charge light, but will not actually charge. Well known. Someone recently posted pics of the slight mods needed to make an XDA I cable work properly on the XDA II.
There is no issue with using an XDA II-compatible cable on an XDA I.

Right, only the applied power seems to be a problem with some cables.
Like USB-charger cables...
I am using an xda1 cable on my xda2 in the car using a usb cigarette lighter adaptor and it will charge it ok unless my battery power is below 10%, then it quickly sucks the remaining charge out whilst showing that it is charging it
If i plug the lead into a computers usb port and try to charge the xda2, it just discharges it fast no matter how much charge its got in it
Well I've taken the gamble and ordered the XDA power & GPS lead from TDC for my XDA2.
They've sold one before for an XDA2 and it hasn't been returned, so they assume its OK, but can't guarantee for sure.
I'll keep you posted.....

XDA2 Replacement/Spare Batteries

I'm researching batteries with a view to getting the best life possible out of an XDA2 between recharges.
What replacement/spare batteries do people use and what is their power (mAh) rating?
What other things can people tell me on this?
I'm not averse to back-packs etc.
TIA
I have one of the batteries available on eBay. Seems the same as the original battery. I carry the spare in my belt case.
I got mine from www.pdamods.com and have been using it for three months now, must say better than the original and in fact looks like an original !!!
I have three batteries. One came with the unit, I bought another from the same shop, the third I bought 2nd hand. All appear identical and all 1200mah. I swap them through my XDA II every week or so so that they each get drained and recharged regularly. When not in use one is on charge in my desktop cradle in the office, other in my briefcase.
All seem to last about the same amount of time.
Must admit though since buying an integrated car kit for my XDA II (plus GPS) I do not have to swap batteries as often.

You can find batteries at 1400mAh, same size as the original and officially 20-30% increased autonomy.
Battery question
Thanks everyone for all the help you've given to me in the past. I have a couple battery related questions:
1. I just got a new battery from PCPockettechs. It is rated 3.8VDC 1200 mAh. The current battery in my XDA II is rated 3.7VDC 1200mAh. I have not tried the new battery yet and am worried that the extra 0.1VDC might cause it some harm. Does anyone know or have experience with this difference? Am i worrying for nothing?
2. The extra battery charger that is in the cradle - it does not appear to be working (the light does not come on). Does the XDA II battery have to be fully charged before it starts charging the extra battery? Does the cradle need to be plugged in to the AC (I have the EU cable which I cannot use) before it will charge or can it just be connected via USB as I do now?
Thanks again,
Sean
Hi,
When I purchased mine from www.pdamods.com it worked straight out of the box. Unless it is completely flat it should work even if charged for a short while, however you should charge it for 18 hours on the first charge.

As far a I know you have to use the AC adapter. USB won't work.
Not true, I charge it with the USB, however NOTE it does take longer
The MDAII charges on USB only too.
Not sure about charging an extra battery (that is what the question is about I think)
thanks guys. Yes, the MDA II or XDA II both charge in the cradle just on USB... however, will it also charge the extra battery just on USB? I don't think it will unfortunately.
On my other question: does anyone know if the 0.1VDC difference will make a difference? The battery appears to be the right size, shape, same connectors, etc. as the original battery - the only difference being this 0.1VDC.
Anyone with some good electrical/technical info that they could share would be great. It would put my mind at ease - or stop me from making a big mistake!
The MDA II charges on USB (in the cradle).
But for the extra battery to charge in the cradle you need to plug in the power (and then the light will turn on!).

new battery only works when charging... :(

I buy a new battery for my Qtek 2020 from http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8464
I receive the battery today and I put on the PDA and then connect to AC adapter...
the battery stops charging in 96% and I disconnect AC adapter, but the phone turns off and only works connected to the AC adapter.
If I use the old battery it works well, but with the new one, only work connected to the AC adapter.
now I have it connected to the cradle, and seems to be charging and says that it is 100%, but after a while it restarts and I don't know why
It's possible that the battery is not charged and windows mobile shows 100%?
my old battery is same model but as only 1200mAh, the new as 1600mAh.
sorry for my english, any help will be appreciated.
thanks.
Sounds as though the new batery is either not connecting correctly in the XDA or is a fauty unit that wont hold a charge. Given thatthe phone turns off immediately you disconnect the AC i would suspect the former.
Check there isn't stick stuff / tarnish over the battery connecters on the new battery - and that the pins are making contact.
Is it a genuine-looking battery?

it's the battery from the link, it's not genuine, but seems equal to my other battery.
the new battery says Made in Taiwan and the old says Made in Japan.
apparently the new battery is full charged, but PDA don't use the charge...
thanks for the advice, the connetors and the pins are clean.
are there double power battery for the o2 xda II?

I don't think so, I got a 1300mAh (which is a genuine 02 product) for my xda2 and use the original as a back up battery.

Hi, I'm looking for a small keyring charger and found this for £8, anyone got one or found anything similar?
Need it small enough to carry on keys as an emergency charger.

That one should work, as it's MicroUSB as the Desire...

Take it ur from uk. Got one in poundland, you put 2 aa batteries in n it charges for about 3 hours, you just plug ur usb cable in then connect ur phone. Guessing you can work out the price. Works well with duracell batteries, not with cheapos

Ah cool, how much was that one?
I'd heard horror stories about the ones which take two AAs draining more power than they put in, but I'll give it a try for a quid! Be too big to have on my keys so prob go for one of the other ones as well, but I guess you cant have enough chargers for the power-hungry Desire!
Yeh a bit big for keys but works well, and doesnt drain nor charge whilst gps is on and charges whilst idle

Phone discharging in car while using navigation although connected to power

Hi,
I recently had to drive ~200km and I was listening to music via Spotify and using Google Navigation. I had the phone plugged in the entire time via this charger (sorry, only found it on the german amazon page) and the charge on my phone constantly decreased so after about 150km (~1,5h) my phone charge dropped from about 70 to 15 percent and I had to stop listening to music and start praying that my phone would last.
I know, that there are some chargers who don't deliver that much of power, but since I bought a pretty expensive charger, I thought that should not be a problem.
Any suggestions what I could do to track the amount of power that my phone got? (500mA / 1A) or similar?
Thanks
In siyah kernel you can increase the charge juice amount with extweak from googleplay. Its simple math, charger cant charge as fast much as phone can spend the battery juice.
You can do this: If your navigation app says to turn in abou 100km, you can turn off screen for 95kilometres and save battery juice.

HTC phones will only request 1A from the charger if the two middle pins are shorted, this at least works on every non HTC car charger I've used.

I found that USB chargers don't work as well as an AC adapter. I got the Enercell™ 150W Power Inverter and it worked perfect with GPS and music.

Same for me I'm using the same car charger that I've used to use with my desire S. If you want to use the gps you better charge your phone at home before leaving !!!

Charger problem
I had the same problem with cheap ebay universal chargers. When I am on trip I use GPS, streaming pandora, Sync is on and some chargers can't keep up with this drain.
So I bought this Motorola charger that has 1300+ reviews on amazon and works very well. http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehicle-Adapter-micro-USB-Charger/dp/B000S5Q9CA
I suggest you buy this one and try it. If this charger does not work I doubt it any other will do. The inverter above is a good alternative, but I think you will be fine with the moto charger.
ps. also if you are in some country side area where the coverage is weak the phone uses more power to find cell towers. My experience above is mixed city-urban area/non urban
I also had the same issues with two different 12V to USB chargers.
I'm now enjoying this charger I got from my old Nokia N97 and it works great.
Sometimes, the USB cable is the issue and not the Charger!
Seriously, just get the HTC CC C200, its not even expensive....
