IM logging? - General Topics

Was just wondering what are the various IM clients out there? Currently I'm using MSN messenger, and tried cooking imov into the rom (but it didn't work...).
I currently leave my MSN messenger logged in, occassionally, messages would come in but I might have missed them. Answering an incoming call cuts off the GPRS connection, and all the open MSN chats close too - as a result, those messages are gone. =(
I'm actually looking for an instant messenger client (MSN and/or ICQ) that would allow me to log chats automatically. Recommendations anyone?

Imov is good but it doesn't work if it is part of a cooked ROM ... another better client is AgileMessenger [freeware] which has direct connection to the 4 IMs without the need for a Jabber server

I use agile, and it seems to be good. The only problem is as mentioned above is if you get a call you loose your gprs connection. Otherwise it seems to work good.

I believe this is a limitation of GPRS rather than Agile. Been looking at it and it does look good - at least, unlike MSN messenger, unread messages don't get lost when the GRPS disconnects. I guess thats nice, but I'd really like something that would keep logs as well... hmm. The 'autostart' that MSN messenger has when an internet connection is detected is interesting too.
Any other popular IM clients out there?

MSN Messenger for WM6

does anyone have a msn messenger for wm6 that works with GPRS, because live messenger always syncs contacts with contact list and if my friends want to sign on their contacts will get joined with mine, which i dont want. Also if it would be able to work with T-mobile US GPRS without having to pay for a plan like Pocket MSN did with WM6 that would be great.
Have you tried Windows Live Messenger ? It works with all your MSN contacts in WM6. It is available in Faria's real thing WM6 ROM, amongst others.
I'm not sure what you mean about the contacts, but the newer version of windows live messenger gives you the option to merge contacts with outlook or not to if you don't want it to do that. I use it just fine on the $5.99 t-zones plan, weather or not you can still get free internet without any data plan I am not sure of but that's something that had the same limitations as t-zones and it's not something to rely on always being there
use im+. Hope this helps

Dude this is not a warez site....IM+ is an commercially available messenger program....you cant post that here unless its an trial version without pre-patched\cracked.

where can i set it?
thx. just didnĀ“t use it much.
No i mean, when i sign into windows live messenger it says i ave to sync my countacts with my messenger contacts. Thats why i want one without that. Pocket MSN on WM5 did not force you to sync contacts, and worked without a T-mobile data plan, as does OZ IM. is there something like that for WM6, or maybe even just the whole pocket MSN for wm6.

Messenger with support for multiple logins

What I really like about the new Live Messenger is that it supports multiple logins. I can stay connected at home and at work at the same time, and the conversations are syncronized bethween all my computers.
However, the Messenger client on my Touch Pro does not support this. When I connect using Touch Pro, all my other clients are disconnected.
Is there Messenger client out there that supports multiple logins?

There are quite a few of them. Read my Messaging bible in the Wiki.
When I say "multiple logins" I don't mean "logins to different networks". In short I want to avoid this message when I sign in to my MSN-account on the Pocket PC:
"You were signed out from here because you signed in to a version of Messenger that doesn't let you sign in to more than one place".
Thanks!

OIC. I don't know of any of them. I'll check the latest version of Agile, IM+, Fring etc. to see whether some of them already supports this (long-needed) functionality. I'll keep you posted.
(Sorry for the delay!)
Great! Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to implement.
*bump*

Link?
How about a good multi-login (different protocols) client?
not possible with MSN as far as i know. the service does not allow it.
Aim allows you to be logged in at multiple locations however.

With the old MSN Messenger it was not possible.
But it is possible using Microsoft Live Messenger.
However; is it possible on Windows Mobile?

Yahoo & Wifi - Anyone else having problems?

My Mail client won't connect to Yahoo over the wifi setting. Is anyone else having this problem? I searched the Captivate forum but found no posts. I did find some info at Android Forums in the HTC Hero forum.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Yahoo blocks access to mail over WiFi unless you pay for Yahoo! Plus. It can be worked around, but really all their doing is encouraging people to switch to Gmail.

I'm not clear on this - how does Yahoo know if you're attempting to connect via WiFi? If you're on WiFi, you're on your own network, bypassing the cellular network, so how would a request over WiFi from the Captivate to Yahoo's mail servers look any different than a request over WiFi from, say, my laptop or another device? I have no problems with Yahoo mail over WiFi from my laptop or from my old smartphone.
If there's verified info about this somewhere, could you post a link? This is one of the issues that's keeping me from picking up a Captivate.
Thanks!

Are you using webmail on your desktop? Or are you using Outlook or some other POP3 client?
Somewhere in Yahoo's FAQs is a note about accessing yahoo's email using POP3. As mentioned above, to do POP3 you need a Yahoo Plus account (paid). Because AT&T has a deal with Yahoo, you get free POP3 access, but only when coming from AT&T network. Yahoo can tell this by looking at the IP address of the client. It is not really the idea of WiFi or not, but ATT network versus another - and it only applies to POP3 configurations - not webmail.
I don't have time to find the link now, but if you search Yahoo for terms like "POP3 email" you will find mention of this.
Interesting thread.
I have a plus account and over Wifi the wife's phone is having issues getting her Yahoo mail reliably.
I have set up the pop3 w/ssl as Yahoo has outlined so I am not sure its really a problem with paid vs free as its a issue with the client and connecting to Yahoo pop serves.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it stops but several hrs later it starts back up. This is over Wifi. Now I need to just turn off Wifi and let the 3g run for a few days and see if its a issue that way.
Now my hotmail and gmail do not have these issues no matter what I am on. Go figure.

Found the info, wow that's horrible. Apple must have some kind of deal with Yahoo then, Yahoo mail & calendar integrate seamlessly on the iPhone regardless if you're on 3G or WiFi. Guess I'll be switching to Google's services if I pick this phone up...

[Q] Email App - Leave Messages On Server

i'm pretty happy with the default mail client but i can't seem to find a way to leave messages on the server - is there an option for that ?
if not, can someone suggest a decent honeycomb mail client ? i've looked at k9 but whilst it seems to have plenty of features, it is definitely designed for a phone screen ...
thanks in advance ...

The messages should stay on the server if you're using the stock mail client, I tried this out myself briefly and I still had my messages online. Also there is an option you can change to decide whether you want the client to delete messages from the server if you delete them from the 'local' copy of the Inbox, or whether you want them left on the server at all times. Or maybe your e-mail provider works a bit differently from mine...
Hope this helps.
do you have your mail setup as pop3 or imap ?
I had it setup at the time as POP3, but I then changed my mind about getting my e-mails through my TF so I removed the account without losing any e-mails.

3rd party email apps and car Bluetooth

Ok so this question is a bit odd so I really didn't know where to put it. I barely know how to phrase it...
I have a BMW and it has the ability to read and send emails through BT. However I've noticed that this only works with the stock Samsung email app, and not with any other third party apps like Outlook or Bluemail.
I can't say I'm surprised, but I don't know why or how this is, so I don't know if there are a) any other apps that would work or b) a way to bypass/hack this apparent restriction.
I'm sure this comes from the phone but I have no clue if other manufacturers have the same kind of quirk. The Samsung email app isn't horrible, but it's not the best either...
Thanks!
Maybe your car has a whitelist of email clients from which accepts connections.
Or your phone can send BT emails from other apps.
Try using another email client (non-server one) such as Thunderbird Mail and see if that works.

Thanks for the reply. I doubt BMW went through the trouble of whitelisting clients, especially considering the number of manufacturers who have their own apps pre-installed.
I'm a little puzzled at what you're referring to however when you say "non-server" clients? Do you mean POP3 settings instead? Because I've tried a variety of clients and all fail except the Samsung app, which led me to my conclusion it has access to a priority API or protocol...
