Hm, cannot find a way to completely turn off wireles charging, but at least you can turn off the "Fast wireless charging" which at least for me was overheating the phone.
For that, go to : Settings->Battery & Device->Battery->More Battery Settings->Fast wireless charging
(or simply search for "charging" in settings and you'll get faster to "Fast wireless charging")

I have a new car that came with a wireless charger, and I've noticed that my phone gets hot after a while charging there. Will try disabling the fast wireless charging as suggested. I imagine that this could damage the phone in the living term right? Any possible explanation on why this happens?

Power source detection

I'm not sure, but would it be possible for the G1/Android to detect what power source it's plugged into? From what I understand, a lot of wall-warts speak somewhat to the device. If minute differences could be found, they could be "labeled". Applications for this would be power based setting changes. For example, plugged into my computer-> screen on, bedside charger-> backlight off/ringer silent, Car charger-> GPS, bluetooth on, blah blah, etc. Anyone have any thoughts about this?
Sounds like a neat locale plug in if this is possible.
I know devices can tell the difference between a USB plug and an electrical outlet
Not sure about the car charger though.
doesnt the app power manager do the job?? idk about the car charger one tho
Z
The reason I think this may be possible is that I had a RAZR a few phones ago, and it would only work with Motorola power supplies, but my BB pearl I got after it would work with it as well. And if I recall, iPhones require some kind of handshake to work with a usb plug. Just an idea and was wondering about it's plausibility.

I looked at power manager, and it does change settings depending on whether it is plugged in or not. The real point of my inquiry is not whether setting can be changed, but can power sources be ID'd. Setting change is just an application of the information. You could also have it launch an app too if plugged in, IE a navigation or music app starts when plugged into car charger.
Detecting the difference between the USB cable and wall/car charger should be simple enough - only one of those has a computer on the other end, and the phone already detects that. It even shows up in the spare parts app on CyanogenMod as "charging (AC)" and "charging (USB)".
Not sure if there is a way to differentiate between car and wall charger. (Though you could always hack something together using the GPS and define the car charger as "any non-USB charger outside a set location". If you're not travelling much, that is.)
If you use "Spare Parts" and bring up the battery info screen, it will indicate (AC) or (USB) when the phone is charging...
Using the AC charger makes a big difference on these phones. I run Wifi Tether on 3G all day long at work. Using the USB charger, the phone will die. Using AC, it will stay on 100 charge even if I'm streaming music all day...
I think the max output on a USB cable is 0.5 amps. The HTC charger is labeled as max output 1 amp. I'm no electrician, but the AC cable could in fact be twice as good as USB charging.

Fast Charging?

I'm not sure if I'm being stupid or not, but when I charge my S6 (using the cable that came with it) and the phone is off, I do not get the fast charging symbol/text. However, as soon as my wife plugged hers in to charge it for the 1st time and it was off, it had the fast charging text. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.
I get the fast charge symbol and it says "fast charging" Not sure what you are doing wrong.

Just to make sure, you said you were using the cable, are you also using the white 110 adapter that you plug the cable into on the wall side? I always get the fast charging message, both using the equipment supplied with the phone, as well as using a "Qualcomm 2.0" fast charge car cigarette lighter style adapter I bought from Amazon.
Good luck
Can we control when it fast charges vs slow charges? What's the difference (besides the obvious)?

Assuming you use the included charger, or another charger with Qualcomm 2.0 Quick Charge capability, it will always take advantage of the technology. None of the wireless charging, as far as I know, is equipped with the fast charge technology, so that will always be at conventional speed.
As an aside, I have plugged my phone into the "quick charger" and then set it on the wireless charging pad, and the pad shows it "charging". I haven't really checked to see if that adds anything to the speed of the charge.

I believe there is a setting in the battery stats menu where you can turn off fast charging well it was on my note 4 anyway.

[Q] Wireless Charging - Daydream

I have a Qi charging stand, and I set up the S6 daydream (screen saver) with news/weather. This is perfect for work to keep it charged wirelessly and keep up with news.
However with wireless charging, it doesn't seem to trickle charge correctly, so the phone keeps oscillating between 99% and 100% every few minutes. More importantly whenever it starts or stops charging, the phone wakes up to tell me so. Sadly we can't install the Xposed app to disable the wake.
When I use a wired charger though, it doesn't seem to have this cycle. Presumably it gets to 100% and trickle charges, and thus the screen does seem to stay off.
Does anyone have this effect, or know of a workaround? Do others use other wireless chargers that are able to trickle charge?

This is an intentional design decision by Samsung, they did it on the S4 as well.
I agree that it is super annoying, and it means that I can't just charge the phone overnight unless I go wired.

[Q] Quick Car Charger that will charge the phone while GPS is on?

Trying to find a car charger and cable that will charge the phone while GPS is on.
Currently using: Incipio Auto Charger 2.0 Quick Charge
...and an HTC branded coiled charging cable that came with my One M8's HTC branded car charging adapter. (My M8 had no problem charging while the GPS was in use. Bluetooth too.)
It DOES say "charging by AC" when connected but still drops as I drive. No other apps running, not even bluetooth.
Not interested in having the screen dim between directions because I like to see what's coming before the GPS announces it (and I typically run the GPS muted anyway.)
I am also confused by the charging cable comments. I've read the cable has to be "charge only, no data" and also that it DOES need to be a data cable so the phone can identify the "quick" charger. Which is correct?
Help?
TIA!

Hi I had the same problem. In the end, I made my own being an electrical engineer, I was tired of having charging problems. You need a regulated 12V to 5V DC power supply capable of at least 1A continous charging. What i find helps too is put the phone in battery saving mode when charging continuously . This is the sort of thing I made:

Thank you so much for your reply.
I might even be able to build something like you describe, I have friends with the requisite skills.
Question is, will that hack allow me to charge the phone while the GPS is on? Charging while the phone is off or not in use is just fine.
I have my M8 here, dusting it off, in case I need to return the M9...
Mine charges ok with the screen and GPS running whist I have igo primo running

Fast Charging Not Always Fast

I just picked up a wireless fast charger for use in my car, and found out (via one of those USB power meters) that the S7 isn't actually fast charging even though it says it is. When the screen is off and the device is fully idle, it will charge at 7-12W (power input to the wireless fast charger) but when the screen is on, it drops down to 3-5W which is not even enough to maintain state of charge if I'm doing something like a phone call or GPS navigation. Any ideas why this is? Seems like it might be thermal related. I've got root and various tweaking apps, is there a way to force it to do full 10W charging whenever possible and throttle CPU instead if needed for thermals?
Found the answer to part of my question here: http://androidforums.com/threads/galaxy-s7-wont-fast-charge-if-the-screen-is-on.1002329/
It's by design that if the temperature is too high or the screen is on fast charging is disabled. Question remains if this can be bypassed by root commands/tweaks or not.

It also depends on charger
As long fast charging is switched ON on your phone and the wireless charger does support fast charging, it will say that its fast charging.
However, if your phone while charging got hot or you are charging in a hot ambient temperature, the phone will charge at normal rates even less as the temps of the phone goes up. Thus the fan in the wireless charger
Btw am referring to the official samsung fast charger stand with a gs7, havent tried other brands.
Hope this helps
