Do I need to update Android version before upgrading Lineage - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

I have a OnePlus 7 Pro. I've had LOS on there since version 16. That is when I flashed the manufacturers Android OS on there as well as LOS 16. I have in my personal notes from previous upgrades that I had to reflash the Android OS before upgrading LOS. However, it was in LineageOS's How To Upgrade docs to do so. Now it's not. Although their upgrade docs are not version specific. They are only from previous version to latest. And you can not see their historical revisions. That is why I maintain my own docs.
I currently have LOS version 18 running Android version 11. I have fallen behind on their updated. I wish to update eventually to latest. But I understand it's not advisable to skip versions. I do not plan on skipping. I will do them one at a time.
My question: If I plan on upgrading from LOS version 18 to version 19. Do I HAVE TO upgrade the Android OS FIRST? Here is their upgrade docs. Remember, it's only for latest upgrade i.e. 19 to 20. And this doc does not include upgrading Android first. But I wrote down from LOS 17 to 18 I did have to.
A few weeks ago, while trying to research this. I ran across this thread, which was old. None-the-less I still asked my question there to see if maybe someone would get notified and be able to answer this question. Though, no one has responded.

According to the current upgrade docs, which you linked to:
5. Additionally if you are on LineageOS 16.0 or below, open Settings, then “System”, then “Developer Options”, then select “Root Access Options”, and finally “ADB Only”. Now, run adb root

This basically tells us that the steps are the same for every version, and since it talks about updating from LOS 16 to 20 then skipping versions won't be an issue. Let me know if you have any questions!

Ah, so I did miss this version number you pointed out. Thank you for that. That does change things quite a bit.
I am still questioning 2 things though. Not that I don't believe you. Just questioning if there is something reassuring me.
1, are we sure that skipping version will not cause issues? I work in software and generally this is not always advisable. But not always.
2, I'm really confused how and why I wrote down in my personal notes that I had to upgrade my Android version before flashing the next LOS version. I did this and wrote this down both from 16 to 17, and then again from 17 to 18.
It could be simply that I'm an idiot? But since I did it twice this way, I guess I'd just feel a little more comfortable if I read of others doing this with no issues. Or documentation that specifically says this.

New Xperia G8142 Problems?

As we all know there is a point during setup where you put in your google account and it asks to restore from a phone or start fresh. When I got to that part, there were no backups to restore from. I confirmed that my Essential Phone and my Pixel XL backup were still present on my drive. Then after the setup was complete, I noticed that there wasn't Android 8.1 on the Premium, despite having the April security update. Being impatient, I looked it up and I saw that 8.1 was available and out for OTA. Since I don't have a carrier-locked device, theoretically I could receive all updates as they roll out from Sony. I thought since my backups were from an 8.1 device, they were incompatible to downgrade to 8.0. Still being impatient, I looked over XDA and found that Unlocking the bootloader and loading a custom ROM would be fine, but that's where I ran into issues.
Half of the threads that supported G8412 (Dual Sim) were either edited to "working" or out-of-date or closed by a moderator (I downloaded the Turbo mod before it was deleted, and I only discovered it was deleted when I logged on to thank him).
TL;DR:
-Unlocked my bootloader, which turned out to be a terrible mistake on my part
-Cant seem to find a stable ROM (the flash-and-forget kind) that supports my model
-Apparently now the camera is broken and unusable on most ROMs?
-Can't migrate any of my data due to a (theoretical) Android 8.1/8.0 clash
Anything I am missing on the forum would be appreciated. I've looked at Storm's thread (closed), Turbo's thread (closed), Snappatch (DRM Fix required). It seems like a lot of ROMs that are still active require the DRM fix by Storm except for the Carbon ROM. So, any suggestions as to what to do going forward? Is there something I am missing?
(Edit: upon reading, this looked more like a blog post so I cut it down)
I'm personally using the official CarbonROM 8.1 on my G8142. Been running it for a few weeks and it's pretty stable.

Does the CarbonROM require any upkeep? I see it says "Weeklys" in it's title, so for the uneducated, does that mean it is updated Weekly with new features/fixes?

I did get the firmware that is .145, and I do have a DRM fix currently, however I do not remember where I got it from. I wish Turbo the best of luck in bringing back his work and collab with that other guy.
Update
After a bit of research, I did find that getting the 8.1 Carbon Rom with the AOSP upgrade below would be best. As seems like the current trend where some users report successes and others report failures and there really isn't an "in-between" of a particular combination, this one seems to have the most credibility as of May 8. Carbon Rom's thread hasn't been active for about a month, however and the author behind the Snappatch upgrades seems to have left XDA..
Any other users that have Android 8.1 have anything else to say/suggest?

Make sure you flash the AOSP userdata image. Can obtain it by compiling from source or grabbing it from one of the AOSP roms compiled from source. Just flash it in fastboot and then flash the rom in TWRP. Only need to flash userdata once.

Beta / Android 11 -I'm lost

Note: non-T-mobile variant straight from OnePlus's site (unlocked global)
I wanted to get Android 11 early so upon first beta release, I installed it. I had tons of troubles (like everyone else) and ultimately had to wipe my phone, which fixed many issues. I still have a few super annoying ones but it's mostly usable. I'm now on OP7Pro_02_Beta_4 and have been waiting for further fixes for months! My wife has the same phone and apparently at some point she got the Android 11 update (non beta) which I didn't know was pushed. Her phone is very stable with no issues.
Why the heck is my phone still on a broken and very much beta version when the stable release is out? I'm assuming my beta 4 is an earlier release than my wife's 11.0.1.1? I assumed my phone, getting beta releases, would end up on a stable version, but now I'm thinking it will only ever get beta updates? How are you supposed to compare beta vs regular release and how do I get back to a stable version? I'm guessing a wipe is the only way?
Lastly, does anybody recommend rooting this phone? I've ALWAYS rooted previous phones but I've been happy with the (mostly) bloat free unrooted OnePlus phones.
You get beta updates on the beta channel, stable updates on the stable channel. It's that simple.
You can upgrade to the latest stable using the inbuilt system updater itself. Your data will be wiped only if the firmware you're currently on has a security patch newer than the firmware you're going to upgrade to. I think you probably have March security patch on OB4 and 11.0.1.1 has May security patch, so you won't lose your data while switching.
I have had root access on my 7 Pro since day 1. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really need it. I just use a magisk module to change my font style to Google Sans. Then I use GravityBox for some statusbar and lockscreen tweaking. I also use Swift Installer for a proper dark (black) theme system wide.

How to Upgrade

It's been a long time since I've updated my phone and I've put it off additionally because I assume it'll be a nuisance. I'm on Omni version It's been a long time since I've updated my phone and I've put it off additionally because I assume it'll be a nuisance. I'm on Omni version 9-20190331-oneplus6-WEEKLY and think I may have never correctly rooted it, evidently by opening the TWRP app and Titanium Backup have issues so I have at least a couple concerns:
What ROM should I upgrade to? Thinking something like Lineage
How do I correctly update up Android 10 - then 11?
It's been so long since I've done this, are there other items I'm not thinking of?

You can go to omni A10 if you like. It is much better to go A10 ROM for stability but if you like A11 ROM it's up to you if bugs and issues does not bother you. But prior to upgrading you must upgrade first your base OOS to at least 10.3.9 in my opinion because 10.3.10 and 10.3.11 have issues in some people.

In my view, stock is the best option. The next release will be Android 11. However, if Custom rom's are your choice. I'd prefer to go with MIUI and my second will be Omni or other Enchilada versions. As they tend to use Google apps which in my view is not user friendly and intuitive to use. The most stable ones of them will be Lineage OS . The latest versions can be found over this forum.

Question Is there a guide on how to downgrade to android 11 and one ui 3.1 after Android 12 and one ui 4 garbage?

Looking to revert back to android 11 and need to know what to do to not brick my phone.
Currently have an unlocked galaxy s21 plus, Odin is installed and so is a 4 file firmware package for Android 11..
I have USB debugging checked and most things backed up before I perform a factory reset..
Is there anything else that I'm missing, am I completely wrong? Sorry, it's been a long time since I've done anything like this
As long as it wasn't a OTA upgrade that also updated the bootloader version you should be able to roll back.
Make sure all critical data is redundantly backed up. Verify it's all there and readable.
So did you succeed in this?
Edit: It's downgradeable ez pz. Just download the latest Android 11 and flash via Odin. I have the Exynos version.

Probably. On the N10+'s snaps apparently it's not so you can roll back from 12 to 11 but no further. I'm still running Pie and 10 on my N10+'s and will not upgrade either.

11 is the best iteration out of all mentioned, so I recommend you upgrade to that at least. 12 was a beta testing software, but 13 is again a step in the right direction and OneUI 5 is really becoming a powerhouse. Now if only they got rid of the bloatware, but that's also easier than ever to manage nowadays.

You'll have more luck finding answers in the S21 Ultra section. Can't remember the exact bootloader versions, but if it's one of the later ones, you won't be able to revert. Android 12 is a piece of trash.

I doubt that as cpu cycle sucking scoped storage is fully active on 11 and above. On Android 9 and 10* it isn't. Not willing to risk screwing up 2 fast, stable, clean running machines that are fulfilling their mission by changing the firmware. To hell with global elitist Google's disinformation and hype Gookill... I see you
Not vaxing my N10+'s either☠
Bloatware is easy to stop from at boot up on stock Samsung's with Package Disabler (not on Playstore). Fastest and easiest solution.
*haven't used my N10+ Android 10 much so I need to do a comparison with my other one loaded with Pie. Will a 2 5+ yo Pie load beat out a freshly loaded and configured Q load? Q seems to get slightly worse SOT, so far, but I need to play with it more as it may not be fully dialed in yet.
My oldest N10+/N975U/Pie runs like a bat out of hell. It's current load is 2.5+yo. It is my most stable platform of any OS in the last 18 years.

Question Is it possible to avoid OxygenOS Android 12?

I was happy with my OP9, but then I made the mistake of accepting the OTA update to the new OxygenOS built on android 12, and I had such a visceral bad reaction to it that I immediately decided to try out LineageOS. But I made a mistake and chose LineageOS 19 (also android 12) and discovered all the things I disliked came from A12, not OOS. And of course LineageOS came with it's own set of unexpected problems.
Thanks to this forum however, I've managed to revert back to OOS/A11. Yay!
I'd like to stick to A11 if possible, but without losing the security of grabbing the latest updates. Is there any hope for me?
