Hey guys,
Has anyone had any issues with their GPS where it seems to never lock onto any satellites. I only get a (very inaccurate) lock if I have WiFi on (presumably it's using assisted GPS to use WiFi locations to give an approximation).
If I disable WiFi, I get no location at all, even in clear sky and in the middle of a park with no nearby buildings.
Update: Factory reset did not resolve the issue. I have now sent it off to be warranty repaired via Google Authorised Service Provider.
Ordered a new one and will sell the old one when it arrives back.
Hi,
Accuracy is ok pretty good for me. Hopefully the new / repaired device will fix your issue...
Good luck,
Sébastien.

I have looked far and wide for a fix to my plagued Nexus S GPS and WiFi Signal problems. I tried GPS Test and erased all cached AGPS data. NO Towers show up. Left phone sitting there next to my window for more than 30 minutes.
Wifi Signal is always one bar while my iPod, Samsung Focus, HP Veer all get three to four bars. Including different SIM cards all recently new.
I've always tried the no battery cover trick to no end. Flashed several radios for my I9020A that i bought at best buy and nothing has helped.
I'm on 2.3.4.
Any ideas before I return this phone as a defective and give another a try?
As for the GPS, this is some sort of issue with the phone. There have been videos on YouTube explaining that it's something to do with the back cover they chose: they found that the GPS signal was stronger with the back cover removed. Not too practical.
I too have issues while using Navigation (on a bus...or even in a car sometimes...it must have a lead lines roof or something) with the Nexus S that weren't present in the Nexus One (which could lock onto satellites in a basement :what. This looks like something you can try to DRM, but it may not improve.
As for the Wifi signal, how far are you from the access point? What wireless technology are you setting up on your access point? (802.11a, b, g, or n?). If it's n? Are you trying to use the phone with a 5ghz N router? Finally, is there anything between your router and the phone that could cause interference?

Thanks for the reply chris.
I have major issues even outside. the most accurate I've seen the phone pinpoint is 2500 meters accuracy with clear skies and such.
As for my router, its a BHN SBG6580. Basically Motorola Surf Board. It's supposed to go up to N. No There isn't any kind of interference otherwise my other devices wouldn't pick up a good signal right?
Please will anyone suggest anything I really like my nexus s and it's My first real Android coming from window phones and the iPhone 4
Okay so interesting find. If I tether my nexus s to my iPod my iPod can locate itself within 20 meters where as my nexus can't locate itself with about a huge margin error where I should be. My iPod gets GPS from my Nexus S giving off wifi
Does this mean it could be an android bug causing his problem ?
That's odd. It looks like Google knows where the phone is (err..where the access point with the ESSID of your phone is) but the phone isn't picking up on it.
There's a program on market called GPS Toolkit (something like that) that has an option to refresh your AGPS cache this may help you get a fix more quickly. If this doesn't work out, it may well be worth it to get the phone replaced. Oh...and if you're not using stock firmware....give that a try as well.
If none of that works, and you're not able to resolve your wireless issues, you may want to consider taking the phone back or RMAing it. This combination of issues sounds a bit strange.

Thanks again for the reply Chris.
It looks like I'm going to bring it back to stock how I got it and return it for an exchange or just wait or for another AT&T phone that is actually decent. By the way it is on the stock ROM just rooted.
If the replacement if I do get one issued still has the problems I am at lost then. I had tried GPS test from the market and the one you mentioned without any resolve to my problem
Friend of mine recently told me her GPS on her verizon S3 stopped working. she brought it by, i flashed the newest build of cleanrom on it today and sure enough the GPS still doesnt work. everything needed is turned on but it doesnt get a lock. i checked it with the GPS Status app and it shows like 0/20 satellites and doesnt lock to any. only way i was able to actually get somewhat of a lock on google maps was to hook it up to WiFi and let it gather from that.
any suggestions?
Somewhat common problem. I haven't found a fix as of yet. There is a gps fix somewhere in these forums though that sort of helps. my phone had the same problem. Going back to stock or to any custom rom, nothing worked, the gps was just dead. After flashing one of the fixes I finally managed to get it to get locks, but it needs like 7-8 satellites to get a fix, is highly inaccurate, and loses gps lock a few times on every trip.
Here's the gps fix page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880411
I use Galaxy s3 test 3 alt, it's the only one that gets any lock for me. The first time and other intermittent times can take up to 10 minutes or more though, and rebooting the phone or trying again another day does sometimes help.
I know it is definitely the phone, as my pantech marauder which has the same SoC which should be very similar for gps location, finds and locks on to 6-8 towers in like 10 seconds or less all the time, even indoors, and gets location accurate to less than 100ft with 4 satellites while the gs3 needs 7-8 satellites to get a lock to 300-600ft
If none of the software fixes work. And the stock unrooted software does not receive GPS lock.
I would highly recommend replacing the GPS antenna just in case.
I'm 90% sure the headphone jack. External speaker. WiFi antenna and GPS antenna are all in one unit.
This piece is sold for cheap on Amazon. Or eBay or whatever.
Replacing is simply a removing a couple screws and popping the old one out.
Here is a link to eBay
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=160890063224
Possibly you could find one cheaper.
Hopefully this is it for you.
Let me know how it goes.

I too have the same problems on this rom
Hi,
I got a brand new LG G Pro 2 (Korean F350L version) in Canada. Everything works great except for the GPS which never get a lock. I upgraded the firmware (Sphinx V5a, stock 5.0...), factory reset, tried various GPS apps (GPS Status and test, FasterGPS...), but I still don't get any lock. On GPS Status Test & Fix, I always get 0/22 except once I got 4/20 but still no lock.
Does anybody have an idea of what to do to get a GPS lock? Any reason why a Korean version would not work in north America?
After reading a lot, I came to a likely conclusion that there may be a bad contact between the board and the GPS antenna. I see several fixes for Nexus 5 and Galaxy S3 or S4. I am willing to try this, but I can't find any schematic for the G Pro 2, so I have no idea where the GPS antenna is.
Does anyone could point me where the GPS antenna really are for the G Pro 2?
Thank you very much for your help!
Anyone?
Hi!
I recently bought a D838 and try to use it here in germany.
Unfortunately I have a similar problem as described in the first post. The phone can't get any GPS fix.
The app "GPS status" shows several satellites, but none of them are fixed.
I tried different ROMs, a few gps.conf modifications and let the phone search for a fix for about one hour. But without any positive result.
May that be a hardware problem? Would the phone find satellited, if there is a problem with the hardware?
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thank you!
Hi, mine proved to be hardware defective (likely a bad connection to antenna) and I had it replaced (so did not attempt a repair). The replacement worked like a charm. Basically, if you can have a replacement, I would go that route, otherwise, you could try to attempt a repair at a repair shop to resolder the antenna...
Thx for your answer. I will try to get a new device (or get it repaired - we will see).
Meanwhile I got another device, which shows the same behaviour.
Does anyone else have any idea what that problem may be?
In a absolutely free area in a hill I managed to get a GPS fix. At other places the phone can't get a fix.
Me LG G flex beside that has a good signal with fix, even in buildings.
I am really not an expert. It seems to me that both devices are defective in the sense that your GPS antennas are disconnected from your GPS chip. The chip can still get a fix without antenna in ideal conditions a bit like old FM radios could still get a strong signal without deploying its antenna). Based on my experience with my local phone repair shop, it would need the antennas to be resoldered on the GPS chip or get a replacement. Good luck!
Anyone with an s7 having issues with gps tracking and compass calibration?
I have and s7 edge and am curious if s7 owners have any issues with GPS. Whenever I use maps or navigation, despite an initial lock, gps fails to track. Despite moving a number of kilometres, maps show me unmoved...then lurches forward only to stand still again. I've attempted to clear and update AGPS using the GPS Test app...but no luck.
Compass calibration also seems to be an issue for a number of people. I have to recalibrate the compass after every restart. This recalibration has no effect on gps tracking. I could live with the recalibration of the compass but not an unusable gps.

I have the Verizon variant *SD820* and it's working well in southern California.
I have the snapdragon and have issues, once i had to reboot the phone three times just saturday to finally get it to locate and track. Another time (i live in georgia) it had me in Michigan traveling to atlanta when i was in georgia traveling to the atl!
I had GPS problems as well, but it was fixed by making sure Privacy and safety => Location => Locating method was set to "GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks" *BUT* the "Improve accuracy" had both "Wi-Fi scanning" and "Bluetooth scanning" were set to "Off" (somewhat counter-intuitive).
I decided to switch from the edge to the regular s7 (exynos).
My s7 still needs recalibration of the magnetic sensor after restart, but the GPS is working properly.

My GPS locks quickly and is very accurate. Best phone I've had, in this regard.
I had problems with GPS taking a very long time to get the fix and it turned out it was a hardware problem. I had the main board of the phone replaced under warranty and it works great now, I get the fix almost instantly.

Edit: Found another thread discussing GPS..
The GPS stopped functioning on my S7 (SM-G930W8) phone after about 3 months, and I can only get a sporadic signal when wi-fi and mobile networks are enabled in Location settings (High Accuracy or Battery Saving). If only GPS is selected, I am unable to get a signal at all.
I flashed a couple of different ROMS and firmware (Marshmallow and Nougat) after a factory reset to determine if the issue was software or hardware-related; it's hardware as the problem persisted after each reset and flash. An associate at the Samsung store suggested to replace the entire PCB as they assumed a problem with the GPS chip.
As my phone is rooted (and hence, a tripped Knox), I do not wish to pay Samsung $700+ to replace the board. I believe the more likely scenario is that perhaps the internal antenna has become damaged which is why I can not get a signal lock. As an aside, wi-fi signal isn't great and voice calls are beginning to drop.
I took it to authorized Samsung electronics repair store today and told them my story. They're currently running diagnostics on it and are going to check the internals to see if anything is awry. If the GPS chip is dead and in need of a new board, this will be my last Samsung device as I expect more from a flagship phone that's less than a year old.
I have a XT1540, rooted, stock 6.0 ROM. I am searching for advise on troubleshooting the poor performance of the GPS. Is there a way to determine if it is software or hardware related? Recently my GPS has been acting sporadically. Today I am getting a fix. Yesterday I did not. Last week in another location I never had a fix better than 30 meters since only 3 or 4 satellites were used in the solution. I don’t know if this is a software or hardware issue. I don’t know if this makes a difference, but I recently changed carriers from ConcumerCellular (AT&T SIM) to Mint which is a T-Mobile MVNO. I did have to open the phone a few times to change SIM cards, so is it possible the GPS antenna was damaged? I do have GPS Status and Toolbox, installed and have rest AGPS.. Maybe I was not patient enough for the update. I saw the XDA video on How to Make Your GPS Lock Faster. I have not tried changing my gps.conf file yet. The replacement file looks far different than the current file. Any suggestions or recommendations to restore my G3’s GPS reliability is appreciated.
Update and bump
So I restored an older ROM to a time I believe the GPS was working. The GPS performance did not improve. GPS status will show connection of 10/20, but no solution. And the few times I get a solution, the error is in the 100s of meters. Are there any recommendations before I trash this phone?
