[PRIVACY] When you force stop & disable Google Play Services, does that one action alone change your Android 12 Settings to remove Google spyware?
As part of the research in the thread on Google Maps no longer working only with GPS, and as a follow on to preventing Google from turning on Wi-Fi location scanning, I noticed something really INTERESTING when I forced stopped & disabled Google Play Services.
STEP 1
Google Play Services is running and Google Maps exists on Android 12 (but I'm never logged into anything because my phone is set up for privacy, which means there are no Google or Samsung accounts).
STEP 2
I force stop & disable Google Play Services.
STEP 3
That immediately causes Android 12 to complain about Google Maps not being able to work.
STEP 4
No big deal. So I force stop & disable Google Maps.
STEP 5
That not only stops Google Maps from complaining but that removes Google Maps from my homescreen.
STEP 6
Nice. But it also does two very interesting things (probably more I haven't noticed yet).
STEP 7
Notice that the Android 12 LOCATION SERVICES menu is now COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
(I tested this twice by re-enabling Google Play Services so it's definitely repeatable.)
STEP 8
Interestingly, even the Organic Maps offline maps app had its settings COMPLETELY CHANGED!
(Again, I tested this twice and it's consistent that these things are directly related.)
In summary, by force stopping & disabling Google Play Services, two things immediately happened.
1. The Android Location Services "google alert crap" was all completely wiped out (yay!)
2. Any app that had a switch for "Google Play Services" location spyware was also wiped out (yay!)
I just did it a few minutes ago and everything else seems to be working just fine (I will report back tomorrow)......
Can someone who knows more than I do about this shed some light on what's going on?

Latest Edition of Google Maps and Battery Life

After installing the latest edition of Google Maps, I noticed that it was using between 13-18% of my battery (after approx. 9 hours off the charger). I never opened Maps or Navigation, and when looking at its battery use, it's "stay awake" time was 0s.
I do have Google location services enabled, but as I said, I never used the Maps app or any other application that would require the use of standalone GPS services. And I always keep standalone (and VZW) location services off unless navigating. This was never a problem on older versions of Google Maps - is anyone else having this problem?
I also noticed my battery life was incrementally worse with this happening, which makes sense seeing as Google Maps ranks third behind Cell Standby and Screen on my battery usage log.
Any information or advice would be much appreciated!

All apps that use Location Services at all will show up as "Maps" in battery stats, so it can be really tricky to figure out which app is actually causing the problem. It's most likely an updated third-party app that has location permissions. Have you updated any other apps recently?
Recently, this happened to me with 1Weather - their update had some bug that caused the LocationServices service to run continuously, which led to Maps taking up the majority of my battery without using it. Uninstalled, and that fixed the problem.

That's interesting. The only apps I have that could have had location settings turned on were Facebook (chat), Flixster and Chrome. I turned off the location in Facebook chat, and the Flixster app says it uses network location only, so that shouldn't be an issue, right?
Also, I left location on for Chrome seeing as that would be the main benefit to keeping Google location services on.
I'll report back, hopefully the culprit was Facebook chat.
As a side not, uninstalling the Google Maps updates seems to have solved the problem, but I'd rather have the most up-to-date version of Maps.
If anyone else has any thoughts, I would really appreciate hearing them!
I froze maps and Google now and went from almost constant awake times overnight to nothing. Was losing 20% overnight sometimes. I don't use Google now and un freeze maps when I need navigation.

Thanks for the info on this, I've been wondering what's up with the maps battery usage.

[Q] SmartLock almost never works

Since a while I'm having big problems with SmartLock Trusted Places. When I'm @ home and having the home address from Google Maps enabled, it almost never works.
If I manually add my neighbors addresses as well it works for the moment but that result does not last.
If I go into the settings and add something it updates my location to the very address that is added automatically by enabling Home from Google Maps.
Location and location history is enabled on the device.
High accuracy, battery saving & device only all get the same result, it does not work.
Running 5.1 with Google Play services 7.0.97 (-438).
Does it work for you?
I actually just logged on to ask the same thing. It's been this way ever since 7.x dropped. It's so frustrating all the issues this new play services has caused.

How to fix Google Play Services Has Stopped ?

Hi all.
Out of the blue I got this error message every minute.
I use Unofficial Beanstalk ROM 5.0.2.
Stock kernel.
I cleared cache, and Dalvik. I also cleared cache of Google Play Services and Google Services Framework.
But this error keeps coming back.
I haven't changed anything in the phone nor have I messed with any system settings.
I can't find any decent solution to the problem.
The apk shows version 7.5.71 (1955121-438)
Appreciate your help.

AFAIK, there is no "decent" solution at this time.
Please change your Location setting to Device Only. It will stop the FCs for the time being.

No one knows why it happens or how to solve this? wierd.
How is this related to device location settings?
Out of nowhere I get "Google Play Services" has stopped working messages like every 20sek. Working with the phone is impossible and my Moto 360 doesn't work anymore either Using Stockrom CM12S with franco kernel, any ideas or solution?
Same problem here. This is so annoying!
Will try "device only" now. AFAIK this uses only GPS to get your current location - so this should dramaticly increase battery drain, right?
This trick didn't help
Same case. I am also getting these errors. there are solutions people have posted to disable GPS. But the phone is useless when it is without GPS.
Waiting for a fix ASAP.
For me it actually did! In another thread another solution came up: try enabling "keep awake", "wake up" and "autostart" in Privacy Guard for the Google Play Services. This also worked for me (although my Privacy Guard was not enabled for the Google Play Services the settings still did matter! So make sure to really enable them in the submenu!).
The random crashing seems to occur when:
location "high accuracy" PLUS Google Play Services are limited in Privacy Guard (keep awake, wake up, autostart)
Disabling one of the two should fix the problem.
BTW disabling GPS didn't solve the problem for me. "device only" means you only use GPS and not network location. The network location thing is what causes the crashing in combination with the Privacy Guard. So (at least for me) no need to disable GPS.
Looks good. Let me see if there is any issues now. I remember we all changed the "keep awake", "wake up" and "autostart" in Privacy Guard for the Google Play Services in an older version of Google Play Services.
Hope this is all fixed now and should not drain the battery (as it did in previous version).
How I solved the Play Services stopped FCs
Hardly this last version of Google Play Services will work properly, either clearing the data, blocking services on Privacy Guard, etc. Tested many things and the problem comes from the last update of Play Services, which includes in its changelog suspiciously some "Location Api improvements".
In my experience these last days the problem it seems to come when the services requests for location. If you use Apps asking frequently for locations you'll have the error very often, making usefulness your phone, as least mine. Using 3 Apps needing GPS location at same time is frustrating..
How I solved for now:
Go to Play Store, find Google Play Services in your Apps
Click on Uninstall (only will uninstall the last update of Google Play Services).
From that moment, some advice about certain Google Apps (Hangouts, Google Maps, etc.) may appear if you have these Apps installed. Ignore them, otherwise you'll need to update again if you want to use them, but...
But I can't find google play services in play store.

Same as TerrorApple. Disable Location services, but as this is needed often enable Location services only with GPS. This worked for my device

Huge CPU usage after update Google play services 12.7.x

Hi.
I got these problems these days:
1. My phone looses wifi signal and cannot reconnect again.
2. I activated cpu monitor from developer option and see huge CPU usage some time and fast battery draining.
3. Some time (when my phone cannot connect to the WiFi) I tried to soft rest the mate 8 then the phone hang and I have to use hard reset to reset the phone.
After that I checked my apps to find the problem and I saw the Google play service is updated to v 12.6.73 then I uninstalled the update in installed Google play services v 12.5.29
The problem is solved now but unfortunately the Google play services update automatically and then the problem begin again.
I cannot find any solution to disable Google play services automatically update .
(I have disabled automatic update from goolge play store but problem exist)

The problem is solved by updating my Google play services to beta version 12.6.85.

The location on my Pixel 2 stops updating in Google Maps and other third-party apps

It appears, I can't say conclusively, that around the time of the May security update on my Pixel 2, GPS and location services intermittently stop updating. For example, apps that use the phone's location (Google maps-- both on the handset and android auto, mapmyride, ingress) will not change my location as I move around. Sometimes, google maps on android auto will update, but only around every 10-20 seconds, and will place my blue dot someplace random in the vicinity, nowhere near me. Google Maps on Android Auto will say "Searching for GPS", Waze's location will just float around the map.
A restart will fix the problem, every time. But usually about once a day it comes back, requiring another restart. Very annoying.
I've done the following:
Cleared storage and cache for apps that use locations.
Cleared storage and cache for Google Maps.
Turned location services on and off, and set to "high accuracy"
Updated A-GPS data with GPS Status app.
Complete factory reset.
Any idea what could be going on? Thanks!
My wife's pixel 2 is having the same issues. She is about to toss her phone out of the moving car window on the interstate.

Any update on this? I have been seeing this on a Pixel 2, and I think I'm starting to see the same on a new Pixel 3 XL.
Strange, I only have this problem with Waze on Android Auto. It appears when I'm in a call, waze lost the gps signal. But when I switch to Google Maps and then immediately back to Waze the problem goes away until the next time I plug in my phone. I have this the april update I guess and definitely a waze update caused it.
