First off, I apologize if this the wrong spot. First thread and this category seemed appropriate. Now the main question. My PACman ROM I really love but the battery life is horrendous! I really like the ultimate customization but honestly the battery life is irritating. Now I want to switch to Viper. I was also planning to flash a custom kernel. ElementalX I believe it's called. Now I need help if I should switch. Many thanks!
EDIT 1: I installed Viper, it ran smoothly, but what I like to call "self plug-ins" are way to much from Venom. They have to many Venom/Viper apps and they are probably useless. So uninstalled and hopefully I'll research more of the tweaks for a better experience next time.

I haven't used PACman, but I'm a huge fan of CM10 (not 10.1 for me yet).
I used ViperOneS for about 7 months and enjoyed it, but it definitely still felt a little bloated (and that was using a custom kernel with the system overclocked and undervolted). The customization was nice, it had few bugs, and the sense camera is hard to beat. I have limited experience with Viper 2.0 - so someone else may need to chime in about it specifically. I used the de-Sensed installer and it still felt slightly bloated.
CM10 is a much cleaner experience in my opinion. Even without a custom kernel that has the chip overclocked, the ROM runs much more smoothly. It is nearly a perfect ROM except for the camera. It's not bad, but it's definitely nowhere near as good as Sense. I would also say that CM is more stable than Viper, but only slightly so.
It really comes down to what you value.
@ OP, what do you expect from this question? There are people who say Viper is great (including me) and others who will say it isn't worth it to switch. Just try and flash and see for yourself to get the best inside info about this ROM. After that you can tell us if it was worth it
Nit trying to be rude or something, but if you got a battery drain problem, then its probably not the ROM(although I use JellyBAM - not from xda), but something else. I used pacman in the past, and it was similar to Stoxk sense, or maybe a little better. Try a clean install, and try not to restore any settings. If battery life still isn't right, then its probably an app behaving poorly.

I'm just looking for a better battery life, smooth performance, and a just an overall easy experience. I'm used to Jellybean ROMs the most, so sense type are kinda new for me.

I've done so many reinstalls. Maybe in the past week I'll say 10. I played the pretty CPU and GPU demanding game ago. But I haven't played in awhile and it's not running.
Last night I finally mustered the courage to unlock my bootloader, root and flash Franco (which sounds dirty...), mostly for the improved battery life. I installed Greenify and Titanium, and I'm intrigued by Xposed, so I'll probably give that a go...but now what? What are the essential things I should do with my rooted Nexus 5?
My only "parameters" are that I want to stick with stock ROM (unless someone can make a compelling argument otherwise) and that I want to optimize battery life without compromising performance.
Your insights are much appreciated!
Backup and read. We can't advise any more than that.
Other than tibu, the only thing I use root for is an ad blocker, adaway is good.
I started my Nexus 5 with Cataclysm ROM, very close to stock with added features. No updates nightly like others, stays pretty much with Google stock yet the customization is what I needed. I'd check it out to see if it fits your needs. I also flashed the bionic optimization mods since I run ART but dalvik/bionic mods exist since Xposed currently isn't supported on ART (testing to see if any benefits as of now). Franco is good choice for kernel, waiting to see once r33 is released since very good chance of code change and WAY better battery as stated by the beta testers (minus current beta tester reboots and the memory issue). Mostly, since sticking near stock, the combinations of all these are all I personally needed. Make sure of nandroid before flashing since something may happen but I have not run into any issues yet.

install some system applications - for battery stats, CPU app(if you didn't buy franco's app), wakelock detector. If you are searching to get best battery life without losing performance, you will need to try different kernels (no need to remove and re flash ROM, just flash kernel zip files throught recovery). Essentially, you can try multi ROM feature (there is a thread about it), and try different ROM/kernel combinations, without losing/restoring your data, to find what is best for you. hope this helps

I'm mainly looking for Battery and Performance, don't really care for features, but they wouldn't hurt if skins were great.
I've chosen a kernel already, which will be Franco Kernel!
Due to it's features of battery saving.
Also another question I have is for things such as Nightly and Stable releases etc, do I need to do a clean wipe every time I wish to update versions of the rom?

well, generally, you arent allowed to post threads on xda asking about which rom(battery being the most requested). what is told to you is try out a few, decide which you like best, as we all have different needs and wants, and our devices all react differently. anyways, battery is not about rom or kernel(yes, you said you like franco for battery). battery life is nearly all about how you personally use your device, how you personally set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of your phone/data signal. everything else plays very little into it.
with every kernel someone will tell you that it gives the best battery life, someone will say it gives terrible battery life. there is no magic pill, it does not exist. i know you read about kernel so and so and its amazing battery life, but it is usually just fanboys spreading the use of the kernel.
anyways, if you are updating a rom, feel free to dirty flash it. no need to wipe.

One of the reasons I purchased the Nexus 5 is because it is Android at is purest. After I got the phone, I used it for a while without rooting it, until I needed to use an app that required root. So about a month after having the phone, I rooted it. Now I am finding some things that KitKat doesn't let you customize. They are all minor interface things but I'm sure everyone here can relate... I want more customization. So, here are my questions:
How long before you rooted and/or flashed a custom ROM?
Are you happy with the stability of your custom ROM?
Any difference in battery life?
Which custom ROM are you using and why?
1. Day one I rooted.
2. Most roms on a nexus are stable... Except maybe some nighties, which are works in progress.
3. Roms have very little impact on battery life.... So don't use that as a deciding point.
4. Mostly you'll just get a list of the most popular roms when you ask that. But I'll say Graviton. Cause it's a little different than some... And the Dev is very active in his rom thread. Always a good thing.
5. questions go in Q&A. For future reference. ?

I have rooted the device, the first day I got it, uninstalled bloatware and other crap, installed *my* favorite Apple and I am happy. I did Not finden *any* thing, which could not be customized. What specific point are you missing in customization? My device runs fine, I use Greenify app, so the battery runs about 48 to 60 hours depending on the programs I use. Video is more battery consuming that making a call of course.

Wow, I just started using Xposed on my tablet but didn't realize it was capable of all of this. Definitely going to try this out before flashing a new ROM.
P.S. Sorry, not sure what I was thinking... for some reason, I thought I was posting in Q&A.
I left it for 3 months. Then used xposed and gravity box to get the notification toggles the way they should be.
I shouldn't have to have it take me into settings to toggle data on and off.
Other than that stock is pretty well perfect for me.

Stock Nexus is Android at its purest... with Google apps and services added.
After the OTA images of Lollipop came out, I knew since I was rooted, I would have to do a manual install. So I'm back to stock (non-rooted). Right now, I don't see a reason to root. So far Lollipop 5.0 is serving it's purpose. Yet another huge step in the right direction by Google.
Flashed 5.0 factory images the day they came out, was not satisfied with the OS as a whole, so now flashed a custom ROM Mahdi till 5.x.x comes out or any AOSP 5.0 rom comes out.

AOSP 5.0 roms are already out.
I ordered mine Oct 31 last year. Unlocked the bootloader day one. Probably stayed stock for a bit, don't know how many custom ROMs were out at the start.
Stayed on Cataclysm for a long time, went to Purity. Flashed stock 5.0, was on that a few days and now a custom ROM again.

I know about that, no offense to the current rom builders but I was more like waiting for slimpop or cm12 or paranoid android roms. But I have a question most of the roms come with gapps built in them which i find confusing as no rom built from source should do that, or are they just themed or mod-ed stock roms?(which is the primary reason i haven't yet tried them out)

1 - an hour
2 - I'm on lollipop rooted stock. The custom ROM team slim don't have a ROM for L yet
3 - no. This is entirely down to the user I'll expand below
4 - waiting for Slim. Suits my needs. Unique and useful features

There is no such thing as a best ROM.* The question itself is*ambiguous.* "Best" is obviously a subjective term.
What I want from a ROM may well differ from what you want from a ROM,*ergo - what is best for me could be worst for you.
If you are asking what the most popular ROMs are, or which ROMs people*are using, you can see which threads stay around on the first few*pages (and have the most posts) in the*Android*Development or*Original*Android Development forums. You can also see what other people*are running by reading the*What*are you running on your Nexus 5 thread.
If you are asking which is the most stable, being a Nexus device -*they're all pretty stable.
If you are asking which is best on Battery, ROMs only affect battery*if they have a feature that is badly coded.* You will likely be able*to read about this in the ROM threads.* ROMs do not impact battery*life.* The only impact to battery life are your apps, your settings,*how you use the phone and mostly, environmental issues such as Phone*Signal.

"Best" Kernel

Thanks for the info. That is not what I'm asking or referring to. My main purpose for posting this was to see how other Nexus5 users are using their phones... I kind of wish I had named the thread after the poll I put up: What best describes the usage of your Nexus 5?

Hello guys.
I bought an 8T during Christmas and I instantly installed LineageOS because I wanted less bloatware as possibile and more privacy, since I read some articles regarding OxygenOS telemetry and sending data back to servers in China.
I also installed a custom kernel which was GREAT, battery drain was super low and it was so smooth, but since latest builds LineageOS doesn't work with custom kernels anymore because WiFi breaks.
When flashing back Lineage's kernel I couldn't help but wonder: am I using the device to its best with this setup? I really miss the custom kernels and I noticed that most of them are supported only on OxygenOS. OxygenOS could also probably have proprietary code that is optimized to the device and full support (for example, I lose the 48 MP camera with custom ROMs. Not a big deal at all, but still)
So what do you guys think? Do you like OxygenOS or prefer custom ROMs? Can I remove enough bloatware to make it a bit lighter and secure? Is it too early to use custom ROMs with this new device?
Let me know what you guys think and what your 8T setups look like!

Seriously I don't care about some data which will be send back to China. Not even sure if it's real.
I have deactivated all bloatware apps which I don't need or use with swift backup.
Idle drain is about 1% and i can easily reach 7h and more SOT without any other battery optimizations or kernel settings. Wifi, Data, 120hz for example always on.
So far I'm happy with it.

The main reason I'm tempted to go back to stock OxygenOS is, as you already know, the custom kernels low battery drain and great performance. I tried both Radioactive kernel and Bluspark kernel and they're amazing. I'm really tempted now to go back to stock; I just hope Oneplus won't be super slow with the updates!

I am also sure there will be an increase in custom kernels that support linage OS soon as well, if you just wait.

I would recommend you to try both of them for a week and judge by yourself. I started with Radioactive kernel which was really good, that's what made me fall in love with custom kernels. I tried switching to Bluspark kernel to see if WiFi worked there, but it didn't, just like Radioactive kernel, so I didn't really use it that much.
But now, if both would support LineageOS (or if I'm going back to stock), I'd go for Bluspark. The developer was really helpful in trying to debug why the kernel wasn't working for LineageOS, he even did 4/5 test builds just for me to try to debug it, even if he clearly wrote he didn't care about debugging custom ROMs.
Also, the features look better tbh, but flashing a custom kernel takes like 1 minute, so you can switch between the two really easily if you want to try both of them.
I am also sure there will be an increase in custom kernels that support linage OS soon as well, if you just wait.

I'm not sure about that, I asked LineageOS developer and he clearly said he doesn't care about making his work harder just to support custom kernels, and custom kernels developers tried (like eng_stk for Bluspark) multiple times with no success, I think he kinda gave up; he told me it was something he wasn't going to try to tackle.
Tried asking in Radioactive kernel's thread but they told me that "I was lucky it even worked before.....it's not for AOSP roms"
I have tried other custom ROMs, but always ends up going back to Stock. OOS is pretty solid at this point minus a couple of minor issues. Something always doesn't work on custom ROMs
I tried lineage and evolutionX roms but both times moved back to OOS. Its the first stock rom i like. I use magisk canary for root with a few modules and radioactive kernel which gives awesome battery life. I didn't even realize the difference till now. I haven't reinstalled radioactive yet since moving back to stock rom yesterday and the difference is night and day to me.

Blu Spark is pretty good too..Yes, OOS with either Radioactive or Blu Spark gives stellar battery life...Overnight I am losing 0% battery for 8 hours which is unheard of at least for me...
Hmm, I might wait some time to see if some other ROMs come out or I can somehow install a custom kernel, before switching back to stock. But at least I know that OxygenOS is pretty good stock! Thanks for your opinion guys. I hope Oneplus will keep releasing updates for quite some time then.
There is also Neutrino kernel coming. Alpha 3 is already out and as i have heard next update will be beta. I'm gonna test it.

Im using it right now. It's the first day and it already seems to be better than bluspark.

So far it's pretty good. Got 9h SOT yesterday at almost the same usage. With Bluspark it was like 8h maybe. They are both great kernel. Performance is similar and also system is very smooth.
