First off, I apologize if this the wrong spot. First thread and this category seemed appropriate. Now the main question. My PACman ROM I really love but the battery life is horrendous! I really like the ultimate customization but honestly the battery life is irritating. Now I want to switch to Viper. I was also planning to flash a custom kernel. ElementalX I believe it's called. Now I need help if I should switch. Many thanks!
EDIT 1: I installed Viper, it ran smoothly, but what I like to call "self plug-ins" are way to much from Venom. They have to many Venom/Viper apps and they are probably useless. So uninstalled and hopefully I'll research more of the tweaks for a better experience next time.

I haven't used PACman, but I'm a huge fan of CM10 (not 10.1 for me yet).
I used ViperOneS for about 7 months and enjoyed it, but it definitely still felt a little bloated (and that was using a custom kernel with the system overclocked and undervolted). The customization was nice, it had few bugs, and the sense camera is hard to beat. I have limited experience with Viper 2.0 - so someone else may need to chime in about it specifically. I used the de-Sensed installer and it still felt slightly bloated.
CM10 is a much cleaner experience in my opinion. Even without a custom kernel that has the chip overclocked, the ROM runs much more smoothly. It is nearly a perfect ROM except for the camera. It's not bad, but it's definitely nowhere near as good as Sense. I would also say that CM is more stable than Viper, but only slightly so.
It really comes down to what you value.
@ OP, what do you expect from this question? There are people who say Viper is great (including me) and others who will say it isn't worth it to switch. Just try and flash and see for yourself to get the best inside info about this ROM. After that you can tell us if it was worth it
Nit trying to be rude or something, but if you got a battery drain problem, then its probably not the ROM(although I use JellyBAM - not from xda), but something else. I'm just looking for a better battery life, smooth performance, and a just an overall easy experience. I'm used to Jellybean ROMs the most, so sense type are kinda new for me.

I've done so many reinstalls. Maybe in the past week I'll say 10. I played the pretty CPU and GPU demanding game ago. But I haven't played in awhile and it's not running.

Alright Nexus S community, First off i will say thank you to all the devs and your hard work... i havnt even begun to use all of your awesome work but there SO MUCH stuff in this forum its nutz!
I have been on an lg p500 for awhile now, running a nice CM7 port. Recently i have been given the opportunity to get a Nexus S for CHEAP. I figured why not!
So i come to you guys after about 2 hours of reading through the various threads on kernels and roms.
I am going to be looking for the combination of a kernel / rom that produces the best battery life, with good performance. It doesnt have to be the best rom in benchmarks. But one thats stable with good battery life... with a SMOOTH UI.
Obviously there is alot of developing right now due to the drop of 4.0.4... im just trying to narrow down which rom i will use and which kernel.
suggestions welcome!

Most ROMs that aren't HEAVILY edited don't vary much in battery life. The kernel can change the battery life a little, but it sits heavily on whether or not you are OCing/OVing. An extreme undervolt could also give you a tiny, probably negligible, boost. This is something you can change in each kernel anyway though.
As always, the biggest problem you'll face is something keeping the phone awake through a wakelock, or be woken up constantly, as well as the screen being on. No unnecessary wakelocks while idling, no rogue apps using transferring data for no reason while screen is off and no heavy OC --> great battery life.
Try out a range of ROMs and Kernels which have the features you want, here on the Nexus S forums they're all top notch

thats my problem! SO MANY awesome choices! hmmm which one to start with first.
Pick the ones which have all the features you want first, then move onto the ones which are missing one or two, and so on. TitaniumBackup will be your best friend

yes, all of them
first find a rom you like, then try all the kernels. the kernels can make a difference to the rom. it can make it worse, or much better. really, there are so many differences of opinions to whats good, as many opinions as there are users. but, being in the nexus s community, its really hard to make a wrong choice. there is just that much quality here.
personally, i use unofficial cm9 kangs as my rom with all the trinity kernels. but, i do make it a habit of trying all the kernels(and most the roms) at least once

Pretty much this. Everyone has their personal favourite which means very little to you. Give all of the ones with features you need a try, and once you're happy with a particular ROM give it a shot with various kernels. Later you can expand your horizons.
I'm pretty sure there was a topic not too long ago about how hard it is to choose ROMs and Kernels because there are just so many of them.

well this is good to hear.
In the lg p500 community we had alot of roms that were almost nearly the same, and a buncha junky ones, with a few good standout roms....
Guess once i get the nexus ill begin a flashin and playing!

Howdy, So I just got my first smart phone a few weeks ago, the AT&T Skyrocket. Kinda odd since I have been in IT works for many years that it took so long but could never afford the upgrade, my cars sap every spare penny lol.
After getting the phone I spent a few days getting to know it and then rooted it so I could use Titanium backup.
Now long story short due to an unrelated issue with ATT they sent me another phone to fix an issue I told them was on their end (and sure enough, it is, I think I figured it out though, anyone else get charged for a text message when the ATT family map "pings" the device?).
So for the time being I have 2 skyrocket phones and figured this was as good a time as any to try out another rom/kernal on the 2nd phone in case I don't like it my phone will remain untouched (I am picky about how my computers are setup).
So that is the history lesson, I have read sooo much the last few weeks it has gave me a good handle on the general process ect. My issue is picking out an actual rom/kernal to use, I have read so much they are all just one big garble of random info and I could use some advice to pick out what would work for me.
Here is what I want out of a rom/Kernal:
Clock speeds/voltages unlocked, I am an oldschool overclocker so naturally I feel everything can be made better.
Better battery life, Right now the battery life is ok but a bit too close for my tastes and I also feel it is just draining too fast for what I am doing (about ~8-10%/Hour average).
Some improvements like the light meter being linear vs having big steps would also be nice, I know the sensor itself can do it from the the screens but the software just goes in steps I guess.
Stable! I want something rock solid stable that I can count on for a long time to come.
Thats about it, The stock rom works fine for my needs minus those complaints. The clock/voltages being the biggest complaint if I had to go with only a kernal to keep a stable ROM.
So what suggestions do ya'll have? Is there by any chance a modded stock rom that is just debloated ect but will still be stable, that would work nice if it helped battery life some combined with a kernal I think.
I don't mind trying a few combos of roms/kernals but only have a week or 2 before I have to send this phone back and would need to fully test each one so I figure I only have time to do that on a handful in that time frame (I am very through)
Rom I have no clue what would work best for me. Kernal the Faux looks pretty good for my goals but I am not sure.
Any advice would be great.
From personal experience, anything made by forum member mhx is incredible. His ROMs are always super stable and and stripped of bloat. It also has the best battery out of all the ROMs I've tried.

That brings up another question I have. I keep reading all this stuff about ICS but have not been able to figure out why it is such a big deal. Looks like just a different theme to me or is it more then that?
Is it more like going from windows 95 to 98? Or like 98 to Windows 7?
Is it worth going with ICS over the gingerbread?
Lastly I notice that they say they come with kernels, Does that mean I have to use those kernels? I assume this is not the case since you are using a different kernel but better safe then sorry.

If you are wanting a rock solid stable phone I would avoid the ICS madness for now, it's not quite perfected yet. You don't have to use the kernel they come with.

Thanks, I was kinda thinking that. For future reference, what does ICS offer that Gingerbread doesn't?
So I take it that this means there are stable gingerbread roms that should at least come close to stock for reliability/functionality long term? Any opinion on the above mentioned rom/Kernal combo?

Thanks for that, I had not seen a list of the features listed out like that before. I think I am starting to see what all the buzz is now.
I plan on flashing the rom/kernel you posted earlier tonight, if anyone else has a suggestion for a follow up combo to try feel free to share!
Last I heard OCing of ICS is not possible yet, so since you mentioned that, ICS is out for a good while.

Ah, yeah that would put that off for a little while. Think I might try it out before returning the phone so at least I know if I am interested in it but just gonna stick with the most stable gingerbread rom for now.

Yeah there are a number of stable GB roms. nexusmod4, mhx superlite, seanz skyics, tpcv3, silver ROM. Read through the threads and see what people think. I prefer nexusmod as my daily, but all those are good

Thanks, out of those the MHX, nexus and silver rom look to be the most up my alley, should at least give me a good idea if an aftermarket rom is for me.
One question I have is they all mention needing new Modem files flashed? This is different then the radios? Anything I should know about that aspect of it?

agreed, all those x listed have proven to be extrememly stable. For best battery life with OC'ing and undervolting support use any of those roms with faux's 010m kernel. I was getting 1% battery almost every two hours with that, fauxclock app undervolt -100mV, and tpc v3, before i switched to ics

I just flashed the 010m kernel on the stock rom to play with that first and ran into something I am not sure about.
I tried both system tuner and fauxclock, at first everything was working as it should then I noticed that the 2nd core said "offline" and it won't seem to come on no matter what even while running stress tests. Any ideas?

It's more than that. It's a lot smoother and faster, better performance in everything, hardware accelerated UI, better multitasking.
It's the biggest update the OS has ever gotten, period. Yeah, it's still Android at the end of the day, but it's a pretty big refinement.

Yeah, I am starting to see that.
Back to the issue of the 2nd core going offline, After some playing around the only way I could seem to get it to come back online was to install SetCPU along with fauxclock. This seems to make the 2nd core come online but I am worried that running both apps will cause issues with them fighting over who has control?
I much prefer setCPU for the clock speed controls due to the profiles I can create but no voltage control. Is it possible to use the faux for voltage and the setCPU for clock speed control? Or am I asking for problems?

Definately asking for problems. Only use ONE cpu controlling app. SetCPU does have better profiles but fauxclock has a few. Which rom were u using it with? It does disable the 2nd core by default to save battery, but enabled it as soon as it is required (i.e. games and/or benchmark.) TO check run a force close setcpu and run a benchmark, then home back to menu and run setcpu, it will show 2nd core as active.

I tried that, the 2nd core stays offline no matter what I do unless I run setcpu.
I would just run setCPU but then I would not be able to undervolt. I wounder if I could use one of these scripts http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20946429&postcount=574
That would take care of the undervolt and then use setcpu to handle the clock speeds? That would seem to be the best of both worlds.
not recommended. Use system tuner instead. It has almost as much profile control as setcpu, but the voltage control of fauxclock. It also has an option to force both cores online.

I tried it but didn't care for it. Still didn't have the profiling options I want. I like the setcpu since I can set it to have different CPU speeds at different times/situations. Maybe that is not worth the power savings. Whats wrong with setcpu?
I also had the same problem with system tuner as well, it would not bring the 2nd core online.
I was hoping to get some of your guys' input. SynergyROM's or CleanROM? Not just newest specific builds but ROM in general. I've been on Synergy since the day I have rooted by GS3 but read somewhere that it might not be as good as CleanROM but I can't find specific reason in the development section so I thought I'd post this here. I like Synergy and the kernel it comes with but I like to flash things in order to test so hopefully I could get some specifics.

Well, I will say this...I was using SynergyRom Nightly v1.7 a few days ago and I since switched over to CleanRom 2.0/CleanKernel 1.0 and it was much smoother than Synergy!! I was experiencing alot of lag going between apps and homescreen. I just flashed CleanRom 2.1 and it just keeps getting better!! I would suggest to you to try CleanRom 2.1, and im pretty sure you will be pleased with this build.

I think I will flash it right now. I'm a flash-aholic but I generally try to stick with one "brand." I've read some great things about CleanROM so I think it's time to switch and check it out

Then came along Scott who used to dev for the Rezound which I had and ran his CleanROM on that phone.
Long story short, my vote is for CleanROM 2.1. By a decent margin actually. It's just smoother and faster. Not only is real world performance better, but benchmarks are better too.

Funny you say that about the Rezound...I just installed CleanRom Standard 4.5 on my wifes Rezound the other night because I couldnt get any other Rom to work on her phone and it runs great and momma is happy about here phone not being all "Bloated" up...lol... and it runs great!

Have you noticed any difference in battery life from Synergy to CleanROM? I've been on the Synergy nightlies up to now and am looking for a change...

For me, I have had much better battery life on the SynergyROM (Ziggy kernel) but now I'm trying out that 747 kernel...seems ok. I still have SynergyROM r55 saved and that was the best for battery for me. I use battery monitor widget and always look at the mA's that are being used up and the numbers staid low on r55. They staid much lower on the games I played and also in general. That app kind of gives me the best idea as far as consumption. Its great!
But the ROM itself seems a lot smoother with fewer FC's on things.

I'm on CleanROM 2.0 and it seems great. No problems whatsoever, and good enough battery life for me. I was on Synergy 1.4 before, that was fine too. But all of the nightlies seem fraught with problems creeping in, and I don't want to reflash a lot of times. What I really want is a ROM that is reliable, and will work with the APP2ExtSD hack, but none I've tried does it.

I don't think they are pointless at all. Just looking for some feedback. Replies like yours are pointless and do nothing for the thread. I have been curious too, and the thread gave me some insight.

Agreed. That's the point of these threads/forums is to ask questions and get input not just from the devs but also from the users and everybody's wealth of knowledge.
It's because of the input here that I have decided to give CleanROM a shot. Sure I could have flashed it and not noticed a difference but I wanted some concrete statements from the many users who could give me some facts about the differences in the ROMs. Anyway, both Dev's are brilliant...I wish I could somehow use the Kernel from Synergys r55 ROM on CleanROM...I'll have to see if there is a way to extract just the kernel from the r55 zip
My experience with synergy Rom wasn't pleasant. There is too much going on especially since it's in nightlies. Nit the best of battery life either. I've been following Scott's cleanrom and cleankernel. This combo has surpassed all my expectations. Great battery life and performance. Very stable and clean. If you want to get the most usage with the top performance install cleanrom. Cleankernel and leankernel are neck in neck for me. They both do as advertised. I just like cleankernel because it is made to be stable and save battery while delivering performance. I'm running at 1ghz and there is no lag.

1ghz ... damn...I have mine at 1.2 and also get amazing battery life....thanks for the input. The more and more I use it, the more I'm liking CleanROM!
I enjoyed Synergy! Everything I used on a day to day basis was running without any hiccups.

I am a noob at this stuff still and flashed Clean ROM 2.1 and CleanKernel 1.2 last night, which was my first ROM. I LOVE it compared to the stock Touchwiz OS. It's OH so smooth and zippy! I will probably stick with this rom for a good while! I installed the Nova launcher to try it out and like it as well. I REALLY like the fact that you can change the quick panel widget buttons!!! I am experiencing a small problem however, and wanted to see if anyone else was running into the same thing...
Using the stock alarm clock widget I set my music by choosing one of my music files, but every time I click on "choose file" it locks up and says that the clock has stopped working. It also happens when I try and choose a ringtone for a specific contact out of my music files. I have searched the clean rom thread and one other person was having the issue, but no one else was, so it never got addressed. And being new to the forum, I can't post on that thread yet.
Anyone else having this issue?

I think that's because u r on nova launcher, I also use it and that's only because I can change the pixel density so everything is much smaller ( I use an app called density changer its awesome when set to 240)but anyway go into the stock music player find a song click and hold on it and then you will have the option of selecting it as an alarm clock that has worked for me.
So I just rooted a friend's MyTouch 4G Slide and now trying to figure out which ROM to use. I have her trying JellyKang 1.8 which so far has been a horrible nightmare in terms of battery life on her device. So is there any advice on either a better ROM that doesn't have a battery drain issue or a kernel that might work better with JellyKang?
Also how hard is it to s-off this device? The laptop I would be using is running Windows 7 x64 if that helps any. I noticed mentions of the wire trick but beyond that what do I need in order to get this done? This would make swapping kernels much easier.

A "best ROM" thread always gets a lot of controversy. Everyone has different needs and opinions on what is/isn't important to them. If best battery life and everything working without glitches is paramount (my criteria), then a stock-based ROM like Miktouch 0.7 will work best for you. There are some newer ROMs that offer good performance with minimal glitches, though, so read through the comments on them in the Dev forum and make your informed decision.

Yeah I certainly understand what you mean by controversy. I'll try Miktouch since to be honest my friend isn't quite liking the AOSP/CM experience so far. Thanks!
Well I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for as this is the first time i'll ever install a custom rom.
I'm mainly looking for Battery and Performance, don't really care for features, but they wouldn't hurt if skins were great.
I've chosen a kernel already, which will be Franco Kernel!
Due to it's features of battery saving.
Also another question I have is for things such as Nightly and Stable releases etc, do I need to do a clean wipe every time I wish to update versions of the rom?

well, generally, you arent allowed to post threads on xda asking about which rom(battery being the most requested). what is told to you is try out a few, decide which you like best, as we all have different needs and wants, and our devices all react differently. anyways, battery is not about rom or kernel(yes, you said you like franco for battery). battery life is nearly all about how you personally use your device, how you personally set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of your phone/data signal. everything else plays very little into it.
with every kernel someone will tell you that it gives the best battery life, someone will say it gives terrible battery life. there is no magic pill, it does not exist. i know you read about kernel so and so and its amazing battery life, but it is usually just fanboys spreading the use of the kernel.
anyways, if you are updating a rom, feel free to dirty flash it. no need to wipe.
