Why do the latest phones lack the FM Radio feature but phones from 2012 do? - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
I wonder why you can't listen to any FM Radio station with the latest phones when connecting some headphones (I personally use the Realme 8i) but you can with older phones. I love listening to my favourite radio station and I was able to do that with my old Samsung S3 GT-I9300 (2012). I don't understand why I need an app that requires an Internet connection to listen to my favourite radio station while I could do that with a pair of headphones. Can you please explain why I can't listen to the radio by using my headphones with modern phones, and tell me if there is a way to do that?
Thanks,
Chris

That's just sad...

More and more manufacturers no longer include the hardware chip in their new smartphones due to cost reduction considerations. In some other cases, various carriers even disable the functionality of the FM radio hardware to force users to use more mobile data.

I use shoutcast website to find various (almost commercial free mostly) internet radio stations. I create M3U playlist for each radio station (using Winamp) and save them to my device in a folder I created called (internet radio stations) I have created shortcuts to each of my favorite radio stations in ultimate launch and had it load TCPMP to play each radio station. Works like a charm for me - I have a dedicated Ultimate launch page strictly for my favorite internet radio stations. Too bad I can't get a good unlimited data plan in Canada to listen to them whenever I want (such as in my car) but I use it all the time when connected to WIFI.

I'm not interested in internet radio stations, I'm interested in the stations locally owned by ClearChannel, and other ClearChannel stations nationally that I enjoy.

You do understand that unless you are listening to FM or AM radio on your device - If it is capable - that anything else is basically online Internet streaming radio - It may be a live radio station streaming over the net or a purely internet radio station. The concept I mentioned above of having your favorite stations can still apply.
Perhaps what you are looking for is an easier way? An all in one app that will be preprgramed with your favorite online radio stations.
There is a serius/XM Satellite radio app available in this forum - take a look at that - you will need to subscribe to Serius or XM radio to get your online listening account and password - (this i still internet radio - Serius or XM Streaming live over the internet)

I hear you,WN. It's not an app but I use a work around call The Mobile Stream Center. I think they also have an Iphone app. Anyway, it's online streaming through media player. It's actual stations!!! I listen to three Clear Channel sations here in New Orleans. You can search the list of stations by their call letters.

Yes, I know technically it is "internet streaming radio", however these are local stations, and that is what I would prefer to listen to.
The application is completely free for the iPhone. I'm not going to pay for something that does something similar for a WinMo phone when I feel I have the superior product in the first place.
Given that ClearChannel has it's database of these local stations and their Streaming IDs online, it should be quite simple for a handy programmer to retrieve that list and build it into an app that utilizes perhaps WMP.

Want to listen to some UK stations? Check out my latest hack!

I’ve been told it’s impossible to play back, say, UK-based LBC on Windows Mobile, while, for example, the iPhone already has a client for this station.
Being a streaming & Internet protocol freak (I *really* hope you’ve read my past, streaming-related tutorials and bibles), I quickly captured the real URL behind the stream. Just click the link: Windows Media Player Mobile will start and play it back. Now, you can’t say I don’t provide you with some very nice, self-invented hacks to show to your iPhone friends (“yes, I know, so far, it was impossible to play back this stream under Windows Mobile; this, however, isn’t the case any more”) ;-) Incidentally, you may also want to ask me to provide access to some of the multimedia streams you want to play back on WinMo - I may be able to help you with them too. Please, public messages / requests only, for example, under this article so that the other readers can also learn from our discussion / my solution. No private messages are answered!
I, however, didn’t stop at that. I’ve continued investigating the other streams on the same streaming server, Mediaweb-Musicradio to help my readers wanting to listen to them: I’ve quickly coded a small program to dump all the available streams. They’re as follows:
Capital Radio
Gold
XFM London
Beacon Radio
Leicester Sound
Mercia FM
Derby's RAM FM 102.8
Wyvern FM
Fun Radio
XFM Manchester
Champion 103
Ten-17 FM
Mercury 96.6 FM
Mercury 102.7 FM
103.1 Beacon Radio
Nottingham's 96 Trent FM
Planet Rock
Classic FM
Chill
GWR FM Bristol
BRMB
BRMB - low
XFM Scotland
XFM Manchester
Red Dragon
Red Dragon
Invicta FM
Ocean FM
Power FM
Power FM - low
Fox FM
Capital Radio
Southern FM
Our Kind of Music
Classic FM TV
LBC 1152
Heart Digital
The Arrow
You can also access the list HERE as a simple HTML file. If you download the HTML file and store it on your phone, you won’t even need to reconnect to my server to access the list – just tap the HTML file and you can instantly click any of the stations. If you don’t want to do this, you may still want to prefer bookmarking this HTML file and not the one embedded in this article to reduce the waiting time for the article to download and render.
As usual, I provide you with the source of my app to see how it does it magic; it’s available HERE (it’s a Java app.) The above is the (manually) verified list of the stations listed in the directory, generated by this app. Unfortunately, few stations of the full list work. Nevertheless, I really hope you’ll like it.</p>

Maybe put FM TRANSMITTER FOR HD2/NEXUS ONE in the title
I vote for a better title also...
Make it clear, because this title sounds like a noob that do not search creating a thread that will be shut down in a matter of minutes.
Maybe something like: "We need help to activate FM transmitter in HD2"
Hey hoss, congrats on Egypt's great win yesterday.
Can you please use proper capitalization in the title? Like what zefiltrin posted: "We need help to activate FM transmitter in HD2".
I have an HD2 and it would be immensely useful to have an FM transmitter!
As I wrote before, FmRadioSDK.dll and HTCFM.dll are wrappers, not drivers.
HTCFM.DLL is wrapper of FmRadioSDK.dll. FMRadioSDK is wrapper of Bluetooth Stack.
Bluetooth stack decode data and forward request and hide all implementation details inside.
I bet HTC doesn't know those implementation details and broadcomm won't tell anybody (unless pay for it?).
we need to work on BT related files.
I posted key functions within FMRadioSDK in FM RDS thread before.
I think we have to write a tool to inject bluetooth stack/driver to see how things work.
The worst thing could be bluetooth stop working while our program control FM Transmitter etc.

Hello my friends,
Can you explain me why you want to make an FM transmitter with HD2 / Nexus ?
And what is the Mhz ?
22MHZ to 200 MHZ ?
Thanks a lot,

I can answer question #1 - simply because its,
cool, fun, and useful (in the car/hookup to stream your music to a sound system and you forgot the cable and maybe just got the headset)

An FM transmitter, as mentioned above, is useful for sending music to your car's radio in case it doesn't have an audio in jack or you don't want additional wiring.
As for the frequency, that would the regular FM channels' frequencies which fall in the range of 87.5-108.0 MHz. Ideally, if FM transmission was achieved on HD2/N1, it should be able to transmit at low power at any frequency falling within that range. The user would choose the frequency at which there is least interference in his location and use it to transmit low-power FM signals that his car can pick up.
I just played with FM transmitter feature of a prototype nokia phone.
Interestingly it prompts me to unplug accessories (headset) in order to enable FM Transmitter.
That means FM Transmitter is not using headset as antenna.
Looking at size of this device I don't think it use large/long internal antenna either.
Also read some internal documents related to broadcomm BCM chipset. Broadcomm provided SDK to manufactures rather than giving them hardware interface documents. The phone must sends a set of RAM initialization data to the BCM chipset after reset otherwise the chipset won't response to any commands.
In other word, we will need two things:
1. Find a device that using same chipset to provide FM transmitter. So we will know initialization data and control commands.
2. reverse engineer Broadcomm SDK/FM Radio on HD2 to understand the hardware ports.
After that it is possible to write a hardware driver for HD2.
ps. I think FM transmitter is useless. I have one at home. sound quality is too poor, even worse than WM radio. feels like a low pass filter.
And have to keep changing frequency when traveling between cities.
I spent £ 15 bought a cheapest mp3 in car stereo that supports SD card, USB drive and AUX input with many useful features, with expected sound quality.
If I spent a little more on that car stereo could come with A2DP so that I can use phone bluetooth as "FM Transmitter"
I only need it plays music from my key ring USB drive. threw my old Alpine stereo with that FM transmitter away.
This would be great! I could finally kick the ipod to the curb!
really will be useful
goooo....
funny i was just wondering yesterday about getting one of those fm transmitters commonly used for ipods, thinking it might work better than the poor sound i'm currently getting from the head phones i'm using with my leo.
would this be compatible with my TP2?
No you tp2 don't have a (BCM4329)chip so no go

Develop an Air Play app for Android (Stream any audio to any reciever)

For those of you not familiar with Rogue Amoeba they are the developers of a very popular iOS/OS X and now Windows application called Airfoil that is capable of streaming any audio source to any Airplay capable device or any device with their "Airspeaker" app installed on it.
As you can imagine they have had great success with this app. Unfortunately they have no plans to develop a version for android. This was made clear in a post in February located here:
rogueamoeba.com/utm/2012/02/18/sending-any-audio-to-android-devices-via-airplay-with-airfoil/
I also contacted Paul Kafasis (CEO of RA) and his response was the same explaining further that Android actively prevents access to it's audio making it nearly impossible to develop an app for android. I've included our conversation below as well.
ME:
I would like to officially submit my request to have the Airfoil app developed for Android.
With over 300,000,0000 android devices sold worldwide as of February 2012 (over 10 times the amount of iOS devices despite a 16 month head start) and another 850,0000 activated every day the potential here is absolutely enormous.
Please seriously reconsider your decision to not develop for android at this time.
PAUL:
Hi Drew,
It's an interesting idea, but at this time, I'm afraid we have no plans for Airfoil for Android. While Android allows for more access than iOS, it's still nearly impossible to grab another application's audio to send it out. As such, Airfoil for Android is a difficult proposition at best.
Perhaps more likely is an Airfoil Speakers client for Android, enabling you to *receive* audio on Android. We don't have any announced plans for that either, but it's likely what you'd see first, before an Airfoil for Android.
Anyhow, we'll keep our eye on the platform, and see what happens!
ME:
Paul,
Thanks for the quick response. I am not a programmer so I won't pretend to know the complexities involved with grabbing the audio output of the device and redirecting it but I wouldn't think it would be extremely difficult to redirect all audio on the device no different than when you plug in a set of headphones or send your audio over Bluetooth. This is what I believe to be the primary feature of your software. Being able to set each app individually to use airplay as a receiver would be nice but certainly not necessary for initial releases. I would hate to see someone beat you to it since you've done such a great job on your iOS, OS X and Windows applications.
PAUL:
Drew,
You wouldn't think so, no, but it is. Android simply does not make this functionality possible, and actively prevents it.
Anyway,
Where I'm getting with all this is that a lot of people would like to see an app with this capability developed for android. Especially now that a large number of devices (receivers, speakers, etc.) in recent years have started to come with airplay compatibility out of the box. People have been requesting this from Airfoil for over 2 years with no response. I was hoping to get the following answered from someone with an intimate knowledge of the capabilities of android:
1. Is it possible to develop an app that is capable of routing all audio on an android device to an Airplay device?
2. If not possible on a locked device, is it possible on a unlocked/rooted device?
3. Is this something anyone on here would be capable or interested in developing?
Thanks for all the help.
Anyone have any opinion or feedback on this? Is it possible is it not?

I would LOVE to see an app like that! My whole house is wired for airplay with 6 zones and speakers in all ceilings. Iphones can play music in any room. Only app for Android is Honey Player and that is terribly buggy
It would be awesome if it was just possible to send ALL audio like bluetooth A2DP !!!
I just wanted to add my desire for such an app as well. I have airfoil all set up so I can stream from my laptop to my HTPC but it would be awesome if I could do it from my Android phone and tablet.
There must be a developer on here that could do such a thing and I for one would be willing to donate.
The last thing i want is to propagate the Apple jail cell.. they are the only kid on the block that does not want to play with others... and yes, i own an iPad.
I USED to want to get airplay running in my house but i realised that my Samsung Galaxy Note, Blackberry BB9930, Dell PC, HP desktop, HP laptop, Gateway Netbook and Sony TV ALL support DLNA and so i have stopped caring about my iPad and its audio...
A DLNA app for Ios and an itunes plug-in would be the way to get universality here

DLNA is fine for streaming media files from one device to another but it is not capable of streaming media from a streaming service. I.e. streaming Google music or Tune In via airplay to your home stereo. Really the only solution to date is airplay or bluetooth and bluetooth just doesn't have the range. AM I missing some other solution?
iMediaShare has Airplay capabilities, I use it to stream to my AppleTV(s).
iMediaShare is not compatible with Airport Express at the moment...I tool would be willing to pay for an "Airfoil for android" type application the key being that it can send ANY audio source to the Airport Express.
Plus 1!
I am still looking for this! My apple days are over, but I still own 3 Airport Express devices and 1 appleTV.
JB has ability to do USB audio. Are we getting any closer to "airfoil-like" app for android. I too have 4 zones set up in whole house audio, and hate my first gen ipad these days. Whoever makes this app will make some serious money on the market.
Any news regarding this...?
Seriously... this would be a gold mine for the developer. There are so many Airplay speakers out there that would make playing music to your speakers so much easier.
Isn't it possible to root your device and send all sound output directly to an airplay device?
Sincerely
L
Airplay for Android? I think i'll try that!

It may be a bit late now that miracast has been established and is starting to go into devices. It pretty much does the same thing as airplay except a little better. However it's still brand new so there aren't many devices that support it yet.

While I agree that Miracast duplicates some of the features of AirPlay, that doesn't change the fact that many people already have AirPlay devices (eg AirPort Express) and don't want to buy new hardware if/when it's available.
I would love a "Airfoil for Android"-type app.
However, as a workaround, does this sound like something feasible?
1. Connect Android device to PC via Bluetooth.
2. Setup PC as a Bluetooth speaker for the Android device. (Is this possible?)
3. Use Airfoil to route audio: Android > Bluetooth > PC > Airfoil > AirPort Express (I've never used Airfoil, so I don't know if this is possible.)
Just wanted to add my support for something like this. I would gladly pay money for this app. I have a Galaxy S2 skyrocket and a Nexus 7. I would love to be able to use my nexus 7 as an audio receiver and stream music from my phone (Play Music / Pandora / Songza / etc) to it. I realize I could set up these apps on the n7 itself and play directly that way, but the key is having the ability to control the music from my phone. Additionally, my friends who have Android phones and the app should be able to do the same with relative ease.
Currently I have AirFoil on my laptop and Android HiFi installed on my n7 and stream music that way. That is less than ideal. I don't understand why this is so difficult? But then again, I'm not a programmer.

I guess that works. I feel like it's kind of overkill and it sucks that you'd have to daisy-chain using both bluetooth and a laptop/desktop. But in the absence of anything else, we have to make due, right?
Airfoil can't intercept audio from the bluetooth stack server, I've tried.

We all are. It is shocking nothing has come of this.
It is indeed shocking. I'm guessing there's not a lot of work being done because it is too difficult (though I don't quite understand why that is). I am hoping Google blesses us with miracast in the next release.

ASHA

Hi all
can't remember where I 've read that ASHA ( stands for Android Streaming for hearing Aids ) shld be introduced with Pie Release...
Apple Iphone, since IOS 10 streams audio data to yr hearing aids and they heavily advertise that those are "Made for Iphone..."
Android is ( or was...) supposed to do the same in order to publicly announce "Made for Android" !!!
None of the custom roms I've tried ( RR,lightRom,Cosp ) support this "feature" ??
From what I remember, there was a specific protocol associated with BT Low Energy to provide streaming once yr hearing aids were recognized
Any info welcome
Tested Technology (tested.technology.co.uk) has ASHA up and running with LiNX Quattro hearing aids and a Pixel 3a phone updated to Android 10.
There's currently a very limited combination of hearing aids (just GN's I think, and Cochlear) and phones (Goggle's own Pixels and possibly the odd Samsung flagship) that can use ASHA.
LE Audio, the BT SIG Hearing Aid Working Group tells me, is something completely separate. It's intended to be a much wider application of audio over BLE that will roll out this year with BT 5.2. As I understand it, LE Audio and ASHA use different stacks. The two groups haven't even been in discussion. Don't expect any mutual compatibility.
