Recently I've been experiencing a low GPS accuracy in Google Maps (with the app reporting a low accuracy and offering to try to use the camera to improve it). When I'm trying to navigate in my car, often the reported location will be off by 25 feet or more. This results in navigation giving the "you missed your turn" drum sound when I'm actually going the right direction or nuisance reports saying to make a u-turn, etc. It makes me think it might be relying on cellular A-GPS rather than actual GPS. Up until recently the GPS had been excellent on this phone.
Google Location Accuracy: Improve Location Accuracy is enabled.
Location > "Use location" is enabled.
The Maps app has "Use precise location" enabled.
I feel like this might have started after I upgraded to Android 13, but I wasn't paying close attention, so perhaps not.
Anyone else having GPS problems? Is there any other setting that could cause this? Is there an app that can tell me if I'm using A-GPS rather than real GPS?
EDIT: The "GPS Status" app seems to show that the phone is seeing GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellites. Checking inside my car, it claims 9 foot accuracy. Strange.

I've searched and didn't see this brought up. Apologies if this is common knowledge...
In a nutshell, plotting a route AT&T Navigator with AGPS enabled allows the camera's GPS photo function to work correctly.
More details below:
I have NEVER been able to get the GPS photo function of the camera to work. It would always stay on the "Initializing GPS" screen indefinitely, even if I had GPS lock in OCN8 (with AGPS disabled). With AGPS on, I have constant loss of GPS every few seconds with OCN8.
For grins, I decided to take advantage of the 30 day free trial of AT&T Navigator and turn ON AGPS to see if I could duplicate the claims others have that AGPS works well with AT&T Navigator. I've been skeptical of these claims.
What I've observed is if I fire up AT&T Navigator (with AGPS enabled) and have it plot a course, then concurrently run the camera app and select GPS Photo, it works immediately.
If I then shut down AT&T Navigator and go back to the camera app, the GPS Photo function won't work and stays on the INITIALIZING GPS screen.
Although I was highly skeptical that AT&T Navigator would do anything to the GPS, I am now becoming convinced that AT&T Navigator is somehow allowing AGPS to function correctly.
Furthermore, I haven't found it to be enough to simply go past the safety screen in AT&T Navigator as reported by others -- I actually have to plot a course to get it to enable the GPS photo function to work.
Just another GPS datapoint
have you tried google maps with gps enabled instead of messing with trialware? if it works you may just be able to use that instead and itll last forever since google maps is free. i have garmin, it pulls up gps faster than google maps but if you go to another program or if the screen turns off or something, the gps drops out.
I have never been able to figure out what GPS photo was. how does it work?
its basically adding a bit of data that gives longitude and latitude so if you bring the photo into a program like iphoto, it can put a little point on a map saying you took the picture where.
Recently my Google Maps has not been able to lock in on my location closer than 1500 to 1900 meters. I have hard reset and reinstalled GMaps with no luck. I have seen tweaks for Sprint and TMo users and have read that most VZW users are having no problems locking in. Are there any tweaks that I can try for the VZW TP2?
there are numerous gps tweaks to change the cache settings if you search for them. also try using the program quickgps which comes with your phone it will download the closest satellite info. inside my building i cant lock on any sats but outside i can get between 8-9 and within 10 meters of my location
Make sure location is turned on.
If you do the quickgps program on the phone it will turn location on for you and download the closest satelites for you and you should get a lock in like 10 seconds when you are outside.
Unless you turn on location you will just get your general location with google maps, mine said within 2800 meters till I used QuickGPS.
I have duplicated your problem by unchecking the gps option after you open google maps and pressing menu and the down arrow. Make sure the location setting is on as prior post stated and then after you open google maps make sure gps is checked in the menu and it will say that it is searching for satellites.
also make sure you change your gps settings in google to com4 and a baud of 4800
you also have to re-enable the "use gps" after changing this
I was able to dublicate the problem aswell, by accedent >_<, anyway, make sure the location setting for google maps is selected.
confirming what others here are saying, that's pretty much what I experienced with GPS unchecked in the main right softkey menu. If you don't have that checked it's using cell antennas or wifi to approximate your position. "Menu" > "Use GPS" and it should work by default.

Leaving it set to the "Managed by Windows" setting works just fine for me. No issues, and definitely use the Quick GPS program, it saves a headache. In fact im sitting on my couch in my appartment on the bottom of three floors built on the side of a hill with 2 sides of earth, and I have a strong 8 to 9 sats.
I just got my TP2 yesterday and one of the first things I did was install google maps and I was getting result like the title of this thread "within 1800 meters" and it could be a mile off. also the sats were not locking at all. I realized that my position was based on the tower that I was connected to. By the way the google maps on my VX6800 never used the towers to triangulate a position but the gps lock were much slower. Once I ran the quick GPS in the programs menu it turned on the GPS to the right setting and now I get an accurate lock even inside within seconds.
Go to settings-all settings-personal-phone-cdma services-location setting and make sure that it is set to "Location On". If not, you are not actually using the GPS. With that on and with QuickGPS doing it's thing, you will lock instantly.
I have a Verizon TP2 that is two weeks old. It does not have QUICK GPS! Oh yeah, and the gps does not locate.
Do I?
Return it?
Hard Reset? (sounds like a lot of work)
Get the file somewhere?
I have had it twice to Verizon. They have no suggestions but are happy to see the device and get their hands on it.
Leaning towards exchanging it for a new one.

basically the only program i can get to work with my GPS location is google maps and its usually off a few city blocks. no other prgram can even get my location including sprint navigator. is there anything i can do to help fix this problem?
Have you downloaded the satelittes via quick gps? If so did you make sure to enable GPS in the programs? I know for google maps you have to do Menu > Settings > Enable GPS
This might fix all your GPS troubles
I used to have a big problem with my GPS too. I installed the GPS Mod Driver by Mach2003 and now applications like TomTom and Navigon are able to find my GPS far quicker and I have more control over my GPS settings.
How it works is by simply creating a layer between the GPS native driver and the application. This layer, communicates with both the native driver and the application and is pretty robust. It gets the job done better than the native driver could by providing extra options like cell tower triangulation and path guessing.
Try it, it might fix your problem.

This Driver installs between your gps application and the GPSID driver that reads the hardware gps data.
Lag is compensated, by guessing your position 'some number' of milliseconds in the future, current course and speed changes are included in the guess.
It corrects for invalid data in the gps strings, Out of range DOP values, and Heading values of 'NaN' (Not A Number). Position, Speed, and course are reported, even though the distance traveled is less than 30 meters.

I know it might be stupid, but have you enabled the location settings on the phone. If its not enabled googlemaps will use triangulation to get the location within a few hundred to a thousand feet. With location enabled googlemaps will get my position within about 15-20 feet. I would check that then do the other things that are posted above.
My guess is that location setting needs to be changed from 911 only to on
My 2nd day with the TF.
With that said, I don't think I'm fully understanding the GPS functionality on this tablet. When I'm connected via WIFI, on Google Maps it'll show my location pretty accurately.
But right now I'm at work without WIFI and Google Maps is unable to determine my location.
I thought that as long as I have an offline map, I should be able to navigate and pinpoint my location with it's built-in GPS.
Or is it maybe just at the moment it's unable to get a good satellite signal?
You can use "GPS Test" to test your GPS. My TF gets no signal inside my office building either. But it works fine outside.
GPS is generally useless indoors. However, if you go close to a window it will often see enough signal to function. It might still take it a few minutes to lock on to enough satellites to get a fix.
I find the location accuracy with WiFi only quite amazing. It's pertty much as accurate as GPS.
Bye.
If you can't get a clear view of the sats, GPS will not be of much value. The WiFi location is based on a look up where most wifi routers have their coordinates stored in an online database and that is just accessed when wifi is available. If you own the hot spot, you can change the GPS coords. Note you are actually getting the location of the router but that is close enough.
i have an s3 running cyanogenmod 10, and the GPS works better than any other phone i have had, rarely any issues locking on a location. but it seems like after i play with the "fake GPS" app with mock locations turned on, and then turn it off and close the app, my GPS doesn't want to connect for the rest of the day.
i will have my GPS location set with fake GPS because i work inside a building with no GPS reception all day, and at the end of the day I turn it off. i can't get a GPS singnal for the rest of the evening. "GPS Status" app shows around 15 satellites but it won't connect to any of them even if i reboot the phone. by morning, it's working fine.
so, i am wondering if there is something else i need to do after i use mock locations, or if using mock locations hurts the GPS.
thanks for any info.
