Hi all!
I've been searching for a solution for some time but couldn't find any.
Always On Display stopped working on my Pixel 6a. It's all turned on in the settings but it simply doesn't work. It works only in those cases:
1. When device is rebooted into an Airplane mode
2. When device is rebooted into the Safe Mode
3. When device is rebooted but not unlocked for the first time
There are also no notifications displayed so screen wake on notification doesn't work. Same story as above.
I thought there is some app blocking it but couldn't really figure out which, I tried to disable many of them but none helped.
I did a factory reset once but issue came back after few days.
I seriously have no idea what might it be. Hope someone here might have had similar problem and found a solution.
Thanks!

Would you be down to try flashing a custom ROM?
I've read in another thread not long ago someone saying their Tap to Wake randomly stopped working. We narrowed it down to an issue with the proximity sensor (so the phone thought it was in a pocket/covered, therefore didn't let Tap to Wake work, he had to use the power button to turn the screen on). He then flashed a custom ROM (it was LOS, I think), and that solved the issue for him.
I've also had some issues with the stock ROM, flashing a non-factory one solved all of them
If you want to keep on using the factory ROM, you might wanna try using the Android Flash Tool instead of just factory resetting to make sure no corrupted settings can live on.

I would say it does not have anything in common with the proximity sensor since it works fine with airplane mode turned on. I want to stay with the factory ROM. Maybe it's an issue that will be fixed any time soon?

Why do you ask for advice if you just want to "wait for it to get fixed"?
If you've done a factory reset already, it's not a hassle re-flashing the factory ROM (since you already have your data backed up).
Fwiw, the guy with the proximity sensor issue also had it sometimes work and other times not, much like your issue

I'm trying to figure out if it's a software issue in a ROM or some applications impact..

Just recently found that Auto-rotate stopped working on my Inspire. I have checked my settings multiple times and it is checked, but it will not rotate to landscape mode. I have tried it in both the browser and messages and neither one seems to work. I doesn't matter how I hold the phone it stays in portrait mode. I have also restarted and powered down the phone numerous times but to no avail. Glitch or something wrong with the phone? Should I take it back and get a replacement?
mine is doing the same thing. Really annoying when I am trying to show off the pictures, hopefully a fix is coming
I think I'm just gonna take it back to Best Buy and get a replacement since I've already dropped it and scuffed the edge. Plus I have their insurance and buy back program so I shouldn't have any hassles just swapping it out.

A reboot will fix the auto-rotate. This has happened to me a few times, I'm trying to figure out what app caused the lock - I think it might be Tweetdeck or Twidroid.
Shouldn't happen, I know, but a reboot will return it to working mode.
I've had the Inspire for 5 days and have the auto-rotate freeze up twice. Once was in the store when I bought it, and I think we fixed it by killing the Internet app. The second time was two days ago, and I fixed it with a restart. Seems to be a software problem, not hardware sensor problem.
Had the same thing, solved by re-calibrating sensors.
Hi there,
I had the same thing. It drove me nuts, but eventually I found the problem. I am using CM10 and in the System Settings->Advanced->Sensors I noticed that under "Use Calibration File" the small print says that after checking it you HAVE to re-calibrate. Now I don't remember actually checking that check box but I might have, since I was tweaking the device to my liking after that first install of CM10. I re-calibrated and vuala! It now works just fine.
If you are using another ROM it could be in a different menu, but find it and re-calibrate the sensors.
Hope this solves your problem too.

Hi,
I just got this s7 for 3 days and i have this problem where the screen wont turn on but the phone still is active.
A hard boot will fix it but its only a temp fix because i had this problem 4 times now in 3 days.
I didn't root it nor did i install any weird apps outside the google play store, i disabled a couple of bloat ware apps like all microsoft apps and a few google apps like hangouts and gmail.
I did some research and found out that more people have this problem but all the fixes they got it to wipe the cache but the phone still has the problem after that so i would like to know if more people on xda have this problem and i would like to know what they did to their phone so i can see if we have anything in common to pin point the problem.
See if the setting for preventing the phone to turn on in your pocket is enabled. If so, try disabling it and see if that works. It may be a problem with the proximity sensor if it's a hardware issue.
Thanks for the reply and i have that setting indeed turned on! So ill switch if off right now and lets hope this will fix it!
Seems like turning off that feature didn't work
If you have an SD remove it or format it. I had this on kitkat because of too many files in internal memory
Think i found the problem because i think its fixed. While restoring my old settings like wifi etc from my ggole account caused this problem and now that i skipped this part in the setup the phone seems to be working now for 2 days perfectly but thanks for the reply and help.
Woot, I have fixed the problem!!!!! Its the App Power Saving Feature that causes this!!! I had some app set to "always" and when i used any of these app and then put the phone in standby then it would lock up every now and then. Now that i have turned off this setting the phone runs steady for a week!

Is your phone still working fine without blackscreens?
I've got the same issue (sometimes 4 times in an hour, sometimes it doesn't happen for 2 days..!!).
I've tried fixing by doing a factory reset and turning app power saving mode off.
Unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Yesterday I got an unresponsive blackscreen again :crying:
Any ideas what could fix the problem?
(Ignore my signature, I'm writing about the S7, not the S6)

Hi
Has anybody a bug like mentioned above?
My FRD-L09 with the latest fw b131 has that bug. After rebooting it works as usual but after some time it stops rotating the Screen.
The Rotation is enabled in the Settings. Tested with many apps like google fotos, the stock foto gallery, even chrome does not auto rotate.
As is said, after a reboot it works again.
Try wiping the Cache Partition in the Recovery Mode menu. If that doesn't work then backup the data on your device and perform a hard factory reset on your device.

Is the issue gone for once as you rebooted?!
Yes, as i stated above
Good
I have the same issue, after some time the rotation is not working anymore. A restart fixes that temporary, but it is getting annoying

It has happened to me twice in 2 days. Not sure if it was camera related, but that's when I noticed it because the pics I took in landscape were rotated 90 degrees in the gallery, and nothing auto-rotates after that. So rebooting fixes it.

A hard factory reset solved the problem for me, at least I did not get this issue again since 3 days.
But I think it has something to do with "smart assistance", this is the only setting that is deactivated since I've made the reset.
So try to turn things off there and maybe I am right, if not do a hard reset (Do not forget to backup your data !!)
Have the same annoying bug on my Honor Note 8, must be something to do with Huawei's power management cause it seems to happen when battery goes below 10%. Restart seems to fix it every time
Hello,
I have the same bug on my Honor 8.
Does someone found a solution ? it's very annoying
Thanks!

You are my personal hero, PreDer!
I only deacticated all options in "smart assisstence" settings. Only Smart Key is activated. I did a partition cache wipe afterwards (no factory reset!) and now everything is working perfectly for last couple of days!

Hi, any update?
Same issue here, but today It reactivated the function by itself as it stopped working with gallery and google photo uploading.
I had anyway some movement options active in smart assistance, which I now have deactivated leaving only the smart cover option.
It is still working perfectly for me with only smart key activated in settings. No issues anymore so far...
Ok thanks, looks like mine too is working again.
Something like the error message of "Google....etc etc...impossible recording" whenever the microphone was used by an app, even taking movies. I then discovered that I had to deactivate the "Ok Google on every screen" option.
By the way, even if I wanted to wait for a massive test of the B380 upgrade, I found that my Honor 8 had downloaded automatically the upgrade, prompting me to reboot to install it, when I left it connected to my home wifi.
I can't find anyway to force it not to download system upgrades by itself, I have a very bad experience from iPad of unnecessary upgrades, is there a way to take control manually of system upgrades?
Actually I haven't seen any battery improvement after the upgrade to B380...
I have the same issue. I can confirm that the reboot fixed the problem. Will see how long befoe this bug comes back.

Rebooting fixes until smart assistance critical option forces the problem to come back. It might be a conflict with some particular app, but deactivating most of the smart options one at a time to see which one is the guilty will solve the issue.
Unfortunatly, reboot fixes the bug for me for only 5 or 6 days :/

As multiple times stated, rebooting is USELESS if you don't deactivate the smart option that fights with some of the apps!

Same issue wirh FRD-L09. It's very annoyng problem. Any news to fix it?
Hard reset solves only for one day
Thanks
Has anyone experienced your U11+ freezing up.
It has happened to me about 3 times.
It generally happens over night while it's charging. I get up one of those mornings and the green light is on, remove the charging cable and I can't wake up the phone. I can't even turn off the phone by pressing and holding the power button to kill the device. The only way is to put it into download mode by simultaneously holding down the vol down key and power key, and then when the menu comes up to select the reboot option to get the phone back to normal.
Has anyone else experienced this or know what could be causing this to happen?
The problem is that I use my phone as my alarm clock, and when it freezes up, my alarm doesn't work.
Any suggestions anyone?
No problem like that until now.
However, noticed sometimes that the my alarm, which is setup for vibration only, only vibrates once and then continues silently alarming until I turn it off.
Happens randomly but still strange. I've to try with another clock app.
That's really odd.
I'm going to turn off the always - on feature and see if I get anymore freezes. I had another one this afternoon.
I'll report back after some time and let you know if there has been no more freezes.
I'm just updating to the latest update 1.23.709.3 and see also how it performs.
I'm a bit concerned about this random freezing that I have experienced since I got this device.
If it persists I may ask for a new one.

I'm still on the October security patch so I'm expecting one for the December period soon I hope.
In regards to your freezes I've not encountered anything like that so far been working flawlessly so far if there is anything I can test let me know
I have the Taiwan version.
If you could try the always-on feature for a couple of days and nights and report back, that would be awesome. However, I selected the option, for always-on to only come on when I moved the phone. (good for night time use especially)
I had my phone in the pocket yesterday afternoon and it froze.
As I stated earlier, I can only restart the phone only by putting it into download mode and reboot from there.

Thanks for letting me know.
I guess I can rule that feature out as a probable cause.
It must be some other app that's causing this issue. But it's a pain to go through the process of finding out which one.

Yeah trial and error isn't fun. I'd probably factory reset though and see if it happens with barely any third party apps installed.

I have the HK model I think and I had the AOD when I first got it, set to motion and nothing has happened to my phone in regards to freezing fingers crossed. I have disabled it for the moment as I noticed a greater battery usage overall, I believe between 9-10% overnight and only 2% when I had it disabled.
Hopefully you find the problem otherwise see if you can get it replaced...
Since not using the always-on feature, I don't have any more freezes. Must be some conflict with the alarms and always-on. Can't see what else could be causing those freeze ups.
My phone surprisingly just froze up yesterday. But at least it's been a long while since not having the always-on feature enabled. With always-on enabled, it seems to have happened every day.
The issue I have most about this, is missing that important call when I haven't realised that the phone is frozen, because sometimes I don't pick up the phone for hours.
I had to do a complete fresh install from scratch and I have no more issues. I believe all my issues came from using HTC's transfer tool when going from u11 to u11+. Importing all the settings features using the Transfer Tool has caused issues. I'll never use this tool again.
All good now.
Hi all,
Pixel 1 after one of the latest updates turned into almost unusable piece of junk ;/
I do not know if this is OTA update issue or hardware fault, but phone must be restarted frequently, otherwise is almost impossible to make phone call - phone is laggy, screen doesn't respond properly, sometimes must hold power button for several seconds to force reboot, as it is not possible to reboot using the screen.
After reboot seems to work fine until someone is calling - when I answer, the caller cannot hear me and I must restart the phone again to make another try. Sometimes it work and I can talk over the phone, but mostly don't.
Phone never been rooted or anything, always updated with the latest OTA software.
I did factory reset - no change ;/
Is there anything I could try? I was thinking to try to go back to older software, but I'm not sure if this is software issue, as didn't found any other posts on this forum describing similar problems.
It is unusable anyway, so I will try anyhing.

Ive updated to latest ota on pixel 1 and had no problems so far. You could check the dialer app is set as default dialer and all permissions are granted and maybe clear the apps storage/cache, force stop it and re open it and see if that solves anything? Could also check background apps and running services in developing options to see if an app is banging out the memory causing it to lag?

if you already did factory reset then it must be a sign of motherboard is dying soon or bad nand chip. motherboard failing on pixel is very common but it happens to less than 1% of people. there are plent of threads on reddit/xda on this.
What's the status of your Pixel? Is the bootloader unlocked? Rooted? Did you have any such problems on the December udpate?
As mentioned - I did factory reset as I thought it may help cure the problems, but it didn't.
I have never unlocked bootloder and phone is not rooted. All standard here.
I have the latest update installed and same problems persist ;/
I'll try another factory reset today.
