MediaProvider module | Android Open Source Project
source.android.com
The Android Media Provider is responsible for scanning the device's internal storage and external storage (such as an SD card) for media files. It then indexes those files and makes them available for other apps to access via the MediaStore API. The indexed files include audio, images and video files. It also provides functionality such as thumbnails generation, metadata extraction, and cloud uploads.

Local/online storage?

Is it possible to create an app or a mod or something that will make the phone recognise online storage as local storage?
As in, I have comic, music and photo files I would like to view on my phone, but apps such as HTC music and other third party apps only see local files on the SD card. Is there something i can do to make apps believe my online storage such as dropbox is local so i can essentially "stream" or view them as if they were on my SD card? I know ES file browser can access my dropbox, but can i get this idea implemented system-wide?
I hope you guys know what i'm talking about/asking.
Thanks!

Hmm I'm sure you can stream music/ look at photos/ watch videos etc. on the official Dropbox app itself?
If you get a HTC Sense 4.0 ROM (ViperS etc.) you can go to the gallery and select Dropbox, Skydrive and so on, in the drop down menu where it says "Albums".
I think not - because it needs constant internet connection and two (online/local) will not work well together.
Thanks for your replies.

[Q] [WM8] What is it capable of?

Won't let me post it in the WM forums so I'll ask here. I've been using Android for the past 2 years but I'm considering a switch to Windows Mobile (8), mainly out of curiosity. However, before I do so, I want to make sure it's capable of all the stuff I could easily do on my Android device.
So, let's get to it. Is WM8 capable of:
- File managing? Downloading a .rar or .zip archive, extracting it's contents and opening them (be it music, documents, videos, anything)? Also, browsing ALL the files on the phone, not just the known formats or visible ones?
- File transfer between devices? Simply taking a picture or any type of file and sending it via Bluetooth, as well as receiving it?
- Media playback? I'm assuming it can play MP3s, WMVs and AVIs, how about some less usual stuff like MKVs or FLAC files?
- YouTube? Is there a dedicated app or is it just viewing via browser?
Some minor questions include:
- How's file transfer between PC and Phone? Can it be done via explorer like an USB device or do you need to do the SkyDive and Zune player transfers to get stuff on your phone?
- Does it have some minor apps, "Accessories" you could call them, such as Calculator, Calendar, Sound record, etc ?
- Is there anything else you'd tell and Android user transfering to Windows Phone?

random files missing

Hello guys..... I think my files (mostly video and audio files) are missing randomly......
For video files sometimes it shows 'cant play file' in mx player. When i try to copy that video file to computer it shows ' media pool empty'. And the file will be having 0 kb in size.
Some of the Audio files are missing....not like the case of above mentioned video files...... Its completely missing....not even a trace of files.... anybody experiencing the same?? Any help will be greatful....

Files don't just "disappear"... either something deleted them, the media database is out of sync, or you have a storage problem.
Storage is the most common one... Do you have as SD card installed? Is it setup as adopted (internal) storage or portable (external) storage? Adopted storage is problematic at best in this devices, and the devices are pretty inconsistently finicky with SD cards, one device will work great with Sandisk cards and the next will cause the card to fail in days. To be honest, even Moto support personnel suggest never using adopted storage and to maintain online backups of media with apps like Google Photo (always good idea, even on devices that don't have storage problems). If these are just on internal storage of the device and you don't have an SD card, well, it is entirely possible that the internal storage chip is going bad, which is not replaceable or repairable... so yeah, there is that. TBH, a storage issue is the most likely cause.
Media database is out of sync... No way to tell for sure, but you can rebuild the database by going to Settings - Apps and tapping the 3 dot overflow menu and selecting Show System, then find Media Storage and External Storage apps and open them, then select Storage, and Clear Data on both, then reboot and let the device sit for a minimum of 5-10 minutes without using it after it is fully booted so the databases can rebuild automatically (if you have an adb connection monitoring the logcat, you can see when it finishes, but most likely you don't so just be patient). Then see if they "reappear" and are playable (meaning the databases were out of sync), or the icons are just gone now (meaning the files were deleted but the database hadn't caught up yet).
Something deleted them... Not sure how to troubleshoot this one, could have a rogue app or spyware, but that is EXTREMELY rare, much more uncommon than people believe.

Choose location of private folder (Internal/SDcard)

Hello,
First of, I have been using MX Player Pro on all my phones since since release. I love the gesture controls, and am annoyed whenever an app forces me to use their inferior built-in video player
I was happy for the built in private folder, removing the need for an extra 3rd party locker app.
However the current implementation of the private folder seems to store all of the data in the internal storage. This is inconvenient, as I am using a Motorola g8 power with a very limited internal 64 GB memory, with an external SD card of 256 GB.
While in theory android allows for using the SD card as internal storage, this option is disabled on most phones because it can make the phone slower.
Similarily, my phone did not allow me to move the data of the app to the SDcard. (Not 100% sure, it might be that this just didn't increase the leftover space in the internal storage).
I would love to have a setting in the menu to store the data of the private on the SD card.
I totally second that. MxPlayer saves in root of Internal Memory in \MxPlayerPro\.private
Since all are videos, encrypted, they will take a lot of space, quickly filling the internal memory.
I have a Note 20 Ultra with 128gb, and my private folder is 60Gb of it
I tried just moving the folder to the SDCard in case that MX player would read it from there, but didnt work.

Question Anyone have the preloaded movies/photos/music that shipped with the phone?

Due to some software irregularities that occurred after upgrading to Android 12, I was forced to factory reset my device. However, I ended up losing the sample media files that Sony shipped with the device. There were a few videos and photos in addition to two music tracks. I believe one of the songs was designed for the 360 audio feature. I like to preserve pre-installed content on smartphones, and I'd greatly appreciate if someone who still has the files could upload them.
Here are 8 images, 2 videos and 2 music files: Yandex Disk link
