Gorilla Glass 5 gets smooshed if pressed with fingernail, multiple scratches after 2 months. woohoo - General Questions and Answers

i saw a thread on here from 2016 alledging similar claims. was wondering if someone can confirm for me that GG5 is trully no better than a plastic screen, or if possibly the manufacturer is cutting corners on phones. I recently got a Oneplus 9 for modding. I love the phone. After 2 months tho the screen scratched and SMOOSHED. Due to the nature of the damage i cannot get a picture to show it, but it looks like when you write on paper and then turn the page to see the indented letters that were written on the page before it. Yes, but its not paper, its gorilla glass 5, or atleast its supposed to be. Out of curiosity from what i was seeing i decided to push on the screen with my fingernail no harder than you might while popping a zit perhaps not even that hard, having trouble thinking of a better analogy, and i got a similar smoosh dent mark on the screen, only difference is that it does not extend as far across the face of the screen.
I called oneplus and now im thinking they will waste my time and money again by replacing the screen with the same exact garbage, as i am starting to suspect that this is real gorilla glass 5, not a fake as was my initial suspicion, and i would be better off buying a gorilla glass 3 screen for it like my 4 year old moto g7 plus has, and still does not have any noticeable damge on the screen whatsoever.
so i ask if anyone has some words of wisdom. Have you had GG5 before? Is this really the product that Corning decided was ready for the world? Or is this a cheap fake. Phone was purchased new on ebay.
Thanks everyone for your time.
Ugh

Gorilla Glass 5 ( launched in 2016 ) is heavily outdated: nowadays state of the art is Gorilla Glass Victus 2 ( launched in 2022 ).

One X Glass Quality

As an early adopter, I know better than to complain about software issues at launch. That being said, I have my doubts about the quality of the glass in front of this beautiful screen.
I previously owned a Motorola Atrix 4G, which took moderate abuse in the year I owned it for. In that time span, without a screen protector, the screen sustained minimal scratches and were only visible in the right, particularly outdoors in sunlight.
This device, I have owned for about two weeks now, and it has two significant gouges; one at the top where the glass meets the body of the phone, and one at the bottom, not on the screen itself but its significant enough to feel a 'bump' if you run your fingernail over it. Big disappointment coming from the Atrix that never had a scratch you could feel. In daylight, depending on the viewing angle, is covered with dozens of small thin scratches. They don't impact viewing quality of the screen, but simply seeing how much damage the screen has sustained in the first two weeks makes me question how it will be in a year.
I plan on trying the Skinomi screen protectors that claim to 'heal' scratches, the big gouges I can live with but I was wondering if others have noticed this screen seems to be less scratch-resistant than other smartphones?
Mine already has a scratch that can be felt with a fingernail. My Captivate that never had a screen protector is in better shape. Maybe there's an issue here...
My atrix has been abused and screen still looks new with no screen protector. It is now my 20 month old daughters device to watch Disney videos on and the screen is still perfect. The body on the other hand is scratched to hell.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Are you setting your phones screen down or is this just happening under normal usage?
My Atrix held up fairly well to scratches. I dropped it on concrete a few days before I sold it. The drop resulted in some pretty good scratching.
Had my One X for 3 weeks and I don't think there's a single scratch. Plus it seems to resist fingerprints much better than the trix.
Really, who gives a crap? Go outside, touch a breast, fart in public. Live life. It's just a phone.
I wonder if there aren't issues with Gorilla Glass 2 since it is so new. This is the first production device that uses Gorilla Glass 2.

There's an article somewhere (gizmodo or engadget) of a Chinese video of the HTC employee stress testing the screen of the one x. He uses the screen as a hammer and pounds nails into a wood block. Not a scratch or crack. Go check it out.
Also its just a phone. Of the glass breaks its replaceable. The ttime you spend inside isn't.

minor scatch already - but new glass coming
After 2 years with the Captivate (no screen protector - I love the feel of the naked gorilla glass) I was hoping to keep up the good luck. no scratches on my Cappy!!!
Well, I am the proud owner of a gray HOX. I recently had an unfortunate accident (some kid tried to swipe/snatch the phone from my hand and it went flying and skidding on the glass for about 5 feet!!!) and I have a tiny scratch near the bottom toolbar - but I haven't been bothered at all in everyday use, just that first scratch disappoinment!
Ordered a new one for $37 and its on its way. Now I actually plan to wait to replace and use the ever so slightly marred one until I get a few scratches.
We replace an old Iphone glass last year and the replacement made the phone feel brand new again.
Needless to say, my son took off his screen protector on his phone after he found out the cost was insignificant to replace. He prefers the glass and I don't blame him!
The One X has a beautiful screen and glass, it's a shame to cover it with a protector that will get nicked up anyway.
Gorilla Glass is overrated.
Yesterday, I dropped mine completely naked from waist height, watching it flutter to ground in slow-motion like a John Woo flick, landing on the corner of the glass on the sidewalk, and it only has the slightest of scratches on the bezel, completely invisible unless really focused upon. At the time I stared at it, face down on the ground, thinking, "Well, there goes that." Completely expected it to be shattered. Turned it over and couldn't believe it.
So either I got a lucky bounce or it's decently durable.
Case arrived today. Because that's how the universe rolls.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is interested in finding out where you ordered it from and how difficult it is to replace. Please share?
If you were so concerned about scratches on your screen why didn't you install a protector in the first place?

I don't put anything over the display. But I do get a case to protect the device. Without doubt my devices would all get damaged and marked if they fell without a case protecting them.

Replacing digitizer...still gorilla glass?

I scratched up my screen (its really a small scratch but annoys me that its there), so now I plan on replacing it.
I've replace digitizers for friends phones before but the one thing I never thought about is whether or not these replacement, remanufactured digitizers are made using same gorilla glass that the original ones are made of. I'm sure they aren't OEM even though most of them say they are.
I would hate to replace my outside glass for one less durable because of one annoying blemish.
I have my eyes on this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-HTC-Sen...ultDomain_0&hash=item35b3232346#ht_3860wt_952
Does anyone have a replaced digitizer and have any complaints about their screen scratching up easily?

I bought a day one Sensation I've Dropped it from a 8foot Ladder.. screen never Scratched or Broken.. I had to get it Replaced because Dust got behind the Screen and now I phoned phone from about a foot off ground and it cracked.. I think they are even using normal glass again.. BS... Stick with Gorilla Glass
That really doesn't mean anything to be fair, drops are a crap shoot, there are about a million different ways a phone can hit the deck. Some survivable, some not, regardless of height.
its all the same, more or less.
No two panels will be the same, even if their both from HTC. Some might have undetectable imperfections that could have a nice place for a break to start.
I was somewhat unlucky with my first digitizer. It might have had an imperfection along the edge that allowed it to break
Real HTC glass: 3 foot drop - broken
Glass from amazon: 6 foot drop - still working
Anyone know a good site to purchase a glass replacement. I found on Amazon but it was shipping from Hong Kong, dont want to wait 3-4 weeks to find out its cheap glass.

Screen protectors

Hey guys
I'm a new owner of a new Razr I and I want to share with you that BestSkinsEver is making a skin for the Razr M, wich has exactly the same dimension as our beloved Razr I...
I've used the screen and body skins for my Galaxy Nexus and I can assure that it's awesome... The best screen protector I've used... much better than dry applied ones...
http://www.bestskinsever.com/motorola-droid-razr-m-skin
I'm just waiting for them to star selling :good:
Are you using any screen protectors at the moment?
I'm using the atfoliX FX-Clear screen protection. It's great to apply, you can re-use it by washing it. Not a single air bubble at the main screen.
Best part is: After i asked for it, they now also produce a smaller film for the glossy area at the back of the phone! I think it's the only manufacturer that offers it, it now comes with the normal films. I think it's based on silicone or something, at least it's not that ordinary "try to apply without air inclusions beneath it".
I can recommend it 100%, as Gorilla Glas does not seem to be as scratch-resistant as advertised (take the Asus Padfone; from inserting it into it's station many users have scratches). 100% invisible except the cut-out at the front cam.
It's a german manufacturer so i don't now if you can get it outside of germany. Some protections are sold outside germany, but not for every single device. Price is okay as it is 3 films for 5€.

I think Motorola make great phones only thing is that they 'divide' themself from others. They never sell worldwide and always depend on ONE stupid provider: Verizon. Thats why Motorola will never be popular and their brand will soon be forgotten...

Because you better protect the display.
Protect it from what? ... your fingers?
Then why bother buying a phone with gorilla glass?
I agree ... if you go with your phone in a hostile environment then yes, you have to protect it (like .. tracking while mountain biking). But in normal daily usage, the phone (any phone) feels just great in the original form.
As already mentioned, have a look at the Asus Padfone. It uses Gorilla Glas, too, under specific circumstances scratches may occour anyway.
http://www.amazon.de/atFoliX-Displa...0XGO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357078998&sr=8-1
Just watch the pictures and tell me if you see any difference apart from the front cam cutout. I can tell you that you won't notice any difference, no one noticed the protection and IF i accidently put keys into the same pocket as my phone (won't happen as i have a case, too) at least the display won't get scratches. Probably the protection will, so just throw it away and apply the next one. You receive 3 when buying it for 4,50€. I don't get paid for writing this, but it's not like this was a big amout of money.
The gorilla glas can and will get scratches, too, but not as fast as normal glas.

quote everything!
The gorilla glass CAN get scratches. Your phone will NOT get scratched in "normal daily usage" - swiping and touching it with your fingers, car keys bumping with your phone, etc. As for the ASUS Padfone, it gets easily scratched as there are no borders to protect it. Also, I believe it is due to other issues like when they insert it on the tablet.
I own an S3 and it is gorilla glass 2 but got some scratches when it fell and slid on the floor (tiles). This is because there are no borders around the screen of the S3 so the gorilla glass takes all the beating.
That's what I said. If you intend to beat-up your phone, then you better put a rugged skin and a thick screen protector. Otherwise, just use it. I do not intend to "protect" it from accidental miss-usage sacrificing the beauty of the device for this. Accidents will always occur ... you have to accept this. And your phone might get a cracked screen even with a screen protector on it (if dropped in the unlucky position, on the corner). So .. why bother?
I have been using mine without a screen protector, and it now has a few tiny scratches.
I think this whole 'gorilla glass' thing is just a marketing gimmick.. I've had XDAs many (many, many) years ago without screen protectors that went through far worse than what this phone has had to go through, and they were fine.
One has to understand the fact the gorilla glass is a reinforced glass ... but still a glass. And a sand particle you catch in your pocket will likely scratch the gorilla glass ... it is a simple matter of material hardness.

I've been using atFolix FX-Clear Film for Razr I and I'm really happy with it.
Doesn't grease at all (but I make sure I don't have greasy hands before using my phone).
I don't know if it actually works as well as they claim it does but this Rhino Shield seems like a seriously impressive product...

They don't currently make one for the Razr I but I've spoken to them and they say they would probably produce one if they were to receive 100 orders.
What is the likelihood of that do you think? Anyone interested?

I´m also using atFolix FX-Clear. It fits realy perfect on Razr i. Easy to apply with no air bubbles.
But after now 6 months of use i think the "grease protection" is gone away...
I need more time for cleaning of the phone than before and its hard to remove the grease
a friend has a rough screen-protection (not cristal clear) this realy take no fingerprints.
this rough screen-protection i will try next time.
apply a screen-protection is the first thing i do after unpacking a new phone!
There is nothing worse than a scratch on the (real) display! -> great value loss when selling
My Razr I from Three came with one applied ... it's not the cloudy film they normally put on new phones either. Either way, saved me a few quid trying to find one.

Screen cracks easily?

Over on another (swedish) forum we're seeing some rather disturbing reports of screens cracking for seemingly no reason.
Some have reported cracks after simply placing their phone on a table, others by just having it in their pocket.
Do we have XDA member with similar experiences?
Given the number of times it has dropped from the table because it's so rediculously slippery, to no ill effect on the glass, it doesn't seem too bad. I might have been lucky, though.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
It doesn't crack easily, but it seems to happen yeah.
I know this was an issue with the Z2 as well (know 1 or 2 ppl suffering from it) and hope it's not a wide-spread one with the Z3. The fact that it performs as some hoovercraft thingie floating over flat services is kinda annoying though, fell a few times here as well already but luckily no damage so far.
phones have glass screens. Glass screens break on some occasions. Water is wet.
add every report you can find and what do we get? 20? lets make it 100. Of 100 000 phones sold (which is serious lowballing) that is 0.1%.
so even if it seems bad it's not really an issue
As long as iitgets repaired by Sony you mean....
of course, like on the z2.
i think a lot of people are just careless.. i mean who buys this type of phone and already in less than 2 days of owning it, they managed to cracked the screen by dropping it or sitting on it while in their pocket. sh*t happens but if people were more careful i doubt we'd be seeing all these 'broken screen' threads.
IMO the z2 was one of the most sturdy glass screen phones ever, this z2 drop test is pretty amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BGQtfDZNt4
so unless something in the glass was changed between the two versions i don't see how the z3 can be any worse than the z2.
Well I accidentally tested the sturdiness of the phone when I pulled my jacket up and forgot that phone was on top of it. Well nice 1,5m fall with some momentum and not a single scratch. Phew.
Its Gorilla Glass 3, so I don't think it should be any weaker or stronger than other Gorilla Glass 3 phones out there. Any quality issues is probably Corning's fault.
Update: according to Sony they use both Gorrila glass 3 and Dragontrail glass. I have heard Dragontrail is slightly less scratch resistant but thats about it.

On the contrary, Dragontail is harder than GG3...... resists scratches more - but at the detriment to viewing angle quality which is why DT is on the back.
I didnt't notice ANY scratch resistance of the glass backplane. Just use it carefully for a few days - enjoy a nice collection of scratches to stay. Deeply disappointing.
Agreed, seems no matter how careful I am it'll just pick up tiny scratches on the back..seemingly from little specs of dust..I don't understand.

Wow, you guys are scaring me.
I think the cracked screen problem is not from dropping it, or sitting on it. It's that the screen cracks by itself even when just sitting on a table somewhere. People are blaming the temperature difference between a hot phone and a cool surface for stressing the glass and cracking it.
I dunno, I'm in no hurry to upgrade just yet, we'll see.

I posted some pics in another thread here. Hoping it's just a fault with the device

BBC Watchdog did a story on this for the Z1, now there are new complaints coming in about similar issues on the Z3.
BBC Watchdog link for Z1:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/3...peria-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony-responds/
I chose this phone over the M8 due to the Camera, I kept insureance for the Z3 with T-Mobile just in case I get this issue when my phone arrives. Depending on how things turn out with more and more people complaining, I might just have to get the M8.
HTC gives free one time cracked/damaged screen replacement within 6 months in US as part of HTC Advantage. Sony should do the same, especially with their screen issues.
There are theories about uneven expansion of surfaces under heat stress causing cracks due to the way the glass is glued.
I have not experienced the cracking issue but I did notice a scratch on the glass on the back of the phone not even a week after getting it. It's not too bad, and not even really visible in direct light, but you bet I slapped a case on that thing as fast as I could.

I'm sure its a minority getting this issue but still seems to be a lot more than other manufacturers which is alarming. I made my dad get the HTC M8 over the iPhone 6 just for HTCs' Advantage program of one time free screen replacement.
I'm so glad I bought the white version because I can barely see the scratches on the back! It used to drive me crazy on my old black Z1 :silly:

How many of you with scratches on screen?

Hi people!
For those without screen protection, how many of you with scratches on screen of the S7 flat?
No scratches on my S7
No scratches on my S5 with not even a case for almost 2 years
its not bout scratches its bout how well you take care of your phone because it comes with gorilla glass 4 so it shgould last if you take care of it.
Gorilla Glass 4 my ass. I baby my phones and have never scratched a screen until this one. Super disappointed with GG4 or Samsung's implementation...
I also take care of my phones VERY much, and can see some scratches visible on sunlight after 3 months. I never put my phone with something that can scratch it. But then again, I saw those little scratches on every phone I had. Good thing about older phones is that it wasn't so freaking hard to find a screen protector

When U live in Serbia, ordering things is a pain in the.. Neck
I have a friend that works in a larger phone accessory shop here, and he said that none of the protectors they have are full screen or that they always have bubbles.
Have U tried any? Maybe a suggestion so I know which protectors are good for ordering online.
I have a galaxy alpha with gorilla glass 4, and also have the small scratches.
These small scratches come from sand, dirt, dust that is harder than the screen and rubs against your phone in your pocket, these small scratches are unavoidable without screenprotector.
But these are small so they don't bother me, what worries me more is the back glass which is not GG4 and scratches more easy.
Hi everyone.
I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S7 SM-G930W8 Exynos edition since release date. One day around month 3 I was removing the phone from my otter box case and with the littlest bit of flexing the back glass cracked horribly. I found this to be very annoying since this is supposed to be a "prime" quality phone with gorilla glass 4. I think it was more like gurly glass 4 as I bearly flexed the phone at all and am a very caring / gentle phone user and have owned many and never cracked a case/screen ever. My question is has anyone had broken glass, front or back replaced under samsungs warranty or am I crap outta luck? I called Samsung once and they said it's not covered. Since it was not outside of proper use I feel I was fed a line. Any help or suggestions? Very dissapointed in gorilla glass 4,and Samsung for placing it all over all sides of the gs7 in a very thin manner.
Makes me rethink if I'll ever purchase another Samsung again.
Discouraged and disappointed!

Hard or rigid protectors can't cover the whole screen because the edge has a bevel. I got an anti-glare matte screen protector and it works great

Thanks for the tip!
But I don't really want a rigid protector, I mean, i have been using plastic film protectors on all my phones, because I'm very gentle with them and just want to keep them from small pocket scratches. I just need a full screen one that will go over those 2.5d edges of the glass. I also don't like those matte protectors, they totally mess up the screen quality
I had 3 years SG S4 and only one little scratch. After 3 days having S7 I have already weird "graze" (is it correct word in English?) . Is not visible when screen is clean but dirt always stay in the same place. I'm VERY disappointed. Also afraid about home button made of plastic !
My first S7 edge had a super Deep scratch right on the screen curve, stay that for awhile before it turn in a crack going across the screen.

I bought a Fosmon screen protector for both mine and my wife's S7s and they fit really well. If you apply them correctly then you won't have any bubbles. I never use the guides or anything to put it on, I just go slowly and use a credit card to smooth out bumps. Cleaning your phone screen first with alcohol and a lint free wipe cuts down on anything left on the screen to cause bubbles.

Well those back panels can be bought for like 13 bucks and can be easy to replace but you will lose the waterproof tho.

That is not at all what I was asking. My question was has anybody had this issue and had it replaced under warranty? If so what did the process entail and what was said to get it done. I appreciate your comment as to boost your standings in the forums but if your info is not some of actual help you might wanna say nothing at all and let someone else answer the issue.

Since you went hostile... You might wanna to stop being a **** and start your own thread, for your own issue, instead of hijacking this thread. You broke your phone and that isn't a warranty issue, which Samsung already explained to you. He offered you info the help you quickly & easily fix your phone for very little $.
As for screen scratches on my S7, I don't have any so far. No screen protector either. I guess it's probably nerdy, but I carry my phone in a Nite-Ize holster, on my belt, and never in my pocket. So far, I've never scratched a screen on any of my phones since the OG Droid. I had a screen protector on my OG Droid, for a few months, but that's been the only one I've used.

What's your problem? Maybe you should just STFU then if you get mad bout people helping your dumb ass. You break your own phone and come in hete crying bout warranty while this treath is about scratches on the screen. So next time calm down or dont reply
Personally if your just using it day to day you wont see any scratches on your phone especially since the Galaxy S7 has gorilla glass 4. I would recommend a screen protector or even a glass screen protector if you are the type of person who chucks around their phone and doesn't really care about it.
You should be fine using it without a screen protector
