Hello,
I have a TC55 from Motorola Solutions (i.e. the enterprise division that does not belong to Google). It is a rugged phone with a big battery (4400 mAh), but certainly not the sleekest design. Not sure if there is much interest in this kind of device, and I am certainly no developer - but in case anyone is investigating the TC55, here are two things I found so far:
It does not come with any Google apps: no Maps, no Gmail, no Play store and so on.
It is easily rooted with Framaroot using the Gandalf exploit.
(I cannot post this info into the Framaroot thread due to my low post count).
Anyway, maybe this helps someone. I will be happy to try to answer any questions about the TC55, but keep in mind I am no pro and I am not keen in messing around in its internals much more than I have done already.

I heard my company is planning to go with these soon for entry level supervisors such as myself. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is. All the specs and brochures from Motorola keep calling it a mobile computer in a smartphone "form factor" but never actually call it a phone. I didn't see anything in any of the specs to lead me to believe for sure that it was a phone or if it was just an Android computer in a smartphone form factor.
Anyway, I just wanted to confirm, that, you're certain this is a phone, correct?

Yes, definitely. You can call and get called, and you can send and receive SMS. It also supports wired headsets, and it is supposed to work with Bluetooth headsets, though I do not have any to test.

Thanks for the info but it looks like mine is going to be crippled.
Sort of a let-down really. Yes, it "can" be a phone. Or without a sim card it can be a really powerful Android based mobile computer. That's what it is going to be for most of us. Only a few supervisors with area management approval are going to get units with the phone features working. Still cool. Just not as cool as I'd thought it was going to be.

I see, sorry to hear that. It sounds weird to me to do that, but then again I have no clue about this type of work.
Maybe the crippling could be worked around or undone by people with good Android knowledge - but I suppose it might not be the best idea to go against company policy.

I don't think they're doing anything all that special to cripple it. They just won't all have sim cards or a cell plan. Pretty much as simple as that.
I won't be doing anything to circumvent that though or rooting it or anything like that. It's not like it's a gift and it belongs to me or anything. After almost 22 years, I've kind of grown to like my job and getting a paycheck every two weeks.I'd kind of like to keep it for another 15 or 20 years. Who knows, maybe my manager will decide that I need cell service with mine.
I work for a large automaker in the U.S. We have over 2.8 million square feet under roof. Personally, I can be anywhere on in the plant, on the roof, in pits & sub-basements underneath or anywhere on or near the 50 acre plant site at any given time. A lot of what I need to do on a daily basis is through our intranet portal. They're putting in something like 500 new wi-fi repeaters/extenders all around the plant as well. They're purchasing these for over 300 first line supervisors at my site alone. I'm pretty sure they're doing this corporate-wide so I hate to think what they're spending on these things as a corporation. I'm sure it would bankrupt many small nations! In addition to giving us portal access away from the desk, these are meant to replace our aging industrial radio system. As expensive as these are, they're still much cheaper than $1.5 to $2k per person for a radio that has no other built-in functionality and these do seem pretty ruggedized.
Still a shame about the phone functionality though.

Can you see what browser it comes with? Can you install (untrusted) APKs directly without rooting it?
FYI, in case anyone's wondering, there is a version with Google apps on the way (if it isn't already orderable).

Browser is a standard one, which comes with other devices. Name is Browser.apk and version is 1.0.9
It's possible to install unsigned APK's without rooting.
google account
Hi,
I got stucked with trying to get google calendars from my google account to TC55.
I found one solution to setup google account as a corporate one, but it's not available anymore due to change in google policy.
I can setup google mail via email account, but that doesn't bring me my calendars to the device.
I tried to install gapps but without success.
Is there any other way?

No idea, I haven't tried. As far as I understand gapps are usually installed via flashing a zip from recovery, and the stock recovery of the TC55 does not have that option, it only allows reflashing a whole image, if I understand it correctly. Either way, I have come to appreciate the open source alternatives and do not want to get Google on my phone, so I will not try, sorry.
However, going by this thread over at the Motorola support forum, it seems it won't take long until there is official gapps support:

Motorola has now released a TC55-firmware with Google apps. Here are the release notes:

I think I screwed up my tc55 by enabling the multiuser function without first creating the white list. Now all the users (with admin rights) does not have access to all the programs, including Applock Administrator and Multiuser administrator.
To cut things short, do you know of a way to reset the device? I don't mind setting it to factory default and start over. I've googled it and some said to launch Rapid Deployment and scan a barcode from there... but my Rapid Deployment just says "Service Not Ready, Please Wait" and get stuck there.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

I want to Buy one TC55 for me. Normally i hate Android and the Google stuff on the Phone but some Motorola Salesman told me there is a version with out.
Now i use an Sybian Device. That mean i am "offline" the hole time and when i need Internet the Phone connect the the Internet.
So how about that phone can i work "offline" to?
I will also use an VPN Tunnel to block on my backend all Connnection i dont want. Does all Data trough this VPN Tunnel ?

Ok. I just bought a TC55 from a Friend and I was wondering if someone would post the update to get GSM and the Factory Reset packages. I went to the page and it requires all the information posted above before. Mine is rooted, but i am trying to install GAPS but the recovery is the basic and cannot. I manually installed Google Play and the Google Play Services but Google Play services keep crashing and the Play Store will not connect, any ideas ?

So my Google Playstore app broke after a mod (or a few days after an app [Stickman"] was "botified" [strangely, GPlay reinstalled it after I flushed it]). The "not responding" toast popped up more and as the corrupted files spread throughout my GAPPS over a couple days. Resultingly, I lost use of my VPN and also TWRP, both of which apparently depend on GPlay to function, (because I PAYED for them). The many solutions sadly did not apply here. I had Flashify, which I had loaded with my backup ROM and GAPPS, but when I went to go into recovery, the android (a Galaxy S4 4.4.2), couldn't go to boot, instead going to the ODIN Download page. I guess Flashify ALSO depends on a working GooglePlay app system to function. The kicker is, I have an identical Galaxy s4 ALSO in bootloop (removing the more commercial elements is DANGEROUS!) that has no CWM or TWRP installed that I was hoping to be able to save. I have my apps backed up on Titanium, both user and (corrupted) system, but I realized too late that TiB is only good for user apps. GPlay is sadly lacking at backing up the non cash-cow apps, so TiB has proved extremely useful. I loaded the ADB drivers (thanks to an awesome dev) on my friends PC, along with the custom ROM & GAPPS, but have zero luck loading them on either device (the serial number etc. fails to appear), perhaps it's a timing thing, or wrong commands. I have been thrilled and fascinated during my experience exploring this fantastic tech, but perhaps the fun is over. Is there any way to save these things? I am disabled and cannot afford but to try and fix them myself. The tutorials I've repeatedly gone over seem to lack the precise circumstances I am experiencing. Certainly, the multitude of solutions to the Gplay failure, though helpful and edifying, also lacked these factors. I really hoped for the day when I would know all the "Why's"; and "How's" regarding these things, but it doesn't look promising here. ANY USEFUL ADVICE would be GRATEFULLY RECEIVED.
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The best thing you can do at this point is flash the stock frimware with odin and start over. But, I don't know what variant of the S4 you have, i337, i9000, etc. so can't give you the proper link to help you.

Do you agree with this statement?
Did you change the ROM in your device or only de-bloated it? Tell me your experience. Easy to install, need to root, unblock the bootloader, update, what is NOT working, speed, battery, ...?
I own a Samung Tablet S5e LTE few months old, under guaranty and would like to de-google it. I was thinking to change the ROM, is tit the best way?
What is your advice? If needed, what ROM to use? What way, software to de-bloat?

Could you be more specific and tell me why, how (big picture) and if you have experience what tools did you use?
People most times use terms "De-google" and "De-bloat" not knowing what they are really speaking of.
The Vanilla Android ( read: AOSP - today often called GSI ) is totally free of apps developed by Google ( topic: GMS ) and the service ( GFS ) they need to run, this because NOBODY basically needs these to operate a phone. But the overwhelming majority of the users of mobile devices want an Android what is extended by features, so they can download & install more apps, play games, listen to music, watch porn videos. OEMs respect this wish - they want to sell their products - and therefore typically add GMS & GFS to their Android OS, so it in reality becomes a Custom ROM.
Resume: Vanilla Android - and all ROMS that are based on Vanilla Android ( like Lineage OS and many others ) must not get "De-googled".
Bloatware ( or Potentially Unwanted Programs - PUP ) is software users don’t want, that burdens and slows down a mobile device. It usually comes pre-installed by vendors, manufacturers or carriers. IMO "De-bloating" is the first thing a user should do when starting up a new device.
Bloatware typically is installed as system-app, hence phone's Android must got rooted before you can start "De-bloating".

I installed LineageOS 17.1 on my Samsung S6, it working fine, I am happy for the usage but the only issue I have is that I can't update. This is another story in another XDA forum.
My need are usual plus
Read books, music sheets, social networks, Internet TV, news, training, conference (low bit-rate), email, messaging, GPS travel, basic pictures,
some specific app for music practice (tuner, metronome), veg gardening (I need to find one suitable for me).
but no game, no HD movie (download or stream), no large download
Backup locally (I need to learn more), no cloud usage.
As I run GNU/Linux for around 20 y, I hate to have to register for account in any app from GAFAM and I don't want as much as possible give them my data. I try to select the app without tracker, FOSS and I block the permissions as much as possible.
If I can de-google this is the best for my mindset.
I understand that de-google or de-bloat, I 'll have to root so break Knox. Right?
I don't know if I need GMS and/or GFS for my use. Could you tell me? For what app it is mandatory?
With my S5e I want to be more cautious, I need a way as secure as possible to not brick it.
With all these info, what do you advice?

For the Tab S5e de-googling it is next to impossible with stock samsung rom. LOS works great on it and not too difficult to install, CRDroid works well on it but is better with google installed, /e/ rom was being developed for it but I don't know if they are still working on it. I built an /e/ rom locally for my Tab S5e last year and it worked very well. If you want to get away from google you need to ditch the OneUI or whatever they are calling it.

Exodus, a popular, albeit closed-source, crypto wallet app recently stopped working on my device. After a few days of back-and-forth troubleshooting via support, they somehow realized that my device is both rooted and running a custom, open source, community-supported ROM. They told me this was no longer allowed because it is far less secure than running the proprietary ROM. I countered with both personal testimony (back when I had a Blu phone, and a year later they got kicked off Amazon due to spyware streaming customer data out without consent) and common fact that OEM ROMs are almost always packed full of bloatware and spyware. I countered that installing a reputable open source ROM with only those apps I want and need is better. I argued that root gives me the ability to use AFWall to block outbound access to apps that I don't want having having access to the Internet without my permission. I could have argue that continuing to use a 1-2 year old phone that no longer receives security updates when I could use an open source ROM that does is better. I also provided a few public articles showing how frequently apps from the Play Store and other "OEM" stores are caught abusing their users' trust and performing malicious action. My point was that it's not correct to just automatically assume that having root and using a non-OEM ROM is less secure. That's a falsehood. But that said, I am interested to know what the XDA community thinks about that. And if the XDA community has any facts about custom, open source, community-supported ROMs being more secure than OEM ROMs, I am interested to further arm myself. And of course, I am completely willing to be instructed by the XDA community that indeed Exodus is right and using a custom ROM and having a rooted phone is completely, inherently, automatically more insecure than using an OEM ROM full of bloatware and spyware, not having root so that any rag-tag app can stream data back to home base, and falling behind with security patches because the vendor is either too slow to release or decides my device is no longer worth supporting.
You can't blame them for not troubleshooting unknown firmware. You changed the playing field.
Less mainstream use and support* is one of the disadvantages of custom roms and rooting.
I run stock and use other methods to kill bloatware. Zero brick risk, little down time and they run well.
I'm not saying don't root etc... but you knew the job was dangerous when you took it.
*this can have potentially far reaching and multifaceted implication$
@blackhawk I'm pretty sure it wasn't broken on my phone. One day I opened the app and it said I needed to update to continue using it. So I thought maybe the app just had failed to automatically update from the Play Store. But shortly thereafter I found it wouldn't update. That led to opening support ticket with them which eventually led to them saying it no longer works on rooted devices. Their argument was that they were attempting to protect me. My rebuttal was that I don't want their protection, I want my freedom back. They should focus on making their app as secure as possible and then, if they discover I am running it on a rooted phone, then give me a warning box and force me to accept it but don't just take away my freedom.
The irony of their stance is that they still provide the Linux program. And who doesn't have root access on their Linux computer? Or their Mac or Windows computer, for that matter? I can completely understand if they don't wish to troubleshoot the installation of the Debian package or even the use of the zip on every Linux version out there. I wouldn't either! But that's completely different than saying, "Oh, you have root access to your Linux/Mac/Windows computer? We can't let you use our program anymore." That makes zero sense, and it's the same nonsensical argument they are making for rooted Android phones.
I run stock N10+'s because they're easier to troubleshoot, maintain and it doesn't trip the Knox efuse. I have to add a package disabler and do some optimizing but it's child's play for me to do it at this point.
Unfortunately if you root you're going to have to suck it up and do the work needed to optimize it.
Same thing I do with stock but with more tools at your disposal... after the learning curve.
It's this learning curve, the chance of bricking and the damage that can be inadvertently done to the OS with no access restrictions are some of the downsides. Rooting takes time to learn and perfect. With unlimited power, blah, blah, blah.
I rather just do basic infrequent troubleshooting and have fun... my current load is over 1.5 yo, still fast and stable.
I don't update the firmware because that breaks things. No updates needed once you optimize it and find any needed work arounds... it's good to go. Anything from Pie up is pretty secure; they have some vulnerabilities but in practice this isn't an issue... unless you do something stupid.
I used to do it to flash firmwares but that does not seem to be prevalent any more, so why do I need to root?
I know this is a developer/modding site but I have to agree with the OP.
I come here for the general forum information that is "usually" more technical for obvious reasons. But to risk a very expensive tool for unlocking and modding....the risks far outweigh the benefits...IMO...YMMV
App & system theming (with Substratum + Swift Black, Repainter for pure system AMOLED black & Project Themer for different notification styles, lockscreen clock etc.). System-wide equaliser (currently with JamesDSP but will await VIper4Android working on A13 hopefully), system-wide ad-blocking. Revanced Youtube for background play etc.
Plus with AOSP Mods via Magisk it adds tons on features like customisable quick toggle column/row quantities + label text size, clock position, removing carrier label from status bar, long press power button screen off for torch and so much more! Plus not to mention custom rom support which whilst sometimes buggy, come with a wealth of benefits. I like to stick to stock these days with AOSP Mods & Magisk, as that module has many features and saves having any custom rom bugs (e.g. on Pixel 6 Pro, a custom rom would lose Magic Eraser whereas having a modded stock, retained it)/
I get the risks, but we do plenty of research and tread carefully and all is generally ok!
Got my Pixel 7 Pro just today and bootloader unlocked after the first OTA came through. It's now rooted and without passing safetynet currently, all cards successfully added to my Google Wallet.

I used to root every one of my previous phones, but I've not done so on my Noted 10 Plus as I find Samsung Pay too useful. And rooting destroys it forever. Not sure if Google Pay still works when rooted, that may nudge me to do it.
I have no plans to root my 7 Pro when it arrives. But that may change.

For me the main thing is working app backup, since the Google solution is absolutely unreasonable (I have several non-play-store apps that I have had on every smartphone I've owned, and data generally isn't saved with Google anyway) But also tons of little things like being able to set a limit on battery charge level, full (to the extent still possible) filesystem access, a floating CPU monitor I like, Greenify, Island, Tasker stuff, etc.
System wide as blocking since 2012. No other phone does it better and easier.
How about Banking? I ditched rooting since all Banking apps denied to work. Workaround didn't work anymore.

Just use their website? Or switch banks? I have my primary bank with a local outfit that doesn't care about rooting (although that's not why I got them, it certainly helps keep me there) if I need to deposit a check and everything else can be done on their mobile website.
My main reason would be for the custom Kernels and for Viper4Android. I didn't have a bunch of $ to fork out for 2 new phones so I went with Verizon so I won't be getting either unless I hit the lottery and then buy a Google Version of the P7P.
Anyone remember what made us able to root/ unlock the bootloader On the OG Verizon pixel?

For instance, I know the Samsung Galaxy Note Ultra 20 5G on Verizon(The Device I'm switching from) was locked down but apparently some guy on XDA started an Unlock service and would unlock it for ~$100.
I root since it's my XDA addiction!

From memory on the Verizon Pixel 1, there was a bug on Android 7.10, I believe it was, that fully just allowed us to toggle OEM unlocking on. From there it was a done deal. They patched it in 7.11. Again, from memory but it was either that or 7.11 before and 7.12 after.
And no, not likely to happen again. It would be very, very rare and like hitting the lottery. Didn't happen on the Pixel 6 Pro.

Maybe I will contact the guy doing it for the note 20 ultra and see if he thinks whatever he's doing to those phones is possible here.

The reality is that forced hardware attestation and the Play Integrity API will soon put an end to the tricks used to get around detection so people will have to figure out what root is worth to them. I decided awhile ago that I can live without it. Adb pull /sdcard does a nice enough backup job for me and Google's cloud backup pulls partial app data and will restore it where applicable.
Of course it does seem that there isn't a way to disable 5G SA on Pixels without disabling 5G altogether so I may have a use for root in the end anyway, time will tell, as I get sick of being stuck on T-Mobile's slow as molasses SA when midband is available.
Well i have rooted every other phone and rooting, installing kernel or roms solve some problem where oem is lazy or will not solve. Previously i was using OnePlus 7 pro with unlocked bootloader initially with Android 9. During Android 10 i prefer to lock bootloader again as during that time i was damm busy and getting time for root and transfer data was not possible. During Android 11 Oneplus had really ****ed up, device was getting hot like frying pan in summer. I really had no choice but to unlock bootloader and installed a stable custom rom(CR Droid) . Everything was perfect. After 9-10 months i thought i willl go to stock again and lock bootloader. But to my surprise cts profile was not getting matched. My phone was constantly recognized as Google pixel 6 pro (no NFC payment and play store dont recognize netfix) . Only safety net fix with Magisk was able to fix it. What really surprise is when i again installed Oxygen OS 10 cts profile was showing match with locked bootloader and with Oxygen OS 11,12 will show CTS profile mismatch. I really don't know what i had done wrong and there is no solution for locked bootloader.
So my suggestion is if anybody really want to unlock bootloader and have magisk prefer with your secondary device.
Is it possible to unlock 5G in another countries with root while having functional google wallet?
I only do it for AdAway. Would be wonderful if I could avoid rooting for blocking ads since it makes a few apps unusable (specificly Norwegian with no rooting community support). But I'll probably root my P7P when I get it on monday.
