hey guys just wanted to know that is it possible to connect external harddisk or a pendrive to universal ( exec ) ? i want to connect my external harddisk to universal and want to see harddisk data on universal is it possible plz rep .. thanx
1) wrong forum(again?!)
2) not possible as universal does not supports USB-hosting capability.
True, the Mini-USB interface on the Uni can NOT be a USB host, only a client. In order to be a host, you need a normal USB port, only found on laptops or PCs.
Too bad...
I work with my Dad as an I.T. tech in alberta and my phone is super useful but I thought of a feature that I'd like to ask about. We find we have a lot of boot cds and it's a pain in the butt because you need to pack them everywhere and can't forget them in a customers computer. Which brings me to the main point.
Is it possible for the android to emulate a cd drive? I imagine it is because in Cyanogenmod with USB tethering, the phone is seen as a USB wireless device.
Anyway, I'd like to be able to keep an image of xp, ubuntu, hirens, puppy linux and maybe more on it and then "change disks" on the phone, you know? So it's not a bootable usb drive but an android-phone-emulating-a-cd/dvd-drive with a menu on the phone to select which disk image to "insert".
Cant figure out where else to ask this but you all seem to be the brightest group of computer users I know.
I may be dreaming on this technology and I cant find much form web searches here is my thought please let me know if it or something similar would work.
Have a thumb drive running an OS (Ubuntu, or Windows 7,8 whatever) that is plugged into a USB input on a cable or WiFi modem. So technically this thumb drive is always on or I can somehow access it to turn it on. Now the tricky part. I would like to access this windows or Ubuntu via my android table or my note 2 and use it as though it is my desktop (as needed). I see I can use apps like "Jump" to access a freestanding computer with internet connection but wondering if I can take it a step further and just have everything housed on the thumb drive.
I ask this because I recently lost my tablet due to display issues. I am interested in alternatives before I go buy another full on computer.
thanks in advance for the assistance.
It sounds like you are asking for two separate things, booting from a USB drive, and accessing that computer via a tablet. For the first, you can use a program such as Unetbootin, to create a bootable linux distro onto a USB drive. With that, you should be able to have a fully functional linux distro on a USB stick. For the windows equivalent, you could try WintoFlash. As for the second part of your question, if you enable SSH on your computer, you should be able to SSH tunnel into your computer from any other device that has SSH. As android devices already allow themselves to be SSH'ed into, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use it to access your computer remotely.

Thanks for the info! Yes you are correct I am trying to do both those things, however I am trying to do it without the need of a physical PC. I kind of want this boot able thumb drive or whatever to be my PC that I can access whenever needed. I am thinking this is kind of like a virtual server but I dont know how those are housed. i have heard there are cable modems with a USB drive on them to allow them to act as a server if I could just access my boot-able windows or Ubuntu thumb drive that is in the cable modem that would be what I'm wanting.
Does it have to be a USB device? If not, you could look into using a Rasberry Pi to do just that. If you want to have your own virtual server, you would need some sort of physical PC or other device, although if you only want to have a box that just constantly hosts VM's, you could look into running your own ESXi server. with ESXi, you could just turn on the box and any computer on the network should be able to use the VM's that are being hosted on the server. However, you do need the VM tools to do it so I do not know if you can use an Android Tablet, unless you figure out a way to SSH into the VM without using the tools or porting the tools over to Android.

Well it can be anything really just prefer not to go through having a "box" if I can skip all the steps and just access it to run the OS. That raspberry Pi looks pretty cool wonder if there is something similar out there to run a windows OS. Looking at it if I rooted my phone apparently i coudl run Ubuntu on the phone
yes, basically you would just run a virtualbox on your phone and SSH into it as a localhost. It works the same way for SSHing into an actual box. The problem is that you wanted windows OS, and windows 7 uses at least 20 gb in storage just for the OS alone, therefore it would be impractical to run it from your phone. If you want windows at some point you will need to have a box even if it is just running as a server.
I've noticed that the OTA 4.4.2 update breaks native OTG forcing me to use a file manager app that supports OTG from the Play Store. With that said, does anyone have any recommendations for good file managers with USB OTG support? Preferrably paid with no adds, otherwise paid, but not too expensive (under <$5).
Also does anyone know if File Explorer (fx) supports USB OTG? I've been a long time user but I can't find anything in their documentation that mentions USB OTG support.

Im pretty sure ES file explorer does and there is a free version. I will test it when I get home.
I thought maybe Nexus Media Importer would do it, I couldn't figure out how to copy entire directories from my /SD Card folder to the USB drive though :/
ES File Explorer (under KK) doesn't show the USB Drive like it used to under JB (Storage USB 1.1.1) which is a shame so I too wouldn't mind knowing a file explorer app that works (and allows write to the usb drive without rooting)
Kinda pissed Google broke USB OTG for KK, have you ever seen how slow Airdroid is at transferring big files over wi-fi...

use stickmount to mount the memory and then use es file manager to acces the files
Looks like it needs root, is there a non root solution?

I would like to know if a non-root solution is possible.
If I have to root it, is there a guide somewhere to know I can root my Moto G? I have the US GSM model (XT1034), 16 GBs, and it has the OTA 4.4.2 applied.
On Google+ someone suggested I use Total Commander with the USB plug in (both available from Google Play, and this does work, although the UI is like something from 1990
This solution doesn't need root, give it a go and see if it fits your needs.

That's true, I can confirm it works but in READ ONLY mode.
To write smth to USB Flash Stick / microSD connected via OTG you still need root.
PS
Read only is more than enough to cover my needs cause you still can copy files/folders from memory stick to internal memory.

Yep Techguyone is bang on the money. Tested file explorer and various other usb apps and I can confirm that what worked in JB no longer works. Is this something to do with ART?
I can't understand why they would hobble this feature..... Could it be security related? I remember reading about the 'Fraud docks'. Where people would use a mobile charging hotspot and when they plug their android or iphone in it steals their data.....
It's not ART related, google are just gradually locking down their phones more and more which is to be honest, starting to get annoying. It's ridiculous to need root just to be able for example: to turn on/off GPS or Airplane mode. It's getting stupid now. Google are you listening?

If its not security related, then it is probably more of a 'differential pricing' issue. Moto G has been too successful and is probably canablising sales from the Moto X and Nexus 5 more than expected, so they rush out 4.4.2 and lock up USB OTG and other features on the budget handset......
Use Nexus Media Importer, I was using it before the KK update and have continued to use it since getting KitKat. It works for reading and writing both ways without root. I have never rooted either of my G's. This is a fact not a guess as I actually use it.
And, you can copy entire directories both ways too. (edit)
I would like to know some things about the Linux on the Shield.
1) I've heard in December of the Last Year it didn't support wifi, bluetooth and SD Cards. What is their current status now?
2) Does it supports USB Devices, like Keyboard, Mouse, Ethernet Adapter (I REALLY hope i don't need this), Printer and USB HUB?
3) Is there some kind of Driver for the Tegra 4 on the Linux?
4) How do i install Linux on the Shield?
5) Is there some way to dual boot it with Android?

Good news - Wifi and SD cards are now working (well, most SD cards at least) on my roth_next branch: https://github.com/linux-shield/kernel/tree/roth_next Bluetooth is still out of luck for now.

All USB devices supported by Linux should be working with SHIELD, as long as the kernel driver for them is compiled. I have played with a keyboard, mouse, network adapter and mass storage device, all connected to a hub.

Not sure what you mean - Tegra 4 is supported in Linux mainline, and some of its devices as well.

It's a quite manual process at the moment. You might want to consider what your end goal is, and whether it is worth the trouble, knowing that there is no graphic acceleration, no way to sleep, and so on. If you really want to give it a try (it implies cross-compiling the kernel, playing with fastboot, and extracting user-spaces to SD cards), let me know and I will try to come with a documentation sometime soon.

Sort of. You can store the Linux user-space on a SD card, or even in a file on your Android data partition that will be mounted as a root loopback device.
The problem is that SHIELD's bootloader only supports booting via two means:
- Whatever kernel is on the BOOT partition
- Whatever boot image is given to it using the fastboot boot command.
This means that you can either keep the Android boot image on the BOOT partition and boot Linux using "fastboot boot" while your SHIELD is connected to your PC via USB, or the other way around. But if you want to switch the system to boot, you will need to connect your SHIELD to your PC and play with fastboot.
Let me know if this answers your questions and if you need more information. What you can do with Linux on SHIELD is still limited ; but it's a fun way to get involved in kernel hacking since many missing drivers can easily be written and general support can also be improved.

Nice! No need of a ethernet adapter.

Nice. Does there is HPLIP for ARM devices?
"Not sure what you mean - Tegra 4 is supported in Linux mainline, and some of its devices as well."
I mean 3D drivers. Which would allow specific apps to run fine.

I want to use it as an office OS for doing things that Android can't as my desktop is dead.

So i still need a Desktop for boot it? :/
Sent from my GT-S7562L using XDA Free mobile app
If you just want to use your SHIELD as an office device, your needs may be better served by one of the many "Linux on Android" apps, e.g:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
This will allow you to run a Linux desktop alongside with Android, without rebooting, without recompiling kernels, and without requiring a desktop PC.
Graphics will be slow as death, but that should be enough for LibreOffice & pals.
Network will work using the Android stack, USB devices such as keyboards and mouse should work fine too.
Jetson TK1 Development Pack
Have either of you looked at the Jetson TK1 Development Pack and the Linux4Android drive image that comes along with it? Its based off of Ubuntu 14.04 - and i believe has acceleration - so if it were to be flashed, it 'should' work - since its meant to work on the TK1 dev kit - no garuntees though
Can we please get a documentation writeup?
Very interested in your development process. I'm a new developer, and this is my main device.
