I know this is a tired topic, and it seems without legit root + TB that it really isn't doable...still, I'm very curious if there are strides made that maybe I'm not aware of. All of my searches, regardless of device, seem to be more or less the same; you can get a good chunk between apps like Helium, SmartSwitch, and ADB backups, but none of those will be all-inclusive or really even close to that.
For those seasoned in this, is this just the status-quo at this point? Devs, is it safe to assume that without root, one simply cannot backup app data verbatim?
I ask for the obvious reason: I don't necessarily recall every user ID and password, all settings, etc that I set up for a given app. Especially with the introduction of finerprint readers. I seldom have to type in passwords anymore, between saved credentials in Chrome and established logins on individual apps.
I'm really hoping it isn't a far stretch to find a way to transfer, if not backup this data completely.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
Works on majority of apps, make sure its set to app data only, otherwise it won't backup. If it nags about some desktop password remove pin/pattern or any other screen locks.
If you want to backup sms/mms/call logs use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup

I've used Helium in the past, and it wasn't all-inclusive. If I do app-data only, will it backup app data that includes login info and whatever settings I've configured per app?
You really don't have much choice, this is the only app that can backup data, you can try smart switch but I didn't have much luck with it. Just try it and hope for the best.

Are you coming from a non samsung phone? When I had to return my 1st Note 7 I backed it up to the samsung cloud and when I received the 2nd Note 7 I restored from the cloud and it did the screens, apps, data and everything. I was surprised and also happy with it.
I currently have the S7 Edge. Samsung cloud is enabled on it. I sincerely can't be the only one who is looking for this ability without root though.
Im also searching, but for per app as helium doesnt work for me

I can't remember as it's been well over a year. If you have Samsung Pass on your phone and you back it up I would think it would log you in to your individual apps.
Hi all,
I finally made the jump to OnePlus!
However, there is one feature that I miss from Honor 6x, and that is App Twin, which I use for having my two WhatsApp Numbers on the same phone. (Yeah dual sim is great!)
What is a good alternative to this for OnePlus 6?
OnePlus has a similar feature.
Go to settings -> Apps -> Parallel Apps
Works pretty much the same. Enable it for WhatsApp and you'll have 2 WhatsApp with individual accounts.

Just keep in mind that parallel apps will break twrp backups unless you delete them before you restore.
Or install WhatsApp and WhatsApp for Business then you don't need parallel apps.

How exactly does it break backups? I've used TWRP backups and restore on the boot partition before while having it enabled. Or does it only break it for certain partitions?

I don't use them so I don't have any experience with it. But many, many people have reported problems with it. There are a couple of threads discussing the issue, here's one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/255-error-twrp-backup-restore-999-t3801632
It may have been fixed with the most recent OOS update.

The OnePlus 6 uses a/b partitioning which is different than many other devices with the exception of a few. While doing a backup with twrp you will run into a 255 error (999 folders) created by parallel apps. This will either happen when you make a backup or when restoring. I personally have not heard of a workaround besides deleting the folders before backing up. I have found a way to remove these folders permanently without having to delete them one by one. Here is my thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/255-error-twrp-backup-restore-999-t3801632
The Parallel app is working nicely and shows up in the app drawer as a separate icon.
However the original WhatsApp now also opens the "choose optional or parallel app" screen.
Anyone know how to cause the original WhatsApp to just act like a normal WhatsApp, just like the parallel version does?
I generally keep the WhatsApp versions on different screens - home number and abroad number, which are both used equally as much. I edited different colour icons to keep them distinguishable.
Actually using WhatsApp business might be an option for this but I want to support the first party features first before trying that.
Parallel Apps has too many disadvantages for me, like the screen where you have to choose for the normal or the parallel app version. Also the parallel app version stores it's data (like pictures and video's) in a part of the os which you can only access if you have root. Furthermore did the parallel version of WhatsApp crash once for me and I could only get it back to work normally by using a testpackage from OnePlus. None of these problems when using WhatsApp for Business.

For app cloning/multiple accounts I use ISLAND. It's such a cool app. You can create an Island Profile and a Mainland Profile (the apps and the clones of the apps). I use it in "God Mode."

I just installed WhatsApp Business. Yeah the only difference that matters is that it says business in the app and the icon has a B in the notification.
B is okay, because it's for the secondary account and it's fine to label it B. I am not so OCD to care that it says business in the app. (yeah from someone who spent almost 24 hours replicating his preferred settings in all apps).
Point is, it functions just as I need now. ?
Edit: actually at this point I think I will disable Parallel completely. I am currently looking for the command to delete profile 999, which I saw in a previous thread while looking for rooting methods.
Thanks all for the replies!

Just install WhatsApp and link it to your first SIM. Then install WhatsApp for Business and link it to your second SIM. That's all.

Hi.
Just had and upgrade from OnePlus 6t to OnePlus 7 pro. I was thinking, that it's gonna to be easy walk in the park using my old friend Titanium backup. Ow how I was wrong. I used "migrate system data" checkbox checked
Every third user app force closes after restore from titanium backup
All user settings bluetooth / wifi pairings was was not restored successfully. Didnt even tried messages and call logs, as I read in play store comments, that it's also a failure
Box.com backups of app got's corrupted. Downloaded backups verification fails with "error with properties of backup". In details it shows: has data:yes, has app:No. But folder size is same as on source system. Simple to test on single device: backup any app, upload to box.com. Uninstall app and delete it's backup. Sync back from box to titanium backup. And this app is not restoreable anymore. Same test succeeds with google drive. Wrote support, but no answer. Ended moving files between devices via oneplus file manager file dash.
Folder organizer labels does not work anymore
How I can backup and move titanium settings and labels from one device to another? "Auto sync tb settings" checkbox does not generate any file on source device for me
UI issues trimming part of the labels / texts
And it's not only me. See one of the most thanked comment on play store from 2019-03-18:
App data backup / restore works, but that's about it. * It only backs up the main .apk file in a split apk. Restoring a backup of split apk will most likely cause the app to crash.Google is pushing app bundles hard, so these will become more and more common. * It doesn't backup Messages / call logs correctly (DB location moved to /data/user_de/0 sometime in Kit-Kat? This backs up the old location) * Backups occasionally fail reporting no space left, despite having more than enough available * Lots of UI issues, such as dark text on dark buttons - nearly illegible * Developer is unresponsive to support emails

I don't want to say farewell to my old beloved friend, but lack of support and such issues is not acceptable for me. Any recommendations for reliable backup app?
I think I found alternative: Swift backup.
Supports all new android features (split apks + permision restore). Also app has extremely active and supportive telegram group with app author in constant contact with users. Requested one feature, and it got implemented in a few moments!
I also now start running into hanging restores using trusty old Titanium Backup. So it stopped working properly. I indeed reckon it is due to split apks. So I am now also stuck wondering whether to ask for updating TB or move over to using something else. I will have a look at your found alternative, thanks.
Necrothreading here . But in 2020 Titanium still freezes on split APKs and doesn't support DE app data. I also took a look at Swift but immediately rejected it because it won't run even in a basic mode without GApps and a sign-in - useless when testing developer ROMs where the gapps might be broken.
Any other 2020 root backup solutions that work?
Those apps are not taken care because people don't root their phones nowadays. Would recommend you to use TWRP for backup.
had the same issue, but I fixed it with disabling this android setting: "Verify apps over USB". This setting is under system > developer options, so you will have to enabled developer mode..
I found this advice elsewhere, so I thought I'd put it here too. I'm looking for an alternative for titanium, (I'm happily using SMS Backup and Restore), but haven't found anything I like just yet.

I disabled "Verify apps over USB" and it allowed my hanging restores to complete.
HOWEVER, the apps in question then crashed every time I tried to open them. So not truly a working solution.

did you take a look at logcat for details of the crash? I think I had similar issues, and it turns out I needed to change permissions/ownership on a single directory (/sdcard?). I had to do this once, and then all subsequent restores have been working fine. it's quite easy to do with "adb logcat" and then just try to start the app.
The best thing I did was not to try to restore everything on the new phone, but just selectively restore apps that I missed from the old phone over time. apps like signal/whatapp need specialized restore processes anyway due the encryption, and the storage of data outside of the app data location.

SWIFT requires GAPPS. If you're trying to move away from Google, it won't work.
I have noticed on my own phone that Titanium Backup often does not restore the APK properly. However, I have had great success with it in restoring app data and I can always download and install the app from APKMonk, APKMirror F-Droid or my backup APK. Unfortunately, without GAPPS, the Titanium Backup PRO key will not work and the free app is too limiting. Titanium Backup does have the capability of using a license file and I have tried multiple times to contact the programmer to acquire or re-buy the license file but I have heard nothing back from them since I started pestering them a month ago, not from their TitaniumTrack website, not from the legacy page and not by direct email to Mr. Bourquard. I'm going to keep trying but there have been no updates to the app in Google Play since 24 Nov 2019 (the TitaniumTrack website has a change log but no update date). I hope he isn't dead ...

The problem of apps with Split APK's makes it harder to make your own backup APK, and if you can't find the full APK on a mirror, you can be in trouble.
I have found a good solution using SAI ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aefyr.sai&hl=en&gl=US ).
I backup the app with TiB (which, as you say, does a good job still with the app data). And I backup the APKs with SAI. Between the two, I can rollback/restore/etcetera.

That's not a bad idea.
I recently migrated away from Google and have /e/OS loaded on my phone without GAPPS. I can use Aurora Store to access Google Play but SAI is also available in the /e/ store so I'll get it from there. I had looked at and rejected SAI because it doesn't save app data but I'll try combining the two.
I'm not sure why Swift Backup is not talked about more often. It's one of the best backup app out there. Way better than what Titanium offers.

i'd spent alot of time in setting up my theme and page, especially on icon editing,

is google backup still viable? if so, i should setup those gms stuff 1st before restore my google?
thanks for any advice.
The Chinese version of Android machines (including Huawei, of course) will have the machine clone app pre-installed.
It is available in the corresponding application market of the machine, and the installation is very convenient. For the replacement of Huawei machines, new and old machines can be seamlessly operated
You can use Phone clone to copy from old to new. If you are using Nova launcher on your old phone, use the backup functionality in the launcher, install Nova on the new, restore the backup.

If you want to transfer data like app, contacts, sms, music, photos, videos, books, call logs, the best way is using phone transfer software. By using such tool, you can transfer data from your old phone to you new p40pro directly on computer via USB cable or wifi connecting. It's ease and safe.

Either the 7 pro has a new file structure, or Swift Backup is a 32 bit app, which ia no longer allowed on the 7 pro version of A13. Whatever the issue is, if you have important data, keep the 7 pro in the box until another option for restoring app data is available.
Just trying to save folks some time amd effort.

Ive restore my backup successfully ( or almost successfully , cause few apps were crashing afterwards..lol) from my 6pro
I will also try it at the weekend. An alternative (perhaps) is Migrate. But if both won't work, then this would be a quite big deal...
I was gonna open a thread about this!
I got in touch with the dev on Telegram and that's what he said:
1. How many apps have you tried restoring?
2. By any chance are these apps that are secure? Payment apps, apps with accounts, apps that use encryption using Android Keystore, etc.
3. Pick a small app like Geekbench for testing backup and restore and let me know how it goes.
Also, I was linked to this FAQ: https://swiftapps.org/issues#restorefail
I guess I'm not switching to the 7 Pro until I can find a way to transfer my apps (from a 4 XL).
swift backup worked fine for me. (OP20 pro -> P7 Pro)
But needed to log out in swift backup cause it uses google login.
After that yo have to give swift full root access. Then it worked for me
Restoring apps from P6P is working well for me. The apps that are crashing are likely encrypting data with a master key stored in Android keystore and they crash because master keys can't be transferred between devices.
I tried using Titanium Backup to transfer a few apps' data from Pixel 3XL to 7 Pro, and they all failed. Swift was able to restore data for a certain Candy-based game with success, but that was the only one I tried.

Follow up on this: I chatted with the dev on Telegram and he said most people were able to transfer their stuff to the Pixel 7 without any problem.
He's gonna get one himself soon so he'll be able to test things more thoroughly I guess.
I transfered without issue except on a few that had biometrics setup. I had to clear those and setup manually.
It will fail on 32bit native applications. 32bit is enabled in P6 and disabled in P7.
I have been emailing the developer too. Of the 190 apps that I restored, about 20 of them didn't work after being restored.
Keep my new Pixel 7 Pro in the box? I used a neat trick by letting the Playstore download all my apps. Then just took the time to log in and setup as before. Pictures and videos OTG flash drive. Text Messages and MMS I let Next SMS handle it.
Most of the apps I transferred using Swift worked. TB has been dead on my P6P for awhile unfortunately, just crashes on open so I tried Swift and was able to transfer with maybe a 90% success rate out of 20+ apps that I didn't want to set back up manually. I'm only recalling 2 maybe 3 so far that didn't work. I didn't bother trying anything sensitive like banking/stock/crypto etc.
PSA: v4.2.3 is being pushed to the Play Store.
Pixel 7 users should update asap.
Changelog:
Apps: Fixed an issue on Pixel 7 & Pixel 7 Pro where Swift Backup failed to properly restore apps with split APKS
Apps: Fixes for proper backup of permissions like Picture-in-Picture, WiFi Control and Turn screen on OneDrive: Added retry mechanisms for some temporary OneDrive errors
Wallpapers: Some optimizations when user has a very large number of wallpaper backups
Other fixes
4.2.3 not showing for me here in the uk on play store. still 4.2.2.
it will take a while for it to update across playstore

Not everything gets copied over. Best to hook up the old phone to the computer and run adb pull /sdcard to make a backup of the sdcard. Delete the Android folder from the backup and then drag and drop it onto the new phone. Like my Signal folder didn't get backed up so I had to manually copy it over and restore the backup and none of the non-stock folders in the root of the sdcard storage got brought over either.
