PinePhone Questions - General Questions and Answers

I've been trying to find out if this really is like having a desktop in my pocket. Can you really do things with this phone that you would normally need a desktop for, like rooting another phone? Or flashing firmware on an MP3 Player? Or rooting other Android devices like a tablet? If this is possible, please let me know.
It would be awesome to be able to get things like that done with a phone rather than carrying a laptop around our going back home to my desktop. Thank you in advance for any insight!

Seeing as it's running Linux, you could potentially use it for rooting another device, as the ADB Platform Tools are available for Linux.

Thank you for the insight, man. Do you know of anyone who has one of these phones or a phone running pure Linux on it to confirm that it had USB functionality through OTG and that rooting actually works? Again, thanks in advance!

Wifi Tether app works

OK, Since Root is out I just rooted my phone and installed the Wifi Tether app (avaiable in the market) and it works like a charm.
Have a friend with an iPhone and she was able to connect right up and get online.
Gotta' love root..

I am a recent cover from blackberry to android. One thing I am interested in is rooting. It seems like it us a must to get everything out of the phone... However it also seems much more complicated than loading a beta os on a bb. Can you point me to a good, step by step instruction site on rooting my X. I'm not a "geek" or anything close. I just want to get everything I can out of these devices. Also, does the app you mention work with all macs? I noticed a lot of apps only work with pcs.

WiFi tether is of course OS agnostic. It sets your phone up as an access point.
Other apps are USB or possibly Bluetooth tethering, and that might require a client side app.

Thanks for the help. if i understand correctly, the app would allow for wifi hotspot without paying the$ 20. Fee to vzw?

Yes.
The "legality" (Violates TOS, etc) is another matter.
Ok.
I've looked at the sites explaining the rooting process and I think I get it. The crackberry community was great about providing support to people who wanted to do more. So far the android community seems on part with that, just need a rooting and android/linux for dummies site. Its a lot more technical than the bb os.

The "hardest" part of this will be setting up the Android SDK and making sure adb works properly.
This is my sort-of first Android phone (I had the Droid 1 on launch day, but took it back), so much of this is new to me too. I do have some minor linux experience, which helps, but I just followed the video link I posted step for step and had no problems.
The problem is, I don't know what android sdk or adb mean. That's why i'm not rushing into rooting. I am scared to brick this device. I love it (except for 8 hour charge on battery. But coming from a bb I should expect not to get the same two days) and am afraid of making a mistake due to lack of knowledge.
gonna post the info from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7334641&postcount=9 here again just in case u guys dont end up to see it
Here is a few things to keep in mind..
The Verizon 3G app is infrastructure, thus it works with things like PSP and Nintendo DS, which is why i keep it. The Wireless tether apps are only ad-hoc for now.
From what ive been told, the verizon app loads a different firmware in the wi chip before running.
this is why i ONLY use the hot app for PSP and DS and the rest wi-t for root
Hope this helps

You are wise to want to read all you can before jumping in.
Android SDK is the 'Software Development Kit'. It's the tools/drivers from Google that allow direct interaction with your android phone. While ostensibly intended for developers, it is the tool you will need.
ADB = Android Debug Bridge. It's a tool that comes with the SDK. It's a command line shell that allows you to push/pull files directly to the phone as well as open a shell (android is just a mini/modified version of linux - hence needing to get 'root' to be able to modify system related files).
Here is a link to a tutorial on how to take screen shots on the Droid X.
This is another thing that can be done with the SDK, so the important part of this tutorial is getting the SDK installed.

Hope that helps.
could have sworn DS and psp could connect to adhocs just fine, i know the wii can.
I've tried this with my nintendo wii. It finds the access point justice fine, but won't actually connect. Does anyone have any clues of possible setup corrections necessary?
I'm using the sapphire 32b.

no dice, trust me on that.. they can do ad-hoc if they are doing multiplayer gaming with other ds or psp units but not to go online
What to do
OK i hope to wifi tether as well. What is the process to set this up and what apps specifically do I need to get once I get my droid x? Thanks in advance.

See the various threads about Rooting your X.
If you want to pay VZW, then the app is already on there. If you want to cheat, you will need to Root.
I downloaded the droidxrootv2 zip file to my pc. The videos mention ADB what is this, and where do i get the drivers for it? Also is the wifi tether app named as such or is it called something else on marketplace? Thanks.

How would I go about flashing a ROM on a "generic" tablet

Hey guys
First let me say that I did try to look around the forums, but did not find anything relevant .. the search tool really isn't that great.
My parents, in all their wisdom, decided to go ahead and buy two "generic" android tablets whilst I was away at uni without asking for my advice.
Now had I known, I would have told them to stay the hell away from them, unfortunately I am now left with two annoying adults wanting me to make their tablets faster and better.
I am a pretty good programmer and am doing computer science at Uni, so I though i might try to root/flash a custom ROM onto those tablets myself (i know nobody else will ever do it). However I have never touched anything 'android dev' related (apart from obviously rooting and flashing my own HTC Desire) so I really have no idea about where to start.
This is where you lovely people come in: I would be oh so grateful if someone could put me in the right direction as to whatI should be looking into in order to root, and eventually flash a rom onto a new device that no other dev has ever touched before. I'm guessing that if people are doing it for mainstream devices, its entirely possible to do on the tablets I have, I just need to know where to start looking.
Thanks a bunch in advance guys, please don't be to harsh on me <3
I do not know if this will help you or not, but I also am trying to flash a ROM for a "generic" android device. Given that mine is a phone and not a tablet, I do not know if this would work for you or not therefore I'd recommend doing prior research; however, I was able to root my device using the z4root app.
As far as I know, the next step would be installing a recovery (such as clockwork recovery in ROM Manager) in case something goes wrong. I'm not certain about how one would go about porting that software, but their are instructions posted on the developer's website. I don't know enough about the process so I can't really give anymore input; however, if you find any other information, be sure to let me know as well
definitely will thanks!
I've got one problem with one of the tablets already .. it never came with a usb cable, and does not have a micro usb, min usb or anything that I may know as a port, it only has some kind of proprietary port that strangely looks like an iPod/iPhone/iPad port but I can't be sure as I do not own an ipodcable to try it out .. is it in any way possible that a generic tablet could have an apple connector on it?

I can just tell you from my experience using a Ciphone Pro (IP4 knock-off running android). It came with a cable that looks very similar to an iphone cable (my girlfriend and I cannot tell the difference between them). I can plug my phone into either my cable or her Iphone 3GS cable to charge; however, when she once plugged her phone into my cable, her Iphone said the charge was not compatible. Because the android phone didn't display any prompts when connected to the iphone adapter, I assume that these generic devices are compatible with it. I hope this helps, but you could also check all of the iphone cables you have lying around because maybe one of them actually came with the device

One thing that I've noticed is that there are quite a few "generics" out there that are actually rebadged versions of each other. If your tablets are one, then if you can find the line of tablets that they belong to, then you might be able to find a development community behind that line of tablets. If that's the case, then there might already be recoveries/roms available for you to flash onto these tablets. I'm not sure of a great resource but androidforums.net might help.

I would like to marry you Sir. Thanks to your advice I looked around, using the generic pads specifications, and ended up finding out that they were just "rebranded" flytouch epad. From there, I was able to find compatible ROMs for both tablets on http://www.slatedroid.com/ and http://techknow.freeforums.org.
I know have root, google apps and a nice speed increase on both of'em
Thank you very much for the help

Might I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm trying to see if I can install custom ROMs on my phone and I believe that it is more than likely that there is a compatible version floating around somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what I should be searching for, so if you have any pointers it would be greatly appreciated

All I did was look at the specs of my device (ram, processor, screen size and internal memory being the big ones) and just tried to look for any other device with the same specs. It took a lot of googleing though, so be ready to search through useless search results for a while.

Awesome! I'm glad you were able to find what you were looking for. I must, however, decline the offer as I am already married and polygamy is illegal here.

Linux on Microsoft Surface

I'm wondering if you can run Ubuntu or any kind of Linux. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes of course you can run Ubuntu, I have it right now on my Surface... :good:
Or wait, maybe we should wait till the device is actually out so we can check what can be done?
And if you want any kind of Linux tablet... try Android
Yeah this is something we will not know till people can get there hands on a device. The chances are no as its rumoured the bootloader will be locked and windows has no forum of chroot...but maybe in a virtual machine
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Secure Boot should be able to be turned off on the Surface Pro. Then you have a regular UEFI based boot loader which should allow Linux to run without problems (UEFI boot code is part of Linux through the Itanium support as Itanium always has been using UEFI).
For the Surface RT it will be locked so without cracking it open neither Ubuntu nor Android will be able to run on it.
It is more likely that Microsoft this time is taking the Apple model and putting it to practise. It is a hardware with software specifically fine-tuned as an appliance (i.e. total combo, seamless experience) both developed by the same developer. So it is unlikely that they would allow, at least officially, alternative operating systems to boot up. It may be possible but not trivial.
All this speculation, however, is pure nonsense

[Q] What to do with my TF101?

Hi all,
I haven't used my tablet in ages, because I don't know what to do with my tablet.
That sounds a bit strange, but I haven't found something interesting.
Some topics I'm interested in: hacking, modding, Linux, etc.
I was thinking about using my tab for controlling stuff in the house (lights, power, etc.).
But then, I could also use my phone for that kind of stuff. And their the problem begins, almost everything I can do on my tab, I can do on my phone.
It seems also to be difficult to sell the tablet for some reason, no one seems interested.
What I would like is to get Arch Linux on it or something that is clean, fast & up-to-date.
Or just some cool ideas I haven't done with the tablet yet.
Anyway, sorry for this question. But I hope to get an answer what to do.
Thanks!
Dunno about Arch, but there are a couple of Linux projects going on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2648862
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692270
Maybe learn from the above, and port Arch linux instead of *buntu
If you are knowledgeable with Linux, maybe you could take up where this project ended
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168473
And iirc, there was a way to emulate Win 95 on the TF a while ago
There are some hardware mod projects too, people have added laptop HDDs to the dock (inside) and wired them to the USB ports
But being an ARM Android tablet, options for projects are quite limited, I guess you could learn how to port Android and make your own ROMs for the TF101 / become a dev on XDA and release new builds of your ROMs like other devs do
--
Sounds like the Raspberry Pi would be more your type of thing, they have just released a new Model B+ for $35 the other day too, you can install Arch on that
I know some people set them up to use in the car for media devices or for obdii scanners. Just a thought.

Really the best way to figure out what it can do, and do better that your phone is to use it. There are some things I find much easier to do on my table than on my phone especially as I have a keyboard which gives me usb ports and a real keyboard. Much more convenient to type anything of length than my phone.
Anyway, you really just have to dedicate yourself to using it before you can make judgments as to what device is going to be best suited for what activities.

Question Linux User Question

Hello Everyone,
It's been a couple devices since my last Galaxy. Previously had the 1+8Pro and the P3XL before that. When I had the SGS4 I had a Windows PC and Odin. Now I have a Linux box and know I now have to get Hiemdall. Any advice on version info and anything else that would be beneficial to have?
Current setup is Linux Mint with KDE desktop but I'm thinking it's time for a change.
Here I am still excited about Linux Mint.
Naturally, updated and equipped with the latest version of OS and applications.
When I discovered Android as an operating system in December, by delving into the smartphone a bit moreā€¦.instead of just using it, I noticed that Linux is very closely related to Android.
This means among other things, that Heimdall works fine, but I still found it very difficult to understand and requires a lot of study and patience. (maybe because I used older phones to learn)
You might be interested in taking a look at Wine... then you can make Linux and Windows work together.
Also is Linux very well capable of running a Virtual Machine.
Linux, which today bears strong resemblance to Ubuntu, does have excellent support for ADB and the other necessary programs.
Just some thoughts. Sincerely.
I went to a Linux environment for the simple reason of easier interaction with an Android device. Under Windows there was almost always some type of issue. From drivers to programs not working right. With Linux there's none of that. Makes looking for a "way in" easier, too.
I was hoping for an answer like "get version X from here" but since posting my question I've found a couple. The new device will be here today. I'll be doing a repo/compile from Git and reacquainting myself with Hiemdall.

Have you successfully used Hiemdall to root your S22 Ultra?
I have a carrier locked device and can't root. I repoed and compiled but haven't used it yet. I want to switch over to the U1 firmware.
