Hello. I'm switching from an iPhone, on which I was able to share my 5G mobile connection to my laptop at 5ghz, which gave me 350mbps, however my new Pixel 7 pro is only offering 2.4ghz band, despite disabling "extend compatibility", I've read that this "feature" is new since Android 13.
How can I "fix" this "feature"? The hotspot is my only way to get internet, and 90mbps is not good.

5G for Hotspot works just fine on T-Mobile. Connects to my Laptop and have highs in 270-290 Mbps in house on the 5Ghz band. Im using a Macbook Pro.
make sure "ensure maximum compatibility" is turned off on the hotspot settings (thought there was a different way to do this before)
i never had "maximun compatibility" enabled, i also tried disabling 2.4ghz on my laptop device manager, but then the phone doesn't show on the wifi list, how can i fix this?

maybe the laptop only support 2.4ghz to android phones might need to update the drivers or firmware for your laptop wifi to support 5G with pixel 7
with my iphone 13 i get 5ghz hotspot (and my computer gets 350mbps from 5G)

Hi, hotspots on pixels work "smart". The hotspot is 5GHz, but as you move your phone further away from the connected device, it drops to 2.4GHz.... so try sticking your phone next to the computer/laptop, then turn on the hotspot. Should be 5GHz.
thanks for the advice @iplux , but i keep the phone a few milimeters from my computer all the time, so that's not the issue

I just got my 64gb G6 Edge and am experiencing major WiFi issues with the device. My devices wireless will disconnect randomly from a strong signal and I have personally observed it disabling and re-enabling the wireless by itself.
Also once disconnected it no longer sees ANY wireless networks no matter where I go even though it shows the "scanning" circle spinning and I know that there are strong known wireless networks by me. If I manually toggle the WiFi off and then on again, all wireless networks around me are detected again and if any of my known networks are present it will automatically connect. However after a period of time this connection will disconnect and I have to do the process over again.
I have already made sure that 1.) Smart Switch is turned off. 2.) Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is set to Always. 3.) Always allow scanning is enabled.
I have also tried disabling the WiFi Power Save mode [*#0011# and click on more>>WiFi>>"WIFI Power save mode"] this too resulted in the same behavior.
I've only had this phone for a day and a half, not rooted, already cleared cache partition from stock recovery etc. I haven't tried a factory reset yet (not sure how much good it would do), but at this point is there anything else I should try or is the consensus I need to get my phone swapped out?
**Update** So upon extensive further testing it seems that my wireless issues are caused by issues connecting to the 5GHz band on wireless access points that use bandsteering in that both 2.4GHz and 5GHz use the same SSIDs. This is a MAJOR problem for me as I encountered this at my place of work and rely on wireless heavily not to mention my phone heavily for wireless testing. There are no "Advanced" wireless settings for selecting which band to use either.
I really need some suggestions in order to try and get this problem solved or I may have to switch to a crappier phone just to have functional wireless.
I had something like that happen too, but I only noticed it at home. My home network has both 2.4 and 5GHz using same SSID. I set my phone to use 2.4GHz rather than the deault setting "AUTO", now it seems to work. Shouldn't have to do that though, but maybe my home network isn't setup correctly. This is not device specific though, it happened on my old M8 and now on s6 edge. So it must be on my end.

Unfortunately I have already tried those options, what I am looking for now is the ability to manually select what wifi band 2.4 or 5GHz my phone uses automatically on the phone itself as Apollo stated he was able to do somehow.

I can only imagine he meant router settings because the S6 doesn't show that ability. Sounds like you have to get different SSIDs for your 2.4 and 5 bands.

Sorry guys, I was wrong. I upgraded from M8 to M9 last week. I had to change bands on M9, like on the M8. Didn't like the M9 so swapped out for s6 edge. I did not have to do this on s6 edge!
I had a brain fart..sorry for confusion, it was the M9.
This is what I have found out in my thorough testing on this. The S6 / S6 Edge have issues connecting to AC Wireless networks. Upon connecting the devices wireless connection to and AC Wireless access point or router it will become unstable and disconnect randomly and in my firsthand experience will not re-establish wireless connections at all until WiFi has been manually toggled off and then back on at which point the process I described above will begin again if connecting to any AC Wireless device.
A workaround for the moment for home personal routers is to separate the SSID's if they aren't already for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz and to use the 2.4GHz channel. This won't help however for all the places you cannot change that have AC wireless AP's installed etc. I am continuing to test this device for a while before I return it as I require functional wireless in my day to day job.
This is a huge issue, I contacted Samsung support yesterday about this (You should too) as I have confirmed that this is happening cross platform and carrier, S6 & S6 Edge, Verizon & Sprint that I am aware of so I'm guessing it all of them.

Because at some point I did it… and now I can't undo it.
A year or so ago I thought I would have my computers on the 5ghz band and my phones on the 2.4ghz.
It worked well till now. I now want my phone on the 5ghz and it will not find any 5ghz wifi signal.
I thought it was a simple checkbox in an app I was/am using. But I can't find the option anymore.
I seem to have permanently removed the ability from the phone as newly installed wifi apps (wifi analyzer) can't see the 5ghz either.

I am pretty sure I have connected to 5ghz with this phone before.
But somehow I screwed it up!

Searched xda for about 40 minutes.
I read a bunch of wifi connectivity posts.
And im still too stoopid to fix on my own.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I found that from time to time, my XZ Premium losses WiFi connection and can't find any hotspot until I turn on then turn off airplane mode, or just restart.
Here are the screenshots form my S7 edge (SM-G935F) and XZ Premium, they were next to each other and very close to the router.

are you using 5G? if you are, you need to update the wifi channel and band through your router settings. that's what i did with mine and now i don't have that intermittent wifi connection anymore.

Wifi was spotty before the Android 8 update but now it's almost unusable. Every now and again it will just stop showing wifi connections, toggling wifi on and off might show a connection or 2 but it will either disappear or just say "Disabled" when trying to connect to it. Reboot solves it for a little while.
Usually use 2.4Ghz wifi with a variety of router brands.

Happens here on Android 8 as well, quite annoying to be honest. Sometimes drops the connection for no reason, and then when I click on WiFi settings, it doesn't show any connections till I turn WiFi on and off and even then it'll only show 1 SSID, turning it off for a while longer and then turning it back on brings back the rest of them and then it'll connect, but it's stupid how I have to keep doing this every few hours.
I set my 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to different names and join only the 5 GHz, and I don't get drops. On Oreo rooted.
i have xperia xz premium with Oreo 8.0 I encounter the same problems when I'm connected to my wifi, suddenly the data connection is blocked, and when this happens I have to turn off and on the wifi symbol to restore the connection. I do not understand why this happens. My phone is updated to the 47.1.A.5.51 system with November google patches. My modem is Billion Bipac 7800N
So it seems to be a common issue, anyone know if Sony is aware of it?
Where can we complain? It's their damn top of the range phone and it's most basic function isn't working right.

Knock yourself out. I've had more than one device with the Snapdragon 835 behave in this way, so I think it's a chipset issue.

Do a Google search for WiFi and Oreo and you will see that this is affecting multiple cell phones.
Do they all have the 835 chip in them???
I think it is an Oreo issue.
I have no such problems and I have Oreo and the 835.
Try disabling IPv6 on your router.
This is still OS/firmware issue but this temporally fix the issue

I found the solution:
My network works with two devices:
1 ZTE Router (2.4GHz)
1 D-LINK Repeater (2.4GHz)
In the router my XZ Premium works nicely, in the repeater happen exactly what you said, Connect apperars "no internet" after 1 second and wifi on Smartphone is automatically disabled or wifi stay enabled, but says "disabled" on network.
So.. I checked the wlan settings of the two devices in my network exhaustively item by item and I changed the devices settings about 20 times, I and I found that none of the settings matters (wpa or wep, 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz, Bandwidth 20Mhz or 40Mhz, type of network b / g / n, nor channel 1 to 13) just ignore this.
What REALLY MATTERS is a option in the advanced wlan settings, called "Fragment Threshold" this value was at 500, I changed it to the maximum (2346) and my XZ Premium started the connection instantly. Explaining: increasing this value defined that the packet can be up to 2346 bytes before being fragmented, so we deactivate packet fragmentation, reducing overhead and ensuring the best transmission rate possible, so this option determines the size of the frame.
Put simply: Go to advanced Wlan settings, locate "Fragment Threshold" and change to the highest possible value. That worked for me =)

3- turn off wifi and bluetooth scanning
4- go back turn wifi back on and enjoy

I have a Pixel 3 and my laptop randomly disconnects from the wifi hotspot, when I am moving through areas with high wireless congestion. I used a Redmi Note 4 with LineageOS before and did not have that problem. It only happens when I am on the train and I also see lots of messages like this in the logs of the laptop:
wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-SIGNAL-CHANGE above=1 signal=-38 noise=9999 txrate=650000
And especially this one:

Often times, the laptop seems to be able to follow the channel changes, but sometimes it doesn't. I continuously ping the ip of the Pixel 3 (which, btw. switches, every time I activate the hotspot, within the 192.168.43 subnet, I had 192.168.43.81, 192.168.43.35, 192.168.43.60, ...). The laptop still shows it's connected, but the ping to the phone fails.
Those frequency changes even jumps bands. Initially I would be in the 5Ghz band, but the Pixel 3 would switch to the 2.4Ghz band during operation. Presumably, because the 5Ghz band is too busy. I believe the disconnects (which aren't really detected by the network manager of the laptop) are connected to the channel changes, since I usually see a message for a channel change in the logs around the time I lose connectivity.
The options in the hotspot dialogue are very limited. Thus I was able to try all combinations, except for turning off encryption.
I am currently using Android 9 Pie, since we are getting 10 Q soon, maybe it will be better.
The laptop is running Debian GNU/Linux 10, but the wifi chip is fairly old (Intel Corporation Wireless 7265) and well supported, so I don't expect that to be the issue. I am also thinking about filing a bug with network-manager for failing to detect the loss of connectivity, but since I did not have the issue with the Redmi Note, I am also looking at the Pixel 3 as a potential way to fix this issue for me.
Are there more options hidden or other accessible, such as turning off the channel switches

I upgraded from the Pixel 5a. When I was on the Pixel 5a I could be connected to WiFi, turn on Hotspot and my devices could share the WiFi connection. This was great because I could connect to Hotel WiFi, sign in once and my devices would auto connect to my SSID.
Since I got the Pixel 7a, turning on Hotspot automatically disconnects from WiFi. Is this feature gone?
