Hello I would like the community's opinion regarding upgrading my current phone. I am currently Using LG G2. But I plan to upgrade my phone.
My primary candidates are HTC One M8, OnePlus One
The things I want:
- Good battery Life
- Primary Usage are Internet, and Watching Video
- Must be Reliable in terms of both Software and Specially Hardware***
I do intend to keep the phone I buy this time and keep it for a very long time like about 1.5 years or 2.
Please suggest me any other phone if you think it may suit my need
Also share your experiences about the issues faced by OnePlus One users.

htc and oneplus will also stop updating their respective phones when they are bit old as well just like any other manufacturer anyhoo up to you

Are you being serious? The Find 7a and OnePlus One are very similar. Lets clear this up,
Longer Battery: Oppo Find 7a has a 2800 mAh battery; whereas, a OnePlus One has 3100 mAh. OnePlus One is also using CM11S which is pretty much AOSP and is very battery friendly. Many reviewers praise the OPO for its amazing battery life. Battery life is not a problem, you can have the worst wakelocks possible and end the day with 30%+ battery remaining
Good display: Both of the phones have very identical displays. Same ppi, same resolution, same Gorilla glass.

Can you share if you happen to notice any problems/issue with the phone, or common issues faced by this phone?
okay if you get lucky you will get a great oneplusone. but like my people they have problems.
maybe some have the problem but don't mind
but on the french side of the oneplusforum, one guy made a poll and lets say that 6/20 people have touchscreen/hardware problems.
so or you gonna have a great phone or you gonna have to email etc oneplus to get e new full working phone.
and still the oneplus one is a great phone. but its hard to love. i wanted it. but now i don't, i don't want to take the chance to have a sh!t phone that makes me mad 'again!' it's a cool nice phone, but the quality control is not always the same. one phone works other one is sh!t, so if you have the money to buy a other phone do it.
if i don't try a other 300€/400 phone there alot out there. xiaomi, oppo, zte.
all new cpu s801 and full hd from 5" - 5.5" if one day oneplus will get there sh!t totether and make the phone 100% working. with maybe 1or 2 /20 that have problems would help

I don't have any problems. If I did, its fixed or workarounded. Some of the problems I encounter,
- Touch screen bugs: Fixed via kernel update. It is eliminated fully in the next OTA. Not a problem of Oneplus or cyanogen, its a fault of Synaptics, the company who does the touch screen.
- Yellow on the bottom.... I use screen filter to workaround it, although there has been reports that the newest revisions don't have this problem anymore and it is rarely visible.
... Overall the phone is great and is a great budget phone with the top of the line specs.

this is my concern also. it is why i am strongly considering getting the note 4. the 3 and 2 series have been exceptional.
However, the upgrade from 3 to 4 is negligible. Hence why im looking at the opo its these comments im reading here about its quality control which is making me hesitant. I hope we both enjoy our new phones but if you are debating then i would recommend you consider the note 4.

The thing is I has Touch Sensor issues with my LG G2, and spend a hell lot to change the whole display set. Now i want to get rid of it.
At this moment I am not sure if its worthy to spend $575 for HTC M8 or $450 for One Plus One 64GB. Those are the price at which these phone are sold in my country, so no arguments there.
I happen to use HTC M7 for 3 days which i borrowed from my friend and I loved its experience. But M7 has Camera Pink Tint issues and also USB connection port issues.
So you get that I am in a really confused situation. I dont want to spend so much money then worry about the reliability of the phone.
PS. Warranties are not available in my country other than Nokia and Samsung as other phones dont officially distribute in my country. And Samsung sold from the official dealers a really expensive. Like S5 costs around $700 with warranty

i aint spending 300+ € on a phone that's my thing more just would make it nan. that's much.
so at the end i always come back at the oneplus, or last week found the xiaomi mi3. other phone are not aviable for a good price in europe. and i don't want to pay extra for import tax ect. cause that will be like 50-80euro more for a phone that i bought for 300€ and i aint paying more than what i decided that i want to pay
so my choos i limited...

its only cheaper in selective market not everywhere , sigh smh people and their lack of research , and removable storage along with removable battery are LOT better than non removable one but thats subjective of course

If you're lucky you might get a great OnePlus One? Come on, that's bs. The truth is, if you're really unlucky you might get a bad one.
All these posts claiming that there are such high numbers of faulty devices are just wrong. You can run all the polls you like but it isn't going to give you an accurate figure at all. Not even close. All you're doing is measuring the percentage of the amount of devices from people who could be bothered taking a poll, or who stumbled upon the poll in a small forum.
I know a whole bunch of people who own this device, we're talking dozens, and only one of them has had any issues with it. The fact is that the small number of people who do have a problem are always the ones who shout the loudest. You don't see anybody creating threads and causing commotion when their device is behaving like it should, do you? No, you don't.
Just because there are some faulty devices out there in the world, and people are making a completely half-assed attempt at measuring the percentage of faulty devices (people with zero actual data gathering experience or knowledge), does not mean there's a real problem with the One. All the loud-mouths with their whining only create an illusion that there's a problem, and all the gullible people soak it up like a sponge.
@in_core, buy the phone, you won't regret it.

That's not a problem with oneplus. They're a start up company and for their first year, they're doing quite a good job. Sure it's not perfect with the invite system but that's due to their production.
The same could be said about the nexus devices, it's only cheap in selective markets. It's not just the oneplus one.
I'm not saying that removable battery and remove storage is not needed. Sure it's nice to have but let's take a step back.
Removable storage: you're given 64GB of internal storage. The other edition is 16GB which isn't really produced as oneplus is producing 64gb due to a popular demand. $299 vs $349. That's a difference of $50. Take a look at other companies and see how they would charge for a extra internal storage for 16 to 64. Oneplus could have cheap out and gave us 32gb for 349 and 64gb for $449. Anyways to get to the point, the phone has 64gb of internal storage, storage is not a problem what so ever. Would it be nice to have a sdcard? Sure but it's not a deal breaker.
Oneplus is already selling the phone cheap as it is, they're barely making a profit and you want them to put more features after they gave you 64gb? Come on now.
Removable battery: technically any phone has a removable battery if you just take it out. Oneplus had swapstyle covers that shows you that. The back of the phone isn't the easiest thing to take off but it's possible to do. From a design perspective, it'd be pretty difficult to have the sand stone black and back design that the oneplus already have to include a removable back that is easy.
The same idea of removable storage can be applied to the battery. Would it be nice to have? Yes. But if it doesn't have it, it's not a deal breaker as we're already given 64gb of internal storage and 3100 mah battery. Oneplus one has the best battery life on the phone market right now. At its given price point of $349 the oneplus one is a steal if you received a invite. Given some effort, you can get a invite within hours on various social networks / forums.
if you are on a budget I will say the OnePlus is the best bang for your buck. Honestly like others have mentioned you will only hear about the bad and not enough good stories but I will be honest with you. I am nowhere disappointed in my purchase of this phone and hopefully neither will your if you purchase it.
Alot of things are overrated in my opinion. No need to remove a battery if the one you havve last you all day. No need to have extra storage if you have a good data plan and use the cloud. I am coming from a 16gb N4 that I placed all my music in Google Music and my apps in dropbox, drive and other various cloud storage.
Dont fill your phone up with crap and believe me this phone with camera, storage and best battery in the game will make you a happy individual

I think it depends which of the phones you can get your hands on. After my Nexus 5 has been replaced 3 times under warranty I am starting to care more and more about that kind of support as well.

i know you are right. but it's that i have ben talking to a developer. and he didnt recomande me the phone. (guess he had a bad one) and asked him again 1month later how its going he sayed don' buy u aint gonna love it....
that the thing. i know he knows what he says but yeah, xiaomi mi3 is a bit boring. i mean 5" no lte. and only miui or a AOSP rom. noting more. cause no kernel sources yet...
and the oneplus is almost the same size as the xiaomi (xiaomi mi3 is as big as a xperia z1. just a bit smaller)
so yeah. the thing is. okay maybe i will get lucky but i dont like to know that maybe im gonna get a phone with touchscreen isues.. i hate that. thats going to make me smash the phone.... i already had problems with touchscreen and i almost trew the phone on the ground.
so if i get one i want to be sure i will have a touchscreeen that works. and doesn't make me mad!

Don't tell people not to buy the phone off the back of one guy's bad experience. If you do some research you'll find that touchscreen issues have been solved with a ts driver update (for those very few people that had problems).

Depends on what price you're getting in.

you know for these 2-3 years, i didnt bother to see the smartphone market,
i got no reason to change to a new one.. haha
Depends on you and what you want. If you want high-end camera or excellent battery performance then nope it is not. But it has average even good camera-you dont miss any details or photos can be used for social media easily- and this battery can last you for 1 day. Not official but with custom ROMS you can use very smooth and flawless noguat which is the last and newest version of the android. This specs has got me and i am very happy with my OPO and 3gigs of ram really gives you what you want. But if you want official rom support, really high end camera and high end battery life or high and gaming experience or newest SoT well this phone is not for you. Think and know what you want, then you can find your choice.

Honestly, in 2017 if you are out in the market, OnePlus One shouldn't even be an option.
Its dated, and not at par with current mid range devices. I would advise you against getting a One even though I love this phone.
It just doesn't make sense to get it 3 years after its launch.

You didnt even read it.
He said he can get it at a good price. If he can get it at a good price, this phone is (which is amazing IMO) very usable in 2017.
The only BUT is the camera...but even then the camera is pretty damn good.
Once a Oneplus 4 comes out with IP68, Ill finally drop my Oneplus One.

There isn't a single rational reason to update this phone (despite what the gear heads claim). With the right custom rom battery lasts for two days (try slim7 or nitrogen os), roms are fluid, apps open quickly and camera is on par with other cams of this size. Low light photography is a pain, and will be for several more years for all sensors of this size. Even 3/4 size consumer cameras out there struggle with this, so it won't be any better for long time.

Agreed.
Overall this phone is wonderful. Rough, tough, durable, great battery life, size, quick, good adequate camera (with the right app).
I can't kill this phone (physically or by mucking around with its OS, KitKat to Nougat).
My teen kids loved this phone's looks and performance but hated its size (when I first got it they each took it for a month test run) had they also made this in a 4.7 version, this would have been their phone of choice.
Upon this phone's demise, my next phone will likely be the Oneplus 3T.

My only reason would be IP68 and I do miss OIS sometimes for certain camera shots.
But besides that...this phone is still relevant in 2017, 3 years after its release.

I have opo from 3 years. If you can buy one i think battery is already dated so the usage will be over limited . for 150 dollars go to xiaomi
It is still a great phone. But battery is aging and is really hard to find "genuine" replacement (after 2 years I am getting around 4h SOT before 6h-9h). Same goes for Back Cover mine is showing that 2 years of using without case and it is impossible to buy replacement. So I am going to wait for OP4 and if OP4 won't by for me I will buy used OP3 for cheap.
So I am getting sick of the battery life of this device and charging twice a day just to get by... the QC helps but it isn't always a viable option for someone who is on the road/travels a lot. I am probably going to go back to my Moto G 2015 for the time being as I could get a full days use most of the time on a single charge and just selling my MXPE.
But now the question comes up as what to replace it with... Moto G 5th gen, Blu Pure XR, ZTE Axon 7 Mini, or ???
My requirements are simple, or so I think...
1) 4+ hours SOT, preferably 5+, in mixed signal environment of WiFi/LTE/3G and sometimes without the best signal strength (for reference, I currently get about 2.5 hours on MXPE)
2) 5.2"-5.7" screen with 1080p minimum resolution
3) Stock Android, "near" stock, or simple UI (no TouchWiz, EMUI, ZenUI, or other bloated UI) that allows easy use of replacement launcher
4) 64GB internal storage or 32GB internal+microSD
5) 3GB or more of RAM
6) Full AT&T network compatibility (GSM 850/1900 and LTE Band 2/4/5/12/17 and optionally 29/30)
7) Nougat or Marshmallow with a Nougat upgrade "guaranteed"

9) Dual band WiFi - 2.4 & 5Ghz

Would be nice, but not essential...

What else fits these requirements that I am not considering?
I believe the one phone that comes to mind that would fit most of your requirements is the Axon. I took a break from the MXPE (when it flew off my roof and died a horrible death in a rain storm) and had the Axon 7 (normal size) for about a month. You will get NEAR 4 hours of SoT, a qhd screen, 5.5 inches, relatively light for metal body. Unlockable bootloader and decent dev for it, last I checked. Things that bothered me/ pissed me off were that DTTW was laggy and slow, the actual cell service seemed to be really bad, possibly because of the full metal body phone, and the biggest annoyance - no backlit capacitive buttons, so you were left sort of blind in the dark trying to hit buttons. There is also no way through the build.prop to enable the on-screen buttons to bypass the issue at night, last I checked.
LG V20 could be an option too since it has a bootloader unlock now, 3.5-4.5 hours of SoT. I think it has a bottom bezel speaker though, which is a little weird, and as always the LG software has complaints. The dev is good enough to get around that though.
I'm in the same boat as you though. I've been looking pretty hard to find a new phone and the V20 is the only one I am really considering right now.
Get the OnePlus 3T it meets all your needs I get easily 6 to 7 HR sot

This phone has been a little disappointing. It's good, but definitely not great. It's a night and day difference from the Galaxy S3 I was using, but I wish I had held out a little longer for the SD 820 phones instead of buying in 2015.
It sounds like you've already got a pretty inclusive list for phones that are sold in the US and meet your requirements.
I just checked swappa, and if you're willing to go used, the OnePlus 3 is starting to get down towards the price point you're looking for. It has the same size battery as the MXP, and between the more efficient SoC than this godawful 808/810 generation and an FHD AMOLED I'd think you should get better screen on time out of it. It's a OnePlus so it has loads of good development, so you'll have all kinds of kernel/rom/tweaking available to really squeeze every erg out of it.

If you happen to be SUPER interested in the V20, I have seen some go for like 310-320 on Swappa in good to mint condition. You gotta hound the seller though and keep track of it all damn day for when the price drops. Not an awesome experience but I'm waiting for the same thing myself.

I'm not really interested... TBH, my experience with non-Nexus LG Android devices has been... well... lets just say less then wonderful.
Although I would have to say that the LG enV from years ago probably ranks up there as my favorite phone of all time, back when you could actually get DAYS of usage out of a cell phone on a single charge. I remember I would charge it twice a week. lol

Yea I agree. After my terrible experience with the buggy LG G4, I'm very skeptical about going back again. At the same time I am running out of companies to try out! Haha. Gotta circle back eventually, especially on Verizon.

NEVER AGAIN!!! I refuse to drop $140 plus taxes and fees (realistically $160) for the service level I get now for $72 per month. Plus the limitations on devices, I would have to buy at least one new phone and/or go under contract. Nope, not happening. (Can you tell I have a grudge against Verizon, lol)
I would look around swappa for a OnePlus 3 or 3t it's worth it no bugs lag free and monthly updates it's already on nougat 7.1.1 and the beta builds they offer are great as well and development is great lots of greats ROMs and kernels and unlocking bootloader will not void warranty
TBH...I think you will have a hard time meeting all of your requirements right now. The market looks pretty dismal which is very unfortunate. I personally will hold out a little longer. I'm really looking hard at what Nokia/HMD are coming up with and hoping their roadmap for US devices includes a mid range device soon. So far their line up seems decent and if they are true to their word about expedient updates for Android, and they will sell devices with unlockable bootloaders at decent prices, I'll be sold.

Like @acejavelin stated, Samsung is not an option, and I agree with him. Yes they have great hardware for the most part, but a less powerful processor running vanilla, our near vanilla Android will run just as well considering the lack of heavy handed UX. I will admit the phone looks great hardware and looks wise, but I personally don't like the look and feel of Samsung TW.

Sammie's are to bloated... Every Samsung devices we have ever had has been problematic... Hope you enjoy yours though but I would never spend that kind of money on a phone.
I have a moto g5 plus as well, its pretty good. It's fast and smooth. Screen and camera are good too, but obviously not as good as the X style.
Yes mxpe battery sucks. I have to charge 2-3 times a day and am not even a heavy user. I know its more than your actual budget but better wait, save a bit more and probably the price will drop also and go for a OP 3T.

there are barely very less phones which have dual front facing speakers.. market has got very saturated.. all look for flagship but they just don't think that having a good speakers is also a part of flagship project!

Nougat can't "fix" our battery issue... Radio and display panel are hardware issues and that's where 75% of all battery drain is. It isn't even issues, it's just how much power they use normally. The SD808's radios are terribly inefficient, and the display panel uses more power than some small towns. If you think Nougat is going to noticably improve active use time, your kidding yourself.
To be honest, I might just pull my old Nexus 5 out if the drawer and switch to it... The battery life can't be much worse.
The sound aspect is less important. FF speakers are nice, but as long as I can hear a YouTube video in an average room and turn the ringer up enough u don't care.
I bought the MXPE as an upgrade to my G 2015 and it was on sale for under $250, and for the most part it is, I just didn't realize how bad the battery was, it is easily half of my G.
I got Axon 7 after X and can't be happier. I've had the A7 since August. Has the front speakers i wanted, nice beautiful Samsung screen. Battery is definitely better then X. Software was buggy at the beginning but they have improved it a lot. Axon 7 has been getting a lot of updates, doesn't mean it'll continue, we were the 1st ones to receive 7.0 with the exception of Google devices, and we are the only ones so far (afaik) to receive 7.1.1 with also the exception of Google devices.
It has its flaws but i love the phone. For the money you can't beat it. It's on sale now on newegg for $330.
MY PERSONAL COMPLAINTS & REVIEW OF THE HUAWEI MATE 20 X
This is my personal take of the huawei mate 20X which I provide as a cautionary note to potential buyers. This is an honest critique of a phone I owned for little over a month. For comparison sake I own the samsung a70 and used that to gauge the phone's overall value. Last month I bought it going in with the mindset that the big screen and its features would be cool as hell. I was wrong.
Online I purchased it for $590. My first impression when I unboxed it was I felt horrified. The phone is monster big. It made me a bit uneasy to think that the heavy weight coupled with its sheer size would make for a perfect shattered screen in time. As I handled it I was on edge that it would fall which made me feel somewhat insecure. But after a while I got used to the size and it fit my pockets although the top protrudes out a bit. After toying with it I felt I had to always be aware that it might fall so I used extra precaution while it was on my person, but it was no biggie.
BATTERY
The first thing that constantly bothered me about the phone was the battery which is 5000 mah. The first thing I made sure to do was to put this baby into airplane mode, turn off bt and location and just keep wifi on. Also, I made sure of turning off background activity in the settings on the grand majority of apps not to mention uninstalling unwanted apps.
You might at first glance think, "wow 5000 mah, amazing I'll buy it right away!" Hold your horses buddy. Just because a phone has a big battery doesnt necessarily mean it will perform like a big battery champ. An example of this is when I charged the phone to 100% one morning. I read email, went on youtube for 10 minutes, surfed the net and made one call that lasted 2 minutes. This whole session lasted 20 minutes. The battery drained to 87%, I kid you not! Another example is when I charged it to 100% one night. After 3 hours of idleness, not picking it up or doing anything to it, the battery read a disconcerting 96%. How in god's name is that possible on 5000 mah after I disabled many apps and killed many more running in the background?? By comparison my samsung a70 which has a 4500 mah battery beats the mate 20X big time in battery. After I put the a70 through the ringer with the above same session in the same amount of time the battery showed a pleasing 97%. A user on xda commented that his mate 20x's battery is slightly (keyword, slightly) better than his samsung s9 which has a 4100 mah battery. Now youre seeing the bigger picture.
UI
The UI is the 2nd worst thing about this phone. It looks like Ice Cream - heavily outdated and disappointing. Though it navigates fast through menus, the app drawer cant be accessed by swiping from the bottom as in most phones today with Pie which is installed on this phone out the box. Even though you have an option for that feature its clumsy and not pretty.
SCREEN RESOLUTION & COLOR
Another bone of contention is the screen resolution. It looks good. But when compared to modern phones like my a70 which is very sharp it falls short. Of course the screen is large which "thins out" pixel density making it less crisp. Thats understandable. But it disappoints when juxtaposing it with sharper phones.
Color is not well calibrated even though it's set to vivid by default. Red apparently dominates the other colors which makes the reds stand out too much. Perhaps a tweak in the settings would do the trick? But with a phone debuted at $1000 you would think huawei would have the experience by now to fix that. Completely inexcusable. The samsung a70's vivid color depth blows the mate 20x out of the water.
SOUND
The sound volume and quality are quite loud and amazing respectively. The best I've ever heard in any smartphone. Huawei did a good job in this dept. But there's no way to toggle dolby atmos off unfortunately. Battery charging is fast, no complaints. Stereo is a huge plus!
GAMES AND VIDEO
For some unknown twisted reason, given the above complaints, playing games on this phone lasted a long time in battery. Playing asphalt 9 for 15 minutes drained only 4 - 5%. Same thing with playing videos. An hour of youtube drained only 6%. Very good but strange given its battery drains in other areas.
OVERALL & MY ADVICE
My great question in all this is, why the hell arent people complaining about these issues?? Battery is not efficient, the UI looks ugly and feels way outdated, the colors are off, resolution isnt as sharp as on other phones and its a bit heavy. To be perfectly honest, with all these faults the phone is worth $460, not $650 which is the lowest price as a new item selling on amazon at the time of this writing. Without any of these issues the phone would be perfect.
For those considering buying this phone take great heed of the aforementioned before you fork over 7 tall bills for it that later on you might regret. Dont be easily fooled by rave reviews of owners of the phone on xda either. Many will exaggerate it because theyre blinded by its large size. Likewise, dont be easily fooled by tech reviews elsewhere like those found on zdnet. Some of them are actually written by paid reviewers who will intentionally gloss over a product, ignoring its faults to satisfy ad revenue.

I haven't owned a Samsung since the S8+ - I loved it, but the battery was nowhere near what they said it was for me. I wonder if it was because I have to use a VPN 80% of the time to access Google services. (in China - Lucky/unlucky me). How do I know that you are not some sort of Samsung plant? ok - I have no idea why this is the way it is for you. I have NEVER experienced a battery experience like this in sooooo ****ing many phones. So many times that famous African American on youtube - you know who - would tell me that 'this' phone's battery life was the best. And so many times I'd get let down (never more so than the Huawei Nexus 6P. Damn I loved that phone, but damn that battery sucked). I have NEVER been more impressed by a smart phone. I get a day and a bit an dI am a HEAVY user. Not sure why your phone life is ****, but I wish I knew why.

I actually really like EMUI despite my bashing in numerous threads. I especially like the gestures. I am even unsure if I could go back to Nova ... but the fact I can't, ****s me off more than anything. The worst and second-worst and third-worst thing about this phone is the lack of accessibility to a launcher. Damn -that is frustrating and I want to elbow all the EVR dudes right in the GD nose for their insistence that the phone is awesome!

You're probably right, but I couldn't give a toss about this as I mostly use Bluetooth ear. Speakers have been handy once ort twice, but essentially, I have never used the jack. Also I have no clue what the **** is Atmos - I am a philistine when it comes to musique.

Think you are right with this. I seem to be able to set my son up on math prodigy and t4each your monster how to read and it lasts a zillion times longer than when I use the old huawei 6P.

It is worth it, in my opinion if you live outside of China and can get the EVA version and you don't need heaps of mem or a dual sim. I need a dual sim, heaps of mem, and I live in China. Therefore it has completely sucked owning the most amazing phone EVER.

Nah dude ... It is a solid phone. I also got my wife off Apple with the mate 20 pro. These are the best phones - period. Sady though, big business and government dictate otherwise.

That was me who mentioned about the battery drain being slightly better on the mate 20X , it was in relation to my s10+.
The S10+ screen is smaller at 6.4", screen on time battery drain would be greater with a larger panel regardless of battery capacity as we all know. It's all relative.
My ideal goal is 0.9 - 0.4% per hour idle drain or less. Which I get on the Mate 20X , similar to my s10+. The mate 20X larger battery provides greater in between charges when device is in idle and screen off and a slightly better SOT time with screen on than my S10+.
As we all know battery drain % has nothing to do with battery capacity. Drain is drain, regardless. I use GSAM and Accubattery Pro on all my devices to measure SOT and idle drain amongst other things. One other important point is that battery drain on same given device can be completely different to someone elses same device. There are many variables that come into play in regards to battery drain. Hence why there are users of s10+ devices that complain their battery drains faster whereby others post 10 hours plus screen on time. The S10 plus is a mere example, change the device name and it's the same scenario on other device forums on XDA.
As for YouTube reviews for phones in general, I've came to find out a while ago that most are fake. YouTube influencers are given the device for free for favourable reviews.

What would I or samsung gain from a phone made for the asian market if I were a secret samsung agent based in USA on an english-based website? The samsung a70 is the only phone at my disposal with which to compare the mate 20x.

Did you actually read or just scan through the battery paragraph? I specifically explained how I set up my phone. Battery life again compared to the a70 leaves much to be desired. Why it went from 100% to 96% in 3 hours with everything turned off is completely inexcusable. As for the black guy in youtube, we dont know how HE set up his phone. Keep in mind that the mate 20x mustve been his 1st 5000 mah battery phone which came out last year at the time of his review when very few phones within that same period had the same mah capacity. This is why you cant judge a phone without comparing it to other phones. I actually tested the phone with the a70 on several occasions, being careful to take notes of observed changes in battery. Just to let you know, two phones from different companies with the same battery capacity will ALWAYS perform differently in terms of battery. This is irrefutable fact.

I cant qualify your response as to the UI since you prefer a 1971 chevy when we're driving 2018 ferraris. What I can comment on is that I think the L29 version can install launchers. But I'm not 100% sure on that so dont quote me for assurance.

Never said it wasnt a solid phone. Its just not a perfectly solid 10 out of 10. Its plagued with issues serious companies arent foolish enough to make which should have been ironed out before huawei released it. Premium should be premium especially at premium price, no excuses.
Chinese phone makers are not in the habit of being keen on quality control and are slow to correct mistakes. They think they can just slap together a phone with high end specs through cheap labor as their corp revenue goal, throw it in the consumer's face like a doggy treat and expect them to bite. Thats not how you make customers happy. You keep them satisfied through constant and consistent quality control which the chinese have historically lacked for a long time in their product cycles. But admittingly they are getting better at it; in that sense I give them credit where credit is due. But china is still no korea at least not yet. The mate 20x issues are to the mate 20x what chinese companies are to customers. If china would have made a strong effort to make phones amazing in all respects they could have single-handedly put a major dent in apple, lg and samsung by now.

Oh yes I remember now, it was you. Appreciate that info you confirmed. However I mistakenly said it was your s9 when it was actually your s10+. I stand corrected.
As we all know battery drain % has nothing to do with battery capacity. Drain is drain, regardless. I use GSAM and Accubattery Pro on all my devices to measure SOT and idle drain amongst other things. One other important point is that battery drain on same given device can be completely different to someone elses same device. There are many variables that come into play in regards to battery drain. Hence why there are users of s10+ devices that complain their battery drains faster whereby others post 10 hours plus screen on time.

Thats exactly what I surmised in my review. Battery capacity means nothing. It doesnt matter how big a battery is; its how efficiently the phone utilizes the voltage and how the software is able to tie in everything together, hardware and software wise.
As for YouTube reviews for phones in general, I've came to find out a while ago that most are fake. YouTube influencers are given the device for free for favourable reviews.

This is my personal take of the huawei mate 20X which I provide as a cautionary note to potential buyers. This is an honest critique of a phone I owned for little over a month. For comparison sake I own the samsung a70 and used that to gauge the phone's overall value. Last month I bought it going in with the mindset that the big screen and its features would be cool as hell. I was wrong.

I haven't owned a Samsung since the S8+ - I loved it, but the battery was nowhere near what they said it was for me. I wonder if it was because I have to use a VPN 80% of the time to access Google services. (in China - Lucky/unlucky me). How do I know that you are not some sort of Samsung plant? A70 can't be as awesome as this phone, can it?
Online I purchased it for $590. My first impression when I unboxed it was I felt horrified. The phone is monster big. It made me a bit uneasy to think that the heavy weight coupled with its sheer size would make for a perfect shattered screen in time. As I handled it I was on edge that it would fall which made me feel somewhat insecure. But after a while I got used to the size and it fit my pockets although the top protrudes out a bit. After toying with it I felt I had to always be aware that it might fall so I used extra precaution while it was on my person, but it was no biggie.

BATTERY
The first thing that constantly bothered me about the phone was the battery which is 5000 mah. The first thing I made sure to do was to put this baby into airplane mode, turn off bt and location and just keep wifi on. Also, I made sure of turning off background activity in the settings on the grand majority of apps not to mention uninstalling unwanted apps.
ok - I have no idea why this is the way it is for you. I have NEVER experienced a battery experience like this in sooooo ****ing many phones. So many times that famous African American on youtube - you know who - would tell me that 'this' phone's battery life was the best. And so many times I'd get let down (never more so than the Huawei Nexus 6P. Damn I loved that phone, but damn that battery sucked). Anyway, Now-a-days I can accidentally leave my camera or torch on and it DOES NOT MATTER. This thing is a battery wizard ... for me. THe AL00 in china with Veeeeepeeeee-ENNNN
You might at first glance think, "wow 5000 mah, amazing I'll buy it right away!" Hold your horses buddy. Just because a phone has a big battery doesnt necessarily mean it will perform like a big battery. An example of this is when I charged the phone to 100% one morning. I read email, went on youtube for 10 minutes, surfed the net and made one call that lasted 2 minutes. This whole session lasted 20 minutes. The battery drained to 87%, I kid you not! Another example is when I charged it to 100% one night. After 3 hours of idleness, not picking it up or doing anything to it, the battery read a disconcerting 96%. How in god's name is that possible on 5000 mah after I disabled many apps and killed many more running in the background?? My samsung a70 which has a 4500 mah battery beats the mate 20X big time in battery. After I put the a70 through the ringer with the above same session in the same amount of time the battery showed 97%. A user on xda commented that his mate 20x's battery is slightly (keyword, slightly) better than his samsung s9 which has a 4100 mah battery. Now youre seeing the bigger picture.
I have NEVER been more impressed by a smart phone. I get a day and a bit an dI am a HEAVY user. Not sure why your phone life is ****, but I wish I knew why.
UI
The UI is the 2nd worst thing about this phone. It looks heavily outdated like Ice Cream or Kit Kat. Very disappointing. Though it navigates fast through menus, the app drawer cant be accessed by swiping from the bottom. Even though you have an option for that feature its

SCREEN RESOLUTION
Another bone of contention is the screen resolution. It looks good. But when compared to modern phones like my a70 which is very sharp it falls short. Of course the screen is large which "thins out" pixel density making it less crisp. Thats understandable. But it disappoints when juxtaposing it to sharper phones.

SOUND & BATTERY
The sound volume and quality are quite loud and amazing respectively. The best I've ever come across in any smartphone. Huawei did a good job in this dept. But there's no way to toggle dolby atmos off unfortunately. Battery charging is fast, no complaints. Stereo is a huge plus!
You're probably right, but I couldn't give a toss about this as I mostly use Bluetooth ear. Speakers have been handy once ort twice, but essentially, I have never used the jack. Also I have no clue what the **** is Atmos - I am a philistine when it comes to musique.
GAMES AND VIDEO
For some unknown twisted reason, given the above complaints, playing games on this phone lasted a long time. Playing asphalt 9 for 15 minutes drained only 4 - 5%. Same thing with playing videos. An hour of youtube drained only 6%. Very good but strange given its battery drains in other areas.
Think you are right with this. I seem to be able to set my son up on math prodigy and t4each your monster how to read and it lasts a zillion times longer than when I use the old huawei 6P.
OVERALL & MY ADVICE clumsy and not pretty.
My great question in all this is, why the hell arent people complaining about these issues?? Battery is not efficient, the UI looks ugly and feels way outdated, resolution isnt as sharp as on other phones and its a bit heavy. To be perfectly honest, with all these faults the phone is worth $460, not $650 which is the lowest price as a new item on amazon at the time of this writing. Without any of these issues the phone would be perfect.
It is worth it, in my opinion if you live outside of China and can get the EVA version and you don't need heaps of mem or a dual sim. I need a dual sim, heaps of mem, and I live in China. Therefore it has completely sucked owning the most amazing phone EVER.
For those considering buying this phone take great heed of the aforementioned before you fork over 7 tall bills for it that later on you might regret. Dont be easily fooled by rave reviews of owners of the phone on xda. Many will exaggerate it because theyre blinded by its large size. Likewise, dont be easily fooled by tech reviews elsewhere like those found on zdnet. Some of them are actually written by paid reviewers who will intentionally gloss over a product, ignoring its faults to satisfy ad revenue.
Nah dude ... It is a solid phone. I also got my wife off Apple with the mate 20 pro. These are the best phones - period. Sady though, big business and government dictate otherwise.

Did you actually read or just scan through the battery paragraph? I specifically explained how I set up my phone. Battery life again compared to the a70 leaves much to be desired. I'm both frustrated and disappointed. Honestly I wanted to make the mate 20x my main driver that I planned to replace my a70. But huawei decided for me to keep my a70.
The honor 8x max is a good big screened phone. But problems with installed google services like the playstore keep me from considering buying it.
Looks like I'll stick to my a70 until I see a better contender with a bigger screen, hopefully one with no issues that would otherwise prompt me to open a thread to complain about.
Wouldnt say we're the 'odd couple' since we're both not as frustrated with each other as with that one thing bothering us, the mate 20x. We're more like Frasier and Niles.

Max version hasn't got any USA T-Mobile LTE bands.
The none Max version has some T-Mobile LTE bands though.

Very sad to hear that. Another example of huawei disappointing potential consumers. The fact that this will hurt them in revenue makes me happy. If they dont take this as a lesson I dont know what will.

You mustve picked up a defective phone. I didnt have any issues with bt. Hate saying this but try a factory reset.

The Pixel 5 just has everything I want in a "phone".
It's still fast enough that I don't get annoyed using it.

Battery life is probably better than on the P7, but no idea, but I'm still getting wonderful SOT.

Completely agree! I jumped ship to Pixel 5 after a decade of exclusively buying Samsung Galaxy series. Perfect size and has more than enough power for my needs. If only they released another phone of the same size. If only.
Bought a Pixel 7 last week... currently thinking about returning it and keep my P5...
I'm in the market for a Pixel 5. For all the reasons @andybones outlined, plus as a backup. I got the 7 and like it more than 6. But now there's something new and ugly to be paranoid about with stories about shattering camera glass. Taking into account lame fingerprint readers, new Pixels seem to have lowest glass bidder written all over them.
I found a used "mint" condition P5 on Swappa.

I've had a Pixel 5 for a couple days now. First thing I noticed is that SIM unlock happens instantly where as 6 and 7 have to think about it for a few seconds. Same with wi-fi and cell connections. It may not be significant but 5's radio is definitely snappier on start up and no waiting for status bar icons. I'm sure a new Tensor has a more complex job than an older Snapdragon, but simpler is what I'm going for.
The phone shipped with Android 12, I flashed 13, now I'm thinking about taking it all the way back to 11. Any caveats I need to know about that?

Nice review.
I've been using mine also for a few days.
It's great. Perfect condition.
Only thing is battery capacity I'm not sure where it's at. On my old 5 it was at like 90% and i was getting easily 8-10 hour SOT.
Im on my 3rd charge and I got about 6 hour SOT and accurately said 73% battery health. But I'm praying it just needs time but we'll see. This charge is doing a little better. I was used to getting an hour /10% battery..
But for $198 perfect condition P5 I'm quite happy. It should easily last me until the P8. Which I'm hoping will have a smaller close to P5 size.
I used the P7 in store for first time and yes it is awesome. But I would of bought new and it would be about $540. So I think I made a god choice. I'm also hoping google does good trade in deals again next year.. though I really do need a backup device.
Ohh man I rode A11 until A13 came out. Completely skipped A12. I used crDrood A11 ROM, and it was very stable.
I don't think I could go back though.

I read that Pixel 8 will be small. It would be nice if it also trended away from a glass back, but that's probably wishful thinking.
I don't have a clear picture of my P5's battery health either. So far it seems good enough, definitely not bad. I did a second charge today. Mine is in really nice shape too, so hopefully this means the battery had an easy life before I got it.

I'm totally with you on this. I was pondering whether to buy a P7 or not for absolutely ages, but gave in and bought a unopened sealed one for £400, played with it for about 3 hours in my house and could not work out what all the hype is about with the P7, I noticed very little difference between it and my P5, possibly the camera, but the camera on my P5 is perfect for what I use it for. And I totally love the physical size of my P5. I did like the phone to phone transfer using the cables, it transferred absolutely everything, including all my short cuts to various websites, Forums etc. They have not yet mastered keeping the same ringtones etc, but I was still impressed. Anyway, cut a long story short, I have now got the P7 out of my head, sold it for exactly what I paid for it and I am keeping my bullet proof 100% reliable P5 until possibly the P7a or P8, depending on size of phone, but if Google don't do a phone at 6.1" or less, I'll possibly have to switch over to Samsung.
I just ordered up a Pixel 7, free upgrade and my Pixel 5 is showing it's age. I'm not the easiest on my stuff and working on a diamond drill doesn't help my cause at all
P5 is the last good phone ever made.
If I were you, I'd get another one while you can still find it, in case you break it, loose it etc.
All the new phones are huge now, Pixel 5 is the smallest.
And cases are made of fragile glass on almost all phones now, on Pixel is aluminium and you can still wireless charge because of the hole in the middle!
And fingerprint sensor is actually usable on P5 because it's where it should be, not on the side/buttons, under the screen and other awkward places like on most phones.
And you get quite a lot of RAM that should make the phone last years.
Only down-side on P5 for me is the big screen resolution. I find anything above 720p a waste of battery life, because there is no visual difference for the eyes. But battery life is not that bad, if you only use it casually you can get 2-3 days of battery life
Just wondering, has anyone noticed issues with Android 13 compared to Android 11, on P5?
Usually I avoid updates like plague, I disable them completely and keep apps until they don't run anymore and force me to update them. What is annoying on P5 is that every few days it shows up a popup prompting me to update Android and it's only a matter of time until I click OK by mistake
@andybones, no reason to upgrade if you like the hardware/firmware you got and its fulfilling its mission. Constant firmware upgrades/updates aren't needed for Android 9 or higher in my opinion. Replace batteries as needed... easy living.

My previous phone was OnePlus 7 Pro, and OnePlus could replace battery under the warranty and free od charge during two year warranty for the device. I don't know how it is now after merge with Oppo.
How about Google? Battery replacement is done under the warranty just like it was with OnePlus or Google will charge some money? If so, do you know how much?

No, but probably not that bad. I run Samsung N10+'s and I doubt it's worse than them. Watch a tear down vid. I've gotten one of these done for $50, next one I'll probably do myself.
Regardless replace the battery when it drops to 80% of its original capacity. Just routine maintenance, no big fuss.

Yesterday I saw ebay deal for Pixel 5 128GB for $110 and have ordered it, should be a decent ugrade I think, at least I'll try newest Android.
I'm completely with you guys. I love and live my P5. The P6 of my mom feels so bulky in comparison, more like a brick. I also don't get why there is no political or scientific pressure/argument for lighter phones <150 g instead of 200+ g. It has to be more healthy for our wrists.
In addition I had some experience with battery capacity and aging of it.
If you have root access or able to use some terminal executions (e.g. adb), you can read out your remaining full charge capacity of your Pixel.
These number will give you a scope of what's going on, but will not be accurate.
For my case, I use root to limit max charging state (at 75 %) and shut of below 20 %. Also I can limit the charging current by software. In all day usage I stay between 60 and 50 %, as I have a wireless charger on every desk at work and home.
So long story short. I was getting my battery replaced by Google in a case of warranty (I was getting a entirely new unit as replacement because I shuttered my camera glass/lense.
The bms of the battery counts charging cycles and remaining full charge capacity (see file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent).
All I can say is that this number of remaining capacity (health state) is quite manipulative. Brand new capacity was 4100 mAh with 3 cycles. Now I have 3500 mAh after 218 cycles in 11 month's. If I would charge my P5 now several times to 100 % SOC and drain it to zero, the bms would learn and this count of 3531 mAh would climb again to much more then that.
For long term reasons I will not do several 100-0-100 SOC cycles for you. You all can imagine that it will hurt the lithium cells more than it will help to know the exact figure.
All in all I can ask a friend with a P5 which readouts he will get, he doesn't use this battery charging restrictions.
Btw, if your remaining capacity will drop below 80 % in warranty time, Google will replace your battery for free. Otherwise you can't initiate a changing of battery by yourself at Google, not even for some fees.
But if you really concerned, there are original batteries to order here in Germany, disassembly process is not that hard to do.
In my opinion don't take too much concerns about your battery. A friend of me has a OnePlus 6 since Release (close to 5 years ago) and charges every night to 100 % with a old Sony 7,5 W charger. He is on its original equipped battery and still has enough SOT for 1 day usage and criticises it's battery life some time ago. But as we know, there is no alternative to older, smaller smartphones without glass backside as our P5 oder OP6.

P.S. I'm still on A11 for design reasons, I don't like the bubble UI of A12+. Where is my usable workspace left? Notifications area and app drawer specially and where would my WiFi on/off toggle switch gone? What was wrong with this dedicated button to get rid of it in A12?
Edit: like I said, I did a single 100%-0%-100% cycle and the bms recognised this in better trained capacity. It jumped from 3531 to 3623 mAh (compare with table above).
So don't take this numbers too serious, as it it the same battery lithium cell and the numbers are all over the place.
Friends i heard pixel 5 has heating issues, how is it on newer versions of android and can we balance it with custom roms. I like compact phones and can't really find one these days in decent budget. I am planning to buy a P5 hoping custom rom support would last for few more years but little concerned about heating. Is it natural for P5 to heat or can we lower it with better roms?, ur response would help. Thanks dears.

I have this phone for over year now mostly running on custom ROMs (currently CrDroid v7.25, Android 11). A lot of games, YouTube, a ton of phone calls etc. and I haven't notice any issues with heating. Of course, phone is warmer during heavier games or something, as it should be, but nothing extreme.
