Question Still on November Security patch - Google Pixel 7 Pro

I have a Pixel 7 Pro purchased through T-Mobile. 100% stock, no modifications. Google Play System update is Nov. 1. I am still on the November security patch. Attempting the system update results in ""Your system is up to date" Is this a google problem, TMobile slow update or a phone problem?

T-Mobile I'd imagine. Just use Pixel Flasher or https://flash.android.com

I joined the beta program

How is it? Stable enough to daily drive? I was stuck on the Nov. 22 patch as well until I sideloaded via ADB last night.

Nov 1 is the latest Play System Update afaik, at least thats what the QPR shows....

Google is having problems

This is one of those moments where it's not you it's them is actually true and not gaslighting . Play Updates are not rolling out properly

Seems you are not alone.
T-Mobile is running way behind on Google Pixel security updates
Timely updates are supposed to be a prime Pixel perk

Yeah I am on December update very annoyed with Google nothing has changed

That sucks and should not be the Pixel experience. I would call T-Mobile and ask them why you are on an old update?
I have had decent updates so far but would be rather upset if I had a security update that was older than other OEM as that is part of the reason for getting a Pixel.

Sign up for Beta and you'll get QPR2 Beta 2. In my experience, it is much more fluid and responsive than previous builds. It fixes the scrolling issues and seems to have improved battery compared to the December update.

My wife's P7 still is on Dec update and says it's up to date. I manually flash and root mine, but not about to go to that work for her phone.

Can't you just adb sideload update.zip without having to even unlock the bootloader?

Google provides the means to update it yourself manually easily if you're not willing to wait for your turn. Their tools aren't even that complicated to use. I don't understand the big deal when you have manufacturers like Samsung that can take 3-6 months or longer to update between major version releases, Motorola that updates whenever they feel like it and only gives 2 years of major version updates, and OnePlus that's always behind like 2 months in security updates.

I could, but it's my wife's phone so I don't want to mess with it. I'd have to pry it out of her hands first.

If she's complaining about it, 10 minutes in your hands beats you hearing about it for however long it takes for the update server to decide it's her turn.

Also mine show November as last play service update (I'm on the beta). Italian unlocked phone

Nov is the latest still for play system. There wasn't a Dec and Jan hasn't rolled out yet

There's also the indeterminate minutes, if/when something goes sideways...
This is being delayed for un-branded devices as well, such as mine purchased G-Store direct, based on some sort of carrier-block. I'm tempted to go dig through some dev-docs, to see if I can find this (could be an section not published for most, I suppose), but I figure to what end, mostly.
As you mention, easy side-load, but without knowing why this is being blocked for non-TMo (branded, so not gated by their release of their OTA) devices, it's a gamble of sorts...

I just posted in another thread that I think this is an odd situation. I use an MVNO Boost Mobile that uses T-Mobile and I got the update on the 5th. Maybe I got it before they pulled it? Why would they hold the update back to T-Mobile customers but not the MVNO?

OTA December Push?

Greetings!
I have (2) unlocked Pixel 2's (not rooted) and neither have seen the OTA update to 8.1. Am I the only one experiencing this or are others still waiting for the push? I'm fully capable of grabbing and installing the new images but wanted to see how Google handles these. It seems a bit weird that this has been released but not pushed.
Thoughts?
The pushing out is always done in phases, with just a few getting it in first few days then a larger-scale rollout after that. Some have received it without taking any action themselves, but I think the majority haven't yet.

Ok.... Thank you. This confirms it isn't that i need to be too concerned with. A phased approach is better in catching problems early on without impacting majority.
Yeah it will take some time to arrive (totally random). If you want to rush this you have two options:
Option a) Download the full OTA and upload it using ADB from the PC to the Android Recovery.
Option b) Now that there's an official OTA from 8.1 DP2 to 8.1 stable. You can try enrolling into the beta, after doing this, there's a chance you receive the OTA to 8.1 stable because Google roll outs the OTA to all the enrolled people when released. If you receive the OTA to 8.1 DP2 unenroll before applying the OTA and keep waiting.

Will it come to rooted phones? And will I lose root after applying the OTA?

I received my Pixel 2, two days ago and after going through the usual setup, I was offered 8.1 update(size a little over 1GB). Phone came with September patch out of the box. From my previous experience, it may take up to 2 weeks to get the update, but average about 5-7 days.

Thank you. I'm trying to be patient on this one. The only reason that I have questioned it is due to not being able to root my phone as is. I'm suspecting that with a fresh update to 8.1 the process steps will work correctly.
It's funny in that all i want to do is to block ads. LOL
That you again for your insites.
Weird. I own a Pixel 2 yet the December OTA offers an update for the Pixel 2 XL. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I avoid the update?
I got the update, something like ~600 MB. I haven't noticed any differences yet aside from the AR stickers in the camera, which are kind of fun.
I have a question in regards to getting the OTA updates.
I'm in Australia and got my pixel 2 xl on a plan with Telstra as they are the exclusive carrier here. But I use a Vodafone sim in the phone.
Will this cause me to not get the OTA updates?
Way too long time passed, and I'm still waiting. This is pretty annoying. Now I enrolled to beta to get it, but still nothing. -.-
Are OTA updates not possible for unlocked and rooted phones?
Everytime I try to install the OTA 8.1.0, my Pixel2 downloads the update and installation fails with the error message installation problems.
don't bother. 8.1 is trash. the battery has gone to complete crap on this phone now since 8.1

OTA's Verizon versions vs. Play Store Versions

Stupid question that I think I should probably know the answer to already but I do not believe I do.... Do the OTA software updates for the Verizon Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL's (phones bought from Verizon store) get the OTA updates at the same time that the Play Store ones do? Or is it much slower?
They are released at the same time. All are posted on https://developers.google.com/android/images usually the first Monday of each month and start rolling to phones the same day. With recent (last year or so) changes to the Check For Updates button, you should always be able to pull the latest available version after they are released. Full images tend to post before OTA images by a few hours, but usually by midday/evening you can get the OTA on device.
Google made it a point with the Pixel line that Verizon would not slow down the update process as other carriers have in the past (and still do).
Verizon will be releasing operating system and security updates for the Google Pixel at the same time as Google. The software still goes through the same Verizon testing process, [and Verizon] releases the updates in tandem.

Actually it is a few hours faster on VZ. VZ releases on Eastern time and Google on West coast time. I believe around 2PM.

First time setup question

So, I picked up a new unlocked 4a from BestBuy today. Before I set it up, I want to know if I should let the phone upgrade to Android 11 or try to keep it on 10? I know there have been some problems with 11. What's the opinion on this?

My opinion is to wait for the November or December update and then upgrade to Android 11.
I'm still on Android 10

No issues with A11; Oct update smoothed out a few rough edges that weren't that jagged to begin with. Every update brings drama from the fringes. Gotta decide what camp you fall into.
Are there any Android Auto issues with the current version of 11? I think there were some at one point. BTW, I'm upgrading from an OG Pixel XL which is still going strong.
Weird mine came with 11 out of the box.

You're in the UK? I think your release date was later than other countries so that's probably why.

I'm based in USA although an expat. I bought mine from Best Buy today.
Just my 2 cents. I just got my 4a yesterday and it came with 10, i updated to 11 during setup. I have ZERO issues. I was actually a little worried reading stories about issues, but i don't have a single issue.

Of course you didn't. For every negative report there are vastly larger numbers of perfectly happy users. Widespread issues draw a huge response over multiple boards that easily stand out from run-of-the-mill grumbling.

Plus if you DO have problems after "use 10 for a bit, install 11" then you'll probably end up factory resetting and doing all your reinstallation, config again.
(I recall from back when i could be bothered fiddling with cyanogenmod that nobody was interested in bug reports if you did a "dirty flash" - you had to do a factory reset first as it cured all sorts of problems. i wonder if google doesn't test stuff properly and you end up in the same situation and that's why factory resetting fixes so many problems).
The devices came with 10/11 based basically of release date in your state/region you live. I for example live in Italy and I bought mine from Google directly. It arrived 8 Oct with already 11 installed and with Oct security patch. No issue here with 11, as the major part of the other people. Let's say that's generally is expected to have some problems when there is a major release come out, as with any other software piece, not only android, but generally a couple of update fix all. And it seems so with Google security patch too.
I've decided to go ahead and update to 11. I assume that the pending update is for the Oct release,, but the notification doesn't show which release it is, only that it's for v11. I don't really want to factory reset before the update. Does anybody think it's a good idea to do a reset first?

On Android 11 because phone shipped with it .
Should be no need to reset first.
No touch screen issues with Spigen protector.
Android auto works fine with the assistant lagging from time to time. However that could have been due to poor service....

It's best to factory reset AFTER updating.
Also I'm fairly sure by now every region would have the October security update.
I did the update this afternoon. The update was for the September release, but then there was a 2nd update which brought it up to October. The phone seems to be running well after the updates. It seems a little zippier than before.

I just received the update as well. I'm installing now, going to re-root with magisk after update reboot.
I am currently looking at the a 21.40MB update called, rprs31.q1-56-9-7, that says 0 of 6, and supposedly includes Android security patches from August 1, 2021. I currently have it paused at 0% and is waiting for WiFi, despite having an unlimited data package, because I don't trust that it is what it claims. What network are you on? I am on Metro by TMobile. I googled the update version and first hit back was a verizon.com link, that apparently means this is their update, and if so, why the hell is it trying to force it's was onto my phone. (Backstory about my paranoia and anger, the past 6 weeks of my life have been nearly entirely consumed by phone crap, and 10 devices, including one Chromebook, and 9 phones, 3 of which I purchased brand new during this time, have all been infected with some sort of remote spyware hack, and I cannot get rid of the thing and have yet to be able to use any devices that doesn't quickly show signs it is also infected. It's a ****ing nightmare.) But yeah, I know my phone is hacked, and I have that on mine, and I am not a member of the provider that is claiming to be responsible for the update, so I'm disallowing it. If I were you I would freak the **** out right about now and see if you can remove it. Trust me that you don't want to end up where I'm at. Good luck.

Question Google delays all Pixel August Security updates

https://www.androidpolice.com/google-delays-august-pixel-patch/
This is really infuriating especially considering that Samsung is rolling out the August updates to their phones. I really wonder at times if the Pixel software team is a couple of folks kept in a back room. It really seems that as time goes on Google cares less and less about providing timely bug free updates to the Pixel line.
There were several times since the P6/P6 Pro release that Google delayed those updates, but it's very rare Google delays the entire line of updates. Definitely frustrating!
I wonder if the reports of p6a fingerprint sensor allowing for non registered fingers is the root cause to pull the updates so close to release.

No. If there was a specific issue with the P6a software update, they simply would have delayed that image from being released. They still would have released the update for the rest of the Pixel lineup. As I mentioned above, this has happened with many of the initial P6/P6 Pro updates where Google delayed those updates due to bugs, but released the rest of the Pixel updates on time.
EDIT - Perhaps you are speaking of the "missing" July update. I initially though you where speaking about the delayed Aug updates. However I don't think Google "pulled" a July update - I simply don't think it existed. Google isn't going to waste the time and resources in creating a monthly update for a phone that isn't released yet. I'm assuming Google was planning a regular Aug release which would include all the needed updates to the P6a which should have been released just days after the phone was released.

Updates are generally delayed because they found an issue that they didn't want to push to the general public.
Be patient. The update will come. Would you rather have a good patch that's a little late, or a broken update on time?
Of course, some people will complain either way...
