3 very important tips for developers - General Topics

If you are an app/ software developer, here are three very important UI related tips for you:
1. Design for least number of taps: Users should be able to access/ use a feature with the least number of taps. I often find that frequently used parts of an app require one or two additional taps because of where the feature has been located. This is inconvenient and avoidable.
2. One-handed use: UI should be such that the app should be usable with one hand. Make use of bottom bar instead of top bar.
3. Use Filters (including Search): Filters are the most efficient way of organizing and finding things, without having to move things around. Implement it wherever possible.

Spot on with the multiple taps and search.
I never get use to using a bottom nav bar though like in the Samsung browser.
Lol, I gave up one handed use when I got the N10+ I want that extra display real estate so it's a fair tradeoff for me. That long display means the top of the display is more easily in my view than the bottom.

When Google Search Bar was launched, all launchers would place them on top of the screen. Later, that was moved towards the bottom and I don't think anyone places the search bar on top any more. On my Homescreen with Nova Launcher, it is right below the dock, which is very convenient. It is only a matter of getting used to the new layout.
Bottom bar is even more required today because all phones now have large screen sizes. If top of the display is more easily in your view, then you would need the bottom bar even more because the address bar is not what you want to keep looking at. You want to see content more than the address bar. I keep the address bar at the bottom wherever the option is available (e.g. Vivaldi browser).
Even though OneUI and other ROMs have a nice one-handed mode, I don't use it that often. If apps can make features accessible with buttons placed at the bottom than at the top, they would make the usability even more convenient. That combined with swipe gestures would make for a perfect UI design.
Take a loot at this:

I'm inside a photo album. If I want to filter out just the videos, the menu is at the top:
If that menu (action bar) was at the bottom, it would be more convenient to perform the desired action.
This is just one example. There are several other uses I come across every day where a bottom bar would be much more convenient than a top bar, and as mentioned before, if swipe gestures are combined with the bottom bar (e.g. for switching tabs), the design would be perfect and much better than current implementation in most apps.

I definitely don't want a search bar on the bottom as I never use Google Assistant and peck everything out. Towards the bottom is out of my line of sight. I use Finder occasionally never the Google Search bar though. Just don't trust Google at all... they become less of an asset and more of a liability each year.
Control boxes towards the top right work well though.

The only advantage I see of having controls on the top of the phone is to force two handed use, which reduces the chances of dropping the phone and damaging it.
Otherwise, it is just a matter of adjusting your line of sight and getting used to it.

I almost always use 2 hands with the N10+ and I'm right handed. Lefties want the reverse side of where I want the controls.
Regardless the user should have full control of placement.
My current control layout. A whole different animal.
The green zone is the sweet spot and easiest to hit.
Red: DigiClock's hidden quad switch zones, 1&2 are used a lot.
Blue: One Handed Operation plus, zone A&B used the most. Controls I intentionally want to be harder to toggle are on the left.
Yellow: Clipboard Edge, somewhat out of the way to avoid false triggers, but still within easy reach.
The N10+ does have a one handed mode but I never use it. Flip tops were the last phones I used like that.

Navigation gestures take care of the problem of being right handed or left handed.
The Edge panel and One Hand Operation+ do make phone usage a lot more easier and quicker. Here's my setup:
But all these are OS related. App Developers would do well if they can implement the suggestions made to make the experience within the app better.

One Handed Operation plus is a great app with many options. You don't even want to know how many of the switch zones in it I'm using now
It lacks one critical thing, backup capabilities.
Apps should allow export/import backup files to card, hdd, etc. That makes a huge difference and adds value to the app. I will deliberately choose an app that has over one that doesn't especially complex ones. I love ColorNote as it automatically will backup to my SD card or cloud if you wish among other features.

I think many of the popular apps do have an option to backup and restore configurations. This is even more important for local apps that don't work off the cloud. I use Google Keep and Microsoft OneNote purely because they are cloud based, and allow me to access my notes on any device I want. This is also true of other types of apps. I have multiple devices running on different OS platforms, and so this becomes an essential criteria for me, as they make life much easier.

I agree these are important points. Another would be
4. Do not make settings activities with an endless list of checkboxes. This is tiring to look through and makes it hard to find the option you need. Instead, distribute the settings to dialog windows accessible from locations in the UI where they apply. Optimally such that the effect is immediately visible.
I think 1, 3, and 4 are implemented quite well in App Finder. 2 should not be important here since this is not an app one normally uses while doing other things.
Here for comparison a settings menu from Mixplorer (which is otherwise in many regard an excellent app of course):
The list is even longer.

That's true. A little bit of categorization or grouping can be helpful in such cases.

Is the concept of Android's navigation bar broken?

https://plus.google.com/+MarcKrenn/posts/eo6GWmCsrHk said:
(This is an open letter to the Android Design Team regarding the current state of the navigation bar. Long read ahead, you've been warned )
Dear Android Design Team,
I've always been a strong believer in Android's navigation concept and I'm confident it's a corner stone of Android's success. Sure, it might not be the most elegant or transparent solution ("What exactly will happen if I tap on the Back-button?"), but it just works perfectly 99% of the time and that's quite an achievement!
I personally see Android's Back- and Home-button as the ESC-button of the smartphone and tablet generation - even more than Apple's ever so awkward one-button-does-all-solution. Back and Home not only act as universal panic button and therefore reduces the user's fear of doing something wrong but they also make Android more consistent, easier to use across all the different apps (you don't have to search the app-dependent Back-button/solution - if there is one) and they reduces the user's cognitive load, freeing up their cognitive resources for more important tasks.
However, the way we access those wonderful functions - Back, Home and Recent Apps - is completely broken, for three main reasons:
1. Roughly speaking, it's always there when I don't need it, significantly reducing the active screen estate by 48dp, and when it's not there - for instance in fullscreen apps - I realize I'd need it. Yikes! Yes, it sounds paradoxical, but if you think about it, you come to the conclusion that the navigation bar probably doesn't belong on the screen.
Now, I know your reasoning behind the decision to scrap hardware navigation buttons altogether, but maybe the current visualization and placement of the navigation bar is just not optimal.
2. Talking about the placement of the navigation bar, it's probably the worst aspect about it's current implementation. Placing the bar on the bottom of the screen makes it nearly impossible to reach it without hassle - at least when navigating the phone with one hand, which should be considered the standard way of using a phone. At best, the over 90°-movement of your thumb looks and feels awkward, however for most people, especially younger and older ones, reaching the Back-button with their thumbs is just an impossible task. And the bad news don't stop here: The bigger the screen, the worse it gets, making 5"+ phone impossible to navigate with one hand, no matter how great your motor functions are.
I know, it isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the current implementation, but for the sake of ergonomics the current navigation bar should rather be located at the top of screen rather than at the bottom. And the order of the buttons should be altered: The Back-button, which is undeniable the most used one, should be the easiest to reach, so it should belong to the top right (for righties at least).
3. As mentioned above, the current Back-button doesn't provide any visual cues of what's going to happen next, when tapped. The user might ask himself:
"Will I go back within my current app, or will it send me back either to another app or my home screen?"
Since those cues are missing, people have to either remember their previous navigational history as a mental map (unnecessary cognitive load!) or they simply won't know what is going to happen if the tap the button, resulting in fear of doing something potentially wrong.
...
Here's my proposal
Okay, now let's stop criticizing the current implementation, since we all know it's easy to criticize but way harder to come up with better solutions. I tried my best though and came up with a different approach to navigating the Android OS. It's in a form of a video mockup and you can watch it enclosed to this post. Please read my annotations in this video.
I'm using this very kind of navigation - sans the visualization, of course - since I got my Nexus 4 over a year ago, using an app called GMD Gestures while hiding the navigation bar.
And well, it's a blast. It's way faster, ergonomic and simply better than any other current solution available right now - like, for instance the "pie navigation" implemented in some ROMs, which has some major interference with existing apps. I'd like to ask you to try it out yourself using GMD Gestures. After a day you won't go back to the standard navigation bar, I promise.
To wrap it up, here's a short list of pros and con of my proposal:
Pros:
+ coherently visualized, making it more graspable compared to other solutions
+ again, more ergonomic than the standard implementation
+ apps are always fullscreen and there's no need to swipe the navigation bar up when needed
+ 99% software based - only a tiny physical or visual cue must be added to the hardware itself to mark the start area of the gestures
+ conception-wise it integrates nicely into the idea of the beloved card-style apps like Google Now, G+,...
+ only very minor interference to current apps
+ adapts nicely to the various requirements of differently skilled users (see video annotations)
Con:
- small learning curve, like with all gestures, but you guys have never been too afraid of that, right?
...
It'd be really cool to hear back from you guys and pals just to let me know what you think. Thanks for reading and watching my stuff and I wish you
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
Marc

Picked that one up on G+ and I think he might be on something. You may check out the comments here.
Amazing concept!!! I would love to see this implemented in a rom. The only problem is the learning curve for regular users.
Great!
Just great!! :good:
Learning curve too steep. This is good for "power users" but not for everyone.

The Steam mobile app is definitely due an update, the last update was released in March 2012, but I don't see that changing for a long time.
The current interface for the Steam app is terrible, low quality images all over the show, it's a direct port from the iOS app, and that most certainly
does not follow the Android design guidelines. If Valve won't fix and update the app, who will?
I will.
This App is a modification to the official app from Valve on the Play Store. This mod completely changes the user interface from the ugly interface
that is currently in use, to a more pleasing interface known as "Holo". The visuals of this app follow the Android design guidelines as closely as it
possibly can without having to recode the entire app.
As well as this app being a visual update, the app also comes with speed increases, stability and general smoothness all the way throughout the app.
The standard app uses images for the text input box, send button and many more features of the app; using images for assets such as this contribute
to slowing down the speed of the app due to there being more files to read from. I have removed the need for many images in this app by moving the assets
from using images to using official Android code (Assets such as chat text input and the send button).
Every single visual asset of this app has been changed and rebuilt using the Android guidelines. The action bar is no longer an ugly bar with diagonal pin stripes
with a gradient overlay, it's now a single colour Android action bar. The chat bubbles are no longer obnoxious low quality bubbles, they're now high quality boxes
similar to that of the boxes used for Hangouts. All these visual changes and more in the app.
On the official app, scrolling through web pages (such as people's profiles) was painful, scrolling would take forever with a huge noticeable lag on every scroll,
making tasks such as viewing your games list unbearable.
To install this app, you must first of all uninstall the official app from the Play Store if you currently have that on your device.
Once the app is uninstalled, you can then install this version.

Looks great! Really needed this, I couldn't take much more of the default app's appearance.
If only Valve would do something about it sooner
Would it be possible to drag the side panel menu in from the side, and hide it away with another swipe? Similar to the new Play Store style?
Other than that amazing job!

How exactly do you modify an app like this? Is there a general overview/tutorial somewhere?
God I would love this done to the Rdio app.

There are various programmes which will decompile an app, once you've decompiled the app, you will be left with the apps source code.
Once you've got the source code, you can start modifying images, XML files and Java files. Once you've done, you can recompile it, usually using the same programme as the one you used to decompile, although the signature will be different

Oh my god oh my god oh my god THANK YOU! I have been waiting for such an update for aaaages. I've posted the link for a few of my Steam friends and they're testing it out - here's what we discovered.
I found a first bug and a thing or two which can be reverted:
- If you have pending messages, touching the number near the name doesn't open the chat. I need to touch the name, then touch chat.
- The message boxes used to be gray and blue, now everything is white. If you can add alternating colors, it'd be great!
Suggestions for expanding features (which may be impossible since decompiling doesn't give the original source, but asking can't hurt!)
- Do you think you can fix the notification system? Steam somehow doesn't push them like WhatsApp does.
- Steam group chats is something the app has lacked for forever!
- Ability to clear history of certain chats while leaving others untouched?

The bug with tapping the chat button not working is a long standing bug in the normal Steam app and is completely random whether it happens or not, I will continue to look into a fix for this.
Alternating colours were a thought while developing, however in the end it was decided to use completely white. The white is much more appealing than alternating colours, it also attempts to mimic the Hangouts chat boxes.
I assume you mean to have the notifications to include what the message is?
It would be incredibly hard to add this, but I may attempt this in the future.
This you already can, just enter a chat with a certain button, press on the overflow menu and press the button that drops down.
Is it possible for you to release the source code or is Steam's license prohibiting that? Just asking since my Steam account is too valuable to be put at risk. Now, I am not saying that OP is out here to steal peoples login info, but there's always a risk involved when you are logging in through a 3rd party app.
If only Valve would man up and update the damn app. It's been what, over 1½ years since they updated it, yes, it looks horrible, it's slow and barely usable.

The chat button not working problem just appeared for me for two people I usually speak with, didn't happen before, but I think that's a coincidence then.
If you could include the option for alternating colors, it'd be great. Google design choices aren't always perfect either and I like to see who's who at a glance.
With the notification, I mean that the notifications often don't get pushed but feel like they get fetched, since they often don't notify while the screen is off and when the screen is on it suddenly notifies again, having like a 20 minute delay. Though I think it's just Steam not using the Google Push Notifications, and this might be impossible for you to fix.
Attempting sounds great! Sadly I think you'd need cooperation from Steam somehow, I don't suppose there's a clear API and messing around in decompiled code isn't exactly very structured .
The clear history option was requested by a friend, they wanted to batch-remove some histories, though I can't really see the point of it. Might be that they have a lot of messages from lots of people.

Its very good, very smooth. You hace just cleared my homescreen of lots of apps. The only thing left in my homescreen are Dial an App, Browser, Google Maps and Iron Man 3.
Aesthetic wise, I feel like it needs more improvement, but hey, thats only graphical part. the core part is flawless.
Suggestion: Perhaps user will be able to 'dial up' settings? You know, like going directly to the WiFi settings, or directly to storage setting to eject USB on the go, or more importantly turning on the USB debugging inside the developer mode. I'm sure this will be a major request. Although you should also add a setting whether to enable dialing up shorcut settings or not, not all people want it.
Suggestion: I guess you need to add a setting page if you want to corporate more feature, as most people want to use certain feature and dont want to use certain feature.
Idea: There are some people that hide certain app and dont want people to see it, I guess it will be a bad situation if your app shows their hidden app.
Great app, will they be a paid version? Not a fan of the ads, would give a couple bucks to get rid of them!
Sent from my Nexus 7
Yes there will be an ad-free paid version as soon as I integrate contact search and a few other features in the upcoming version.
Keep the feed backs coming, helps me make this better and better.
What about apps with space in their name? The current version dont have any space input.
I suppose you wouldn't have to type the words after the space as , as soon as you are type the first word i.e the one before the space you will have that app in the grid already, for example: typing "Google" will give u "Google Play", " Google Music" , "Google Music" etc already on scren making it easier to choose, also you can easily type just the word after the space like "Music" that will give you "Google Music" too thereby saving an additional button press for "space"
correct me if I am wrong.
Interesting app. I have a couple of suggestions on how to improve it more:
The app shouldn't show up in recent apps, as people will probably access it through a shortcut and use it to launch other apps
It would be better user experience if the dialer was drawn over your current app, instead of using your wallpaper as a background -- this would give a more fluid app launching and changing experience instead of the current feeling of being taken away from your current activity
It would be nice to be able to change the app icon grid and icon sizes -- some people will want fewer but bigger icons, some people will prefer longer list with smaller icons
Since there's quite a lot of screen space for listing the apps, you could implement (an optional) row of recently launched/recently used apps. I think a lot of users are really just switching between 4-5 most common apps and this would make the interaction faster.
In addition, there could be an option to pin a favorite app(s)
Lastly, it's not at all obvious how one can change the keypad colors (long-press on clear seems to do it), and you are left wondering if there are other settings available as well (like changing the grid size)
Like I said, the app looks great and works well too.

I wasn't aware, I'll have to check, however Dial an App is soon going to be a complete Dialer and a part of my upcoming Homescreen launcher, you can give it a try and see for yourself all the features. Your feedback will be appreciated.
You know, I'm a right handed. My phone screen size is 4.7 inch diagonal. The situation now is that, after there's only one app left in the screen, its all the way at the top left, which is quite a stretch for my thumb. You might even have problem with this yourself. So I was thinking maybe after one app has left, the app will be highlighted (somehow) and brought to the center, that would be better I think. or maybe you can just touch anywhere on the screen and it will launch that app. Or just add another button that will launch that one app left standing.
You konw, this reminds me of Ubuntu OS, which is quite similar. Maybe you take insperation from these? My point is, after a few letter, the app that you want might be the first app in the list, so you can just tap a button and it will launch the first app in the selection. Of course for me, I feel it will be better if the app selection there will have some sort of popularity calculation to determine which one comes first, kind of like when you type iin the address bar in Firefox, most frequently visited site will appear first in the list.

Awesome app. Saves you some time.
Reserved. For future updates.
If you have like a hell lot of apps on your phone, this is the app the one you'd expect to save you some great amount of time. Would love to see further updates and appreciate your work. Subscribed.
Awesome app and a great idea! Can't wait for the paid version!
One small request - can you make a widget out of it? This would be an awesome full screen widget to replace my standard home screen (or maybe put it a page over from the home screen).
Contact Search would be awsome man!

[APP][4.4+] Galaxy EdgeBoard panel - device dashboard

A dashboard that displays current date, time, battery status and level, list of running apps (only rooted!) and list of favorite apps (customizable). It comes with 3 panels: one as described, one for running app list and one for favs. Almost everything is clickable including date, battery, time and icons of running/fav apps.
Originally made for Note Edge but works on other Samsung devices including Note8 and S9.
You need to enable the panel before it appears, see this tutorial.

Changelog:
Updated 10 May 2018 (v0.83):
bug: fixed crash on Android 8 when tapping tasks button
bug: set explicit light color for date/time (some devices would use black and black on black is hard to see)
Updated 2 May 2018 (v0.82):
bug: fixed possible crashes on Android 8
Updated 11 April 2018 (v0.8):
automatic refreshing of task list on the main panel when panel is being shown (can be disabled in prefs)
bug: fixed multiple issues with task list (not refreshing, missing apps when hide-favs pref if set)
minor: "tasks" buttons now call up Samsung's task switcher instead of task manager
minor: new icon
Updated 10 April 2018 (v0.75):
favorites can now be reordered by dragging
added Phone button to main panel (to make up for missing Phone app from favs), can be hidden in prefs
minor: added battery level text to landscape (some people requested it)
minor: added indication to tasks panel if task list is unreadable
minor: hiding Clock/Calendar/Phone apps from task list, if pref "hide favorites from running tasks" is set
Updated 8 April 2018 (v0.7):
Samsung Slook SDK was updated to 1.4.0 which hopefully fixes compatibility issues with recent phones
bug: fixed dispaying non-bitmap app icons (becoming more and more common) - e.g. IMDb
bug: tasks are now started wtih FLAG_ACTIVITY_REORDER_TO_FRONT | Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP flags; previously they didn't and this caused new instance to be started even for running tasks (sometimes causing data loss)
minor: tapping on current date now brings up Clock app (with Alarms, Timer, etc.) instead of date/time settings, unless the former is missing
minor: by default, hidetasks preference is false unless the app was made system
minor: added indication if EdgeBoard was made a system app
minor: added link to this XDA thread
Updated 13 May 2015 (v0.6):
fixed landscape not working for all 3 panels
added options to hide tasks or favs from the main panel to give more room to another list
increased spacing between items somewhat
fixed running task list being empty on the main panel
Task list: Android has removed access to running tasks for regular apps since Lollipop (5). However, if your device is rooted then you can make EdgeBoard a system app and this will remove this limitation. How to do that is described in the app's preferences screen. Unless you do that, refresh button won't work and task list will be always empty.
Feature suggestions:
- see why folders don't work
- show status icons like on the statusbar (signal, etc.)
- (automatically refresh task list) - done in 0.8
- (see why Dialer/Phone app isn't available in fav list) - Phone is actually part of Contacts, it's not a separate app with a separate launcher - added button in 0.75
- (drag-reorder favorite items) - done in 0.75
- (horizontal list scrolling in landscape) - wontfix - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76190042&postcount=32
Fantastic panel.

This is one of/the only big problem of this panel. I am yet to set up some service or alerter to automatically refresh it. As of now the panel doesn't refresh it at all but you can do that manually by expanding the task list of the panel (click on the "stack" icon above the list) and hitting on the refresh button there.
The panel was just approved on Samsung GALAXY Apps, I will keep it updated there so I recommend you reinstall it from the store and then update it from time to time waiting until I figure how to properly handle the running task list. Other than this the panel is finished.
OK, I noticed another thing, If I swap between two apps calling them from EdgeBoard Preferred panel, they swap slowly than using the normal preferred panel.
I hope I'm clear.
It's like every time I click on icon app on EdgeBoard panel, a new instance is created instead of calling that present in memory.
Nice. Very useful app.
Icons seem a bit close together vertically. Any way to get some more space between them, as I keep hitting the wrong one. Or alternatively make them a bit smaller?
On road map, any plans for folders or drag and drop to reorder icons?
Hey guys, just a quick note. I've got some valuable feedback about this (here and elsewhere), I'm aware of bugs around the task list in latest Galaxy Apps version and I'll be fixing them soon.
@arbit12 I'll add a setting to tweak the look of the main panel including the distance between the icons (I've crammed them together so 5 icons fit but that's probably not everyone's choice).

Download updated APK from the first post. Samsung Store is being slow so it'll be some time before they roll out the new version.
Great app. Ty for taking the time to do this i appreciate it very much
Re-arrange
Thanks for a great edge panel! Nice work! The only thing i miss is the possibility to re-arrange the icons/programs. I noticed that it might be a future function and I keep my fingers crossed that you have the energy to fix it. But again, thank you!

Great upp idea but the icons looks very small and when i touch one of them some time ti goes to another app
please in next update make icons a bigger in size and wider panel
edgeboard another major problem
The app can't pay pass the lock screen and open the app directly you have to unlock the screen manually each time.
can you plz fix it .
Is this still in development?
fundaprob,I wanted to know if you were ccontinuing development on this great project.
I would love to see the issues you outlined addressed and solved.
If you aren't planning on updating it, then is the source code anywhere if one might want to pick it up?
Sorry if these are obvious and dumb, but I really love this panel and I want to have a project to focus my attention on.
Thanks,
Zuffle

The panel width is fixed by Samsung, I can't change it. So I can't make icons bigger without cropping them (they're square). That's as much space as I could use.

This is impossible due to security. If you put file manager on the fav list and somebody gets your locked phone they can pretty much mess it up with that file manager without having to unlock. So Android won't let you do anything except using the camera in a limited way.

It's impossible due to limited screen space. There's the iconic indicator with ~25% step so you can generally get an idea of how drained your battery is.

Yes, yes and probably yes. I'm planning to finish the project by fixing those bugs soon. I'll probably put up the source code as well.
This was a draft project I did in maybe 2 days right after getting hold of my new Edge and I'm surprised nobody made a better version yet (or did someone?), it's simple and essential to Edge if you have a few days on your hands.
EdgeBoard is my new home screen
This app is nice! My home screen now has 3 icons. The ones I use all the time are on EdgeBoard. I'm running Marshmallow on the S6 edge+. The Apps Edge panel has two columns of full size icons. I don't mind the small icons on EdgeBoard. They look better. I have run into a minor issue:
When I edit the EdgeBoard panel settings, should I be able to add apps directly to it? Or can I only show apps on that panel by editing the Favorites panel and enabling "show favs on EdgeBoard"?
Changing the apps (favs) on the EdgeBoard panel is tricky. I have to enable the EdgeBoard Favorites panel, edit it, and then use it to make the changes show up. Then I can disable the Favorites panel and just use the EdgeBoard panel.

Glance Screen improvements, gesture and screen calibration in development?

In the settings there are some hidden activities of debugging, testing and experimental settings for the Glance Screen.
As you can see from the screenshots below, they would allow to change the backlight, the number of notifications to be displayed (four or six), the activation delay, the style of the screen, add new apps (still very few) to the usual three and have an extended view of events in program.

Actually, they appear to be only screens without management code, since nothing seems to work, except for the debugging settings in the fourth screen. Those actually affect the backlighting of the screen and the white tone of the characters (but could simply be related to the variation of backlighting).
As for the gesture, there are activities (not working) to activate the gesture on the fingerprint reader, to manage the virtual navigation bar (these should not affect the Nokia 8, since it has capacitive keys) and to switch from rear camera to front and viceversa with a double twist (in this case it's an empty activity with only the title, for this I don't put the screenshot):
They could simply be stock code residuals, but for the gestures on the fingerprint reader there is the animation of what appears to be a Nokia 7 (or one of the new Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco or 9), while for the gesture to emulate the navigation keys, I've never seen similar ones. From animations and descriptions it's clear that, when you hide the navigation bar, you can go back with a swipe upward in the bottom left; to home with a swipe upward in the bottom center and a swipe upward on bottom right for recent apps (iPhone X style ).
Finally this seems to be a screen to choose a different color profile, but it doesn't seem to work, so it may very well be a residual stock software not implemented:
I found these activities in the Android 8.1 beta for Nokia 8, I don't know if they are also present in the stable build of Android 8. It seems that something is actually in development, like the Glance, while the rest could be customizations for the chinese ROM of the Nokia 7, or maybe something in the making for new devices cooming soon.
If you want to browse or find other "news", it's all reachable by creating shortcuts to these activities using the appropriate Nova widget. You can find these among the System UI and Settings activities (.keyguard.glance.testing.GlanceSettingsActivityForTesting, .keyguard.glance.PrimaryNotificationIndicatorsSettings, .keyguard.glance.NotificationIndicatorsMainSettings, .keyguard.glance.GlanceStyleSettingsActivity, .Setting$DoubleTwistSuggestionActivity, .Settings$SwipeToNotificationSuggestionActivity, .Settings$SoftkeySettingsActivity, .Settings$NavigationBarSettingsActivity, .Settings$ScreenModeActivity) .
If you decide to take a look, pay attention to what you do, because starting certain activities could make the device unusable. For example, by starting the activity of FQC, a tool used to test and approve the units in production, it will be extremely difficult to exit, the shutdown and forced reboot of the device is also inhibited (hmd should remove it from the final software, but if I'm not mistaken, it was also present in the stable build of Android 8).
Do it at your own risk.
Even if it doesn't do anything yet it still gave me a bit of hope about the glance screen. Nice findings

So, if in Android 8 are absent most of those Activity, it means that something is actually in development, hopefully. We'll know more with the next beta, maybe coming with the february security patches in a few days.

It would be really nice if they add the following to the Glance Screen options:
1. Option to auto disable after 5 and 15 minutes
2. Option to change color of the text (red, green, grey, blue) at selectable start/stop date

Hope it's real , current glance not too useful

Hi, there are some updates about the improved Glance.
On the Nokia 8 Sirocco there is the new and improved Glance screen, I don't know why on our Nokia 8 there is still the old one and the new is present only as testing activities.
If you see this post on the italian Nokioteca community there are some screens of the settings of the new Glance, with the different styles and the always-on in the timing settings (but the Sirocco has an OLED display).
The owner of the Sirocco, un_padovano, also confirms that all apps are supported for notifications, not only the few of the old one or experimental version.
No way to see WhatsApp notification on glance screen , is real shi t
