Best Root + Magisk Compatible Phone for AT&T - General Questions and Answers

I have been searching all weekend, is there any recent (last year or two) flagship tier phone that is rootable and Magisk compatible phone that works with AT&T? I have been on the OnePlus 8 Pro for a while on T-Mobile and its been fantastic bug I am stuck moving over to AT&T and it seems like every phone is either unable to unlock bootloader or not fully compatible with AT&T.

AT&T or T-Mobile for unlocked S8+ ?

The backstory.... Preordered an ATT Note 7 and had many headaches with delivery / billing. I am now living with my old Note3 using Goggle Voice/Hangouts because of my weak signal (all carriers) at home. I'm using a pre-paid Straight Talk plan when away from home.
I've been waiting patiently for the S8+ and now need to decide between AT&T and T-Mobile for a GSM phone. I plan on paying full cash price and having it unlocked to use a 3rd part prepaid plan (Straight Talk or ?).
I considered a factory unlocked phone (Best Buy, May 9th??) but I am told that those will also have a locked bootloader. Up until the Note 7 I always ran rooted with custom ROMS. I became a big fan of Samsung Pay which I think also means a locked bootloader with no root is needed. Of coarse, bloatware sucks. I had good luck with Package Disabler Pro on my Note 7. I will be using my Google number, if only for forwarding to another number. WiFi calling is a must one way or another.
My Note 7 from ATT let me run Mobile Hotspot at the same time WiFi was enabled. This made it easy for giving my Android head unit in my car Internet access. The T-mobile version at the time needed to be turned on and off.
I'm leaning toward T-mobile only because of my bad blood with ATT. ATT coverage is marginally better in my area.

Either and flash the OS on it with ODIN. It is the same hardware so it doesnt matter.

Yes and also if the T-Mobile version is going to have an unlocked bootloader, flashing T-Mobile firmware should allow you to unlock it through the OS.
But it's highly unlikely it will have an unlocked bootloader, although T-Mobile have supported it, I don't think it's happening.

I get that if you buy a carrier phone and then unlock it. But what about the factory unlocked phones sold in the US?
I've heard that the bootloader on those phones is also locked, but not from a real good source of info. I've also heard international versions do not have a locked bootloader and do not support Samsung Pay. They also do not support CDMA (which doesn't bother me at all).

If I flash via ODIN does that kill Samsung Pay? What about Knox?

I'm in a similar situation and my first concern is what bands both phones support. Online it seems AT&T covers both GSM providers perfectly. The info on T-Mobile and its bands is extremely lacking. My second concern is the process of unlocking either fully paid off phone for use on the other. I think I can have TMobile unlock it for me but I'm not sure how it works with AT&T. The easiest solution is the unlocked version but thats not even got a release date set in writing anywhere.

As long you are flashing official firmware from Samsung nothing will break. Knox will not be tripped and Samsung Pay will work.

It is my understanding that all US (Snapdragon) phones cover all bands, including CDMA. That means you could even take an unlocked AT&T phone to Verizon. I'm not used to that! It even has LTE-U which TMo is supposed to be soon supporting.
I am an ex AT&T customer. They unlocked my Note 7, and again with the replacement, without issue. I seem to remember there was a wait period at first. 7 or 14 days?
The thing I'm considering is also the VR incentives for pre-ordering. I can tell you AT&T messed up my Note 7 pre-order. They shipped it on the release day by a slow method. I ended up going to a store and buying one outright and returning the unopened one once it arrived. That caused a billing nightmare that I had to call them every months until I finally turned it in and closed my account.

Can you recall where you read the carrier versions support all the bands just like the unlocked versions? All the info I found from the carriers shows different bands on each model.

You're missing what I'm saying... There will be no unlocked bootloaders on any Samsung S8 phones for the USA. You cannot get one from carrier or factory.
I think you may be mixing up Bootloader unlock and Sim unlock....

I do remember that it was a story about FCC approval of the factory unlocked (SIM) phone. Keep that in mind that it may be the unbranded, factory unlocked phone only, but the article did say they were all the same. The locked carrier phones may not be so flexible.
Other things I've found.. Best Buy SIM unlocked does not get the incentives. Best Buy, and their cheaper price, does not seem to offer a T-Mo phone.
The VR incentive is attractive to me, but is not a must have. At this moment, until I can find out for sure if Samsung Pay will work on an international version, I am leaning towards a T-Mo pre-order. But that is me and my preferences YMMV. I have a major dislike for AT&T.
Looking for where I read it. In the mean time this may be interesting to you.

It appears that going by this information the factory unlocked and the AT&T are NOT the same https://www.frequencycheck.com/compare-devices/6MQWs05y/samsung-sm-g950a-galaxy-s8-td-lte-samsung-dream/samsung-sm-g950f-galaxy-s8-td-lte-samsung-dream
You're correct that it seems T-mo info is evasive.
Hello,
I would like to know, if it posible to buy the Galaxy S8 from the samsung web page (att version), then unlock it and after that flash the unlocked rom flashing it with odin.
Can someone help me?
thanks.
Just ordered the 955F from Clove...
I'm hoping that missing bands won't hurt my AT&T usage much. Or any prepaid sims I may throw in there.
Will see if the 955U info comes out before my phone, and will decide if I want to cancel.

OnePlus 7 Pro T-Mobile vs. Unlocked

Hello! I'm shopping for a used OnePlus 7 Pro on swappa, and notice that the T-Mobile version tends to go for a bit cheaper. I have been out of the root and tinkering scene for a little while but I'm looking to get back into it with this phone. I found this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/how-to-convert-tmobile-op7-to-t3935947 and I just wanted to clarify that there are basically 0 differences between the T-Mobile and Unlocked versions after that work is done besides the lack of dual sim tray. If buying a T-Mobile version will impact my ability to root, update, or impact the performance of the phone at all it wouldn't be worth the savings over the unlocked version to me. The network I use is Mint mobile by the way, if that matters at all. Just wanted a clarification before I dropped the money, thanks!
I don't believe It matters since you're not on T-Mobiles network. They're one in the same.
Since you won't be on T-Mobile, you can flash the international version of os very easily and loose the tmo bloat apps. You just need to get the Sim unlocked to do so, then on international rom you can unlock the bootloader.

Should I keep my Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G?

Hey there Everyone!
For Christmas, I was gifted a OnePlus 7 Pro 5g(sprint variant). As I'm sure everyone knows, the bootloader is locked. and I was really hoping for a phone with Android 10. I've seen posts where some progress has been made on getting this device unlocked but nothing concrete yet.
My question is, Should I keep my OnePlus 7 pro and wait for an unlocked bootloader, or should I just return it?
Any input is welcomed!
Thanks

There is no guarantee you will be able to unlock the BL.
Also the phone is unique to Sprint (maybe EE in Europe has same phone) and that means the software/ROM is unique.
You will not be able to flash a generic international firmware version since the 5G is using the X50 modem.
If your desire is for a phone with an unlock able/unlocked BL on Sprint; good luck with that.
Not to be sarcastic, but Sprint is even more locked down that Verizon.

I'm actually on a VZW prepaid plan currently using a Chinese Mi Mix 3. My main hope would be to get it running Android 10. I could really care less about the 5g speeds as I don't really get access to it with my plan. My biggest issue with my Mi Mix 3 is that Development seems to be completely dead and I don't want to get stuck in the same scenario. But if there is hope for the OP7P5G, I dont mind hanging onto it until I can use it to its full potential.
Could be a fun ride for you... ?
i have gotten many phones on sprint unlocked such as pixels and they work. im getting a oneplus for free and have to use it for 50 days before they unlock it. don't know more than that but id trade for a pixel 3xl or something since i can confirm they can be unlocked and rooted. im using my pixel 3xl rooted on Verizon right now so i can confirm the sprint variant of that phone works.

OnePlus8 VZW Bootloader is Not Unlockable

Has anyone seen any difference in the bootloader, unlocking, rootability on the Verizon Version of the OnePlus 8. Anything in coding that speaks to a lock out from Big Red?
I heard about sign up and IMEI issues with the direct OnePlus buys although it seems the IMEI issue came across from the Verizon branded ones as well.
Thanks in advance for feedback!!!
Edit.... At this time OEM Unlock is Non-existent in the DEV Settings and Fastboot CMD does not Allow unlocking of the bootloader. Thanks All!!!

I hope that this thread gets some attention or there will be low sales for the Verizon version for root and custom ROM users.
Well if the 8 pro is anything like the 7 pro the bootloader unlock was really easy. There is a statement on DroidLife, com they are talking about unlocked OnePlus 8 phones and Verizon but it was yesterday and it might be fixed by now or real soon.
I have the T-Mobile oneplus 8 I could not network unlock my device not because I am on eip but because my phone is not showing up in their database... they questioned if I even got it through them, I gave them my order number and my IMEI and it was not coming up in their system

Same from the reports on VZW. Just wondering how that worked out with the device hardware modifications (assuming there actually are any. Think I may give it a whirl and return if its locked up.
I bought one from straight from oneplus themselves and even though I hadn't even inserted a SIM card yet, I couldn't unlock the bootloader (inserting one didn't change anything). I don't think this is specific to verizon, or perhaps somethings up. Anyone know what's going on? It's an IN21AA
Whatever... I'll bite the bullet. Just ordered one 5 minutes ago and I'll get it on the 6th. Let's see where we end up.
I won't be ordering one if the bootloader can not be unlocked any status updates would be great. The money off with a trade in for the Verizon one is hard to pass up then again the Oneplus Z is coming very soon and with a snapdragon 765G same chip the pixel 5 is rumored to have? move over pixel 4a screwed again.

I feel like this may be a bug or something else is up with certain models, Oneplus isn't exactly known for keeping everything locked after all.

For the unlocked models from oneplus I agree it's probably a bug. But the VZW branded 8 5G I don't think it is. Pixels even have a different bootloader than the unlocked ones and can't be unlocked if bought from Verizon. Maybe oneplus fought this but who knows Verizon has a lot of pull.

I know it's unlockable. But even people buying direct are having issues with the unlocked phones. If there is a way to unlock the bootloader like the VZW pixel keep the sim out turn it on use WiFi and maybe OEM unlocking isn't greyed out. But VZW will patch that real quick like they did with the pixels. I have a OnePlus 7 pro I have no problem waiting for the 8T or even the Z it's not much of an upgrade anyway the trade in deal was kinda hard to pass up when OnePlus trade in program doesn't give enough money at all. The VZW one was taking even pixel 2s which I have lying around so it was worth it.

Then I'd try a factory reset. There's no way the unlocked version won't let you unlock the bootloader. No chance. Mine was greyed out till I put a sim in and rebooted on my 8 Pro. and you can always return or exchange or get a refund ??
I read on DroidLife that the unlocked 8 and 8 pro are now certified on Verizon maybe people should work with the reps. to get the problem worked out. If the 8 pro is anything like the 7 pro it's going to be easy to unlock just use ADB.
So that's a definite? OnePlus 8 from red can not be bootloader unlocked? Even when paid off. Jus got mine 2day ago an that would blow

I'm not sure what phone you are using now. But I've had the 6, I've got the 7 pro now and both were easy to unlock using ADB and there were both on big red. But right now red had only the 8 pro 5G phone. I talked to a rep online she said was not sure when they were getting the 8 and 8 pro. I read that red was working on certifying unlocked 8 pro from oneplus but they also said it could be June. Let's hope it's sooner. Now I did have trouble with the 7 pro to get it to work on Verizon so I went to Verizon and they got it up and running. It was just a a couple of switches on there side.

Is the USA Edge Unlocked Root Able?

Someone on the Motorola Forums wants 2 know if the USA Edge Unlocked is Root Able?
Motorola usually allows the bootloader to be unlocked. If this stays true on the the Edge then yes it can be rooted.
I say yes on vanilla one
EU Edge can be unlocked without any issue. Not sure about US version though. Unlocking US Edge+ seems to destroy the fingerprint sensor.
Edge+ in the USA is Verizon only. Regular Edge in the USA is Unlocked. Verizon has a habit of keeping their phones Boot Loader Locked Out. Just FYI.
I have many US vanilla Moto phones (G5s, G6, G7, G Power, Z2 Play, Z3 Play, Z4, One Hyper) and ALL of them bootloader unlocked/rooted, so I am sure US vanilla Edge will be the same
I will receive the unit next week and I will tell
Okay, I received my Edge and the bootloader is unlockable thru Motorola's website (yay!) But there's a big warning that it voids the warranty (boo!) I guess I shouldn't have expected any different, but it's still annoying.

Hmm. Not eager to try it, especially since we don't have TWRP yet.
I just left a chat with motorola and thats a big NO for the USA (Verizon) version. It cannot be unlocked. This is sad news to me because i bought it specifically for that reason.
Seems you're right. No blue button
appears. Why would they do that to a " unlocked" phone with no carrier?
I'm gonna find, thru best buy , if they somehow, gave me a Verizon phone. Got it on launch day, it says it's a unlocked( no carrier) phone, in stats too, but I never get the blue button, to request a email for the unlock code. Others, in the US, have gotten theirs, and I'm not using any fancy protection, on any browser platform, on any device I'm using (PC, iPad, Windows), and no VPN. Chat's a joke, so any ideas?
Hating the way, moto does things. When I can, it's gone. Can't root it, US unlocked(?) version, no blue button, to ask to be unlocked, from moto site, no '11' update, $ badly spent.
