Verizon Moto G Unlock Bootloader / Root?

Does anyone know if the Verizon version of the Moto G can be easily unlocked and rooted like the GSM version? Knowing Verizon's track record with locked down devices I wouldn't be surprised if it can't be unlocked. I'm thinking about buying one as a wifi/media device for my car, but I'd also like to play around with dev on it so a non-unlockable bootloader would be a deal breaker.

Just to be clear, *all* Moto Gs (GSM) ship with locked bootloaders, even if you buy one that is factory SIM-unlocked, but Motorola offers a way to unlock the bootloader on the phone (for free) via their web site after you register it and request an unlock code. In the U.S., doing so voids your hardware warranty.
So the question isn't whether or not the Verizon model will have a locked bootloader or not. It surely will, as they all do. The question is whether Motorola's on-line bootloader unlocker will work with Verizon-branded CDMA model or not. And at this point, given that it hasn't been released yet and nobody has one, how is anybody supposed to answer that question?

It's actually available in some Best Buys right now and I think I've seen a few people say they've picked one up. I also updated the OP to use the right terminology though I'm sure everyone knew what I meant anyway.

I was able to purchase one last night at my local Best Buy after proving to them that they were in fact somewhere in the store, and waiting for them to call their Verizon rep, I just attempted the bootloader unlock on the Motorola Developer (official bootloader unlock) and I can confirm that it is not eligible for unlock at this time. Huge letdown for me as I was gonna get one for myself soon, but the wife won't really care about it being unlocked so for her it's still a good deal.

I purchased the moto G today and it says it is not eligible for bootloader unlock.
I was able to get past the activation screen and not activate it.
Every time I turn the phone on it does ask for activation. Wish I could get rid of this...

I was fat and happy to buy a pair of these when they became available in my area, but not being able to unlock the bootloader, and also not able to obtain the code from Circle-M, has forced us to begin looking at other devices, and forget the 'G'.
Too bad, I was really looking forward to expanding its horizons, but not if the game is to maintain a lock on my own device, no thank you!

I got the US CDMA version for BoostMobile & had it unlocked 'n rooted w/in minutes of unboxing yesterday.
You sure you're entering the serial # correctly?
(I didn't take out all of the spaces the first time and got denied, then fixed it & unlocked)

I thought BoostMobile runs on Sprint's network?

there is no boost version that I'm aware of..

I believe you can't flash a Boost CDMA phone and use it on Verizon (and vice versa): CDMA phones don't have SIM card to identify carriers; instead the carriers keep a database of admissable IMEI. Boost IMEI obviously not on Verizon's database, in which case you are stuck.

Can anyone with the Verizon version confirm that this works?

Just attempted to on a VZW MotoG with no success.

Well thats a bummer. I tried to unlock it but seem to have problems with the fastboot drivers on my pc. Ill mess with it a little bit later and post the results.

You have to activate it and get a phone number to get past that screen. You dont have to pay anything, just select "pay later" both time it asks you. It'll give you a number and then you can connect to wifi to do the rest of the steps.
Altering the setup app in any way thereafter reboots the phone, so you'll always have the activate app in your drawer. Thanks, Verizon.

Should I keep my Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G?

Hey there Everyone!
For Christmas, I was gifted a OnePlus 7 Pro 5g(sprint variant). As I'm sure everyone knows, the bootloader is locked. and I was really hoping for a phone with Android 10. I've seen posts where some progress has been made on getting this device unlocked but nothing concrete yet.
My question is, Should I keep my OnePlus 7 pro and wait for an unlocked bootloader, or should I just return it?
Any input is welcomed!

There is no guarantee you will be able to unlock the BL.
Also the phone is unique to Sprint (maybe EE in Europe has same phone) and that means the software/ROM is unique.
You will not be able to flash a generic international firmware version since the 5G is using the X50 modem.
If your desire is for a phone with an unlock able/unlocked BL on Sprint; good luck with that.
Not to be sarcastic, but Sprint is even more locked down that Verizon.

I'm actually on a VZW prepaid plan currently using a Chinese Mi Mix 3. My main hope would be to get it running Android 10. I could really care less about the 5g speeds as I don't really get access to it with my plan. My biggest issue with my Mi Mix 3 is that Development seems to be completely dead and I don't want to get stuck in the same scenario. But if there is hope for the OP7P5G, I dont mind hanging onto it until I can use it to its full potential.

i have gotten many phones on sprint unlocked such as pixels and they work. im getting a oneplus for free and have to use it for 50 days before they unlock it. don't know more than that but id trade for a pixel 3xl or something since i can confirm they can be unlocked and rooted. im using my pixel 3xl rooted on Verizon right now so i can confirm the sprint variant of that phone works.

Bootloader unlockable?

Anyone know if the bootloader will be unlockable on the pixel 4a?
I've been on a pixel 2 and didn't have any issues initially unlocking it. However, on every single RMA device I got (I went through multiple), I was unable to unlock any of them. And thus ended up staying with my semi-broken pixel 2.
From what I could recall, the typical pattern is the Verizon versions can't be unlocked, but other versions were fine. Is this still usually the case?

I haven't bought a new phone in a while and was wondering what the development scene is like for the Pixel phones. I really want to get rid of all Google features except the camera. AOSP or Lineage. Is that possible if the bootloader is unlocked?

The Google software is what makes the pictures great, not the camera. That said the pics are hard to beat.

If you buy the Unlocked or Fi model they are bootloader unlockable and always will be. If you buy a Verizon model they are locked with only a random chance they could someday possibly be bootloader unlocked.
All the models should be sim unlocked.

We likely won't know 100% until actual release but if gsmarena is to be believed, yes it'll work fine. These are the bands it supports according to gsmarena.
2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

Yes you can use a rom that allows signature spoofing or you can modify whatever rom you'd like to allow sig spoofing and use Fdroid instead of Google play store as your app store. @penguinyaro Verizon has a long history of encrypting boatloaders on their devices they sell.. I think they were the one's to really kick off the whole encrypt the boatloader deal then many others followed suite and now you must really ask a lot of questions when you buy a device because if not regardless of what device it is or who makes it you could end up with an encrypted boatloader. I was going to purchase a Pixel 2 xl years ago and nobody on eBay could tell me whether or not they were sim unlocked Verizon pixel 2/2XL or Google purchased devices. Also I read soooooooo many reports from people saying they sent their pixel 2/2XL in to Google to get fixed and Google ended up giving them a replacement and the boatloader was encrypted on the replacement. Reading all that I just didn't even follow through with getting a Pixel 2 XL at that time. There are many reports on Google's site and all over about that. But as far as I know the 4a does not have an encrypted boatloader unless you get one from Verizon then I'm quite sure it would be locked down. That's why I like buying devices off swappa.com so much because most everyone there knows about what they have and can confirm before you purchase.
The road is getting narrower every year for us! Pretty much everything bought from a store like Verizon, At&t...Most phones in stores have encrypted bootloader nowadays unless you run across a Motorola or buy an unlocked international model. For me its either OnePlus or Pixel from Google.

I went through a number of rma phones as well. This was more than enough to make me doubt Google.

Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty? this will be my first Pixel phone.
I remember during the Nexus days I could ul the bl without fear of voiding the warranty, except for the Galaxy Nexus from VZW where they would piss and moan about you unlocking the bootloader, but of course I did it anyway and still was able to get a replacement when I was screwing around and hard bricked it... Oops
Now it seems that even the manufacturers who allow bl unlock, Motorola among others, will void the warranty if you unlock their phones.

I recently sent my Pixel 4xl in for RMA. They replaced the logic board and sent it back. It was a Verizon edition. Before putting my Verizon sim back in I unlocked the bootloader. Always a chance something nice can happen.

Just received my P4a (Google Version) and unlocked the BL without issue. Used the standard ADB unlock methods. The OEM Unlocking was grayed out, until connected to the mother-ship via WiFi.

Now we just need the system images to get the boot.img for rooting.

Is there a way to extract the boot.img from the phone? or do we have to wait to get it from google?

From what I under stand you cant,,,so we will prob have to wait for the Sept factory images maybe.

Same. No issue with unlocking the bootloader. Now I'm on hold until I can get rooted and bring apps and data over with Titanium Backup.

↑ Same here. Giving Google the benefit of the doubt that since today (Aug 20) was the "official" release date, we should see them online tomorrow AM as their server updates. Otherwise, something is wrong, as they should be posting the original image all the phones already shipped with, not just the next update.

Oh I sure hope so. Not having a firewall and AdAway is driving me nuts. It's why I root, plus the convenience of using Ti Backup to save settings.

General PSA: There is No OEM Unlock on US Galaxy A53's

Whether you get a carrier version or the factory unlocked U1 model, OEM unlock does not exist on this phone. So those in the US that were thinking of doing custom roms with this cheap new Android device, look elsewhere.

Samsung has blocked their bootloaders on U.S. phone variants for years now. The only way to unlock is with paid service unfortunately.

But I guess it's temporarily closed until the person in charge returns. Usually it's not worth it for lower end phones since the unlock process can end up costing just as much as the phone tbh.

on some devices it takes 7 days for the oem unlock to show in developer options, have you tried the time and date hack to see if it shows

This does not work on U.S. variants

SamPWNd is dead. Samsung patched it with firmware updates in 2021 (it is in the warnings not to install unpatched firware updates). The website is down. Unless they can find a new exploit in the new firmware, it is not possible.
Samsung has blocked BL unlock for a while. They seem to have shifted their target audience to a different group in recent years. If you really want BL unlock you should pick Pixel.

it doesnt make sense from a business perspective, a regular audience doesnt even know about unlocking a bootloader, so they will be buying the phone regardless if samsungs advertising impress more than the competition, but for us lets say "power users" we know our warranty is void when we oem unlock, and buy making it easier to do it (oem unlock), they are more likely to shift more handsets to our side of the market, not only that but there is more chance of us breaking our devices which in turn gives them more income when we seek samsung official repairs or splash out on a new replacement, i really dont see the logic behind not allowing oem unlock unless its to test the abilities of the likes of chainfire in regards to exposing vulnerabilities

I had assumed getting a non-carrier one would be open but I haven't been able to get OEM Unlock to appear either : /. I even went with the A53 instead of A52 because I thought there was a better chance of having unlock on Exynos than Snapdragon. It's not too late to return but I'm still holding out hope someone can come up with something. I like Samsung hardware (for the most part) but without root... meh.
Willing to try ODINing tars and stuff if anyone has any ideas.

Exploits could take years to even begin to surface. S8 and S9 come to mind, but their root is so limited with locked bootloaders that it's almost not worth the hassle. I would return it to be honest or try and get an international variant imported. I've traveled to the U.S. with a Mexico variant phone and I got signal just fine, but I don't know how the internet speed compares if you use a U.S. SIM.

I switched over from Pixel line just for a Samsung specific feature and a quick google had me certain I would be able to unlock the bootloader and root it. It sucks that its not the case, but I blame awful tech journalism. So many articles that claim their method will work for ALL devices in a family, or even ALL ANDROID devices period.

Getting an international version isn't worth doing IMO because the 5G bands don't overlap the same way 4G does. I looked in to getting an international model but decided against it as it doesn't support one of the three 5G frequencies used in my town. I figure there's 0 chance of new frequencies being added to the hardware, but always a chance of finding a security flaw to unlock the bootloader.

there are still U.S. Bootloader unlock services, but as of right now the A53 is not supported.
and only certain versions of bootloaders are supported.

No it cannot be rooted. The bootloader needs to be unlocked, and that is not possible to do either.

i dont understand on how come samsung always do this with new S series until next model comes out and a dev comes in understands that all the lights are shyning on the phone so it should be way esier to get around the OEM toogle missing from developers tab....i would be happy runninh simple but effects very strong to just be able to control whats running and wahts not,use shizuku for highger APis previleges,ice box is great to frezze in case you cant remove via ADB ,Nevo great as well,greniffy,etc....but come one someone find the solution to root the american vertion variant and ill pay whoever can do this favor,on any network in the US im on t-mobile....but willing to witch if is t-mobile the problem ill switch, its unlocked

Why not switch to a pixel then? The issue isn't you or your phone the issue is Samsung deciding that what you paid for the phone wasn't enough to allow you to do what you want to a device you supposedly own.. The response you received here is disappointing. I dont own this phone but I was thinking about it until finding this out.

So you can buy a Pixel in the US on any carrier with an unlockable bootloader?
I live in the UK and don't buy new phones very often and have a Samsung S4 mini, S7 and S9 which I still use.
The S4 mini came with an unlocked bootloader out of the box, so no toggle needed in dev options. The S7 and S9 have the toggle.
Regarding the S4 mini, I read a post from 2019 that stated Verizon and AT&T were the only US carriers that locked the bootloader, so I don't know what is going on

Well I've seen some threads about this, but mine is a snapdragon so far i have been searching and hoping that with the s23 series maybe someone would have a answer for the issue

Not true. The non-US Snap Dragon variants are rootable. Qualcomm had nothing to do with the bootloader being locked down. That was because North American (primarily US) carriers required it.

Samsung's US and Canadian Snapdragon phones do not allow unlocks regardless if the phone was bought from a carrier or not.

I honestly didn't realize that was even a thing. No surprise. We don't own our devices Any more. The 1000+ dollars you pay for a phone is just to use it. I've been using an iphone as my primary device since early 2018 which is how I didn't realize this bootloader f#ckery.

Ummm... Go ahead and take off that tinfoil hat and read the 4th, 5th, and 14th Amendments. You should also cut back on the Dan Brown books.
