Why some android devices thinks that file with APK extension is a directory and others don't? - General Questions and Answers

I have a private APK file hosted on some webserver, but that webserver downloads this as a zip file (it has to do sth with headers). I can just rename the file to use .apk extension and can install it with my Xiaomi, but the same method won't work with device like Lenovo Tab M10 HD (both phones running Android 10).
I have tried two file managers, one is top-downloaded and second one is a Total Commander
I am confused, looking for some ideas

Try extracting the zip, does it have the apk inside the zip?

No. I will check if I can modify return headers of web servers so it won't think its a zip, but damn right APK
Maybe there is some filesystem indexing issue

Using Total Commander, pack the apk file with the password (in TC check the Encrypted box) and upload it to the server.

Those aren't for android though
I'm afraid that I don't think there is one. You're probably stuck using a computer.
Or you could try to get unrar (linux command line) running on your phone and then do this from the command line
Code:
unrar e -p{password} file.rar
Let me know if you get unrar compiled on your phone

Updates by me.
quick search in market, gave me Unrar from Twanky Deuce Software
I use AndroZip for zips and rars, works well
Unrar is closed source, can't get it compiled for ARM.
Unrar and Androzip don't support passworded files.

You have to extract the Opera9 file and copy directly to Windows.
It is all.
Best Regards,
Hi, what you have said is a bit vague. the extrated file from the download is an exe file so dnt i need to run it once i copy it over? and what windows directory? do you mean the windows folder on the device memory? not the opera9 folder in the windows directory?
so your asking i copy the exe file into the windows folder on the device memory and just run the exe? is that what i do?
please explain properly (full file path and instructions)
Thank you very much

Yes you have to copy Opera9 file to the Windows device memory, then you will be asked to overwrite, so you should tam yes.
Afterthat you can normally run Opera web browser but in new version.

Faster optimization, screen rotation? Pleaze post !
I copied the file overiding the original and when I try to start opera, it says "Opera Loader" with a red cross which when pressed it exits...
Any thoughts?

I deleted the existing Opera.exe file from the Windows folder and copied this one, but the app won't start. I think it has something to do with the attributes of the new exe file. The ROM attribute is ghosted. Any ideas?
Thanks
Procedure is clear to me. Just overwrite .exe file with new .exe file
But to spare me hazzle and spending one day to revert: does this change my opera-settings which I tweaked in operaconfig or goof them by incompatibility ?
Does this new build support flash better than the old one ?
What EXACTLY can the new build better than the old one ?

I have similar questions,my opera is skinned and as troed mentioned
several operaconfig tweaks including having moved the Cache.
Anyone know whether these will all need re-doing if we upgrade
to newer version ?
In short is it worth the effort just to have a different version number ?
Anybody notice that with this version Manila internet ta bookmark thumbnail don't work with manila 2016?
I and others using the whole package. I have not tried only the .exe

Hey Bobsbbq, do you mean the thumbnail not populating a page image? If so, yes I have. The only way I've found to get the image to show up is to open each favorite site in IE.

[Q] Is there and app that can launch an apk from within a RAR archive?

Hi im looking for a file manager that can launch an .apk file that I have compressed into a .rar archive.
Astro Manager can do this for zip files but rar is a much better archive and has higher compression.
Does anybody know of one that is compatible with rar and can launch it "directly" from the archive, and not just extract it somewhere and you have to then manually launch it.
I don't know any file manager with RAR support built-in.
But there are 2 apps for RAR archives in the Market: Unrar and Unrar Pro.
So at least you can unrar the archive and then install the APK with a file manager (Astro, ES File Manager, ...).
Edit: well I missed the last part of your message : "not just extract it somewhere and you have to then manually launch it". Sorry...
Yeah bud, You see that's the prob, the only ones ive found are ones that have to extract somewhere and then you manually launch it.
What im looking for is same functionality as zip has with Astro where yu can launch the apk directly from inside a zip file. It will extract it first in background and then automatically launch for you so the extracted file stays in cache or some temporary folder.
Hopefully winrar will release an official app at some point or somebody releases a solution
Maybe ask to the team of one of the existing file managers if they can add support for RAR, instead of having yet another file manager, only for RAR.
I have done.
I was simply asking if there was currently one available in the mean time.
Hopefully ASTRO will integrate rar support, its by far the best file manager ive used.
Then you have not tried ES File Manager

Yes I have.
It doesnt do what im asking.
[edit] Infact ive just tried it again and it doesnt even support rar archives at all, it cant extract or load from them.
What im looking for is a program that can launch a spk fiel from within an archive. There are many managers that can extract files from them but what im looking for is something that extracts in background to temp files and launches the file directly via the archive when viewing, Just like Astro does with zip files but for rar.

Yes, its happened on past phones also..... Find a different file.
Try astro file manager and under its settings select allow unknown browser downloads or something similar.
Yeah, that happened to me too... you have to use a different web browser other than the default one

[Q] Can't open / download attached zip file in Gmail

I received an email yesterday with a Zip file attached, the GMail client wouldn't let me download & stated that there was no viewer to View it.
I have File Expert installed which will open & decompress zip files (over and above any native OS support for zips) but this is not offered as a choice.
I would have thought that there should be an option to download the file even if there is no way of opening it, is there a configuration somewhere ?
Kind of essential, I get a lot of zipped files in emails.

Search the market for "Download All Files" from HwkRbbt Software. It works great and allows saving of EVERYTHING.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.
try androzip from the market, unzips anything, and is a brilliant file manager as well
I am having trouble with this as well. My zip files show up in GMail with a 'INFO' box that when I tap onto it prompts me with a window saying that there is no application found to view it.
I have tried a few file managers already, including ASTRO (Which I own) plus the suggestions above. I take this for granted on my Droid X already...Any ideas?
I've had the same issue on both my phones and my tablet. No file manager or download manager has ever helped, including down droid, download all files, and ASTRO file manager, any other ideas? Thanks, sharf
